Happiness is like a kiss. You must share it to enjoy it. – Bernard Meltzer

O

n 21 March, South Africa will celebrate Human Rights Day in remembrance of the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre, in which 69 black demonstrators in the township of Sharpeville were killed by apartheid police. I realise that this may seem like a strange sentiment with which to preface a publication that covers luxury travel opportunities. The history and politics of the day will no doubt be explored in the South African media throughout the month, at once dampening and strengthening public morale. It is not my aim (in this instance) to try to make amendments for the past or to examine how far we have come since then (although the book we review this month aims to do just that). It is also not my aim to justify the publication of a luxury travel magazine in a country in which poverty and hardship are rife. I wish only to put forward my view that, by nature, physically and spiritually complete human beings seem to be more adept at opening up to and

assisting with the needs of others. Happy humans make happy humans. Our country needs people like you – people who love to travel, to see, to explore. Yes, your financial support is crucial to our economy, but we also need you to come, in person, with open eyes and open hearts and to get to know both the beauty and the hardships of our country. Whether your spirit lifts at the sight of a newborn rhino or at the prospect of getting lost in the wilderness of an open plain, we want you to carry that experience back with you into the less beautiful parts of South Africa, inspired by the realisation that every human being has the right to paint his or her reality with the experience of something beautiful. In sum, we want you to learn to love and cherish Africa and her people for better or for worse.

Reserve, Khutse Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve, Nxai Pan National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Northern Botswana is home to the great Okavango Delta – a travel destination so appreciated that the Botswana Tourism Organisation was awarded the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) 2010 Tourism for Tomorrow Award in the Destination Stewardship category for the Okavango Delta. The Okavango is shaped like a fan and is fed by the Okavango River – the third largest in southern Africa. The Okavango Delta is situated deep within the Kalahari Basin, and is often referred to as the ‘jewel’ of the Kalahari. This proposed World Heritage site is home to many animal species such as elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, red lechwe, waterbuck, reedbuck and many more. otswana’s bustling capital city Gaborone, which is also one of Africa’s fastest growing cities, offers travellers a wide range of activities including shopping, the National Museum and Art Gallery, the Three Chiefs Monument, Mokolodi Game Reserve, the Botanical Gardens, Gaborone Dam or the majestic Kgale Hill. Several significant tourist attractions can be found outside Gabarone and many visitors choose to take day trips to places such as Mokolodi Nature Reserve, the village of Kanye, Otse (to view or climb the Otse Hills), or Kanye, which has one of the most scenic routes in southern Botswana. A trip to eastern Botswana reveals the beauty of the Northern Tuli Game reserve, where the ancient Mapungubwe Hill boasts a rich variety of wildlife and a very intriguing history. In Old Palapye some of Botswana’s multicultural history can be uncovered when viewing artifacts from the Middle Stone Age, Late Stone Age and the Early Iron Age. It is also the site of the 19th century capital of the Bamangwato (led by Khama III). Also in Eastern Botswana, Moremi Gorge, which is situated deep within the Tswapong Hills, is the source of three permanent waterfalls. The northern and Kgalagadi/central regions in Botswana are arguably the most popular tourism regions in Botswana. The Kgalagadi defies stereotypical descriptions of a desert as it is rich in natural resources and wildlife. Covering 84% of Botswana’s land area, the Kgalagadi covers most of Botswana. One can visit the Central Kalahari Game

n the heart of South Africa’s Garden Route lie the rolling hills and abundant wildlife of the ultra-luxurious Gondwana Game Reserve. Set on 11,000 hectares of pristine wilderness area, Gondwana holds the distinction of being the only Fynbos reserve in the world with free-roaming Big Five game as well as endangered species such as the Cape Mountain Zebra, Black Rhinoceros and Black Harrier, among others. The Khoi San-inspired Kwena Huts with 180 degree views and sky lights for stargazing offer a truly spectacular accommodation experience. Privately situated two-, three- and four-bedroom bush villas are ideal for families or groups looking for more space and exclusivity. The villas can be staffed with a private field guide, chef and butler or rented on a luxury self-catering basis. Mouthwatering cuisine is prepared by the reserve’s international chefs. For an intimate and interactive dining experience, private in-suite dining with a personal chef is one of our specialities, as well as romantic bush picnics and evening meals in the reserve as the sun dies behind the mountains. Activities on offer at Gondwana include game drives, a junior ranger program for children, educational fynbos walks, birding with endemic species, mountain biking and more. The top-notch Spa offers facial, massage and grooming treatments that allow guests to wallow like hippos and emerge looking and feeling like African Queens. With names like Waterhole Plunge, Serengeti Scrub and Hakuna Matata Manicure, the Spa too reflects the genuine African ethos of Gondwana. Gondwana believes in the sustainable management of the environment for the conservation of indigenous flora and fauna. Located off the N2 highway about four hours outside of Cape Town, the reserve is easy to find and not too far off the beaten track.

Ed’s Note: Gondwana evidently embraces the spirit of Ubuntu, as staff members behave in a warm and welcoming manner, affording extra personal attention to those who require it. I suffered quite a severe episode of sun stroke, for example, and each member of staff, from management to ground staff, was at my beck and call with a smile even though they had warned me to slather on the sunscreen as they served us Amarula in the pool earlier during the day. A particularly great field guide to ask for is a gentleman by the name of Forget. He’s a great wildlife spotter and his picnics are as spontaneous and creative as his regular anecdotes. On another note – it’s worth waking up at 6am to look for the lions, and don’t be alarmed by a friendly elephant outside your hut! 24

Bossie Sikelela’ made us feel a little less guilty about all the indulgence (a portion of the proceeds of every tabouleh sold at GOLD is donated to the Darling Trust for work in the community). I have an unfortunate tendency of becoming quite grumpy when I can’t round off a good meal (no matter how substantial) with an even better dessert. Luckily there was a beautiful, moist Moroccan orange and almond cake with Amarula crème fraiche on hand to put a smile on my dial. Ever the health freak, my partner enjoyed a platter of fresh fruit, saying he wanted to eat the dessert that would likely be enjoyed by ‘a typical rural African’. I was afraid I might reach my word count relating my experience of the food alone. The overall experience at GOLD is also quite spectacular. With a marimba band, song-and-dance troupe, Mali puppet show and interactive drumming circle, the restaurant virtually doubles up as a live African music venue. That and a veritable art gallery, with traditional artifacts (including exquisite Ethiopian wedding rings and Fulani earrings from Mali) and hand-woven Kente cloths from Ghana and Senegal on display. GOLD offers a variety of dining options. The Timbuktu dining room seats 50 people, the Gallery dining room (which houses most of the art) seats 60 people and has its own service bar, the top roof garden seats 40 people, the Kenyan dining room seats 60 people and a separate function venue seats 90 people and sports a great cocktail bar. Not surprisingly, virtually every seat was filled that night. For more information or to book visit www.goldrestaurant.co.za.

he food at GOLD is, without a doubt, the best truly African cuisine I have tasted. What’s more, the chefs had no problem catering for my fussy vegetarian self - somehow managing to manifest delicious alternatives for each of the ten (yes, ten) courses without any prior notice. One of my favourite parts of any restaurant meal is admittedly the bread that is served before the starter. At GOLD I was introduced to the sweet magic of Xhosa pot bread. The fact that I still had nine courses ahead of me did not deter me from ordering a third portion of the baked delights (at which point the staff decided to stage a wellmeaning intervention). While I enjoyed the scrumptious rolls with a delicious mashed bean paste (apparently mashed beans can taste divine), my partner dipped them in a typically South African biltong dip. This all went down very well with the gold leaf-adorned sparkling wine that we were served on arrival. Our beautiful Ugandan waitress managed to pry me away from the pot bread with a spicy steamed vegetable roti and small crispy potato and garlic pastries traditionally enjoyed in Tunisia. Heaven, as I had always suspected, is evidently adorned with carbohydrates (in the best kind of way). My partner seemed to be in carnivorous heaven whilst feasting on a hearty South African pie and a Namibian venison pot. All of this was complemented by Zambian imfino patties (fried mielie meal and spinach) and Tanzanian mchicha wa’nazi (a really cool name for spinach with coconut and ground nuts). But wait…there’s more! A Malay lentil dahl and North African couscous dish saw us bursting at the seams but soldiering on in the name of good taste and fortune while a tabouleh recipe inspired by Evita Bezuidenhout’s ‘Evita’s

Called The Six Flowers, it forms part of the estate’s exclusive Short Story Collection range which includes two reds – The Owl Post Pinotage and The Caracal Bordeaux blend - in addition to The Maria, its much awarded noble late harvest wine named after Maria Marais, the feisty widow of Charles Marais who dominated life on Neethlingshof for almost 50 years in the early 1800s. Winemaker De Wet Viljoen said he wanted to extend the estate’s product line-up with a top-quality wooded white wine that would be complex and well balanced. Chenin blanc and Chardonnay dominate the blend with 30% each, followed by Sauvignon blanc (20%) and Viognier (10%). The wine has been rounded off with the addition of small quantities of Gewürztraminer and Weisser Riesling. “With this wine we also celebrate the completion of the comprehensive, scientifically based replanting of the entire estate which has been on the go for more than a decade. By choosing the correct location for each cultivar and by selecting the best clones for each, it has been possible to enhance the natural flavour and aroma of the grapes we harvest today. The improved quality of the grapes comes through very strongly in the new wine.” The grapes of the different cultivars were vinified separately and then matured for eight months in new French oak barrels before blending. The wine, which sells for about R80 per bottle, can be bought only on the estate and from the Vinoteque at present, but will be available nationwide in time. The flowers depicted on the label of The Six Flowers belong to the Hesperantha family. Widely dispersed in especially the indigenous Renosterveld vegetation of the Western Cape, they are also known as evening flowers.

T

he 2013 winner of the annual competition run by the Great Wine Capitals (GWC) once again came out narrowly ahead of Waterkloof Estate, Helderberg’s biodynamic winery situated on the slopes of the Schapenberg. The GWC, a network of the world’s leading wineproducing countries that shares international best practice to advance standards in wine tourism across the world, announced the results in Florence, Italy, at a gala dinner attended by leading wine tourism practitioners from around the world. GWC’s members, in addition to Cape Town-Cape Winelands, include Mainz-Rheinhessen (Germany), BilbaoRioja (Spain), Bordeaux (France), Florence (Italy), Mendoza (Argentina), Porto (Portugal), San Francisco-Napa (United States) and New Zealand’s Christchurch. Dating back 300 years, La Motte as South Africa’s national winner joins the illustrious company of some of the world’s most famous wine producers, including: • France’s Maison des Vins de Cadillac, a leading Bordeaux winery run from an 18th century manor house near the canton of Cadillac • Wasems Kloster Engelthal, a former Cistercian monastery in Rheinhessen, Germany, dating back eight centuries

• Quinta do Vallado Wine Hotel, one of the oldest estates in the Douro Valley of Portugal, run by the same family for almost 400 years • Spain’s Hotel-Bodega Finca de los Arandinos, close to Bilbao • Italy’s Fattoria Lavacchio run as an organic operation in Tuscany • Entre Cielos Luxury Wine Hotel & Spa in the foothills of the Andes Cordillera of Argentina • The organically farmed Long Meadow Ranch, nestled in the Mayacama Mountains of the Napa Valley, US • Renowned Yealands Estate in the Awatere Valley of Marlborough, New Zealand, a carbon-zero winery that has been one of the world leaders in sustainable farming. As the results of the top two South African contenders were so close, the local chapter of the GWC sought the opinion of the full international panel before making its final decision. La Motte’s win was based on its overall performance, taking first place in the Sustainable Wine Tourism category and second position in both the Arts and Culture and Wine Tourism Services categories. Last year the estate earned the top score in the Arts and Culture category. Waterkloof’s position as South Africa’s runner-up was

earned by coming first in the Architecture and Landscapes category, as it did last year, and by coming second this time in both the Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices and the Restaurant categories. André Morgenthal, spokesperson for the awards, said the virtual tie between La Motte and Waterkloof was a reflection of the extremely high standard of entries. “The difference between the scores was very slight. We had higher scores across virtually all categories compared with previous years. It is very encouraging to see that since the inception of the competition over a decade ago, there has been a steady advance in the quality and sophistication of wine tourism experiences entered for consideration.” This finding of the judges was borne out, he said, by the growing international vote of confidence amongst tourists in Cape Town and its surroundings. In November last year, Cape Town was named second-best city in the world and best city in Africa by readers of US-based travel publication Condé Nast Traveller. Its annual survey this year drew almost 50 000 readers and saw Cape Town beaten only by southern US city Charleston, but coming out ahead of Florence, Bangkok, Vancouver and Sydney. Morgenthal said this year, for the first time, the Hemel & Aarde area had been represented in the local GWC competition, with Creation taking top position in the Innovative Wine Tourism category. Other category winners were Grand Dédale of Wellington (Accommodation), Grande Provence of Franschhoek (Arts & Culture), Tokara of Stellenbosch (Restaurants) and Waterford of Stellenbosch (Wine Tourism Services). This year’s judges included wine tourism specialist Margi Biggs; international tourism consultant Rick Taylor of the Business Tourism Company, a former CEO of Cape Metropolitan Tourism and currently a board member

gets away with his occasional moral prescription and categorical accusation. Nonetheless, the essays are intelligent and well formulated. L

ove it or hate it, South African talk show host Eusebius McKaiser’s A Bantu in my Bathroom is one collection of essays you won’t forget in a hurry. As a straight, white, vegetarian female, I inhabit an identity that is worlds apart from that of the author. This alone makes me the perfect reader, as McKaiser’s aim seems to be to spark debate amongst South Africans of all crests and creeds. A fundamental thread of the collection revolves around the question of whether we are really able to negotiate our identities and support our beliefs and opinions within such a complex collective national consciousness. McKaiser argues that we are still unable to do this, and his essays offer challenges to our respective intellectual, moral and aesthetic high grounds. Although he takes full advantage of the platform to put forward his own (strong) opinions, McKaiser is saved by a disclaimer in which he cites sincerity as his only promise. The problem with the rest of us, he offers, is that we are in denial about the fact that racial (and sexual) identities are still very strong – we are still playing a ‘childish’ rainbow nation act that contradicts the way we behave in private. At least one essay in the collection is certain to get you a little hot under the collar, as a whole plethora of ‘touchy’ subjects (race, sexuality, culture, class…) is explored within the covers of the seemingly insubstantial paperback. Whatever dissidence McKaiser’s writing inspires, his membership in not one but two historically oppressed minority groups seems to soften the blow. Writing frankly about his experience of being raped, tthe shame he perceives as accompanying his race and his homosexual orientation, the author exposes a vulnerability that almost makes too much academic or ideological scrutiny of his work seem irrelevant. Perhaps that’s how he

ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
