Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. - Oprah Winfrey
I
f you are reading this, it is likely that the world has not yet come to an end (either that or you managed to escape to a hammock in Zanzibar and drink cocktails with the otherwise bloodthirsty zombies). Last month, we decided to drink as much wine as possible before the predicted apocalypse. The result is a bumper wine section in this month’s edition, which showcases the best of the Cape’s viticultural pursuits. Before embarking on the big drinking spree, we lined our stomachs at Hout Bay’s famous Mariner’s Wharf. We then headed off to the pristine Grootbos Private Nature Reserve to enjoy our collection of wines whilst watching the sun set over the West Coast’s Walker Bay. After a long, hard
month of excess and indulgence, we booked ourselves in at the Taj Cape Town’s Jiva Grande Spa to detoxify our bodies and minds in the most pleasurable of ways. We hope that you had a great festive season and that you are ready to start the New Year with a safari or three. We show you what was in our Christmas stockings in our new ‘Shop’ section and investigate some of the Southern African books that have been on our wish list for years. Here’s to a year of inspiration and exploration.

Waterkloof still SA’s Best Architecture & Landscapes champion
Waterkloof Estate, a biodynamic marvel on the outskirts of Somerset West renowned for its sustainable wine farming ethics, reaffirmed its status as the Great Wine Capitals (GWC) Best of Wine Tourism Awards 2013 by clinching South Africa’s Best Architecture and Landscape title for the second consecutive year. In addition to retaining the sought-after title, Waterkloof also excelled with second place in both the Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices and Wine Tourism Restaurants categories of this annual competition run by the GWC. In 2009, the magnificently appointed ‘cellar in the sky’ – where even the steep incline provides functional advantages in the winemaking process – triumphed as the first South African architectural feat for Castle Rock Design. The principle of Waterkloof’s design was based around its commitment to honesty, transparency and authenticity. Cocooned in a contemporary glass and concrete sphere, the deep, open barrel cellar introduces guests making their way to the slick wine tasting lounge that spills onto the ‘glass box’ fine dining restaurant which is gorgeously appointed in a 10 meter high glass promontory. Visit www.waterkloofwines.co.za for more.

ocated in the stunning turquoise-blue of the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania, the Zanzibar archipelago consists of the Island of Unguja (commonly known as Zanzibar) and the Pemba Islands, as well as a handful of scattered islets. Omani Arabs, Persians, Sumerians, Egyptians and the Dutch and English have all been heavily involved in trade around these unspoiled, idyllic East African Islands, thus creating the rich and diverse cultural history of Zanzibar. Before gaining independence on 10 December 1963, Zanzibar was controlled for a time by the Portuguese, Omani Sultans and the British. The Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896 is known as the shortest in history, as it came to a conclusion less than an hour after beginning. It seems that military engagement was not in the Hakuna Mata spirit and therefore not worth pursuing. During my time in Zanzibar, I stayed at the Azanzi Beach Hotel, located on the North Eastern coast of the island in Matemwe. As you approach the resort, Azanzi’s thatched roofs and wooden walkways seem to sprout up almost organically from its surroundings, blending perfectly with the palm trees that camouflage the hideaway haven.
Lunch is served on a beautifully set table on the beach and you can enjoy local favourites like traditional Swahili Stew (Chuku Chuku), whole baby Tasi Fish tossed in Swahili coconut sauce (Samaki Wa Kupaka) or simpler universal picks like a cheeseburger with chips. Dinner is served on the second floor deck, which is sheltered by a thatched roof but without walls to obstruct the breathtaking views of the moon-bathed Indian Ocean. Azanzi Beach Hotel is a spot so idyllic that a man from the US traveled all the way there with his entire family to propose to his long-term girlfriend on the coral reef that extends the length of three rugby pitches from the shore. The highly trained, diligent staff of the Azanzi Beach Hotel provide guides and expert advice on all local excursion opportunities. After all, there is enough to do in Zanzibar to occupy a month of purposeful travel, let alone a week. Take a peaceful walk through the tranquil Jozani forest or relax on a Nungwi sundowner trip. Enjoy a traditional mbarika leaf massage after a full-day fishing excursion or jet-ski around the various islands. No trip to Zanzibar is complete without a visit to Stone Town, the musical mecca of Freddie Mercury’s childhood. 16

The maze of narrow, cobblestone streets of Stone Town is reminiscent of an Arabic Florence, will all roads leading to the Indian Ocean. The architecture is the perfect blend of the Indian, English, African and Arabic influences in this region, boasting a history as rich as its spices. Marvel at the artistry of intricately designed, hand-carved wooden doors adorned with brass spikes to create formidable, breathtaking facades. Although explorer, missionary and philanthropist Dr. David Livingstone was born in Scotland, a part of him will remain forever in Africa, as the crucifix that hangs in the Anglican Cathedral of Zanzibar was carved from the tree under which his heart was buried. After vacationing in over 30 countries, I can safely say that Zanzibar boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Admire the modest yet resilient construction of fishing dhows up close, noting the use of string and stick fastens over iron nails. Scuba dive around the Mnemba Atoll as dolphins play around you during a truly interactive aquatic safari. The ocean is kind enough to reveal its treasures to you once a day, as the tide draws out 350 meters during low tide and you can pick up the temporarily beached starfish or learn to identify short-spine sea urchins on any given day. For the adventurous traveler, I strongly recommend a spice tour. Leave the hand sanitizer in the car for this two-hour trek with a machete around a spice farm, digging up and sampling spices at the literal root of their origin. Learn about the source of many popular seasonings like turmeric, curry, vanilla, clove and lime as your knowledgeable guide reveals the culinary and medicinal purpose of each. At Azanzi Beach Hotel, you kick back like Sultan Majid bin Said for affordable prices and if you take a walk down to a local restaurant, you will truly be considered poa kichizi kama ndizi (cool like a banana). In the words of Timon and Pumbaa: “It’s our problem-free philosophy. Hakuna matata.”

t Simonsig Estate the pursuit for excellence knows no boundaries. Celebrating a winemaking legacy of more than four decades, the pioneering landmark in the premier Stellenbosch wine region is one of South Africa’s most prominent wine dynasties, noted worldwide for its devotion to quality and innovation. Named after the spectacular views of the Simonsberg, this legendary wine estate is endowed with an idyllic location where a cool maritime climate and quintessential terroir effortlessly intertwine to create world- class wines. Simonsig’s impressive wine range represents the full spectrum of wine styles available in South Africa and manifests their exceptional viticultural expertise of matching different varietals to their unique terroir. Simonsig, spearheaded by its late founder Frans Malan, has been a major pioneer in the South African wine industry. Today its pioneering spirit lives on, visible through an extensive range of distinctive red, white and Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines, crafted under the guidance of renowned cellarmaster Johan Malan. Some of Simonsig’s groundbreaking innovations include
South Africa’s first Méthode Cap Classique, Kaapse Vonkel, released over 40 years ago in 1971. The estate was also among the first to produce a Rhine Riesling, a wooded white wine and a Chardonnay in the country. Frans Malan was also one of the three founders of the renowned Stellenbosch Wine Route in 1971. Simonsig released its first red wine in 1970 and they continue to raise the benchmark particularly for South African Pinotage today, consistently reaping top awards for the esteemed Red Hill Pinotage. The estate’s flagship red wines include the Frans Malan and Simonsig Tiara. The Frans Malan is Simonsig’s famous Cape Blend and a worthy tribute to the estate’s late founder and family patriarch, while the Simonsig Tiara is a Bordeaux-style blend that has clinched numerous awards and top international ratings. Simonsig’s signature restaurant, Cuvée, is wine’s perfect partner. This unique restaurant embraces food and wine lovers in a stylish setting with its eclectic décor, Cape inspired menu and above all its genuine winelands hospitality. www.simonsig.co.za.

Moscato 2012 The Perfect Perlé Wine for Summer
Make the most of the superb South African weather this summer with a chilled glass of De Krans Moscato 2012.
M
oscato tends to be a popular white wine among new wine lovers and enjoys a significant following of seasoned wine enthusiasts who enjoy a lighter-styled wine with brunch, dessert or on its own as an accomplished aperitif. Winemaker Boets Nel describes the De Krans Moscato 2012 as a full-flavoured natural sweet perlé wine made to be enjoyed throughout the year. The light-bodied wine displays tones of honey and exotic spice with a fresh, mouth-watering aftertaste. Intended to be consumed young while fresh and vibrant, this wine is best enjoyed chilled and is the perfect partner to apple desserts, fresh berries, summer salads, meringue pies and hazelnut-based desserts. Although dessert is Moscato’s forte, it also works beautifully with cheese courses, charcuterie or antipasto dishes. Its versatility, with a definitive balance of sweetness and acidity, and the lower alcohol also make Moscato an ideal aperitif candidate, though it has certainly earned its stripes as the wine world’s most fashionable brunch-time guest as well. Be sure not to miss out on this summer’s thirst quencher, which retails for approximately R44 per bottle and is available at many retail outlets throughout South Africa or can be ordered directly from De Krans Wine Cellar. www.dekrans.co.za

e Wetshof is a third generation wine estate in South Africa’s Robertson Valley, where wine has been made for over 150 years. Here Danie de Wet, proprietor and cellar-master, is assisted by sons and co-owners Johann (viticulture and marketing) and Peter (winemaker). De Wetshof Estate is a pioneer of noble white wines in South Africa and was also instrumental in introducing certain superior red cultivars to the Robertson Wine Valley. Danie, Johann and Peter still base the values of De Wetshof on those laid down by previous generations of De Wet wine farmers. The region’s vineyards are allowed to express the unique characteristics of soil and climate in producing the best grapes for each specific wine. Quality is monitored and enhanced by the optimum use of science and technology. This commitment to site-specific vineyard management and wine-making has been an integral part of the De Wetshof ethos from the outset and remains a vital and non-negotiable aspect of all the Estate’s wines. As their next custodians, the current generation will ensure that these values remain at the soul of De Wetshof for the years to come, with the main aim of providing the international wine consumer with a true expression of South Africa’s finest.

leur du Cap’s elegant unfiltered wines excelled at the 2012 Veritas Awards, the Oscars of South Africa’s wine competitions, with a Double Gold medal for the ultra-elegant 2011 Chardonnay and a Gold medal for the 2010 Merlot. Showing great consistency, the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Chardonnay 2011 is the second consecutive vintage of this wine to achieve Double Gold status at the Veritas Awards. The superbly polished wine, crafted by the winemaking team at Die Bergkelder, shows delicious citrus, apricot and toasted almond aromas with just a touch of vanilla in the background. The palate is full-bodied and beautifully rounded from regular lees stirring during eight months of barrel maturation and reveals an abundance of fruit on the palate. The Veritas Gold medallist, Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2010, is a beautiful ruby red wine that teems with strawberry and red berry fruit with hints of white chocolate. The firm yet silky tannins evolve into a velvety texture that lingers on the finish. www.fleurducap.co.za

Africology
The skilled individuals who lovingly formulate the Africology range share a passion for the healing essence of plant life and the restorative power of essential oils. Combining this insight with a deep respect for traditional healing, they create products that are intended to have a positive effect on peoples’ inner and outer energies. Africology skin care products are developed to revitalize the skin and prevent damage caused by free radicals, stress and the harsh South African climate. Their most important botanical ingredients include marula, African potato, aloe vera and rooibos. Marula oil, made from the marula fruit seed kernel, can be used as a type of skin care oil. It contains antioxidants and oleaic acid. African Potato balances the immune system and keeps it regulated. Aloe Vera is a valuable plant high in nutritional value and rich in healing compounds and minerals, amino acids, lipids, enzymes and mono saccharides. Traditional healers apply aloe juice to wounds, and it is also used internally as a general tonic. Rooibos tea extract is known in South Africa for its

Provenance
‘Provenance’ originates from the French word ‘Provenir’, which means ‘Place of Origin’. The rose geranium oil in all Provenance products has been steam distilled from plants grown on Provenance Farm in the Western Cape’s Koo Valley, where the geranium was discovered by botanists in the 16th century. The products are made with natural and harmless ingredients, are free from parabens and harsh chemicals and are especially formulated for sensitive skins. The famous Provenance All Purpose Massage Balm is a smooth balm containing a nourishing blend of butters and oils to massage away cellulite, joint pain, tension or tired muscles while hydrating and revitalizing the skin. The product has multiple uses. It can be used as deodorant due to the high content of anti-bacterial rose geranium oil. It is effective in healing cold sores, chapped lips, sun spots, cracked heels and dry elbows. Explorations
through Southern Africa’s realities Text & Images: © Pan Macmillan
No Time Like the Present (Nadine Gordimer) Nadine Gordimer, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, has been described by the Independent as ‘one of the world’s greatest writers’ with a ‘rootedness in a political time, place and faith [that] has never dimmed her complex gifts as an artist’. Simply reading No Time Like the Present will make you feel as though you have visited South Africa. In the tremendous work, Gordimer brings the reader into the lives of Steven Reed and Jabulile Gumede, a ‘mixed’ couple, both of whom have been combatants in the struggle for freedom against apartheid. Once clandestine lovers under racist law forbidding sexual relations between black and white, they are now in the new South Africa. The place and time where freedom – the ‘better life for all’ that was fought for and promised – is being created but also challenged by political and racial tensions worldwide, while the hangover of moral ambiguities and the vast and growing gap between affluence and the mass poverty continue to haunt the present. No freedom from personal involvement in these or in the personal intimacy of love. The subject is contemporary, but Gordimer’s treatment is timeless. In No Time Like the Present, she shows herself once again as a master novelist, at the height of her prodigious powers.

The food we eat is as colourful as the cultures of the people eating it. But why we eat the way we do runs deeper than the whims of our traditions or palates. The Hungry Season takes Leonie Joubert and Eric Miller into the lives of people in eight southern African places to trace, in accessible narrative and compelling photographs, the complex undercurrents driving food security in urban spaces: childhood stunting and malnutrition; the shift from traditional ‘African’ to ‘Western’ diets; illnesses associated with modern diet; nutritional literacy, behavior and choices; large-scale food production and urban food gardens; poverty, joblessness and the layout of the city; supermarkets and the full food value chain; and food wastage. 51
in the know
The Hungry Season looks at hunger and malnutrition in the city, hidden behind layers of affluence and comfort. It tackles the fundamental question: Why is it that southern Africa seems to produce enough calories and nutrients to keep the region full, satisfied and well nourished, and yet still has so many people living with hunger or the fear of hunger? Leonie Joubert is a South African thought leader and recipient of two Honorary Sunday Times Alan Paton Non-fiction Awards. Eric Muller is an award-winning documentary photographer who focuses on a wide range of social issues that confront communities across the continent.

Mukiwa (Peter Godwin) First published in 1996, Mukiwa is an award-winning memoir of a white boy growing up in Rhodesia as it went through a violent transition to majority rule. In Rhodesia in the 1960s, Peter Godwin inhabited a magical and frightening world of leopard hunting, lepers, witch doctors, snakes and forest fires. As an adolescent, a conscript caught in the middle of a vicious civil war, and then as an adult who returned to Zimbabwe as a journalist to cover the bloody transition to majority rule, he discovered a land stalked by death and danger. Nadine Gordimer describes the work as ‘a totally unsentimental, honest testimony – written without fear of who, white or black, might be shocked – of the conflict, confusion and compromises [of the situation]’. She continues to hail it as ‘part of the truth about the era of colonialism and its consequences that must be pieced together, now, in the history of this, the century for which we are all, in one way or another, responsible’. Doris Lessing goes so far as to describe Mukiwa as ‘the best to come out of the war for independence in Zimbabwe’. Picador has re-published the work this year in celebration of its 40th birthday.
I Write What I Like (Steve Biko) I Write What I Like features the writing of activist, Black Consciousness leader and one of Africa’s most courageous heroes, Steve Biko. Before his untimely death at the age of 30, Biko was instrumental in uniting black Africans in the struggle against the apartheid government in South Africa. I Write What I Like is a collection of Biko’s columns published in the journal of the South African Students’ Organisation under the pseudonym ‘Frank Talk’. It contains other pieces written by Biko, a preface by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and a moving personal reflection by Father Aelred Stubbs, a friend and confidant to Biko. Archbishop Desmond Tutu hails this new edition, published in 2012 in celebration of Picador’s 40th birthday, as a resource to ‘enable us to savour the inspired words of Steve Biko’. He goes further to muse that ‘perhaps it could just spark a black renaissance’. As David Cohen asserts, ‘South Africa today could have used a leader like Steve Biko. His writings show him to be a man of great intelligence, and the accompanying essay by Father Stubbs shows Biko to be a leader of great charisma. Read this book and you’ll see what the world lost when Biko was slain.’ www.panmacmillan.co.za 52

Shumbalala rests on one of the country’s great tracts of game land. Set in a dry, singeing savanna quartered by easterly-flowing rivers, the land is an ancient tapestry of natural wonder. The reserve is blessed with an abundance of species, including 147 mammals (including the Big 5) and 507 bird species. Qualified rangers conduct relaxed but informative morning and evening game drives and bush walks. S
ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.
02Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

Greyhound (+27 83 915 9000), InterCape (+27 21 380 4400) and Translux (+27 861 589 282) are the three main bus services in South Africa. All flights and bus tickets can be booked via Computicket at www.computicket.com or by calling +27 83 915 8000.
Trains
For budget trips across the country, Shosholoza Meyl is the best service available. Book online at www.shosholozameyl.co.za and enquiries can be directed to +27 86 000 8888. If you decide to splurge, though, there are three outstanding options. The famous Blue Train (+27 12 334 8459), Rovos Rail (+27 12 315 8242) and Premier Classe (+27 86 000 8888) are luxurious liners with all the bells and whistles.

A Note for Smokers South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
