hey say Africa is still home to hidden treasures, Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge is one of them. According to early Portuguese accounts, the Tsonga people lived in the central and southern areas of Mozambique during the early 16th century. During most of the 19th century, they settled in the Mpumalanga Province near the present-day Kruger National Park and made a living hunting and fishing. At the end of the 19th century, however, in order to establish the Kruger National Park, conservationists closed down most of the area that was home to the Tsonga people and hunting and fishing became illegal. Fortunately not all was lost, as today one of the largest groups of Tsonga people still live in the Kruger National Park, offering an interactive cultural experience, at Hoyo Hoyo Safari Lodge, steeped in modern day opulence and luxury. SHANGAAN WAY OF LIFE THE SHANGANA CULTURAL VILLAGE IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN PROVINCE OF MPUMALANGA
O
wned by the Mapulana community, the venture has created over 200 jobs in an area which once had an unemployment rate of 80%. Shangana is a cluster of traditional villages midway between the Blyde River Canyon and the southern Kruger National Park, where residents invite guests to share in the way of life of the Shangaan people. The villages are set in the shade of ancient trees in a reserve of forest and grassland, and are open every day. An African market village forms the centre of Shangana, where local craftspeople make and trade their craft. From here, trained guides lead guests down to villages on daytime tours, midday tours with lunch, and a magnificent evening festival at the chief's kraal. Marula Market The Marula Market has been described by many visitors as the most beautiful in Africa. A wide circle of huts looks down towards the Kruger Park, with trees all around. It is the central village at Shangana. The market is a gathering place for the region's craftspeople, offering a variety of traditional handcrafted art. Many of the artists work at home in nearby villages and leave their work at the market to be sold, making Marula an important source of income for the people of the area.

Soshangana (Manukosi) to conquer the Tsonga people in the area of presentday Mozambique. Soshangana found a fertile place inhabited by scattered
communities of peace-loving people, and he decided to make it his home rather than return to Shaka.
Over lunchtime, a full traditional meal is served in the village with the family. The wives of the chief wash the hands of the guests, and pots of food are brought from the fire and served. Guests are given portions of each item they choose on a carved wooden plate, and eat with an elegantly crafted wooden spoon.

In the centre of the market are clay and stone pieces, including carvings, statues and pots, and an oven used for firing clay work. The surrounding huts house the work of different crafters. Daytime tours During the day, small groups are led from the Marula Market through the bush and past fields, where a trained guide shows how the Shangaan people collect food from their environment, and explains a little about traditional farming. The route leads up to a village, the home of a Shangaan headman, his wives and children. In the village, the guide explains different facets of the Shangaan way of life, including their history and customs, initiation ceremonies, the practice of polygamy, the outfits and weapons of masocho (warriors), the construction of homes, ornate beadwork clothing, and food preparation. Guests are encouraged to touch, feel and participate, while the guide explains the etiquette necessary to ensure the privacy of the family. Guests then visit the kraal of the sangoma, a registered member of the Traditional Healers Association, who explains different medicines - and may throw his bones on request.

Evening festival As the sun sets over the mountains, guests are led through the bush towards the kraal of Chief Soshangana. As they approach, beating drums and warriors usher them through a passage of stone towers and flaming torches to the fire-lit circle of royal huts under the trees. During the evening festival choirs, actors and dancers tell the story of the Shangaan people. During the show, traditional beer and great wooden trays with local delicacies are passed around. Halfway through the show, the wives of the chief invite guests to divide into small groups to share a traditional feast in their houses with them. After this, guests return for the second half, which tells the more modern story of the Shangaans, and at the end guests are led out through a tunnel of singing choristers.

Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park exhibits an amazing number of diverse ecosystems with a corresponding diversity in plant, bird, and animal life. On the edge of an escarpment, is the luxurious and secluded Puku Ridge Camp, named after the puku antelope that graze in the fertile floodplain in front of the camp. Offering guests an authentic tented safari experience in South Luangwa, Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp is one of Zambia’s best areas for game viewing and bird spotting. Guests can spend an afternoon relaxing in the camp’s large living area in between thrilling game drives or walking safaris. You might even hear the Puku antelope whistling to one other when danger threatens. Kites, vultures, African hawk-eagles, falcons and other raptors took the opportunity to pluck snacks from the air. Many bats, we were told, would also fall from their roost in the forest and be eaten by opportunistic leopards, crocs and monitor lizards. Kasanka, despite its size, is considered to be one of the best bird watching parks on the continent, and with the rains came species we’d never seen. A boat ride up the Luwomwba River revealed African pygmy geese, fawn-breasted waxbills, marsh tchagras, coppery-tailed coucals, blue-mantled crested flycatchers, and Böhm’s bee-eaters… The list went on and on.

I
t began with the bats. Each year, as the rains start sometime in October, little Kasanka National Park, north of Lusaka, fills with straw-coloured fruit bats, inbound from the Congo. With its nine lakes and network of streams, rivers and grassy **dombos** interspersed between red mahogany swamp and indigenous forests, Kasanka is a handsome location for what is – in terms of sheer numbers – the world’s largest mammal migration. It’s estimated that by mid-November, some eight million of these creatures wing their way here, flying in to feed on the fruit of wild loquat (musuku) and waterberry trees. The bats roost in a patch of Mushitu forest along the Musola River. At dusk, we took guided walks to watch as they set out on their nocturnal flights. And at dawn we installed ourselves in a specially built tree hide, 18 metres up in a sprawling Mululu mahogany, from where we kept watch for sitatunga. It’s apparently the best spot in the world from which to observe these shy antelopes. We counted scores of

There were more birds and lots more predators at South Luangwa National Park, not too far from Kasanka. We were particularly interested in exploring the park on foot, so joined knowledgeable armed guides for daily walking safaris along the riverbanks, through groves of cathedral ebony trees, and around watery dambos plugged with Nile cabbage. It was a chance to get lost in the unfolding drama of animals responding to rising water levels, which altered the twisting-turning course of the life-bringing Luangwa River. The earth seemed insatiable, gobbling up the rains, transforming the park into a glistening patchwork of tributaries and lagoons, interspersed between the lush Mopani forests. There was animal activity everywhere, the rain bringing a palpable ease, signalling a time of abundance. On calm, steady, unrushed walks, we stopped to watch elephants – mixed herds of ancient matriarchs and curious youngsters – crossing the river in single file, pausing to play and fiddle and drink along the way. Crocodiles basked on river banks and, poking from the water’s surface, twitching ears and pairs of eyes and wet nostrils were often the only sign that submerged hippos were wallowing contentedly below. As the day’s heat simmered after late-afternoon downpours, we’d listen to the shrill whistles of gold-coloured puku and 28

the water to graze, and tree-climbing lions sprawled in the branches of gnarled, bendy fig trees. With its mix of savannah, woodland, and extensive wetlands, the park packs in huge bird numbers, including crowned cranes, woolly-necked and saddle-billed storks, and Goliath herons. Our seasonal bush camp was situated deep in the heart of the Busanga Plains, a marvellous wetland where we not only walked with guides, but also headed out on river cruises, fish eagles swooping overhead as we marvelled at the skills of pied kingfishers zipping in and out of the water, surfacing with fish in their beaks. And when we went out on drives, we were taken around in Africa’s first electrical game-drive vehicle, the "eLandy". Not only was it eco-friendly, but also marvellously quiet.

watch as waterbuck, Cookson’s wildebeest, bushbuck, zebra and giraffe appeared in multitudes across the plains. Back at Puku Ridge Camp, our smart ecofriendly tented lodge at the edge of the escarpment, we lazed on the deck and stared into the rain-soaked night. The shadows of wild dogs scampered across the horizon and elephants trumpeted happy choruses somewhere in the blackness. And we’d fall asleep listening to deep-bellied hippo grunts that sounded like the laughter of drunken clowns. Luangwe isn’t the kind of place you ever tire of, but we wanted to see another of Zambia’s lesser-known reserves, Kafue. Said to be the second-biggest national park on earth, it is vast and untamed; a raw, rugged, isolated expanse that feels like proper wilderness, centred on the Kafue River. We watched enormous Nile crocodiles basking in the sun, pods of hippos trundling out of

A ride in a tiny Cessna took us farther west, to the virtually unvisited Liuwa Plains National Park, which occupies part of an ancient kingdom, Barotseland, near the Angolan border in the upper Zambezi floodplains. Once the hunting grounds of the Lozi kings, the area has been protected since the late 1800s. Like some uncharted Eden, it remains extremely isolated, difficult to get around, and low on infrastructure. And during the rainy season, the park’s extensive wetlands fill to flooding, turning roads to mud while attracting enormous inbound migrations of

water-loving birds. We saw masses of storks, cranes, slaty egrets, and whiskered terns, and when not navigating the muddied tracks, our guide pointed out red-billed teals, woodland kingfishers, whitebellied bustards, secretary birds, sooty chats, pink-throated longclaws, and flocks of blackwinged pratincoles, all the way from Europe and Asia. It certainly helps to have wings if you’re here during the rainy season – we frequently held our breaths as we narrowly avoided getting stuck in roads consumed by puddles. But it was worth braving the mud to witness the world’s second-biggest wildebeest migration. As water levels rise, the park fills up with beasts skipping in from Angola. Apart from the blue wildebeest arriving en masse, there were zebras and tsessebe, and we saw tiny oribi, herds of Lichtenstein's hartebeest, red lechwe, little duikers, and roan antelope. And, of course, predators were having a field day picking off the weak and injured stragglers. Hyenas, wild dogs and lions seemed to make a game of taking turns to hunt, their over-stuffed bellies sagging, their self-satisfied faces permanently drenched in blood. Aside from this profusion of animals, it was wonderful being here for the sheer drama of Liuwa’s skies, thick with bulging clouds and surging with the energy of storms that seemed always on the verge of breaking. And each time they did, it felt like a miracle of creation.

Sit up straight, put on a tie, choose your company well and talk a little posher!” explains Ian Millar, Global Brand Ambassador for Glenfiddich. With the recently released Glenfiddich Excellence 26 Year Old available in South Africa this month, we have a feeling a lot more suits and ties will be donned around the country. Glenfiddich’s decision to add a 26 year old whisky to their line-up finds its inspiration not only in this family owned company’s pride in sharing its exceptional whiskies with whisky lovers around the world, but also thanks to a little competitive rivalry. “We did have a 30 year old in the market, but nobody else did, so it seemed like a bit of a waste,” explains Ian. “We had the opportunity because we had the whisky, and because we had the whisky it seemed only appropriate to start looking at why we’ve got a 30 and why we don’t operate at a 25. So we refocused and now we have a 25 year old in duty free and a 26 year old in domestic markets. This means that we can now take on our competitors at

“American White oak is grown in flatter lands than Spanish oak, and is exposed to more extreme temperatures. It has less tannins – so less of that peppery bite – and it's very sweet because it has lignin, and when you char the casks that lignin breaks down and creates vanillin, which gives you that toffee, vanilla, caramel sweetness,” explains Ian. “American oak is good because it better showcases the naked flavour of an individual distillery. European oak, because it is previously used for sherry, can tend to overwhelm the flavour of the whisky, as 65 % of the flavour comes from the oak that the whisky is matured in.” The result is a whisky with a light, but beautifully intense flavour. It boasts a delicate floral nose with hints of spice and vanilla sweetness on the palate. “The 25 Year Old has been matured in a combination of European and American oak, but with the 26 Year Old we wanted to create something completely
different. After 26 years exclusively in American oak it has a lovely grapefruit citrus, grassy flavour on the palate, without the peppery bite of European oak. It’s light, it’s delicate and it’s delightful,” says Ian. It also looks the part, as it is packaged in an opulent purple presentation box and finished off with an oak stopper reminiscent of the bourbon casks in which it was matured. While the 26 Year Old is certainly at the pinnacle of whisky sophistication, Ian maintains that whisky lovers are guaranteed of a special experience whatever bottle of Glenfiddich they choose to sample. “Anything that has the Glenfiddich name on it will come with an expected reliability,” he says. “So if you open any bottle of Glenfiddich, it doesn’t matter what expression it is, you know that you’re going to get something good.” Likewise, any bottle of Glenfiddich comes with a distinct sense of status which comes from the renewed emergence of a strong whisky culture around the world, as well as an appreciation of single malts. “If you stand at the corner bar with a big, chunky glass of whisky, you’re making a statement. If you stand at the corner bar with a fluted glass with shrubbery and umbrellas hanging out of it, you’re also making a statement!” says Ian. “Status comes from what you choose as you walk towards the bar. I would be happy to order my whisky on the way to the bar – ‘I’ll have a Glenfiddich, 15 please’ – and I don’t care who hears me because I am proud to ask for that. Whereas if I want a vodka, I may wait until I am at the bar and then whisper it to the bartender and ask him to make it look like a whisky!” So the next time you’re out on the town and wanting to impress those around you, don your best outfit, stand up a little straighter, and say in your poshest accent: “I’ll have a Gelnfiddich 26, please”.

Here you can expect to find everything from oysters and wild mushrooms to locally brewed beer from the Darling Brewery. Your West Coast road trip should also include a visit to the towns of Darling (home of well-known political satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys and his theatre, Evita se Perron); Yzerfontein; Langebaan (an internationally acclaimed Ramsar site); Saldanha, which is a hot spot for water sport lovers; Jacobsbaai (known as the “Namaqualand by the sea”); Paternoster and the Cape Columbine Reserve; Shelley Point with its golf course and wellness centre; St Helena Bay with its unspoilt coastline and magnificent views; and historic Hopefield with its birdlife and hiking trails.

Guest areas have been opened up, lowered, and brought closer to the river, allowing for full engagement with the magnificent setting beneath the ebony and weeping boer bean trees. Characterised by handcrafted design with the integrity of authentic African provenance,

the lodge merges seamlessly with the shifting light, shapes and moods of the environment, providing a soothing sanctuary for world-weary travellers craving a connection with nature. Dramatic sculptural shapes, abstract art, and carefully curated collections of crystals, seed pods, bones and other found objects articulate a deep connection with the wild. There is a sense that everything has been derived from the earth. Rustic and worn, woven and carved, furnishings include iconic pieces fashioned from fossilised tree stumps, slabs of solid stone, artisanal wrought iron and leather, with each element designed to reveal its intrinsic beauty. hen Robin Renwick was appointed British ambassador to South Africa in 1987, he formed a deep friendship with Helen Suzman. 01 Health sunburn is a potential health hazard
S
ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. CARS
Most of the main car rental companies have outlets at the international airports and in major centres. In South Africa, we drive on the left side of the road. The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. A NOTE FOR SMOKERS South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
