here are few things more romantic than travelling together. Sure, you get the awkwardly distributed bites and rashes, cabin claustrophobia and jet lag moods, but none of that seems to dampen the exhilaration of exploring new and exotic places and experiences with someone who makes your knees weak. Luckily for us here in sunny South Africa, we don’t have to travel very far to encounter beauty and rediscover romance. My ideal Valentine’s retreat for 2013 would have to be Hout Bay, where I’d return to the exquisite and secluded Tarragon Guest Cottage that I visited with a friend last month. I can picture it now – retreating to our hideaway after watching the sunset on Llandudno Beach with a bottle of Hout Bay Vineyards’ delightful sauvignon blanc… While I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination, I can tell you that I would insist on a stop at the rejuvenating Constantia Uitsig Spa on the way home. If you do find yourself in the Cape but Hout Bay’s not really your thing (which I can’t imagine, but each to his own), a trip to the pristine Delaire Graff in the winelands would provide an equally romantic

getaway. The accommodation is luxurious, the spa indulgent and the cuisine other-worldly. If you’d prefer to stay in the magnificent city of Cape Town (now that I would understand), I’d highly recommend a night at the opulent yet relaxed Cape Grace Hotel, where dinner at Signal restaurant and a couples’ treatment at the spa are sure to be memorable. For the more adventurous couples, a diving/snorkeling/turtle-tracking/ general merrymaking trip to the elusive Maputaland could be a fun challenge. These are but a few options for lovers in the area. If you find yourself anywhere else in South Africa, we would recommend any destination with the Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa stamp of approval. Love each other, love others and love the land this Valentine’s Day.

Street Soirees

Stellenbosch

Summertime and the living is easy in Stellenbosch, where visitors and locals alike can now revel in the true pulse and pleasures of the vibrant oak-lined town during communal Street Soirees which take place on a bi-weekly basis until the end of March. These social soirees – presented by the Stellenbosch American Express® Wine Routes and Stellenbosch 360 – transform the lower part of Church Street into a colourful gourmet and grape hub, with complimentary wine tastings offered by various estates on South Africa’s oldest and foremost wine route. Adding taste to these balmy evenings, participating restaurants in and around Stellenbosch will sell some of their unique dishes right there on the street, while live music will get the vibes going and make you forget about your long day at the office. Each Stellenbosch Street Soiree features a different selection of cellars and caterers and entrance is free. Upcoming soiree dates are 3, 13 and 27 February as well as 13 and 27 March. The events take place from 17h00 until 19h30. For more information visit www.wineroute.co.za or the Stellenbosch Street Soirees Facebook page.

R es p o n s i b l e Din in g wit h St reet Sma rt Eating responsibly has just become easier with the release of the 2013 edition of the Rossouw’s Restaurants annual guide, which features six StreetSmart supporting eateries in the honours list and numerous others with excellent reviews. In Cape Town, Aubergine and Bizerca Bistro have achieved top honours, while in the winelands Three Stars were awarded to Jordan Restaurant, Rust en Vrede, The Tasting Room and Waterkloof Restaurant. A number of other StreetSmart participants are also very highly regarded in the guide, namely Buitenverwachting, Cargill’s, Catharina’s, Fork, Manna Epicure, Myoga, Savoy Cabbage, Glen Carlou, Makaron, Bread & Wine, Haute Cabrière, Reuben’s and Le Bon Vivant. StreetSmart raises funds for organisations that help street children through a voluntary R5 addition to the bill at participating restaurants. You can change the life of a child simply by dining at a participating restaurant – and as the Rossouw’s Restaurants gradings prove, StreetSmart participants are great places to eat too. onstantia Uitsig Spa offers a comprehensive range of treatments and therapies. It is the only spa in South Africa to offer Les Arômes du Vin, a body treatment based on the aromatic components of fine wines. The Les Arômes du Vin Signature Treatment includes a full body scrub, massage and lunch at an estate restaurant. The components of a bouquet of fine wines are blended and crushed with vine bark creating a scrub that exfoliates, renews and revitalizes. The body is then massaged with a blend of essential oils that resonate with the essence of Constantia Uitsig’s wine: relax or invigorate – you choose. Totally renewed, guests can stroll through the beautiful garden or lunch at one of the award-winning restaurants. Another unique range hosted at the spa is Kalahari Spa Ancient Desert Secrets. The Kalahari Spa Range was created after years of research by a team of experts, including botanists and scientists, who sourced naturally derived ingredients based in plant shrubs, derived plant oils, red sand, nourishing mud and rich mineral salts from the Kalahari Desert. With the Kalahari Spa Range came sincere responsibility towards the Khoi San people. Kalahari Spa has initiated a Kalahari Bead Project that involves the San community’s handcrafted ostrich egg beads, which are used in the making of traditional bracelets. The proceeds from the sales of the bracelets go towards the support of participating families in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. In conjunction with Kalahari Spa’s social commitment, it is sincerely respectful of the environment and uses only sustainable natural resources.

On arrival at The Tarragon we were met with nothing short of a familIal welcome. The cottages are self-catering, which makes perfect sense in a village famous for its beach restaurants and unrivalled fish and chips. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with everything from the linen to the bathroom soap appearing to have been placed with complete consideration of visitors’ comfort. The finishes are modern and natural, with an abundance of Cape sandstone, natural slate and light, airy living spaces. The living area of our cottage overlooked a large and beautifully maintained koi pond, and the sight of the brightly coloured fish combined with the sound of the gentle trickle of water gave us endless joy. There is a beautiful clean pool on the property, with loungers throughout the garden that offer the most spectacular views. There is also a separate barbecue area even though most of the cottages have spacious patios. Each cottage boasts flatscreen televisions with satellite channel options. There is also WiFi and ADT security as well as a laundry and babysitting service. The kitchens are fully equipped and the bathrooms impeccable. Each cottage is serviced everyday from Monday to Saturday. If you’re looking for a tranquil nature escape but don’t want to venture too far from the city, we would highly recommend The Tarragon as your first port of call. For further information or reservations, call +27 21 791 4155 or visit www.thetarragon.com.

o be in Hout Bay is to be surrounded by mountains, beach and nature at its most authentic. Even though it is only a few minutes away from the city, it feels secluded from the buzz and offers wonderful opportunities for rest and recreation. The Hout Bay Market is famous for its food, crafts and

collector’s items and nearby Llandudno Beach is known for its breathtaking sunsets. One of the most important aspects of a holiday for many is privacy, and very often big luxury franchise hotel chains fail to offer this. An out-of-the-way oasis comprising several secluded cottages surrounded by pristine garden and unrivalled mountain and valley vistas, The Tarragon is one of the few places so near to the city that offers true privacy and serenity.

out to the reef just metres off the shore, or to Lala Neck, which at high tide forms a calm lagoon perfect for children just getting the hang of their masks and snorkels. The dive centre also offers “Ocean Experiences”. This is an exciting aquatic version of a traditional game drive. After an adrenaline inducing launch through the surf, there is every possibility of encountering huge pods of dolphins (and swimming with them), spotting humpback and Southern Right whales in season, snorkelling with manta rays and turtles, or even getting in the water with one of the behemoths of the sea, the whale shark. However, to truly see why this area is such an aquatic paradise, you really need to get suited up, strap on a tank and head under the waves. Here divers will find Africa’s southernmost coral reefs: unique underwater habitats covered in corals of huge variety and often startling colours, as are the creatures that call these reefs home. Multicoloured parrot fish, elegant Moorish idols, Blue sturgeon and Butterfly fish all vie for your attention with their techno-coloured liveries, while further up the food chain, giant Kingfish hide in dark overhangs just waiting for a tasty morsel to swim by, ribbon tailed rays snooze on the sandy sea bed, and black reef tip sharks patrol the area with their characteristic s-shaped undulating movements. A good dive master (and Mokarran boasts some of the most experienced in the country) can also point out the reef’s tinier inhabitants and often overlooked features, which can make the difference between a good dive and a great one. Even experienced divers will be fascinated to see how the orange spotted black hoods of the egg shell cowry can be tickled apart to reveal a treasure of a glimmering white egg within; or how a wiggling finger in a seemingly empty sandy pothole can reveal a flapping little electric ray hidden under the sand. Sharks and sport fish may be impressive due to their size, but it’s being shown the tiny

t is a wild wonderland of forested dunes, wetlands and lush woodlands teeming with birds, as well as stretches of the most unspoilt and pristine coastline anywhere in the world. As part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a recognised World Heritage Site, this stretch of coastline is one of South Africa’s greatest treasures. Yet – thanks to its secluded location – it remains largely untouched by the tourism bug.

A Home Away from Home

As a result, Rocktail Beach Camp (one of only two lodges in the area) is a decidedly laid back and unpretentious place to call home while exploring this ecological gem of a destination. Lodgings are in the form of tented rooms – admittedly with canvas sides and mesh net for windows, but decidedly comfortable nonetheless, right down to the open air ablutions with spectacular views of the distant sea across an expanse of virgin forest. Wooden decks also make the most of the elevated view, but for most people the camp is a mere watering and resting point in between all the ecological adventuring the area promises. Numerous trails crisscross the cool lushness of the surrounding Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve, where walkers are often rewarded with a sighting of a reedbuck or a shy duiker while being serenaded by flocks of indigenous birds, from Purple Crested louries and Grey Waxbills to Green coucals. As the forest gives way to giant sand dunes, you tumble out onto a wide swath of beach. It is undoubtedly one of the few in Natal where you can literally walk for kilometres in any direction and not see a single other soul, save for the odd ghost crab dicing with the surf.

A Watery Wonderland

It is a misleading sense of isolation, however, because the waters of the adjacent Maputaland Marine Reserve are quite literally bursting with life. Mokarran Dive Charters – affiliated to Rocktail – offers guided snorkelling trips

all over again. And that’s just what many of the visitors to this wild, untouched stretch of Zululand coast will feel too after their first experience of its unrivalled beauty and amazing wildlife – an unknown and ever present urge to find their way back here.

details – a delicate paper fish “blowing” backwards and forwards in the current, or being shown where to hold your hand under a rock and watching, fascinated, as an entire retinue of tiny cleaner shrimp come out to give you a thorough going over like an underwater carwash – that truly demonstrates the wonder of this particular dive site.

Turtle Time

Between November and March, this stretch of coastline is turtle central, as Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles migrate back to their hatching grounds to play their part in creating the next generation. As a result, it is not unheard of to spend a dive literally tripping over these endearing dinosaurs of the sea, from watching a Loggerhead turtle having a siesta under a rock and a Hawksbill foraging for food, to looking up to see the silhouette of a little Green turtle perfectly outlined as it swims sedately to the surface for a breath of fresh air. While these incredible creatures are most graceful and captivating in their own watery habitat, it is an otherworldly experience to witness one of these animals heave themselves tirelessly up the sand dunes and then complete the exhausting ritual of laboriously carving their nests out of the soft sand, laying their eggs, covering over their clutch, and then heaving their heavy and weary bodies back to the ocean. This is one of the few places in the world where humans can watch this prehistoric pantomime unfold. It is thrilling to drive along the deserted beach, with only the moonlight and the faint beams of an open-top Land Rover to help you scan the soft sand for the telltale shuffling tracks that show that a Loggerhead or – a much greater prize – a giant Leatherback turtle has come ashore. Often there are two parallel sets of tracks, indicating that the show is already long over. But if you are lucky, you might catch one “in the act”, so to speak, and it truly is an emotional and moving experience which is hard to capture fully in words. Rocktail’s turtle tracking vehicle, as well as one from neighbouring Thonga Beach Lodge, are the only private vehicles allowed on this stretch of beach. As well as sharing this magical experience with a restricted number of guests, the guides also measure and tag every turtle encountered, thereby aiding Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife with their turtle conservation project, which is one of the longest running and most successful turtle protection programmes on the planet. The turtles pepper the beach with their nests from November to February every year. Thereafter, the pantomime continues until March or early April when the eggs hatch and visitors may be lucky enough to witness the next generation of little turtles making a headlong dash for the sea and all the dangers it holds for them. Only a tiny fraction of all the turtles that hatch on this spectacular stretch of coastline will live to maturity. But those that do, know by some deep instinctive urge, some unknown power of nature, to make their way back here to start the process

Signal Restaurant at the Cape Grace Hotel

Cape Town’s Cape Grace Hotel epitomizes both luxury and comfort. It is a place steeped in history, with displays of precious artefacts serving as a constant reminder of its antiquity and tradition.

The tasting menu at Signal really encompasses what the hotel stands for - the variety in the content of food and the different flavour profiles of each of the dishes present a smorgasbord of cultural and historical influences. I enjoyed the vegetarian tasting menu, which started with a smooth and flavourful Cape malay tomato soup that would be heavenly in winter. A sweet flavoured aubergine dish with a somewhat smokey sub-taste followed. A lentil dish saw me fully satiated even before the next few dishes, but luckily the burst of acidity chased with the sweet citrus of the palette cleanser enlivened my tastebuds once more. The a la carte menu is a pleasure to read in itself. The staff are exceptionally friendly and the atmosphere is lively. Diners should just be prepared to wait quite long between each course – a hiatus some may argue is necessary to fully apreciate each dish. Although the Cape Grace Hotel offers a truly memorable and authentic Cape experience, I would return in a heartbeat for the food alone.

T

he hotel is surrounded on three sides by water, making it feel like a grand old ship. Needless to say, there are few views that better represent the charisma of Cape Town and its history. Something I found particularly admirable about the hotel is their patronage of South African artists. Many of their tapestrys are beautifully hand painted in the theme of the voyagers who first discovered the glory of the Cape. The story of Signal Restaurant is an interesting one. As the name suggests, there is a view of Signal Hill but there is more to it than that. In the early days of the Cape, men would wait for the signal from the mountain to let them know that the fresh produce had arrived from Europe or the East. Signal Restaurant prides itself in a similar ‘trade’ of fresh, exotic tastes. The restaurant is luxuriously appointed, with dramatic chandeliers and bold wall paintings. Although it offers fine dining at its best , it is by no means pretentious.

stablished in 2001 by Cathy and Peter Roeloffze, the family-owned boutique winery produces a range of artisanal wines that reflect the unique terroir and picturesque setting in which the grapes are grown. Every part of the process, from viticulture through viniculture and right up to label application, is done by hand to ensure that each bottle embodies the love and care that goes into its creation. Cathy and Peter’s love for ‘Champagne’ ensures that each bottle is carefully nurtured to produce the lasting quality true of the strictest French Tradition. Handpicked Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes from vines planted in the Swiss style of ‘one vine per pole’ guarantee that only the best product is used for their top-quality Cap Classique. Although bubbly started the adventure, Hout Bay Vineyards also produces a range of full-bodied reds, a Sauvignon Blanc characteristic of the Cape Peninsula and a delicately light ‘blush’ rosé. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes are lovingly cared for on the slopes of Hout Bay, where the cold Atlantic Ocean brings its favourable cool breeze. The red grapes are carefully selected by Peter,

depending on where his fancy carries him for that vintage. Previously he chose a Cabernet and a Merlot. In recent years he has been leaning towards the cultivars of the Southern Rhone region, and has been harvesting Cinsaut, Carignan, Grenache Noir, Mouvedre and Shiraz. 2010 saw the first production of the vineyard’s Black Swan port. It is made from traditional Portuguese grape varietals, namely Tinta Roriz and Tinta Barocca, Souzou, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesca. Initially a Late Bottle Vintage (LBV) will be released and thereafter aged tawnys in stages of ten, fifteen and twenty years. Hout Bay Vineyards aims to produce a barrel of port, also known as a ‘pipe’, every year from now onwards. Each vintage brings with it new and exciting happenings in the cellar of Hout Bay Vineyards. Their increasingly popular open days are held every last Saturday of May and November, when patrons stock up on reds for those stormy Cape winters and crisp white wines and bubbly for the festive season. Peter and Cathy welcome anybody who would like to arrange a wine tasting, cellar or vineyard tour. Visit www.houtbayvineyards.co.za or call +27 83 790 2372 for more details.

South Africa S

A Fair Trade Destination

outh Africa is the world’s first fair trade tourism destination. This is thanks to Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa, which is ensuring that tourism products in the country are following fair trade principles. What is Fair Trade Tourism? Fair Trade tourism ensures good wages and working conditions for staff, a fair share of the tourism revenue to local communities and respect for human rights, culture and the environment. In other words: tourism that is good for people and the environment. How does it work? Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) is a local non-profit organisation that certifies tourism businesses (hotels, activities and attractions) against a set of standards linked to global Fair Trade criteria. These include fair wages and working conditions, fair purchasing, fair operations, equitable distribution of benefits and respect for human rights, culture and environment. An assessor spends between one and three days on-site (depending on the size of the business) to verify the criteria. This audit is repeated every 24 months to ensure that standards are kept high. Businesses that qualify get to carry the FTTSA logo. By selecting an FTTSA-certified establishment, you are assured that your travel benefits small business owners, tourism employees and local communities and economies, and that the business is operated ethically and in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. What kinds of places are Fair Trade? Any kind of tourism business can become FTTSAcertified: from backpackers to 5-star lodges; township tours and whale watching cruises to adrenalin-filled activities and botanical gardens. There are currently close to 70 tourism businesses across South Africa certified by FTTSA. In addition to being fab holiday places and activities, they all do a lot of amazing things for people and the environment. You can read all about this on the FTTSA website (www. fairtourismsa.org.za). The Six Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa (FTTSA) Principles Fair Share: All participants involved in a tourism activity should get their fair share of the income, in direct proportion to their contribution to the activity. Democracy: All participants involved in a tourism activity should have the right and opportunity to participate in decisions that concern them.

Respect: Both host and visitor should have respect for human rights, culture and environment. This includes: • Safe working conditions and practices • Protection of young workers • Promoting gender equality • Understanding and tolerance of socio-cultural norms • Reducing consumption of water and energy as well as reducing, reusing and recycling waste • Conservation of biodiversity and natural resources • HIV/Aids awareness Reliability: The services delivered to tourists should be reliable and consistent. Basic safety and security for both host and visitor should be ensured. Transparency: Tourism businesses should establish mechanisms of accountability. This includes: • Ownership of tourism businesses must be clearly defined • Employees and other participants should be able to access information that concerns them • Sharing of profits, benefits and losses must be transparent Sustainability: The tourism businesses should strive to be sustainable. This includes: • Increased knowledge through capacity building • Improved use of available resources through networking and partnerships • Economic viability through responsible use of resources • Reduction of leakage through local purchasing and employment • Supporting of historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs 36

ecent research has found that North America has the highest body mass in the world. Published in the BMC Public Health online journal, the study by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine says that while the average global body mass is 62kg, North Americans have an average body mass of 80.7kg. The continent comprises only 6% of the world’s population, but has 34% of the world’s biomass, due to obesity. The study points out that in contrast, Asia has 61% of the world’s population, but only 13% of the world’s biomass, due to obesity. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, stroke and certain types of cancer, which are all preventable. And obesity can also be life-threatening. American world news website, Global Post, in a 22 November 2012 article stated that for the first time in human history, there are more obese people in the world than people who are hungry. In South Africa, we are no different. As the most developed country in sub-Saharan Africa, 61% of our adults are obese, according to research released in October 2012 by pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. Many reasons have been cited for this seemingly sudden spike of global obesity. Lead author of an October 2012 study published in The Lancet medical journal, Jenny Cresswell says global dietary changes like the consumption of high-fat and high-sugar foods, together with urbanisation and a more sedentary lifestyle are major contributing factors. Globally, people are being besieged by the weight loss industry which advocates high-protein, fat-free, food combining, calorie counting fads in regular rotation, often in glitzy Hollywood packaging like the South Beach Diet and the Zone Diet and fat loss gurus abound. But all the while, populations are just becoming fatter and fatter. A Johannesburg pharmacist believes she has discovered another answer. “Fat people don’t suffer from a lack of willpower; they are overweight because of biochemical imbalances in the brain which make them overeat, but they never feel full, or their bodies latch onto every calorie and store it as fat,” says Paula Galvão. Biochemicals include leptin, which regulates satiety and energy-burning, and insulin, which regulates blood sugar. Until biochemical imbalances are corrected, no diet will help, Galvão says. Imbalances have a number of causes – nutritional deficiency, genetics, stress and hormonal problems. “Our hormones become unbalanced as we get older. This explains why we get fatter as we age,” says Galvão. “In women the oestrogen to protesterone ratio is very important. High levels of stress cause progesterone to convert to oestrogen, causing fat accumulation on the hips and in the stomach area.”

Insulin-resistance is another contributing factor in our modern lives. It is a blood sugar disorder that causes carbohydrate cravings and increases fat storage and is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle. Most people who are overweight are insulin-resistant, Galvão explains. Having been overweight from childhood and reaching 113kg at the age of 25, she was desperate to find a solution to her weight problem. After studying pharmacy, as well as research spanning many years, Galvão launched the Eden Life Wellness Clinic in Johannesburg where her weight Loss programme does not advocate carbohydrates, except in small portions, or a fatfree diet. Instead it encourages a moderately high protein intake and a low-fat way of eating because certain good fats are essential. She is living proof of the success of her programme, having shed 50kg. Her clientele includes people from all walks of life, all ages, all sizes, including a number of celebrities like the legendary South South African actor, Robert Whitehead best known for his role as Barker Haines in the SABC3 soapie Isidingo in a weigh-in with Paula Galvao African singer PJ

Powers who lost 14.5kg and 54cm. Galvão is often the last resort for people before surgery like liposuction and tummy tucks. The clinic has even acquired some international clients, who have heard of Galvão ground-breaking philosophy about biochemicals and seen the testimonials on her website. “It’s really easy with technology these days,” she explains. “Me and my team of qualified weight management professionals have 30-minute Skype consultations with clients every two weeks or more, if they require, wherein we cover their measurements and current weight. We review their progress and adjust their eating plans.” Galvão and the team also coach clients, and the Skype sessions include cognitive restructuring, a set of techniques to become more aware of your thoughts and modify them when they are distorted, neurolinguistic programming, which helps you to let go of limiting beliefs and past baggage, as well as behaviour modification techniques. “We talk clients through the programme and encourage them when they are struggling,” she says. Skype enables the Eden Life team to see how people are losing weight, watch them on the scale in full view of the camera, how they measure themselves with the measuring tape and see how they are holding up. It’s the next best thing to an actual consultation. “At the end, a patient is so motivated to succeed, there is no way they will miss their next Skype appointment!” says Galvão. ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
