The wildebeest migration comes through the Masai Mara between July and October. This is when thousands of animals arrive en-masse and there's a better chance of seeing river crossings, but bear in mind that the Mara has excellent game all year round so you can also visit between December and late March or in June and still be happy as Larry. For other wildlife areas in northern Kenya, such as Samburu, Meru or Laikipia, the rains don't spoil your safari, but may make it more of an adventure to find wildlife. The

best times to visit for great game are the cooler dry season between July and October and the hotter dry season of December to March. Our July/August issues features a number of properties from the East African Region, mainly Kenya and Tanzania. Our focus is on the luxury Tent Camps in the Massai Mara and Samburu area, where the wildebeest migration will be taking place. We hope you enjoy our compilation of destinations. The 2007 Samsara Syrah is an elegant wine which focuses on refined flavours that develop over time. The Camp, running alongside the banks of the Sand River, has 16-tented rooms inclusive of a 2-bedroom family suite. These tented rooms are divided into two distinct accommodation areas. The first of these accommodation areas hosts’ 10-tented bedrooms that are serviced by a large tented dining room, and reception area. The second accommodation area, a short walking distance from the first, comprises of 6-tented bedrooms also serviced by a tented dining room. It may therefore be possible for small or large groups to be accommodated ‘privately’ within their own distinct camping area, whilst enjoying their own private dining tent. This option is dependant on group numbers and the availability of rooms. The Camp can provide twin and double-bedded configurations in each of the tented accommodations. THE MAASAI PEOPLE OF KENYA WHO ARE THE MAASAI? WHERE DID THEY COME FROM? WHAT IS THEIR MODERN CONSERVATION ROLE?

he Northern and Southern Maa speakers of East Africa have been the pre-eminent cattle keepers in terms of wealth, land control, and influence in both Kenya and Tanzania for a very long time. At the height of their ascendancy in the mid 18th century the range lands that they “owned” included the Great Rift Valley and fertile volcanic lands on either side over an area of more than 350,000 km sq. ( 60% of the land mass of modern Kenya). Prior to ‘Emutai’, the decade of disaster between 1893 and 1903 that probably killed 60% of the pre-disaster population of Maasai (because in the first few years it killed over 95% of the cattle that they depended upon for their daily milk), the population of Maasai that controlled this vast area was likely

Cattle keepers in Africa had fully specialized pastoral cultures along the Upper Nile in Egypt and Sudan for more than 6000 years at a time when the savannahs in what is now the Sahara had just begun their trend towards extreme desiccation. The greatest survival tool and adaptation of all cattle keeping people is the high mobility of the human population and the cattle on which they depend. While they might lay claim to and defend rangelands with great ferocity against non allied pastoralists, successful pastoral people must also be masters at keeping the peace that their livestock needs to grow and prosper.

It is incredible that even with well-organized standing armies of bachelor warriors the Maasai could have owned and controlled such a huge area of diverse terrain with only one fifth of a person per square kilometer. In the north they were close neighbours of pastoral Dasenech, Turkana, Gabbra, Rendille, Boran, and Pokot who were all confined to less productive rangelands on the periphery of the northern Maasai (Samburu and Chamus). The southern Maasai occupied a long broad tongue of semi arid land bounded by sixteen agricultural peoples: the Meru, Embu, Kikuyu, Kama, Taita, Usambaa, Parakuyo, Larush, Iraqw, Tatoga, Kuria, Gusii, Luo, Kipsignis, Nandi, Maraquet and Elgeyo. The Maasai are the southernmost Nilotic speakers of Africa and their homeland includes the range lands of the Boma Plateau bounded in the south by the waters of the Sobat River which flows from the Ethiopian Highlands into the White Nile and the Sudd just south of Malakal. Modern genetics and traditional linguistics show information and genetic exchanges with their Afroasiatic (Cushitic) neighbours to the north and east over the past 3000 years. And yet authoritative treatments of Maasai history do not penetrate beyond the last 20 to 23 remembered fourteen-year age sets. The oldest remembered north Maasai age set of warriors was probably initiated about 1690, but these Lkasurutia men (“ of the brass coils”) inherited the way they thought, acted, spoke, and prayed from people who walked the mountains of Sinai and the shores of the River Nkishon which flows into Galilee. The Maasai are named as being amongst the Hebrew priests in Chronicles and the Samburu are called the Korr, or Kore, and are listed in following verses of the same Bible Chapter as singers and gatekeepers. At times of great challenge modern Maasai pray ‘Nkai ai Oi Pasinai’ = my god given at Sinai.

The desertification of the vast Saharan ranges along the length of the Nile has pushed the ancient cattle keepers south into both Ethiopia and the southern Sudan as well as into northern Uganda and Kenya. We know from scenes on the dynastic carvings of ancient Egyptian monuments that cattle keepers of southern Sudan were amongst those people whose involuntary labour was used to move and work these monumental stones. The Maasai do not recall just

when they left their Nilotic homeland in the Sudan. This suggests that their exodus was not a single event but a very long process of north to south movement that took place over more than 2000 years. They do remember when they left the hot floor of the Kenyan Rift Valley and followed the Kerio River southwest until it guided them onto the well watered range lands just east of Mt. Elgon. Once they arrived into the Kenyan Highlands where they

pushed aside other pastoralists, they also cultivated long lasting exchange relationships with neighouring agricultural people. This rescued them to a great extent from the periodic famines that are such a very great challenge to cattle keepers without reliable agricultural neighbours. Although three Modern Maasai sub groups, the Chamus, Larush and the Parakuo became sedentary agriculturalists around Baringo, on Mondule Mountain and on the southern

Kennedy, and many more icons of the past. None seemed appropriate for the father of our democracy. Paying tribute would need to be bigger than a courtyard statue, and bigger than a fountain, and bigger than an avenue of poplars down which you could stroll to leave a bunch of flowers. Straw realised from the outset that the garden needed to be as magnificent as the man himself, yet at the same time, it needed to respect the land and the community of Qunu. Straw worked closely with the Mandela family in Qunu for six years to create the memorial garden and final resting place. He recalls sharing lunches and teas with Madiba as they explored how he wanted the remembrance garden to benefit the community around his homestead in Qunu and draw the people of South Africa to his childhood home. “So the remembrance garden became a walk through his life. It’s a journey. Those who come to pay their respects can learn about and remember who Madiba was and what he achieved for South Africa,” Straw describes. “This garden is not about his death, it is about his entire life. “It allows visitors to consider

He describes how they were dotted with large, smooth rocks that he and his friends transformed into their own roller-coaster: “We sat on flat stones and slid down the face of the large rocks. We did this until our backsides were so sore we could hardly sit down.” It was here that Mandela wanted to be laid to rest when the time came. The Mandela family heeded his wish and called on South Africa’s greatest and most talented landscape architects to tender their designs for the memorial garden. The mandate was to encapsulate that entire Madiba means as an icon, a leader and a legend to our country and the world. Landscape architect Gre Straw, owner of Earth Outdoor Living, flew to Qunu and walked the land surrounding the Mandela farmstead as he drew inspiration. Straw recalls the experience: “The Mandela family initially approached me to build a memorial garden on the farm. It was unbeknown to me that the garden was going to serve as Madiba’s final resting place. Journalists tried to bribe my staff and people broke into my on-site office looking for images or clues. It was a huge responsibility to the family.â&#x20AC;? The garden has yet to be competed and will likely open to the public over the next couple of years. In the meantime, as we remember Madibaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing and celebrate his life and the legend he leaves behind, the remembrance garden will encourage us to remember that Nelson Mandela was once a simple rural boy, a family man, a father, grandfather and husband. He was a revolutionary. A man who fought courageously for equal rights. A man who became the first president of democratic South Africa when the world believed it would fall to civil war. nerves don’t fail you! Slowly we start walking. Lazarus and Mesag lead up front and Nicholas is at the rear of us three rhino watchers. We clamber across more boulder rocks up a low hill and down the other side, and there he is. Standing on the hillside opposite us, we see a black rhino in the shade of a Mopani tree. He’s perfectly relaxed and doesn’t seem to know we are there. We continue walking in single file, treading softly and silently so as not to alert the rhino that we are approaching. Beads of sweat drip down our faces in the heat of the day, even though we have only walked about a kilometre in total. We stop about 40 metres from the male black rhino, though it feels much closer somehow. It’s a completely different and very personal experience seeing a rhino from ground level than from the safety of a vehicle.

he early morning sun illuminates the table-top mountains of Damaraland, but the boulderstrewn valley floor, where we are driving, is still dark. It will take a while before the sun reaches us, but the two rhino trackers, Nicholas Naobeb and Lazarus Mbahee, are already scanning the ground for signs of disturbance. This area – favoured by rhino – is vast and rugged and rocky, so tracking in the normal way is not possible. In the Land Cruiser we hobble over red basalt boulders while the trackers keep their eyes glued to the ground. Then Lazarus mumbles from the rear of the vehicle and driver Mesag Saal stops the Land Cruiser to listen to him. “He thinks he knows the direction the rhino have gone,” says Mesag, pointing in a completely different direction from the one we were headed in. It’s now 09h30 and we have been driving over the valley floor for three hours. The sun is high and hot, and the air is still as we make slow progress over the boulders. Both of the trackers believe they are on the trail of a black rhino – though we can see no signs of any tracks. They’ve done this many times before, though, so we are confident they are on track, though it does appear they are looking for a toothpick in a chopstick factory. Another two hours pass before the trackers tell Mesag to drive just a few metres further and stop. They have spotted a black rhino, though nobody else can see it. From here on, we will go on foot, being careful to keep downwind from the rhino so that he doesn’t smell us coming. “Rhinos, as big as they are, can disappear into thin air if they hear or smell you coming,” says Mesag. “They may not see well, but their other senses are finely tuned.” Then he adds: “Always remember that if a rhino charges you, simply stand still and throw a rock in the opposite direction, and the rhino will follow the sound to where the rock landed.” It’s good advice, I’m sure, if your

Everyone watches silently, their eyes fixed on the magnificent animal. His forefathers have walked the earth for 50 million years, yet if the poaching of rhinos continues unabated, they will be extinct within the next ten years. Our generation would be responsible for wiping rhinos off the face of the earth, which is no claim to fame. We watch mesmerised for another 20 minutes. Every few minutes the rhino lifts his head to smell the air, but since we’re downwind he can’t detect us. We stand on the periphery of his comfort zone and ponder the majestic crea-

tion that he is: so ancient, so powerful – yet teetering on the edge of extinction. It’s inconceivable that one of the Big Five may no longer exist in just a few years’ time. Walking back to the vehicle, nobody talks. We are all savouring the experience, which is both rare and awe inspiring. Only on the slow drive back to the lodge does chatter begin again, and it’s all about rhinos. It took nine hours to cover just 74 km to find one black rhino and spend 20 minutes in his world. The experience, though, is unforgettable. A bucket list wildlife encounter – checked.

This is also why mountain biking, hiking, fishing, bird watching and paddling on the dam are equally enticing outdoor pursuits here – when not cheering on the polo players from the sidelines, glass of wine in hand. ithin this imaginary existence many of us will have climbed and played high up in the bows and branches and, for the lucky few, built a ‘palace’ in the sky. It is this nostalgic sparkle that is all too visible in the eyes of the ‘grown-ups’ who gaze upon Tarangire Treetops for the first time. Tarangire Treetops sits serenely on the border of the Tarangire National Park - Tanzania. As you arrive at the Lodge, you are immediately greeted by a blaze of colour and a host of smiles all of which belong to the local Maasai tribesmen who have become part of the enchanting story that is Tarangire Treetops. Tarangire National Park is the sixth largest national park in Tanzania. The name of the park originates from the Tarangire river that crosses through the park, being the only source of water for wild animals during dry seasons. During the dry season thousands of animals migrate to the Tarangire National Park from Manyara.

It lies a little distance to the south east of Lake Manyara and covers an area of approximately 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles.) The landscape and vegetation is incredibly diverse with a mix that is not found anywhere else in the northern safari circuit. The hilly landscape is dotted with vast numbers of Baobab trees, dense bush and high grasses. The park is famous for its huge number of elephants, baobab trees and tree climbing lions. Visitors to the park can expect to see any number of resident zebra and wildebeest in addition to the less common animals. Other common animals include waterbuck, giraffe, and olive baboons. Home to more than 550 species, the park is a haven for bird enthusiasts who can expect so see dozens of species even in the dry season. The swamps are the focus of the largest selection of breeding birds anywhere in the world. Yellow-collared Lovebirds are a common bird sighting in the trees along the Tarangire River. The park is also famous for the termite mounds that dot the landscape. Those that have been abandoned are often seen to be home to dwarf mongoose. During the rainy season, the seasonal visitors scatter over a 20,000 sq km (12,500 sq miles) range until they exhaust the green plains and the river calls once more. But Tarangireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mobs of elephant are easily encountered, wet or dry. The swamps, tinged green year round, are the focus for 550 bird varieties, the most breeding species in one habitat anywhere in the world. In the dry season the fierce sun sucks the moisture from the landscape, baking the earth a dusty red, the withered grass as brittle as straw. The Tarangire River has shrivelled to a shadow of its wet season self. But it is choked with wildlife. Thirsty nomads have wandered hundreds of parched kilometres knowing that here, always, there is water.

Herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry river bed for underground streams, while migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons. Disused termite mounds are often frequented by colonies of the endearing dwarf mongoose, and pairs of red-and-yellow barbet, which draw attention to themselves by their loud, clockwork-like duetting. CARS

Most of the main car rental companies have outlets at the international airports and in major centres. In South Africa, we drive on the left side of the road. The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. A NOTE FOR SMOKERS South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
