his month’s edition has been my favorite so far. I know we have only released a demo and one other commercial edition, but visiting and reviewing the amazing properties, destinations and attractions featured in our publication really does just keep getting better. I am writing this on my way to track some Cape Mountain Leopards at the five-star Bushmanskloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat in the Cederberg mountains. Last weekend I enjoyed doing nothing but eating gourmet food and sleeping in a luxury villa in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Aside from luxuriating in the
splendor of the Western Cape countryside, I have also had an eagle in my arms, a lemur on my head, a glass of South Africa’s top Sauvignon Blanc in my hand, Lucky Dube in my heart and a gripping tale of South African strength in my bag. Does this sound like the kind of month you’d enjoy? Have a browse through our in-depth editorial reviews, unique accommodation and services guide and useful directory to start planning your own dream getaway!

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat
I am writing this at a beautiful marble desk. It is a chilly day in the Western Cape’s Cederberg Mountains, but a heated carpet and crackling fireplace keep me nice and toasty. I see only fynbos-covered mountains outside. There is an iPod docking station on the desk, but I prefer to listen to the sounds of the healthy river and host of birds outside.

am looking forward to breakfast. Dinner last night was spectacular, even though my partner over-indulged on the rich prawns, pork and homemade ice-cream to such an extent that a mountain hike was in order this morning (I wonder how last night’s bold Asara wine is handling that). I, on the other hand, so enjoyed the impressive spread of sweet and savory offerings at the afternoon’s dam-side high tea that dinner saw me order a light but delicious mushroom gnocchi, spinach and ricotta quenelle dish and rooibos sorbet (quite understandably, rooibos is a key ingredient in almost everything here). All the fresh produce prepared in the restaurant is from the reserve’s own garden. I had picked some fynbos during the day and had the option of including it in my meal or spa treatment, but opted for the latter. My experience at the spa was other-worldly. The spa is situated right on the river, and after my honeybush scrub, shea balm massage and crystal steam room experience, I felt just like a rivermermaid (yes, those exist in my dreams).

I absolutely love the spa’s own B Africa body care range, with its native African plant extracts and eco-friendly production technologies. The scents of the products had me sitting under a mighty baobab tree, sipping on some organic rooibos and walking along the West Coast Atlantic shore all at once. Next time I visit the reserve (because if I have anything to do with it, there will be a next time), I would like to experience the full Spa Ultimate Wellness Day, with its morning reserve walk, crystal steam room session, foot ritual, body exfoliation, chakra balancing candle massage and specialized facial. This time round, though, there are too many other exciting things to do to spend the whole day at the spa. Yesterday’s game drive was so special for me, as we saw an adorable week-old Springbok calf, and I spotted my very first hare (yes, they are just as cute as in the pictures). A group of Bontebok decided to hang around the vehicle while we enjoyed sundowners in the wilderness. The colors of the sky, mountains and dams on the drive back to the lodge were so awe-inspiring that nobody was able to say a word until after our return. Later today we are going on another game drive, and hope to see the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra as well as the elusive caracal that was spotted by a guide last night. We enjoyed an informative yet accessible presentation on the Cape Mountain Leopard at the homestead last night, and early this morning we went out with researchers from the Cape Leopard Trust to view the leopard cameras and spend some time tracking Caracal. The Cape Leopard Trust is dedicated to the conservation of the Cape’s predator diversity, particularly the Cape Leopard (Panthera Pardus), as the flagship species of the area. Bushmans Kloof is the primary sponsor of the Trust’s GPS collaring and tracking project, which allows the researchers to determine the home range and behavior of the leopards in the area. The Trust aims to establish a harmonious relationship between the leopards and, in particular, the farmers of the area. Leopards are secretive and elusive, preferring rocky terrain with plenty of cover. Their natural prey includes the Rock Hyrax (Dassie) and small antelope such as the Klipspringer.

The solitude and splendor of Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat is really quite difficult to put into words. What I can say is that, although the bedtime story I found on my pillow last night was quite delightful, I didn’t really have to read it because I am right in the middle of my very own African fairytale. The rare majestic cats, with their distinctively retiring nature, pose practically no threat to man and, unless directly threatened, will not harm. After learning about the amazing four-legged inhabitants of the area, I was interested to find out more about the history of the people of the land. A browse through the reserve’s Bushman Heritage Site was fascinating, and I am looking forward to the rock art expedition that awaits us after breakfast. Although Bushmans Kloof places a strong emphasis on learning and conserving, the element of escapist fun is still largely present. I am struggling to choose between a wide range of activities including bird watching, archery, canoeing and swimming in the heated pool. I might just hang around in the

step out of the car and into a rainforest. Giant flying foxes hover (rather ominously) above me, a tiny rare blue duiker brushes past my ankles and a group of baby crocodiles the size of overweight lizards rest on a rock next to the river. I step out of the rainforest and into the African bush. A cheetah looks down at me from her treetop lookout while a white lion turns brown in the dust below. Two love-drunk otters sun themselves beside a nearby dam, with some red river hogs thrown into the mix just for fun. Three Bengal Tiger cubs frolic around as if they’ve always lived in Africa, scrambling over each other in a tug of war
involving one branch and many appendages. As one would expect, the neighboring area is a pygmy village boasting three pygmy hippos doing nothing much other than basking in their own glory. I take a detour around the next area, but I hear the snakes are quite something if you can brave them. All this sounds a little contrived, doesn’t it? Well yes, it is. Especially since I am not in a dreamscape but in the dusty little town of Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape. The venue is Cango Wildlife Ranch, and the inhabitants are spectacular. I must admit, though, that it has always been hard

for me to see animals in captivity without viewing the facility in question with skepticism at best and contempt at worst. My visit to Cango Wildlife was in fact accompanied by many doubts and a conservation student in tow. After subjecting the poor manager to a grueling interrogation about the purpose, conditions and effects of keeping the animals at the centre, I could rest assured that it really was okay for me to enjoy the company of the diversity of species in their large natural enclosures all around me. The goal of the Cango Wildlife Ranch is ‘to promote
and fund the conservation of endangered species through captive breeding, research and public awareness’. Established in 1977, the centre is internationally recognized as one of South Africa’s leading conservation through education (and breeding) facilities. They are the proud holders of the most prestigious standard of rating within the zoological park community of Africa. This rating is an accreditation standard set out by the African Association of Zoos and Aquaria (PAAZAB) to raise the operational standards of zoological facilities to a level of good practice that is

by those at Cango Wildlife. All the animals at the centre are also happily breeding which, in this day and age, is unfortunately a simple yet vital step in the conservation of many endangered species. Having just returned from the Western Cape Cheetah Conservation farm, I was also particularly interested in meeting the centre’s ambassador cats. Cango Wildlife Ranch is known to be one of the strongest cheetah breeding facilities in Africa. Their Cheetah Preservation Foundation also generates funds to aid the fight for this species throughout the country. The public can get involved through adoption, corporate and executive memberships, as well as by becoming a Wild Animal Volunteer at the centre. Although I can’t imagine anything more glorious than spending every waking moment with a cheetah by my side, a duiker at my ankles and a lemur on my head, my one visit to the centre was enough to leave me feeling duly warm and fuzzy, as well as motivated to further their conservation aims. held in high regard internationally. The centre’s good standing with the NSPCA (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is evidenced through their recently awarded certificates for good practice and excellent animal care. Cango Wildlife hosts, breeds and educates about a range of endangered animals, many for which the majority of visitors may never have spared a thought if they were not able to see (and in certain circumstances even interact with) them at the centre. I was particularly moved by three perfect little black and white fur balls made famous in a movie about some witty animals on an island not too far away. Cango Wildlife hosts three different lemur species in Lemur Falls, an impressive new R2 000 000 area that they have created to replicate the natural habitat of the ringtailed, black and white ruffed and brown lemurs. The goal of the centre is to use Lemur Falls as a platform from which to promote conservation of these adorable creatures. I can’t imagine that anyone would be able to shrug off the plight of all lemurs in Madagascar after having their ears nibbled and their fingers held

he esteemed Sommelier Michael Gabugas fitted perfectly into the fantasy until I ordered a lemonade and hot chocolate to drink. With a wine list the size of my thesis, I guess in retrospect his (tactfully controlled but evident) horror was understandable. I still don’t regret my decision, though, as it really was the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted (and I like to consider myself a connoisseur of the decadent drink). Then came the grub. After vehemently expressing my hatred of soup, I sheepishly ordered the incredible pea soup that my partner had forced me to taste. The concept of a starter-before-the-starter (Amuse Bouche, as they call it on the Titanic) was just too delightful to pass up. My partner enjoyed a prawn carpaccio starter and I finally ate my beetroot and goat’s cheese offering after taking about 21 photos of it. Although he was friendly and accommodating throughout, Swiss Chef Gorgosilish Roland must also have been a bit frustrated with me and my nothing-with-a-face-or-a-mother dining preference. Luckily my partner ordered a Chalmar beef fillet, and reminisced about it for the next three days. I certainly didn’t feel like I had missed out, though, as the trio of butternut I chose restored my faith in the evidently versatile vegetable. I must admit that dessert has always been my favorite course (and hot chocolate does not constitute dessert). The choice between the nougat milk tart and the caramelized chocolate mousse was one of the most stressful I have had to make this month. And then this fancy Swiss chef had to come and show off with his flambéed pancakes theatrically prepared at the table. The only way out was through (them all). By the time I had accomplished that feat, l could think of nothing better than to lounge over an opulent couch with my reading glasses on my nose, a newspaper on my lap and an after-dinner cigar between my fingers. Unfortunately I no longer wear spectacles, was in no mood to
read about life on ‘land’ and my nonsmoker’s cough would no doubt disturb the ambience, so I ordered another hot chocolate and sat down to read the history of Grande Roche, the five-star hotel that houses the restaurant. The Paarl farm on which the hotel was built harkens back to 1717, with a history filled with architectural developments, family successes and a few juicy crimes of passion thrown in the mix. I’d definitely rate the overall dining experience as one of my top three, and not just because the rest of South Africa has already made that official. For more information or to make a booking, visit www.granderoche.com.

tasting with a group of French sailors who evidently understood nothing except that the wine tasted good and that the seating in the opulent tasting room was more than suitable for another few hours’ stay. I really wanted to join the party, but was quickly whisked out the huge wooden doors and on a slightly mysterious but distractingly scenic drive. Twenty minutes later Duncan Savage (the winemaker in question) pulled over and alerted me to the reality that my next task was to hike up the mountain that stood its ground imposingly before the vehicle we were in.

For Duncan Savage, “wine is all about where it comes from. Not the dingy cellar or the retailer’s fluorescentlylit aisle, but the terroir. Welcome to Cape Point terroir.” I remember that it is for the wine that I have come to visit this exquisite piece of land. It is for the wine, too, that countless discerning customers and other guests venture out this way. Or is it for the guided nature walk, the romantic picnic area or the incredibly popular cheese boards? My private tasting a few hours later certainly confirms the former. Cape Point Vineyards pride themselves in being one
of South Africa’s leading Sauvignon Blanc producers. Here’s what I learn from Duncan when we finally sit down to enjoy the essence of the estate. The Cape Point Sauvignon Blanc 2011 showcases the classic Cape Point citrus in the form of grapefruit, lime and exotic tropical fruit. The palate is persistent with wonderful weight and intensity. It is perfect on opening but, as those who are familiar with Cape Point will know, will only improve over time. The Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2010 presents a rich, textured palate of grapefruit, stone fruit, lime and subtle

Two hours ago I drove out to the sleepy yet somehow fashionable town of Noordhoek, taking the journey over Boyes Drive at the leisurely pace that the pass demands. wood spice all held together by an incredible mineral backbone. It shows great structure and will develop incredibly well over the next five to ten years. The Cape Point Vineyards Isliedh 2010 is produced from two very select vineyard parcels, is ideal for enjoyment with great food and will be for many years to come. The palate is rich, seductive and exotic while still retaining the characteristic Cape Point mineral edge. The blend can be best enjoyed from mid-2012 over the next five and possibly even ten years. The estate’s 2010 Chardonnay shows a complex array of citrus, apricot, oatmeal, honey and spicy oak, which all follow to a wonderfully full palate with crisp acids and great length. The chardonnay is drinking beautifully at present, but will only improve over the next two to five years. The unusually named Splattered Toad Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are my personal favorites for little more reason than that they are dedicated to and help raise funds for the endangered Western Leopard Toads that populate the estate’s dams. Whether you’re into toad conservation, nature hikes, romantic picnics or simply good wine, I’d strongly recommend a visit to Cape Point Vineyards. outh Africa’s exceptional birds of prey seem to receive largely negative coverage in the media and pop-culture domains, with images of large raptors descending on domestic animals and stereotypes of circling vultures that function only to bring death and decay to mind. In reality, this is a species that is as much in need, as well as deserving, of the attention and protection that is afforded to the country’s more fondly regarded wildlife. This year, Ultimate Africa attended the 8th Annual Conference of the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Birds of Prey Programme. The goal of the programme is to combine all the efforts of individuals and organizations interested in raptor and vulture conservation in Southern Africa in an attempt to strengthen efforts as well as to identify (and fill) gaps in the conservation of birds of prey and their habitats. The programme is currently involved in 21 projects focused on diurnal and nocturnal raptors in Southern Africa. Their activities focus on monitoring and research of individual birds, habitat and climate change impact assessments, research into unnatural mortalities,

awareness and education, as well as legislation, policy and advocacy. Their current species or issue-specific action groups include the Cape Vulture Task Force, the Bearded Vulture Task Force, the Grass Owl Task Force and the Ground Hornbill Action Group. Their large-scale area-focused projects include the Lowveld Large Bird Project, the Kalahari Raptor Project, the Sasol Vulture Monitoring Project and the Migratory Kestrel Project. This meeting of passionate, like-minded people inspired Ultimate Africa to seek out the birds to which these individuals have dedicated their lives. Unfortunately, our closest encounter with members of this threatened species was to take place at the Eagle Encounters Bird of Prey Rehabilitation, Education and Eco-Tourism Centre on the pristine Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. Eagle Encounters offers interactive falconry flying shows as well as personal encounters with its variety of rescued birds. From woodlands owls that resemble their fluffy toy counterparts exactly, to majestic hunting eagles who just want to burrow their little heads under your arms, the centre has it all. So yes, it really is possible to cuddle an eagle. And once you have, you’re sure to join us at next year’s conference. Start your winged love affair by pushing the play button on this page.

ven though I was only born two years after this report was published, the shame of my forefathers will be with me always. Just last week I was delivering a presentation and was interjected by an elderly colored gentleman who berated me for knowing nothing about ‘the real South Africa’. As it turns out, the gentleman in question was captured and tortured by the apartheid police for three years, after which time he fled his home country to live a safer but solitary exile in Germany. Although he has now been back for many years, I can’t imagine the anger that he must still be carrying with him. Yes, things have changed and yes, we live in an incredibly beautiful country with so much to offer. But our difficult past will always make us who we are today – a diverse, complex society that still faces the challenges of lingering guilt, resentment, identity negotiation and racial divide on a daily basis. For millions of South Africans, not much has really changed. Although the legal system of apartheid is

you have probably never been a service delivery worker in Crossroads Township. Perhaps if somebody had just given them a platform from which to speak for themselves (and really listened to their grievances), the unfortunate incident would never have occurred. Emma Mashinini made sure her voice was heard by penning a raw and moving autobiography with chapter titles such as ‘Push Your Arse!’ and ‘Violent Times’. As was characteristic of all her endeavors, the writing of the book was a brave move considering the political climate of the time, and of course the book was not published in South Africa. It was in fact first published by The Women’s Press in London in 1989, and then by Routledge in New York in 1991. Ironically enough, I was only able to get my hands on a copy last month, when it was finally released in South Africa by Pan Macmillan. It’s no wonder the oppressive government of the past censored the book in its entirety. How would Emma have relayed in euphemistic terms how she was disrespected, exploited, imprisoned without charge and psychologically abused for most of her life? It is no doubt a hard one to read, but we can’t enjoy all that is wondrous in South Africa without paying some kind of tribute to its difficult past.

no longer in place, we are still living with its lingering hangover. Generations of people are still faced with the consequences of the oppression of the past, and certain individuals just can’t seem to shake its warped mentalities. This does not mean that we cannot celebrate all that is beautiful in South Africa today. On a fundamental level, your support of our country plays a vital role in creating sustainable livelihoods for many of the abovementioned people. It also means that you are willing to learn about the intricacies of South Africa today, meeting and listening to citizens from all walks of life. We cannot change the past, but we can learn, listen and support. Reading 1970s trade union leader Emma Mashinini’s autobiography has been an important process in my continued exploration of the history of the country I call my own. It is with shame that I admit that I did not know who she was prior to reading the book, as her story is certainly worthy of international recognition. Even today, trade unionists in South Africa have a reputation for ‘unrealistic’ demands and ‘unruly’ behavior. Just last week, three motor accidents occurred in the township of Crossroads because service delivery strikers had broken the traffic lights. There was a public outcry about the ‘irresponsible and reckless actions’ of the strikers, and of course it is regrettable that innocent motorists were affected by it. But if you’re reading this now,

Real Roots
Reggae Y ou don’t have to be a freedom fighter to enjoy the music of Lucky Dube. You also don’t have to be stoned, dreadlocked, or even South African. You just need to be in a good mood, really. And even if you’re not, you’re sure to get there soon enough. I really wanted to feature an iconic local musician in this month’s review. Although I know that Dube was South Africa’s biggest-selling reggae artist (recording 22 albums in Zulu, English and Afrikaans over a 25-year period), I was only certain that I had made the right decision one rainy afternoon in a quiet suburb of Cape Town. Delighted by the find, I started playing the album as soon as I received it, and have not really stopped since. On this particular day, I was watching the rain from behind the safety of my glass doors when three university students who had been running across the parking lot below stopped
dead in their tracks and started dancing and singing along right there in the pouring rain. I really had to join them (or forfeit my new status as the cool kid on the block), and suddenly we were the Rastas Who Never Die remembering that Education is the Key. None of us was really old enough to understand the full implications of the lyrics when songs such as these and the famous Prisoner resonated with all that our country once was and always wanted to be, but as the new generation of young adults we like to consider ourselves just as cool (and entitled to the music) as the real freedom fighters. We may not be Slaves or fighting the Taxman yet, but we are still young enough to do the Ding Ding Licky Licky Licky Bong…and so are you! After all, Dube himself (bless his soul) would have been 48 this year. Show your Love of the Nation and give the immortal roots reggae a listen by clicking the Play button.

t is 1989 and the struggle against apartheid has reached its peak. The film begins when 16-year-old Otelo Buthelezi, his younger brother Ntwe and his best friend New Year are invited to the beach house where their new friend’s mother is a domestic worker. The boys watch their friend Mandla Modise surf, and he takes the boys into a world that was previously completely unknown to them. The sunshine coast is worlds apart from the township where they live, which is plagued by political violence fuelled by the clashes of the Inkatha Freedom Front and the United Democratic Front comrades.
With practice, Otelo soon outshines his friend, Mandla, whose resentment builds even more when Dezi, New Year’s younger sister, falls for Otelo. As the boys begin to win competitions, Mandla’s jealousy grows and eventually he betrays his friend in the worst possible way. When Otelo discovers the truth, he has to make a choice between the money, glamour, girls and superstardom of international surfing and leaving it all behind to see to it that his idea of justice is served. On the day Nelson Mandela steps out of prison for the first
For the boys, who were previously deeply afraid of the sea, the feeling of “flying on water” that surfing affords them comes to represent the ultimate freedom. Soon everyone recognizes that Otelo is truly gifted on the water - a surfing star in the making. An older white man, Kurt Struely, approaches the boys, certain of their potential. He invites them to his home to watch some professional surfers on video, painting an enticing picture of the life they could live if they learn to master the waves.

Otelo Burning was the opening film for the 32nd Durban International Film Festival, and has been nominated for the Drama Award in this year’s One World Media Awards. It is directed by Sara Blecher and is in Zulu with English subtitles. It stars Jafta Mamabolo (Generations), Thomas Gumede (A Place Called Home) and Tshepang Mohlomi (Izulu Lami). A Note for Smokers South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
Services Guide
• Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids.
