Letlhogonolo Sealetsa I want to say that it’s hard to believe that it’s already August, but if I look back at all the experiences we’ve been privileged enough to enjoy over the past few months I realise that, while time has certainly flown, we’ve travelled, wined and dined enough for the average lifetime over the past few months alone. While we’re certainly enjoying the Ultimate African experience ourselves, what’s most important to us is that we are able to share all of these wonderful opportunities with you in a way that inspires
you to embark on your own weird and wonderful adventures. After all, where else can you sleep out in the bush, contribute to invaluable conservation efforts, indulge in world-class dining, party up a storm and retreat into the indulgent oblivion of a seaside spa, all in a single weekend? Our vibrant and diverse continent really does have everything to offer, and we hope that you enjoy discovering its many facets as much as we enjoy sharing them.

SAN HUNTERS The Khoisan people of the Northern Cape are descended from two different tribes. An amalgam of the original San hunter-gatherers and the later-arriving KhoiKhoi, they were virtually annihilated by subsequent settlers. But the Khoisan culture lives on through some of the most compelling rock art on Earth.

hoisan is a term used by physical anthropologists to distinguish the aboriginal people of southern Africa from their black African farming neighbours. The original San hunter-gatherer groups lived on this land for about 100 000 years before the arrival of other black people and European settlers. When the pastoral KhoiKhoi appeared 2 000 years ago, they saw people similar to them in physical appearance, but with a different culture. They called these elders of the land ‘the San’, which means ‘people different from ourselves’. The San men usually hunted antelope using bows and arrows smeared with poison. Before a hunt, a shaman would conduct a religious ceremony. He would enter a trance and his vision was recorded on a rock by way of painting. This rock art is now a central feature of our heritage. The Khoi brought pastoralism to the San – with their sheep and cattle contributing to a balanced diet. Unlike the San, who did not live in a hierarchical society, the Khoi had a complex social structure. These two cultures would later merge and become known as the Khoisan people.

It is a sad part of South African history that these two vibrant and culturally-rich tribes are now almost extinct; with Khoisan culture pushed to the periphery of our society. But they have left an indelible mark on our society. The distinct clicks of their language, once found nowhere else in Africa, have been incorporated into Zulu and Xhosa speech. They have also contributed to the richness of Afrikaans and South African English with words such as ‘eina’ (ouch) and ‘aikhona’ (absolutely not). And place names like Karoo and Keiskamma.

Beyond the sphere of daily chores, Khoisan traditions include snuff and makaranga tobacco. This is a very strong tobacco that is mixed with wild honey and made into a paste before being allowed to dry. In Namaqualand traditions include distinct dress and music adapted from their heritage and early Boer influences. San heritage lives on through rock art and scientific studies of these gentle hunter-gatherers. The San Bushmen of South Africa were the country’s original inhabitants, and very likely the ancestors of all humanity. Today remnants of these fascinating people can still be found in the Northern Cape. The rich Bushman or San heritage is that of the original people of southern Africa. It is even believed that the genes of the San Bushmen of South Africa predate the rest of humanity, making them our original ancestors. Nomadic bands lived on the land for approximately 100 000 years before the arrival of other groups. When the pastoral Khoikhoi appeared 2 000 years ago they saw people similar to them in physical appearance, but with a different culture. They called these elders of the land ‘the San’, which means ‘people different from ourselves’. The San Bushmen lived in small groups in the desert before dispersing to the rest of the country. There they lived under rock overhangs in the mountains, or in dry areas in simple huts made of leaves, twigs and animal skins. The San men usually hunted antelope using bows and arrows, which had been smeared with poison.
Before a hunt, a shaman would conduct a religious ceremony. He would enter a trance and his vision was recorded on a rock by way of painting. In the San culture, women stayed in villages or homesteads, looking after the children. They foraged for food around the camp, searching for edible bulbs, roots, stalks and fruit. Other duties included making clothing sewn together by catgut. An important aspect of the San culture took place at night when stories would be told to music played on rudimentary instruments. But the music stopped when other groups and settlers entered the region. In time the San were driven further and further north into the more arid areas of the country. Today, there are only a few distinct communities of San left. But their rich culture lives on through their rock art and the work of anthropologists searching for the origins of modern man. History and culture tours are the perfect beginning or end to any business meeting or conference and will help visitors gain insight into the complex history and cultures that make South Africa what it is today. Visit ancient landscapes, explore cultural villages and learn more about the layers that make up the fabric of South Africa’s society. From there make your way to the Mphebatho Museum in Soulspoort (on the border of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve) and find out more about the Bakgatla-ba-Kgafela traditions. History and culture pre- and post-tours in Limpopo province may include a visit to the famous Modjadji Cycad Reserve – where you will hear all about the legendary Rain Queen of Lobedu. For something a little different make your way to Thohoyandou where the Venda people live and investigate local traditions such as the domba (snake) dance and the myths and legends of Lake Fundudzi and the Vondo Forest (both sacred sites). KwaZulu-Natal is the heart of the Zulu Kingdom, and guided tours offer insights into Zulu culture. The province is also home to the largest Indian population outside of India, so visit Grey Street in Durban and learn about the local Indian community. Make sure you try out the famous Durban ‘bunny chow’ while you’re at it. History and culture activities in the Northern Cape will expose visitors to ancient San culture and traditions, and the various aspects of Basotho culture are worth exploring when visiting the Free State province. The Basotho Cultural Village in the Eastern Free State is one of the finest cultural villages in the country. The Eastern Cape is the heart of Xhosa culture and this province is known for its struggle history – which is not surprising as Nelson Mandela was born here. The Western Cape offers a wealth of opportunity for history and culture lovers – visit the Castle of Good Hope, Robben Island, the District Six Museum or the Bo-Kaap Museum… and that’s just on day one. History and culture tours offer so much for the traveller seeking a deeper insight into modern-day South Africa and may well inspire your next business gathering.

KNYSNA
KNYSNA, THE JEWEL OF THE GARDEN ROUTE
A
t a time when most South Africans are a little worn at the edges from a busy year, there is perhaps no place more wonderful for a revitalising holiday than the picturesque town of Knysna. Nestled amid lush indigenous forests and only an hour’s drive from George, Knysna caters for all types of holidaymakers, from families with tiny tots or school-going youngsters, grandparents and extended families to newlyweds, dinkies and groups of varsity mates. Being one of the last towns along the world famous Garden Route, it is as if the Western Cape was simply saving the best for last. Beauty can be found in all directions, whether it be the pristine lagoon, white beaches and blue ocean, or the deep green of the surrounding forests, in which you may stumble across hidden lakes and waterfalls. Who knew that even the name “Knysna” means "ferns" in Khoikhoi? It just goes to show that the natural beauty of the area has been making an impact on people for thousands of years! The small but bustling town is famous not only for its forests, but also the estuary on which it is

situated. The Knysna estuary is South Africa’s largest and most ecologically important estuary. According to SANParks, it hosts almost half of the country’s estuarine species, and is home to the endangered Knysna seahorse, which can only be spotted in three estuaries in the world (the other two are Swartvlei and Keurbooms). While the seahorse has become an iconic symbol for the local community, not everyone is into odd little critters. Fortunately, there’s plenty to do and more than enough places to eat, drink and be merry. The small town allows for a leisurely way of life where visitors can browse quaint shops and enjoy lazy afternoon coffees at sidewalk cafes, or let time pass gently over gourmet food and good conversations. The locals are known for being friendly and cheerful, and they are always happy to share a smile and a laugh with their guests. For those who enjoy water, the lagoon and ocean offer an opportunity to escape the summer heat and go paddling, sailing, surfing or fishing, or even whale, dolphin or seal watching if you’re there from winter through spring. Charter a boat and head off to the Featherbed Nature Reserve, or possibly around the Knysna Heads to witness some of the most gorgeous scenery that the South
African coastline has to offer. Heading inland, there is even more to entertain. The forests offer their own adventures, including hiking or mountain biking trails, 4x4 drives, abseiling, bird watching (where you might even see the elusive Knysna Loerie), and horse riding. The forest is still home to many bird species, antelope, monkeys, and even elephant (though these are rarely spotted by humans). Kids will also have plenty to keep them busy, including treetop canopy tours, Monkey Land, or mashie golf. You can also get a round of golf in at any of the area’s three magnificent courses: Simola Golf Course designed by Jack Nicklaus, Pezula Champion Golf Course, or the Knysna Golf Course. Of course, if you look to the skies, there is always more to do for those daring enough to play among the clouds. You can test your bravery with microlighting, skydiving, or the world’s highest bungee jump at Bloukrans – if you’re keen to trust your ankles attached to an elastic rope as you plummet toward the face of the earth. As the activities cater for all types in Knysna, so does the accommodation. Hostels and five star luxury hotels are fairly common in terms of the normal tourist accommodation options, but you could also try houseboats, tree houses, log cabins, or even experience “township living” to really experience home-grown hospitality in every possibly way.

Weather wise, Knysna is warm all year round. In fact, Knysna is so idyllic that it has become a perfect place to showcase South Africa’s activities and to host events. The Knysna Speed Festival is held for motor enthusiasts, Gastronomica and the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival is held in July, and then the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and the Rastafarian Earth Festival have all chosen to return on an annual basis. The Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival is arguably the town’s biggest annual event, as it encompasses a range of sporting competitions over its ten day period, as well as arts and other cultural activities and displays. Roughly 200,000 of the world’s tastiest oysters are consumed over the event! If you plan to stay in the town itself, there are some great shopping options. Whether you wind your way through smaller arts and crafts shops, or visit the slightly larger malls, the hidden treasures are all worth a little bit of digging – and they are numerous! There are also nearby markets that open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and are well worth a visit.

It’s springtime in South Africa, and time to head for the beach. The country has more than 2,500 km of coastline, stretching from the cold waters off the arid West Coast region, southwards around the tip of Africa, and heading up again all the way to the lush St Lucia estuary in the east.

WEST COAST The West Coast is less crowded than most of the coastline in summer. It’s not as lush as the other side of the country, and the water is pretty darn cold, but there are some major attractions. The birding is great, particularly in places such as the West Coast National Park and the little-known Verlorenvlei near Elands Bay. Water sports enthusiasts can kitesurf or paddle in Langebaan, or surf at Elands Bay or a dozen other great spots. If you like seafood, have lunch at Muisbosskerm near Elands Bay. It’s a West Coast tradition. This extremely casual establishment consists of a simple shelter right on the beach. You can enjoy the freshest imaginable seafood cooked on an open fire and served with homemade bread. It’s a shoes-andshirts-optional kind of experience. CAPE TOWN Cape Town has some of the best beaches in the world, but the water is also pretty chilly. Hang out on Clifton if you want to spot an A-list celebrity, go to Muizenberg if you want to learn to surf, see the penguins on Boulders Beach, or rub shoulders with the local bronzed wrinklies at Fish Hoek, which is possibly the most perfect of South Africa’s beaches. Cape Town is the city of choice for the brave of heart. Learn to dive, try sandboarding, paddle a kayak in the sea, hike through the Table Mountain National Park, or do a tandem skydive with Table Mountain in the background. Brave the summer wind and go kite surfing. For something a little different, try riding a camel near

Noordhoek Beach, or take your kids to Butterfly World near Paarl where they can stand mesmerised by a living kaleidoscope of psychedelic wings flitting past their noses. Walking up Lion’s Head on a full moon evening, watching the sun set and the moon rise and walking down in the silvery light is such a great experience that it’s worth braving the crowds to do. You won’t find solitude, though. You won’t be alone at the Kirstenbosch Sunday Concerts either, but it’s also worth doing that. And don’t forget the wine.
“
Wherever you choose to go on this beautiful coast, play it safe. Use loads of sunscreen and a hat, save your sundowners for sundown, don’t drink and swim, and be realistic about your abilities.

ere’s some insider info on South Africa's best beaches, to help you make the most of your time at the seaside.
SOUTHERN CAPE Hermanus on the Southern Cape Coast, which is also called the Overberg, expands to bursting point in the summer months with wall-to-wall people, but some of the other smaller towns are not quite as crowded. Well, only just. Gansbaai is the centre of the shark cage-diving industry so you could get up close and personal with a Great White. You can also do a wine-tasting tour through some of the most southerly vineyards in the world, visit the southernmost tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas, or explore the huge sea cave at Arniston.

THE GARDEN ROUTE The Garden Route, with its tangled forests and deep river gorges fronting white beaches or craggy headlands, is heaven on earth. The Southern Right whales have gone back to Antarctica for the summer, but there are dolphins aplenty, and you may spot some humpbacks or even Bryde’s whales, either from shore or on a boat trip. You could do an escorted hike along the coast, either on the beaches near Mossel Bay, through the wetlands between Wilderness and Knysna, or along the spectacular rocky coastline of the Tsitsikamma National Park. If you’re looking for more than sun, sand and sea, you could do a tree-top canopy tour, brave the highest bungee jump in the world, mountain bike or hike in the fabulous Harkerville Forest, abseil a waterfall into the mysterious Kaaimans River, take a gentle cruise or paddle up the beautiful, forest-fringed, cola-dark Keurbooms River, or explore the magnificent wetlands of the Wilderness National Park. Wilderness has some of the best and most scenic paragliding in the country. There are more golf courses than you could shake a club at, and your credit card is likely to go into a hypoglycaemic coma with all the fabulous craft shops, art galleries and other tempting delights.
Destination Downtime
THE EASTERN CAPE The Eastern Cape is the place for a real beach holiday. Port Elizabeth, East London, Jeffrey’s Bay, Cape St Francis and, to a lesser extent, Port Alfred all revolve around their beaches. Port Elizabeth is family-friendly, with a beach for every reason. If you head out to the wild side near Sardinia Bay, you can find an almost deserted stretch of sand to walk on, even at the height of summer. Close by you’ll find fabulous malaria-free game viewing in the Greater Addo Elephant National Park, as well as a range of smaller private game reserves, including Shamwari and Kwandwe. Not far from Port Alfred is the fascinating little town of Bathurst, with its range of cultural and historical attractions. A bit further afield, in Grahamstown, you can explore interesting and unusual museums, including the National Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, the National English Literary Museum, and the Observatory Museum, which houses the only genuine Victorian camera obscura in the Southern Hemisphere. Jeffrey’s Bay is the surf centre of the universe, at least to the cool surfer dudes who hang out there. But if you’re a really cool surfer dude, you should load your boards onto the roof of your battered

kombi and head off to one of the secret breaks on the Wild Coast. THE WILD COAST The Wild Coast is magic. The climate and vegetation is subtropical, with mangrove forests, turquoise lagoons, long, deserted beaches and small, scattered settlements where people live much the same way as they have for centuries. You can hike long or short sections of the coast while spending the night in a hotel or guesthouse, so you don’t have to carry food, sleeping bags and tents along with you. Phew! The Wild Coast is a great family holiday destination and almost every settlement has at least one vibey backpackers. Some of the best are in Cintsa and Coffee Bay. It’s also a great cultural destination, as most of these have a good relationship with the people who live nearby. For a really interesting cultural and genuine ecotourism experience, you can’t beat Bulungula near Coffee Bay. SOUTH COAST The South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal consists of a string of beautiful beaches, river mouths and lagoons all fringed by an almost continuous ribbon
THE NORTH COAST The North Coast is rather like a more refined version of the South Coast. It’s a bit more tropical, and maybe a bit wilder, but the developers seem to have been a tad more restrained – or at least more discerning. As well as awesome beach options, there is the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board in Umhlanga Rocks, where you can find out more about these fascinating, beautiful and much-maligned animals. Numerous exclusive golf estates and resorts also lie tucked away behind the dunes.

DURBAN Jeffrey’s Bay is not the surf capital of South Africa. Durban is. The only surf museum in the country is here – on the beachfront – and the surf is great. The beaches are a cultural experience. Bronzed surfers rub broad shoulders while elegant, sari-clad matrons stroll on the sand; bead-bedecked traditional healers collect sea water in plastic bottles, while charismatic preachers perform al fresco baptisms and small children build sand castles. The city extends virtually to the high water mark and harassed, deskbound wage slaves shuck their jackets and ties at lunchtime to jog along the beachfront or catch a quick wave.

Toss a couple of notes to the sand sculptors who create fantastic ephemeral works of art on the beach, buy a basket from the craft sellers, and take a ride in a rickshaw. To find out more about what lies under the warm Indian Ocean, visit the water rides and aquariums at uShaka Marine World, where you can – literally – swim with the fishes. And before you leave, don’t neglect to get a taste of bunny chow (a hollowed-out half-loaf of bread filled with spicy Indian curry), Durban’s signature contribution to world cuisine.

There are interesting hikes, and you can paddle on the St Lucia estuary to check out the crocodiles, hippos and birds. The fishing is good, and the small town of St Lucia is often overrun by fishermen. The fishermen also hang out at Sodwana Bay, but there they’re outnumbered by the divers who flock there to explore Africa’s most southerly coral reefs. It’s pretty crowded, but it’s worth it. artenberg Wine Estate in Stellenbosch has continued its recent winning streak by being awarded The International Trophy for Best Bordeaux Varietals (under £15) at the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA). A Gold medal was also awarded to the estate’s Stork Shiraz 2010. The DWWA is the world’s largest wine industry competition, with representation from wine countries across the globe. This year the panel judging the South African wines was chaired by Lynne Sherriff MW leading a team of influential judges from across the wine industry. The International Trophy taste-off was presided over by Competition Chairman Steven Spurrier, who was joined by the Vice-Chair Gerard Basset OBE MS MW, as well as three Regional Chairs. Winning an International Trophy at the DWWA is regarded as the crème de la crème in the industry. This year only 33 wines out of the 15007 entered were awarded International Trophies. When the Hartenberg Cabernet 2010 was awarded a Gold medal in the main tasting it was re-tasted against other Gold medals in the same category from South Africa, where it was awarded the DWWA Regional Trophy. It was then re-tasted against other countries’ Regional Trophy winners, ultimately scooping its status as one of the 2014 DWWA International Trophy winners. Last year the Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 collected a Veritas Gold medal. The tasting panel described it as “bursting with cassis, dark berries and plums, with plenty of fruit sweetness - a wine with no hard edges and a world away from leafy, green Bordeaux blends at this price level.” The Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect wine to enjoy during the cold winter months, either on its own or with hearty comfort food such as rich casseroles, springbok fillet and other venison dishes or beef fillet. The awardwinning wine is available directly from the cellar at R125 per bottle. For further information visit www.hartenbergestate.com.

his is an insider’s blow-by-blow account of the release of Nelson Mandela and the dismantling of apartheid by the ambassador who was in the midst of these events. Appointed to South Africa as Margaret Thatcher’s envoy, Lord Renwick became a personal friend of Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk and Mangosuthu Buthelezi, acting as a trusted intermediary between them. He paints a vivid portrait of Mandela, describing his meetings with him immediately after his release, inviting him to his first meal in a restaurant in Johannesburg for 27 years, and rehearsing him for his meeting with Margaret Thatcher – and telling Thatcher that she must not interrupt him! **Mission to South Africa** is Renwick’s account based on hitherto unpublished Foreign Office and 10 Downing Street records at the time.

01 Health sunburn is a potential health hazard
S
ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.
02 Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.
03 Travel Options AIR
There are several domestic airlines in South Africa, including South African Airways, South African Express, Interlink, Airlink and British Airways. Low-cost carriers include: 1time, Kulula and Mango.
BUS
Greyhound (+27 83 915 9000), InterCape (+27 21 380 4400) and Translux (+27 861 589 282) are the three main bus services in South Africa. All flights and bus tickets can be booked via Computicket at www.computicket.com or by calling +27 83 915 8000.
TRAINS
For budget trips across the country, Shosholoza Meyl is the best service available. Book online at www.shosholozameyl.co.za and enquiries can be directed to +27 86 000 8888. If you decide to splurge, though, there are three outstanding options. The famous Blue Train (+27 12 334 8459), Rovos Rail (+27 12 315 8242) and Premier Classe (+27 86 000 8888) are luxurious liners with all the bells and whistles.
CARS
Most of the main car rental companies have outlets at the international airports and in major centres. In South Africa, we drive on the left side of the road. The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. Foreign members of the Automobile Association (AA) can register as a temporary member in South Africa at any local AA branch. For more information, phone +27 83 843 2222.

A NOTE FOR SMOKERS South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
