South Belfast : People in Profile
Personal Trainer and Nutritionist, Laura McClune, tells us
“WHY I LOVE... south BELFAST” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? Anyone who knows me, knows I’ve had several different jobs and this could be an extremely long answer. I’ve tried a lot of different career options from working in a solicitors office to cabin crew with Emirates and travelling the world, working as a holiday pep in Greece and as a recruitment consultant. But for the past five years I have been working as a Personal Trainer and Nutritionist, and I think I’ve finally found my niche.
HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK? A typical day for me starts at 4.30am when I’m up and eating breakfast getting ready to be in the gym for 5.30am. I usually have between 4-6 clients, then I train myself for about 60-90 minutes, then head home for lunch and a nap before returning to work around 4 or 5pm for my evening sessions.
HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME? I love to train! It is my biggest passion and I love nothing more than to put earphones in, listen to some good music and to lose myself in my own little world while I lift weights or hit the cardio machines hard.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT WORKING and living IN south BELFAST? South Belfast is a very friendly and quiet part of Belfast. There is never any major disruption which makes it feels safe. I also love the proximity to the city centre.
Healthy eating: Laura says Slims Kitchen has a great selection of healthy and tasty food.
WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO SOCIALISE IN south BELFAST? WHY? I love the Lisburn Road. It has a really nice feel to it and it’s nice to dress up and head out to a fancy restaurant. One of my favourites being either; Slims Kitchen for some healthy nosh or Dean and Decanos for something a little more up- market and sophisticated.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HIDDEN GEM IN south BELFAST? WHY? French Village in Botanic would be massively close to my heart as my good friend Amy French owns it along with her triplet brother Ashley. Every time I visit the bistro I always receive amazing food, a great service and love the whole atmosphere of its quaint little character.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT/CAFE IN south BELFAST? WHY?
Sophisticated: Laura loves Deane and Decano, Lisburn Road.
16 South Belfast Life
Again, It would either be Slims Kitchen on Lisburn Road or French Village Bistro. As I’m a Fitness competitor and usually watch what I eat. I would tend to eat in Slims Kitchen as it has a great selection and tasty food, but if I am looking to indulge then French Village it is for one of their yummy caramel Éclairs!
LEARN GROW & THRIVE AT THE YMCA The new YMCA Nursery in Stranmillis has won praise for the striking modern design and child friendly features since it opened this summer. Hundreds of visitors have come to see the best in good design for children and many have stayed to become part of the YMCA family. The colourful screen provides both child security and a visual sign that you have arrived at the YMCA. “Michael Whitley Architects would like to thank Belfast YMCA for believing in the Architect and allowing us to provide a building that fulfils the needs and aspirations of the children and YMCA. When the client has confidence in the Architects design, the building will not only be a great place to be in but also inspiring and uplifting the excited play of the children confirm its success.” Children love the new play spaces both indoor and outdoor with the outdoor covered play area well used this summer. The new children’s furniture is beautifully finished wood rather than plastic and every window is a child height window to play beside or just to look out over Lagan Meadows. Children are supported in developing play skills and staff are trained in monitoring their key development stages. Children love to play at their new YMCA.
Call Valerie on 9068 4668 or Email: Valerie@belfast-ymca.org to arrange a visit or reserve a place for your child.

South Belfast : HISTORY
Newtownbreda A History ‘Newtownbreda’ follows on from the publication of 11 local history books by Aidan Campbell covering areas of Belfast Like previous titles the Newtownbreda story is an illustrated and spoken history which includes lots of old photographs and reminiscences about life in the area over the past century. The book takes the form of a journey which starts at Rosetta and continues along the Ormeau Road and Saintfield Road and finishes at Carryduff. There are old photographs of places, people and events and on the way there are detours to Knockbreda Road, Church Road, Galwally, Belvoir, The Inns, Purdysburn and Newtownbreda Village.
A sand-bagged military post (below inset), with flags flying, occupies the Rosetta junction during the ‘Troubles’ of 1922 and a couple of billet tents are also in view. However, it seems to be business-as-usual at the tollhouse with a couple of carters paying their dues. The Belfast Street Directories for the 1890s mention the presence here of a Public Weighbridge and Weigh Master. a familiar sight Close to the junction of the Ormeau and Ravenhill Roads is the familiar sight of a row of early nineteenth century cottages known as ‘Saddlers’ Row’ (below main). Farmers coming into Belfast markets would leave bits of harness to be repaired at the cottages, collecting them on the way home. Resident at the row in the 1930s was Lizzie Moodie, a ‘character’, whose spring cleaning

brought the entire contents of her house, chamber pot included, onto the street. She kept a bucket of water behind her front door to empty over anyone who, innocently, offended her by waiting at the tram stop nearby. The stop had to be moved. Mistakenly believed to be without relatives, she was buried at the expense of the local Catholic parish, it was later revealed that Lizzie had been a Baptist. A very Northern Ireland story!

Aidan Campbell has previously published 11 local history books. Profits are donated to various local charities. He regularly gives illustrated An account from 1744 declared ‘Belvoir, an agreeable seat of Hon. Arthur Hill stands about two miles south of Belfast pleasantly seated on the River Lagan’. The creation of Belvoir Park (which originally extended to over 600 acres) dates back to the early 1700s when Arthur Hill (later 1st Viscount Dungannon) bought the townlands of Ballylenaghan, Breda and Galwally. Belvoir Park Golf Club extends to 130 acres and was founded in 1929 and the Belvoir Park housing estate was built during the 1960s. left: This chemist shop was opened in 1955 by Victor Corrie. It was the first to be opened in the area and had the address of 77 Saintfield Road, The Inns. The shop unit has since been demolished. The staff of The Inns Pharmacy in the early 1980s included Linda Carson who is wearing a sash when she was the winner in a Northern Ireland-wide competition, run by the National Pharmaceutical Union, for ‘Pharmaceutical Assistant of the Year’ and she had to travel to London to take part in the national final. Fellow staff members are pharmacist, Eileen Hamilton (left) and Olive Finlay.
purdysburn The Belfast Book 1929 records: ‘The Purdysburn Estate is situated five miles to the south of Belfast in a fold of the Castlereagh Hills. The principal portion of the property was acquired by Belfast Corporation in 1895 … from the representatives of the late Narcissus Batt D.L. Additional land for Mental Hospital purposes has since been acquired and the entire Estate now comprises 500 acres.’ The old Purdysburn ‘Mansion
House’ (pictured right) dates to c.1825 and was demolished in 1965. The name of Purdysburn apparently derives from a John Purdis who had a connection with owners, the Batt family, and the Burn is a small river at the southern boundary of the estate which is a tributary of the Lagan. The Purdysburn Hospital site was laid out on the ‘Villa Colony System’ and the name has changed over the years from the original ‘Belfast Lunatic Asylum’ to the current ‘Knockbracken Healthcare Park.’

RBAI Represents the UK in Europe Following the success of the RBAI European Youth Parliament (EYP) team at the Northern Ireland Session in March, the team progressed to the EYPUK National Session and competed with teams from across the United Kingdom. After four days of team building in which the boys got to know the members of their committees; committee work in which the resolutions on complex European issues were created; and the all-important General Assembly in which the proposed resolutions were debated, the RBAI team emerged victorious. As a result, in March 2016 they will represent the United Kingdom in the 81st International Session of the European Youth Parliament with 34 other European countries. This is a tremendous success for the society and is the first time that the Society has won a UK-wide competition. We wish the team, along with joint winners from St.Coleman’s Royal Belfast College, the Academical Institution best of luck College Square East, Belfast, BT1 6DL and continued Tel: 028 9024 0461 success in the www.rbai.org.uk International Session.

Health Screening Analysis Available at Framar Health What is the Asyra pro? The Asyra Pro machine is a Bio-feedback testing system that measures the body’s response to energy frequencies. The machine provides a completely noninvasive method of analysis, no blood or scratch tests are involved. What can it test for? The Asyra Pro machine helps to identify various weaknesses and system imbalances. Your test may highlight nutritional deficiencies, digestive imbalances, allergies, food sensitivities and hormonal imbalances. What do the results tell me? The results give you a clear snapshot of how your body is functioning at the time of the test, indicating areas of weakness and stress that may be contributing to existing health concerns. These results can be used by the practitioner to identify
patterns or trends that will help formulate an individualised therapeutic approach. Who can be tested? The test is suitable for adults and children over the age of 3 years. However it is not suitable for those with pace makers over 10 years old. How long does the test take? The Asyra pro test appointment is for one hour and during that hour you will have immediate access to your test results in addition to consultation and advice from the practitioner. Follow up appointments are available and last for ½ hour. Does the test diagnose? The Asyra pro is not a diagnostic device and does not look for any particular diseased state or condition. Always consult with your GP if you have any health concerns.

Want a younger fresher look? … Perhaps SKIN REJUVENATION is the answer…
Who is it for? This treatment is ideal for clients who find that they have skin discolouration, sun damage, age spots, mottled pigmentation, dull complexions, diffused redness or high colour and the symptoms of rosacea and enlarged pores.
The most commonly treated area is the face; however Skin Rejuvenation is also successfully carried out on the chest, shoulders, arms and hands. These areas are regularly exposed to the sun through day to day activities, hence damage may occur.
Photo Rejuvenation
How does the treatment feel? You will experience a snapping warm sensation during the treatment, but once the treatment is completed the sensation stops.
One of the major advantages of the Skin Rejuvenation treatment is that you get great results with no down time or long recovery times.
What happens next? A mild erythema/redness in common immediately after the treatment and quickly subsides.
How does it work? The Skin Rejuvenation treatment stimulates the collagen production in the dermis, which in turn produces an anti-aging effect on the treated area. Clients will notice their skin looks smoother, younger and fresher. Fine lines will appear reduced, what’s more is that your make-up will go on much more evenly.
When treating areas of pigmentation it is normal for you to experience darkening of pigment in the treated area in the next few days following the treatment.

you avoid using sun beds and sun bathing for the next 30 days. Results can be noticed after just one treatment; however, for optimum results clients should have three treatments at four week intervals.
Is there any special after care? Apart from wearing a SPF of at least 30 there is no after care treatment. We do however recommend that

South Belfast : HISTORY
BY ANY OTHER NAME After the success of ‘Stormbird’, a sell-out cinematic theatre tribute to Ireland’s widelyacclaimed poet, Pádraic Fiacc, author Patrick McGarry delves into the life of this all too often over-looked south Belfast resident.
His re-entry into the city had in the end its ups and downs. Many can still testify to his existence in Belfast’s Bohemia, around Stranmillis, where during those years he was a familiar figure. But before that came marriage; an American wife, Nancy, a child, Brigid, a home in Glengormley and recognition of his poetic power with the highly prestigious George Russell (AE) Award in 1957 - a true high point. His home at Farmley Crescent became a magnet, full of intimate soirees. By ‘69 and the start of the real upheaval he had been using his own clear nightsight to chronicle it for us in all its awfulness - in poems that now must bear quite close re-reading. In 1982 he was elected to Aosdána, Ireland’s Academie Francaise. It is with words that Fiacc’s whole life has been connected to and concerned with - his often bleak response to the world he inherited. Over the years, he has used his poetic flair to write some amazingly tender verses. ‘Storm Bird’ is a favourite of many and “an echo chamber of words and thoughts, bringing us into Fiacc’s most private inner reality that of the artist’s driving force . . .”
My comings and / goings / Are the comings and / Goings / Of
wind / I am the word the wind / Mutters / Pay me no mind /
Though I serve beauty / And not mankind
Great poets leave us great lines. Profound reflections on life and living that transcend translation - and explanation. The purpose of language is still to convey and not to conceal. Shakespeare, Pope (‘what oft was thought but ne’er so well expressed’) - the people adore them because they leave us lines to love and to use; long after they’ve gone. That is the mark of greatness. They mean something to us. And what more memorable image leaps from Fiacc’s lines than the one that never leaves me since I first set eyes on it - from his poem ‘More Terrorists’ which stunningly begins... ‘Pádriac Fiacc’ by Neil Shawcross (2014) By kind permission of the artist and Multimedia Heritage.

I wish I’d written that. Like Myles na gCopaleen and many another literary figure before him, Pádraic Fiacc, has three titles; Patrick Joseph O’Connor, his birth name; Pádraic Fiacc, his pen name; and Joe, the name by which he is familiarly known to his close friends, family and acquaintances. Fiacc’s city is Belfast; he was born and half-reared in it. Pádraic first saw the light of day in Elizabeth Street, off the Grosvenor Road, in 1924. His mother then moved to The Market area of Belfast in 1927, after his father’s exile to New York and a new life. In 1929, mother, Pádraic and his two young brothers relocated once more. From East Street the family headed west, to the United States. But the New World could not keep him nor satisfy his soul and so following schools and seminaries on the East Coast it was back home, on his own, across the Atlantic to Belfast, just after the war, in 1946.

Fiacc has left us an authentic body of work that will long outlast him. This can fully be realised and appreciated in the recent reissue of Ruined Pages, Selected Poems, which was published by Patrick Ramsey at Lagan Press and edited by Gerald Dawe and Aodán Mac Poílin. My Twentieth Century Night-Life - A Pádraic Fiacc Miscellany, also published by Patrick Ramsey provides valuable material to place Fiacc’s achievement in a fuller social, political and literary context. Gathering together original critical pieces, autobiographical writings (including his two much-admired radio memoirs, Hell’s Kitchen and Atlantic Crossing and “Many More Bright Aprils - Pádraic Fiacc at 70” - an elegiac testimony from fellow poet, Brendan Hamill) as well as a generous selection of critical - and artistic - responses to his work, this miscellany is a significant addition to our understanding of the most complex and urgent of Northern Irish poets.
South Belfast : HISTORY
With the release of Sea, a collection of poems spanning his career, in 2006, Fiacc “confirmed his durability as a person and as a writer”. The illustrations by Michael McKernon, which accompanying the poems, for me, at least, eased my way through them into his poetry. They make his works more accessible and this is crucial to staying with his verse and seeing what he has to say. Fiacc is seen by many as The Poet of the Troubles. Of course, he is that, but he is also his own man too. There is more than The Troubles to his body of work, which spans over seventy years. Fiacc’s poems are full of history and hurt and a lot of what was, sadly for him, not to be. His early years as a youth and young man, his callow manhood back in dull, post-war Belfast, his marital mayhem and family disintegration all permeate, as later would the dark tumbril decades of civil slaughter. ‘Birds and bricks’ also featured prominently in Sea. Michael’s detailed and coloured aviary of drawings, and his capturing of that divine autumn sunlight on Belfast brick, brings images before us that also ease our entry into what he describes as ‘Fiacc’s multi-layered passages’. It is no wonder the imagery of being on the wing gel with him; his very pen name Fiacc, the Irish word for a raven, links both states eloquently and darkly. The fabled brick wall too is here in force and being up against it was often Fiacc’s lot. And like many of the citizenry in their time and not just metaphorically, but physically, politically, militarily, personally, socially and territorially too. And then surprisingly at times a lovely lightness of touch infuses his writing, as in ‘Two Solitudes’...
You are baking bread / I am making a poem.
You are baking bread until it sings / I am baking clay until it glazes.
Now in his ninety-second year, Pádraic’s extensive body of work is not only celebrated by his peers but it continues to inspire the generations that have come after him. Pádraic is highly acclaimed in both Derek Mahon’s ‘Glengormley’ and Conleth Ellis’s tribute to him, ‘Remembering’, whilst younger protégés, like Francis O’Hare, the Belfast-based Newry poet and teacher, truly capture the character of Pádraic in their own writing. Francis’ poem ‘Gypsy Horses’ speaks to the free, wild spirit that was and is Pádraic Fiacc - ruminating as he does, on the unbridgeable chasm between the city down below and the born free ponies, romping and roaming at will, above. Nearly 80 years of writing poetry has seen him recognised by Civic society in recent years, most notably with two City Hall tributes in 2010 and 2014
- commemorating his life in poetry and his 90th birthday. A wonderful night was also held last year, dedicated to him courtesy of Multimedia Heritage in First Presbyterian Church, Rosemary Street, Belfast, to also celebrate his 90th. A packed house heard Professor Gerald Dawe, Professor of English at Trinity College Dublin and Director, there, of The Oscar Wilde Centre for Irish Writing give the impressive Keynote Lecture on Pádraic’s work. “He places Fiacc”, says Michael McKernon “in the very front rank of the greatest Irish poets of the last millennium. His preface to Sea - Sixty years of Poetry, published by MMH in 2006, is distilled from thirty-five years knowledge of Fiacc and his work”. That night saw too A First Performance of Five Settings of Pádraic’s poems set to music by composer Liam Friel ably assisted by Marion Jordan, Mezzo Soprano, David McCann, Cello and Nigel McClintock, Piano. Such acclamation came to a climax recently in Belfast’s new MAC Theatre. Producer Michael McKernon, with the support of Multimedia Heritage and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, revealed, to a sell-out crowd, a cinematic theatre production of Stormbird: The Life of Pádraic Fiacc in his own words, poems and images - his tribute to Pádraic’s work, his life and his times, to a visibly appreciative audience from far and near - Germany and the United States to name but a few. After such an illustrious career, it really is time to look again at the work and times of the poet who breathes the soul of Belfast; his city. Perhaps it is no coincidence too that all those dark titles of his past collections (all but one produced during The Troubles) are being succeeded by regenerative new images and titles for our time. A time to leave the bleak black past behind, to find new ways to say things to each other; new ways to weave words. To see blue skies above the storm-tossed seas.

Mike Morfett MRCVS MA VetMB Veterinary Surgeon from Flynnvets at Balmoral and Commons Brae is back to answer your questions about problem pet issues.
Unfortunately, many of the problems that we have to deal with in exotic animals arise as the result of incorrect care and husbandry. There are many factors to consider when looking after these pets in the home, including environmental temperature, humidity, dietary needs, vitamin supplementation, UV light, worming regime and so on. Sometimes it is hard to find the correct advice, especially online where websites can be contradictory and unreliable. If you have an exotic pet (even if it appears healthy!) we would strongly advise consulting Mike for professional advice and tips on healthcare. For example, the most common problem in guinea pigs is tooth disease which can be prevented with the correct food. Similarly, the most common problem in Bearded Dragon lizards is calcium deficiency, which again can be
Not all of the patients at Flynn Vets are furry dogs and cats - some of them hop, slither, crawl, fly or even swim their way into the practice! Mike, one of the vets (pictured), has special interest and knowledge in exotic animals, and is always keen to see pet reptiles, birds and small furries. Recent cases have varied from rabbits with teeth problems, tortoises with shell injuries, parrots with feather disease, and 6 foot long lizards needing tumours removed. Every case is very different, with each species requiring unique medication and treatment, and this certainly keeps both Mike and the team on their toes!
prevented with use of special supplements and correct lighting. If you would like to get in touch, simply ring your nearest branch and ask for an appointment. And what are Mike’s favourite patients? He really enjoys dealing with pet rats - they are extremely intelligent and friendly, and make extremely rewarding companions. We would recommend them as a great choice of small furry pet, as long as you are not too freaked out by their tails!

Looking Back ‘Newtownbreda’, by local historian Aidan Campbell, was published recently at Hillmount Garden Centre, Gilnahirk. It follows on from the publication of 11 local history books covering areas of East Belfast and on this occasion is about an area of South Belfast. Like previous titles the Newtownbreda story is an illustrated and spoken history which includes lots of old photographs and reminiscences about life in the area over the past century. The launch event was well attended and book sales raised over £1,000 for local charity.

SOUTH BELFAST : Review
Exclusive Dining I have always been curious to know what lies behind the sophisticated black and gold doors of Alibi, on Bradbury Place. Checking out their website, I surprisingly found out that Alibi wasn’t just one of the hottest nightclubs in Belfast, but there was also a bar where, judging by the pictures, gorgeous food and cocktails are served. A new menu has just been launched so my colleague and I decided to treat ourselves on a Thursday evening after a busy day at the office.
introduced us to the new menu. From soup to crispy seafood, sirloin steak or thai spiced fishcake, there was definitely something to satisfy all taste buds. Everything looked so delicious and I was so open-mouthed looking around that it was hard to make a decision. Finally, I asked for the pulled pork bruschetta bites with a jim beam apple chutney as a starter, while my partner opted for the jim beam honey chilly chicken, with Asian salad and pineapple salsa.
When we arrived, two smart doormen welcomed us before we came across some black curtains which led us to the main bar area. We sat down in one of the velvet sofas, analysing the exquisite décor. The library at the bar, the TV screening an old classic film, the fireplace, the dim lights and the candles sitting on the tables immediately made us feel comfortable and relaxed, as if we were at home cosying up on a cold winter night.
The pulled pork arrived served on some crunchy and tasty toasts, placed on a wooden table with a magnificent presentation. As I saw my companion enjoying her dish so much, I took a small sample and loved the combination of sweet and spice melting in my mouth.
The lovely waitress approached and kindly
The tempting cocktails menu sitting on our table encouraged us to order a couple of strawberry daiquiris, perfectly made and a must-have if you, like me, are a cocktail fan.

When it came to order the main dish, I was tempted by the Thai green chicken curry, while my partner went for the warm caesar salad. We are both enthusiastic foodies, and we couldn’t stop commenting on how excellent our food was. Then the live music started, creating a unique atmosphere. The acoustic sets take place every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9.30pm so make sure you don’t miss them! The band was so good that we both agreed to stay for a while after finishing our dinner. We couldn´t leave without checking out the desserts menu. Although the selection was really tantalizing, including chocolate brownie sundae with honeycomb ice cream and pistachios, fresh lemon tart and raspberry ruffle cheesecake, we were too full to continue.

South Belfast : People in Profile
Andrew Brown, Barista at the new Oliver’s Coffee Bar in South Belfast, tells us...
“WHY I LOVE... lisburn road” WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE? I have had a variety of jobs throughout my teenage years. I tended to not stick at them for long, I would always get bored and move onto something else. But, when I started working in Clements Coffee Shop on Botanic Avenue in 2007 that changed. I think that it was because for the fist time I genuinely enjoyed the work I was doing. I loved making coffee, loved working with a lovely team of people, loved meeting and talking to new customers everyday. The fact that you were constantly busy and facing new challenges throughout the day without a chance to get bored was great. I wasn’t saving lives or anything, but I was helping people through their mornings and days in general, and that felt good. I spent nearly a third of my life to date working for Clements and did not think that I would leave, but then I came across a place that changed my mind.
TELL US ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE WORKING NOW The first time I went to Oliver’s on Belmont Road I was blown away. It is the first coffee shop that I had been to in Belfast that felt truly contemporary, aside from ‘Established’ in the Cathedral Quarter. It seemed like it was on a par with the kind of place you would find in London or any major city in Europe. Oliver’s just seemed to have everything right. They bake virtually all of their traybakes, scones etc
on the premises several times a day. The shop had genuine bakers making things from scratch on site, they could be seen working away through the kitchen door. Having worked in a coffee shop for eight years I am a self confessed coffee snob, but I couldn’t even fault the coffee, it was delicious. When you work in the service industry you kind of get a feel for a place when you are in it, you can sense how the staff are finding their work and almost imagine what it is like to work there. It sounds cheesy, but I knew I wanted to work in the place before I had finished my breakfast. Fortunately for me I have been getting my hair cut in Peter Oliver’s, Lisburn A chance conversation at Peter Road, for about five years and Oliver’s lead to Andrew getting once I started talking to my his dream job. friend Diane, who works there, about how much I loved the place, she informed me that they were currently hiring new staff and she put me in touch with Peter himself and I was lucky enough that he took me on.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT working on the lisburn road? I have worked on Lisburn Road for the past five years and have lived on it for the majority of that time. The thing I like most about it, is the people. I don’t think that I have met a greater concentration of genuinely nice people anywhere else in Belfast. Many of which I have met in the lovely Cranmore Park whilst walking my dog, which is where I spend the majority of my spare time, as I am super boring and a total dog nut. The road is also home to my favourite Thai restaurant in Belfast, ThaiTanic. Or Chalcos, which is a totally underrated alternative to Boojum. I love my food and there is an absolute plethora of great places to choose from within walking distance of each other.
‘Lovely’: Andrew spends a lot of his spare time walking his dog in Cranmore Park.

SOUTH BELFAST LIFE’S JOANNE HARKNESS VISITS AMBROSIA ON THE ORMEAU ROAD
MEALS THAT ARE MAGNIFICO On a lovely autumnal night after work, my friend and I went along to enjoy an Italian meal at Ambrosia on the Ormeau Road. As soon as you step in the door the lovely aroma of the delicious food being cooked draws you in and it made me eager to have a look at what was on offer on the menu. The menu did not dissappoint, it had a wide range of authentic dishes on offer and as Italian food is my favourite cuisine I knew I was in for a treat. To begin you could tantilise your taste buds with ‘Nibbles’ which included garlic bread, olives, dough sticks and Italian cured meats. There was a great variety of starters available including; steamed mussels, king prawns, squid and Italian meat balls. I opted for the bruschetta while my friend chose the soup of the day. The starters were quick to arrive and the colours of the fresh ingredients made it look so vibrant and appetising. The bruschetta was exploding with flavour, with the sweet, juicy tomatoes, the crisp ciabatta and the hints of garlic and basil all coming together perfectly. My friend is some what of a soup connoisseur as it is always top of her list when ordering a starter. She said the tomato and roast pepper soup was delicious with an extra added zing and she noted that it was the perfect choice to warm her up on a chilly autumn evening. Choosing the main was quite a dilemma as everything looked so appealing, from pasta to pizza, to steaks and salads, I wanted to order them all. I was drawn to the pan fried chicken breast with pomodoro sauce, mozzarella cheese and pangritata and I did not regret my decision as it was so tasty, I enjoyed every bite. The chicken was tender and the mozzarella was creamy, not to mention the sweet, flavoursome sauce. My friend ordered the ‘Vesuvio’ pizza, topped with pepperoni, fresh chillies, onions, jalapenos and mozzarella. Pizza is my favourite food, I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner so when my friend offered me a slice I couldn’t say no! The pizza was hot and spicy and was so good that it could rival any top pizza chain. We also ordered garlic fries on the side to share, they were so moreish, with just thr right amount of garlic. 60

Dining in Ambrosia was ‘magnifico’ from beginning to end. The staff were very attentive and welcoming, the service was quick and the food was terrific! During my visit I noticed that there was a range of people dining in the restaurant; families, friends and couples, so it is a venue to suit everyone. Not to forget it is B.Y.O so you can enjoy a refreshing alcoholic beverage with your meal. The food is fresh and authentic and it transports you to a traditonal Italian restaurant right in the heart of bustling south Belfast. CULINARY GEM Have you been to the Kitch? Located on Dublin Road, this family-run restaurant, which opened its doors last Christmas, should be included on your list of ‘Belfast’s restaurants not to be missed’. Not only because of the excellent food that is cooked and served by such a professional team, but also the superb atmosphere, with a trendy décor that will make your dining experience unforgettable.
From tempting small plates that reminded me of Spanish tapas, to sliders that consisted of mini burgers in buns with fries and dips, as well as grilled dishes, flatbreads, pasta and risotto, to name just a few. It was difficult to decide where to start, but then we spotted the Strangford Lough mussels and, as seafood lovers, we couldn’t resist not to try those local delicacies.
I first experienced this culinary gem on a Friday night when my friend and I were walking down the Dublin Road in search of an eatery that could offer something a little different.
While we were waiting, we treated ourselves to some gorgeous G&T’s and took the opportunity to examine every little detail. With contemporary paintings hanging from the walls and available to purchase, cosy sofas and high red stools, the Kitch turns into the chic restaurant on the Dublin Road.
Once inside, we were welcomed by one of the waiters, who informed us that a new menu had just been launched. I have to admit that I’m a bit of a fussy eater, but I was surprised by the wide range of dishes to choose from. There is definitely something for everyone.
The mussels, perfectly cooked with white wine, garlic cream and chives, were absolutely delicious. When we finished, we were lucky to

meet the owner, James, who friendly shared with us his enthusiasm and passion for food, explaining that all dishes were created using the best ingredients, sourced from local farmers and independent retailers. When it came to order the main course, I was tempted by the slow cooked brisket of beef, while my comrade picked the sea bass fillets, with creamy mash, chorizo, portavogie prawns, garlic and chive butter. The presentation of both dishes was unbeatable and so tasty that we both agreed that we would come back without a doubt. The Kitch ethos is to think of everyone and that is why they have menus dedicated to satisfy those who are vegetarian, in a hurry for lunch or off to the movies. The pre-cinema menu includes three mouth-watering starters and two mains for only £20 and cocktails are just £3.50! Opened seven days a week, this eatery is well worth a visit if you are looking for high-quality food, a unique venue and dedicated staff that will make sure that you leave looking forward to your return visit. They are now taking Christmas bookings so why not have a look at their ‘Kitchmas’ menu and wish them happy 1st anniversary?first b

Lowe Memorial Annual Open Day
It was another fabulous afternoon out for the whole family as Lowe Memorial, Finaghy, hosted its annual community open day for the tenth year running. The church car park was transformed into a vibrant funfair which included a, bouncy castle, children’s train and an inflatable version of the popular TV game ‘Last Man Standing’. On the front lawn the younger children enjoyed pony and trap rides, courtesy of Phil’s Farm, and had the opportunity to get ‘up close and personal’ with Levi the Llama, Fifi the micro pig and Roger the giant rabbit. Despite the glorious sunshine outside, the crowd was nevertheless drawn indoors where some of Lowe’s many organisations took the opportunity to showcase the activities they have to offer the community throughout the year. Nail painting, face painting, table tennis and performances by Buddy the Clown meant that there was as much to enjoy inside as out. A great time was had by all so be sure not to miss it next year!

35 Years of pantomimes & he’s finally written one! The Lambeg Players are set to take to the stage once again, this time they will be performing a script penned by one of their own. BT9 man Ian Bennington has been a member of Lambeg Players for longer than he cares to remember and after more than 30 pantomimes and as many plays, he this year decided to write his own script of “Jack and the Beanstalk” specifically tailored to fit the particular talents of the Lambeg Players troupe of battle worn adults and bright eyed children! Lambeg Players was formed in 1956 and since that time has done a Pantomime and a play every year. This vibrant dramatic society has become renowned for its hilarious Sam Cree Ulster comedies as well as some gems such as J B Priestley’s “When We are Married” (pictured below right). The club also has a long-standing reputation for inventive and spectacular pantomimes which are a fabulous and cost-effective treat for families. The pantomime is performed in Lisburn’s excellent Lagan Valley Island Hall theatre, has a live band and is jam packed with fun and frolics which are enjoyed year in year out by children and adults alike. In recent years the club has raised close to £100,000 pounds for a host of charities including Meningitis Research, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Northern Ireland Hospice and Clic Sargent. Following its enduring support for Oasis Village Trust in Zambia this charity has named a school after Lambeg Players. So if you want a fantastic post-Christmas experience to get you in the groove for 2016, book fast as the show always sells out. 70 South Belfast Life

luxury on wheels Derek Black checks out the latest BMW 7-series The sixth generation of BMW’s 7-series flagship saloon carries on the tradition of combining comfort and capacity with driver appeal. Luxury on wheels it may be, but there are important changes to meet the challenges of today in terms of economy and emissions. There was a time when an executive express was all about performance. Now we are talking about a modern limousine that is enjoyable to drive, or be driven in. Yes it is an indulgent car but it also takes its responsibilities seriously. BMW has learned much from developing its i3 and i8 electric cars and this has been applied to the new 7-series. A ‘carbon core’ of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic means the new car is stronger and up to 130kg lighter than its predecessor. As a result, the latest ‘straight six’ petrol and diesel engines return commendable figures on the combined cycle. Take the 265bhp 730d for example. This model accelerates to 62mph in 6.1 seconds yet returns over 60mpg on the Combined Cycle with emissions of 124g/km. Even the more powerful 326bhp 740i petrol car can manage 41mpg Combined and emissions rated at 159g/km in its long-wheelbase L form. Yet this is the largest car BMW has produced and comes, as before, in standard and L versions. Styling is elegant and refined with a long bonnet and sloping roof line. The interior is nothing short of beautiful with leather upholstery, a big 12-inch infotainment screen and lovely detail to the instruments and minor controls. If you don’t run to a chauffeur, driving the 7-series can be as involving or relaxed as you choose. The eight-speed Steptronic

sport transmission can move swiftly and smoothly between the gears or you can take over and dictate the gear changes by flicking the paddles on the steering wheel. Springing and the cars reactivity can be controlled by dialling up sport or eco drive. Or, for the first time, there is an Adaptive mode that reacts to your driving style and which can also factor in the road ahead through the Professional Navigation system. Ride quality on the latest Sevens has been notably improved. Connected Drive is the latest in navigation and driver information. It flags up your speed and the current speed limit on the head-up display on the windscreen. The new 7-series is the first cars that can be manoeuvred into and out of parking spaces or tight garages with the driver standing outside the car! The Driving Assistant safety package includes light city braking, lane departure warning, with speed limit and no-overtaking warning. The adaptive cruise control is extended to adapt the car’s speed to the detected speed limit. At night there are LED headlamps with a system that includes pedestrian and animal warnings. The new 7-series comes with the traditional BMW rear-wheel drive or the x-drive option which powers all four wheels as needed. Prices range from £64,530 for the 730d to £76,010 for the longwheelbase 740Ld with xDrive. Plug-in 740e and 740Le hybrid versions are to follow rated at up to 134mpg on the Combined Cycle.

Queen’s University unveiled its electric DeLorean, on the exact date that Marty McFly went Back To The Future in the iconic Belfast-built car – 21 October 2015. Doc Brown famously modified the DeLorean as a time machine in the Back to the Future movies, the second of which saw Marty McFly travel to 21 October 2015 to prevent his future son being sent to prison. Students and staff from Queen’s School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, supported by NIE Networks, have painstakingly restored and modified the DeLorean DMC-12 over the last eighteen months, before it was revealed at the Ulster Museum. Dr David Laverty, who leads the project said: “This project was about modifying a car into an electric vehicle, but we wanted to do it in style. The DeLorean was the obvious choice because of its strong connection to Belfast and its starring role in the Back to The Future movies. As Doc Brown said, ‘if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything’. We are very proud of what our students have accomplished during this project. Queen’s Electric DeLorean has equipped them with the skills, knowledge and experience for a career in electrical engineering.” Photos by Paul McErlane. South Belfast : People in Profile
The show must go on! We chat to award winning playwright Marie Jones OBE about family life, work and her new play at the Lyric Theatre. Tell us a bit about ‘Christmas Eve Can Kill You’ your new play at the Lyric? ‘Christmas Eve Can Kill You’ started out as a small show for Christmas in 1989. It was just a one hour show put on in the Old Museum (now the Mac). It was such a great success. We brought it back the following year as a full length show and performed it in the Old Arts Theatre. The following year we put it on in the Lyric and again the following year. It’s about a taxi driver on Christmas Eve and all the people he encounters on that mad night....all walks of life are there, all with different expectations of what Christmas means to them. Mackers the driver tries to remain an impartial on-looker but reluctantly keeps getting drawn into people’s lives. Each year we changed a few of the passengers but always brought back Mackers and the people’s favourite, Mr. Dunne. Mr. Dunne spends the whole evening trying to get past the bars to get home with the turkey. Him and his turkey are a bit the worst for wear by the time he reaches Finaghy. In the build up to putting on the show, what does a typical day at work involve for you? In the build up to show there is not much for me to do. The play has been written, the hard work is up to the actors. I turn up to rehearsals and laugh louder than anybody else....almost like I am seeing it for the first time. It does help that we have a brilliant cast. Tell us about your career to date? I have had a long career going back to 1983 when I first co-wrote with Martin Lynch and the Charabanc theatre company. That company brought the story of Belfast Mill Workers (Lay Up Your Ends) to many far flung places including the Soviet Union. I have written many plays since that and these have been performed all over the world, including the West End and Broadway. I have been awarded an OBE and two honorary Doctorates..I’m very lucky that it doesn’t feel like real work. How do you like to relax in your spare time? With my family, my sons my grandkids...we love football and rugby and that becomes a family gathering on many occasions.
What are your interests outside of the theatre and writing? Outside of the theatre I don’t think I have any other interests...it takes up most of my life. I love it. My husband and son are actors so you can imagine the constant discussions and debates in our house....I take the grandchildren to whatever is suitable and they now have a love for it...that and supporting NI football team...that’s a family passion.
Marie Jones with her husband, Game of Thrones star, Ian McElhinney
I know you are an east Belfast girl, but do you have any favourite spots (restaurants/cafes/bars) in the south of the city? Well I just love going of a Sunday to All Seasons on Botanic. We go a lot with the family and the food is great, and Richard the owner is a real gentleman. Finally, what are your plans for work in the future? I have a lot of work on now....a few commissions. I have one for the Old Vic in London which is very exciting. Also I am working with two New York Producers on the revival of ‘Stones In His Pockets’ for the West End and Broadway.

of the best PARKS In each issue we take a look at five of our favourite things in south Belfast - this time its the great outdoors.
Sir T homas and Lady Dixon Park Where is it? 237 Upper Malone Road, BT17 9LA Why we love it? This beautiful park comprises rolling meadows, woodland, riverside fields and formal gardens. The City of Belfast International Rose Garden has made the park world famous, and contains over 20,000 blooms in the summer, divided into trial and display beds, an historical section, and a heritage garden that displays the best of the roses from local breeders. Each season thousands of visitors enjoy the rose gardens and associated events during Rose Week. When can I visit? From 7.30am. Closing time changes seasonally. Where can I find out more? www.belfastcity.gov.uk/leisure/ parks
Belvoir Park Forest Where is it? Belvoir Drive, BT8
Why we love it? Managed by the Forest Service, Belvoir Park Forest is unique in the UK as it is a working forest within a city. Walks within the forest link to the Lagan River ‘Towpath’ and the Lagan Valley Regional Park. The RSPB has its Headquarters in Belvoir Forest Park, and the surrounding forest is full of bird life and other wildlife including the red squirrel, one of the few places they can be seen relatively easily. When can I visit? Open 24 hours Sunday to Saturday. Where can I find out more? www.walkni.com
Botanic Gardens Where is it? College Park Botanic Avenue, BT7 1LP.
Why we love it? Botanic Gardens is an important part of Belfast’s Victorian heritage and a popular meeting place for residents, students and tourists. Originally known as the Belfast Botanic Garden, the site contained exotic tree species and impressive plant collections from the southern hemisphere, many of which can still be seen in the park. It’s also home to the Palm House and the Tropical Ravine. When can I visit? From 7.30am. Closing time changes seasonally. Where can I find out more? www.belfastcity.gov.uk/leisure/parks
