chose to write this ed’s note on World Tourism Day, thinking that perhaps the significance of the date would imbue some kind of universal inspiration. Yet seeing representatives from around the world cluttering social media spaces with reasons why their respective countries are the best tourist destinations leaves me cold. Afrocentric, Afrophile, Afrofanatic – whatever you want to call it, I’ll claim it. If I were to be offered a romantic getaway under the Tuscan sun or a bush break under the African sun, I know without a doubt which one would appeal to me most. They say that wherever you go, it’s the company you keep that will make or break the experience. Perhaps it’s because of our lively culture with all its charming (and less charming) idiosyncrasies that the natural beauty of my homeland seems unsurpassable to me. Just yesterday I was on a tour with a Canadian lady who said that South African people always seem to have something to laugh about. This month’s literature review attests to the fact that we are a nation rich in comedic material, but also that we possess a fine sense of not only humor, but of innate joy and enthusiasm. I challenge you to spend a day in a South African township, surrounded by the exuberance of its community, and come

away still beset by your usual everyday gripes. Those of us who are fortunate enough to be able afford the luxuries that abound in Southern Africa really have no excuse not to celebrate its splendor. It would be impossible to lie in a regal bubble bath with a view of the African bushveld at Tintswalo Safari Lodge, for example, and bemoan the fact that our supermarket check-out points are not yet automated. Or to paraglide off Signal Hill and tut-tut over the economic viability of the stadium below. Or to surf Muizenberg’s famous waves or spend a lengthy Sunday afternoon enjoying a picnic on one of our beautiful wine estates and worry about the high UV factor that can so easily be guarded against. And if you still find something to complain about, perhaps you should just take a spoonful of our famous Malva pudding to make the medicine go down.

Get the perfect shot on the Cheetah Plains Photo Safari Photographing the Big 5 at the Sabi Sand Game Reserve is a magical experience affording snapping opportunities around every tree and over every hill. It is often said that snapping the Big 5 at Cheetah Plains will take at least double the number of memory cards than being anywhere else in Africa. It is just such a bountiful area. Sabi Sand is generally regarded as the best place on the planet to see and photograph the elusive leopard in the wild. The emphasis on the photo safari is capturing the best images possible, so timing the right lighting and chasing the predators as they hunt is all part of the experience. Safari vehicles allow optimal panoramic vision and trained trackers ensure photographers get up close and personal with Africa’s finest. Night drives will add another dimension to your photographic repertoire. Whether you are a novice just starting out with a new camera or a seasoned veteran, you’ll find the right mix of natural beauty, inspiration and photo opportunities to flex those creative muscles. On Friday, 21 September 2012 the world renowned Shamwari Group launched a Celebrity Ambassador Rhino Calendar at Grand Café & Room in Camps Bay to help raise awareness and much needed funds for the plight of the rhino in South Africa. The calendar also has the support of the Wilderness Foundation and Dr Ian Player. The celebrities who generously offered their time and energy towards the creation of the calendar include Josie Borain, Bernelee Daniell, Pnina Fenster, Katlego Maboe, Irit Noble, Sam Pegg and the two youth ambassadors, Jagger Pegg-Khalifa and Noa Pegg-Shuttleworth. The extensive shoot was conducted at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve outside Cape Town by renowned photographer Andrew Brown. All proceeds will be presented to the Wilderness Foundation through the Shamwari Group’s Forever Wild Campaign, which has already during the course of 2012 raised substantial funds for rhino awareness and protection. The calendar is perpetual, making it reusable every year as it is not restricted to the day or month. Each month presents a different photo of a celebrity ambassador, the Shamwari Group game rangers, wildlife and properties and an ‘awareness quote’. I’m standing on the edge of Cape Town’s iconic Signal Hill and a handsome man with a strong Bulgarian accent is securing all kinds of ropes and harnesses onto my trembling frame. The combination of coastal and thermal gliding, the rise of the vortices and the pressure of the g-force were exhilarating. At least that’s what the engineer I took along experienced during his flight. I was too busy flapping my arms in imitation of the rock kestrels that flew alongside us, enjoying the romance of the once frightening ‘Russian’ accent asking me if I had ever touched a cloud, and trying to urge my reluctant ‘pilot’ to reach the 1000m peak attainable on a really good day (unfortunately the weather did not permit that day). For all his friendliness and professionalism, I think said pilot may have grown frustrated with my whining, as the next question thrown at me was whether or not I liked rollercoasters. The fact that I gave him an emphatic negative did not stop him from taking thirty seconds to tell me to tighten my stomach muscles and keep breathing and to shut me up with some seriously acrobatic manoeuvres including a helix spiral that plummeted me down from my throne of invisible buoyancy onto sweet, sweet flat grass. Ever so proud of myself for not being the grown man lying prostrate on the ground after the flight, I skipped along the Seapoint Promenade, harness dragging behind me, revelling in my achievement and telling anyone who cared to listen what it was like to ‘fly off that hill’. Visit www.paraglide.co.za or call +27 76 892 2283 if you’d like to feel like a Wright brother too.

uckily he doesn’t give me enough time to answer. I had expected a lengthy set of instructions accompanied by an animated demonstration but before I knew it he started running behind me (of course I went in tandem), yelling my only instruction to keep my feet on the ground. At least this exercise relieved a bit of the tension (in my stomach, not on the ropes) as my effort to keep running whilst at least 2m off the ground left everyone on the takeoff in nervous hysterics. Eventually I was instructed to stop air-running and literally sit back and relax. I was so grateful that this was my only further instruction and that I could surrender to the experience like a puppet on a (really high) string. A puppet with no audience and an incredible view. The silence and aloneness experienced up in the air actually made me feel quite invincible, which was not something I had expected to feel in a harness at 500m above sea level. Suddenly I was the third Wright brother, flying for the first time with my nifty makeshift wings. Luckily for me, I didn’t have to spare a thought for the success of the flight. Instead, I was able to admire the architecture of the stadium and buildings of Greenpoint, follow the wakes of the ships on the Atlantic, pretend to touch the top of Lion’s Head with my toes and enjoy the most extreme realization of freedom whilst gazing down at the once-foreboding Robben Island.

he camps, which are within walking distance from the main lodge, are situated amongst acacia trees in combretum bushveld. Lantern-lit paths lead to Kifu (Desire), Matumba (Magic Potion), Rafiki (Friend) Madiba (Old Man), Safiri (Journey) and Utambo (Space) camps. The presidential suite, Royal African, is the epitome of regal opulence and grandeur. The unrivalled views of the African bushveld combined with the absolute privacy allow you to imagine yourself in your own African paradise. There should not be much use for the satellite television in the lounge in the summer when a private viewing deck with plunge pool in the presidential suite beckons. When the sun sets and the chill of a crisp chardonnay becomes more appealing than the growing chill of the pool, you will be treated to a sky lit by a most spectacular display of the Southern Cross and Orion’s Belt. The faint smell of a log fire from the open-air boma and the call of distant drums will surely stir you from your stargazing and beckon you towards the masterful culinary fusion of Western and African flavors. As you can imagine, Zwahili is an ideal honeymoon destination. It also caters for group conferences, intimate weddings and functions of up to 36 people. The lodge is situated in an area rich in historical significance. Rock paintings on the walls of surrounding caves show early inhabitance of San Bushmen. Nearby ‘Witkop’ is an archaeological site dating back to a time when the ‘bittereinders’, at the helm of the Boer Generals, utilized the koppie (small hill) as a hideout from the British for almost two years. With a temperate climate ranging from 15°C to 34°C in the summer months and 8°C to 28°C in the winter, Zwahili is the perfect location all year round. For the avid birder, the area boasts over 300 species of African birds including those rarely spotted, such as the lizard buzzard and brown snake eagle. The world-renowned Nylsvley Bird Sanctuary is in close proximity. Experienced guides conduct day and night game drives in open safari vehicles. Mammals ranging from the large majestic kudu to the small golden mole are present in the reserve. The latter, with its proudly South African green and gold fur, is only found in the Limpopo Bushveld region. Predators are present but not often seen though Leopard, brown hyena and several varieties of felids including caracal, serval and the African wild cat can be sighted on a drive. Zwahili also offers guided bush walks or a spa for those who need to revive body and soul. Experience an exquisite synthesis of nature’s wild pulse with the sublimity of comfort, elegance and style at Zwahili Private Game Lodge & Spa. Club Diamond Award for the past four years since their opening. While the restaurant’s impressive menu boasts over 120 dishes, the wine list stands tall at 300 Cape wines long. My partner hails her main course of venison medallions served with Amarula sauce and traditional chakalaka (a starch made from maize meal and a spicy bean curry) as authentic and superbly executed. According to Chef Jamie, Karibu prides itself in retaining the original form of the traditional dishes, whilst at the same time taking care to ‘make them look good’. A glass of Stanford Hills’ 2009 Jacksons Pinotage complements the meat dish, while I enjoy the Durbanville Rhinohills Chardonnay with my curried vegetable wrap (complete with traditional side offerings of corn on the cob and morogo spinach). Chef Jamie seems particularly proud of his dessert menu, surprising us with a large platter boasting a magnificent display of each of his sweet treats. Amarula crème brûlée, stewed peaches, homemade ice-cream, milk tart, Cape Malva pudding, koeksisters, chocolate brownies, chocolate truffles and a little chocolate potjie pot filled with orange cream leaves us in the most splendid sugared stupor. As usual, Sommelier Paul enhances the experience with the perfect selection of dessert wines, including Axe Hill’s vintage 2007 Cape Port and Rietvallei’s 2009 Red Muscadel. Karibu, indeed.

ave you ever been silenced by a bowl of soup? This is the effect that the curried mussel soup at Karibu Traditional South African Restaurant at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront has on my dining partner. When I finally manage to extract a few words from the usually loquacious lady, she insists that she has just experienced ‘Cape Malay culture in a bowl’. Executive Chef Jamie Rowntree clearly recommended the right starter. The word ‘karibu’ means ‘welcome’ in Swahili, a language that is predominantly spoken in East Africa. The restaurant takes great pride in transporting its diners to ‘a rugged Africa in a luxurious setting’. We are seated at a table overlooking the harbour, a heater and warm blankets keeping us cosy on the crisp Cape Town evening. I order the duo of camembert and brie coated in sesame seeds and accompanied by a berry compote as starter. Deep fried, of course. I certainly know my cheeses (I wouldn’t be half the woman I am today if it weren’t for cheese) and I am not in the least disappointed. After quietly watching us cluelessly peruse the wine list, Sommelier Paul Zantsi finally jumps to the rescue to ensure that our meal is perfectly paired with his carefullyselected wines. The soup seems to go down well with a glass of Buitenverwachting Blanc 2010 and I relish my combination of cheese with Raka’s 2005 Quinary. Karibu boasts a fine wine list that has won the Diner’s

cheeses we have seen. Five different kinds, to be exact. The setting is intimate and the couple seated on the opposite end of the lawn eyes us quizzically from time to time, no doubt pondering the nature of our ‘affair’. We are such happy campers (as our gallant waiter describes us) that we really don’t mind the speculation. Lost in our private Provence, we muse at the idea of reaching enlightenment through the pure and ongoing pursuit of pleasure. And we have yet to explore that which the estate is really famous for. Noble Hill creates unique wines from estate vines. The 30 hectare vineyard produces wines that are juicy yet austere, elegant, and above all, unique to the place where they are made. Our bottle of choice for the day is the Noble Hill Mourvèdre Rosé 2012, which proves to be as delicious on the palate as it is on the eye.

M
y picnic partner on this particular sunny Sunday afternoon is surprising me with all kinds of unexpected behaviors. First she is a slightly confused Marie Antoinette, ordering the rest of the world to eat healthy balanced meals while she lives on cake. She then leaves our red and white checked blanket for a while to dip her feet into the water of the dam beside which we are seated and returns with a display of utter devastation at the fact that the sun would dare to soften her precious cheese. We have yet to open the alcohol. We are indulging in the most decadent of feasts on the sprawling lawns of Noble Hill Wine Estate on the slopes of the Simonsberg mountains just outside Franschhoek Village. We are feeling duly French, sipping on our blushing Rosé between mouthfuls of grapes, pears, pastries, salads and cheese. Oh, the

We vow to return in winter to enjoy the fieriness of the estate’s own James Dean in a bottle, experiencing its full-mouth feel and sumptuous black cherry and caramel taste. Although currently in the throes of its nubile youth, the Noble Hill Merlot promises to keep giving generously for the next 17 or so years. The classic, elegant Noble Hill Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 attests to the fact that the Noble Hill vineyards are planted in some of the world’s oldest soils. The earthy, cool varietal with its black fruit, ash, dark chocolate and stone fruits boasts a distinctively Old World character. There’s a reason why the Simonsberg appellation has been hailed as Cabernet Country. Last but certainly not least, the Noble Hill Syrah 2008, with its velvety structure, fine tannins, black fruit and olive purée, alludes to luxury of the finest sort. Almost as fine as the beautiful picnic we experienced on the estate. Mourvèdre has traditionally been used for the production of high quality rosé wines in Provence. This particular rosé stirs aromas of Turkish delight, strawberries, watermelon and black currant. It has a crisp, dry finish and pairs perfectly with the finger foods of our picnic. We take home a bottle of the estate’s Sauvignon Blanc, which promises a tight, crisp structure with notes of freshlycut gooseberries, melon and nectarine. A real summer treat to be enjoyed whilst lounging beside the pool. While we enjoy our own longest summer day, we learn about Noble Hill’s 2011 ‘The Longest Day’ wine, which shows a complex array of aromas and flavours. Fruit notes include melon, passion fruit, green apple and gooseberry with more subtle notes of green figs, nectarine and peach. Another fruity offering of which Noble Hill is duly proud is their crisp, clean and easy-drinking Chardonnay, which shows fresh primary fruit aromas of citrus, lemon curd, and orange blossom. The people at Noble Hill fondly refer to their 2011 Viognier as their ‘beautiful blonde with an astrophysics PhD’ – a pleasure to behold but not afraid to show its substance. The Viognier has bright, explosive, floral aromas of honeysuckle and orange blossom. The primary fruit expression is peach and pear, with a hint of straw. The lengthy, dry finish reveals a bit of spice, dried herbs, and fennel.

the surfers are out in full force. According to Michael Walker, it is unrecorded history that an Australian, while passing through Cape Town circa 1910, visited Muizenberg, noticed a plank of wood on the beach, picked it up and showed the locals how to catch a wave. As the story goes, before long small boys came riding in on the waves, clutching logs of wood and planks. The carpenters of Cape Town were kept busy making flat-paned boards, which they soon refined to have curved ends, which meant less chance of a nose-dive. And so the modern surf board and the surfing frenzy were born to the Cape. Our next stop is Kalk Bay, originally called Lime Bay because of the abundance of lime in the area. The weather is good and the harbour wall is open to the public, allowing us to engage with the fishermen and admire the detail of their brightly-coloured boats. One of the senior fishermen, 49-year-old Lesley Theunissen, has been fishing in the area since he was twelve years old and indulges us in an insider’s take on the area. We are fortunate enough to see groups of seals playing in the water and posing delightfully for the cameras. On our way out, we stop at 70-year-old Kalkys, which is known as the best fish and chips restaurant in Cape Town. We then venture along to Simon’s Town, which is

W
e are lucky enough to spend a day exploring this spectacular part of the world with an energetic, animated and knowledgeable tour guide from Must Tours, a great company that offers exclusive one-onone tours or tours for two to three people. Our first stop is Muizenberg, once affectionately known as Brighton on the Beach. This special seaside village is a conservation area with a rich history. According to Michael Walker’s Muizenberg – a forgotten story, by the early 1900s Muizenberg was proving to be the most popular holiday resort in South Africa, not only for the rich diamond and gold magnates, but also for countless upcountry visitors, who not only wished to enjoy the refreshing sea air but wanted to be part of the vibrant ambience. It was a Mecca for businessmen from the Rand and Kimberley, who would bring their families on holiday and enjoy the camaraderie of their fellow businessmen. Historical personalities among the many eminent people who visited Muizenberg included Lord Kitchener, General Smuts, Sir Patrick Duncan, Alfred Beit, JB Robinson, Bernard Shaw, Rudyard Kipling and Agatha Christie. After walking the Historical Mile and visiting the site of the Battle of Muizenberg and the cottage in which Cecil John Rhodes passed away, we head for the beach, where
similarly rich in history and natural heritage. In 1741 the Dutch East India Company decided that Simon’s Bay would be a winter anchorage for all their ships from 15 May to 15 August each year. This naturally meant the establishing of the town of Simon’s Town, and some of the original Dutch East India Co. structures still stand today. After the second British occupation of 1806 a decision was made to move the Royal Navy Establishment from Cape Town to Simon’s Town under the direction of Naval Commissioner Rear Admiral Dundas. From here on Simon’s Town really prospered and the shops, schools, hospitals, taverns, hotels and boarding houses along the route recall those eventful days. The influence of a powerful Navy stationed here to protect the British Empire’s trade routes is all too evident in the buildings along the historical mile. We appreciate the architecture and enjoy the history of a unique seaport steeped in the history of the Dutch (1741 – 1795), the Royal Navy (1814 – 1957) and later the South African Navy (1957 - ). After an informative historical walk, we visit the African penguins at Burgher’s Walk Sensitive Penguin Breeding area. One of 17 penguin species, the African penguin, also known as the Jackass penguin for its donkey-like bray, is the only penguin species to occur naturally on the African continent and is found nowhere else in the world. African penguin numbers are dwindling fast. At the start of the 20th Century, there were an estimated 4 million individual African penguins in the wild. In the last 100 years, these numbers have decreased by 90% to approximately 24 000 breeding pairs in the wild in 2012. In 2010, due to the rapid decline, the species was reclassified from vulnerable to endangered on the IUCN Red Data List. Currently, the biggest threats to the African penguin species include habitat destruction through expanding human settlements along the coastline, commercial over-fishing, pollution and oil spills. In addition, the African penguin competes with the Cape Fur seal for the same food source and breeding space. It is estimated that if the African penguin keeps on declining as it did over the last 30 years, the species will be extinct within 16 years. Another delightful animal we learn about is Just Nuisance, the Great Dane who used to spend all his time at the naval base, even accompanying the soldiers on the train into town for their drinking trips and herding them back to the naval base like a border collie trusted with a group of drunken sheep. From time to time, Just Nuisance would be kicked off the train for not having a ticket, an inconvenience that was rectified by him being officially enlisted into the British Navy (yes, he had a tag too) and thus becoming entitled to his own train ticket. When he died, Just Nuisance was honoured with the full ceremonial burial of

We then drive through Ocean View, which poses a stark contrast to the elitism and wealth that once defined Kommetjie. Ocean View is a township that was set up during the apartheid era to cater for the people who had been forcibly removed from Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek. When the original residents were moved to the area, there were no schools, shops or access point to transport. Ironically enough, there isn’t even a view of the sea. Although there has been development in the area, the spectacle of township living so close to the large houses of the wealthy in the surrounding areas provides a sobering cross-section of the reality of South Africa today. Must Tours believes in responding pro-actively to this kind of dichotomy, and our next stop is a community upliftment company in Hout Bay. Original T-Bag Designs was started 14 years ago by Jill Heyes. Today, it has become an internationally-recognised company that employs 13 members of the local township in its Hout Bay workshop. This group of original artists makes beautiful cards, candles, coasters, pot stands, placemats, trays and artworks using the canvas of teabags donated from all over the world. They also make fashionable bags that have been sported by the likes of Hilary Clinton and

any other military officer. Our next stop is at Cape Point, where we are dazzled by the spectacular display of flora and fauna, including the Cape’s famous fynbos vegetation and Chacma baboons, of which we were fortunate enough to see some babies up close. We take the Flying Dutchman Funicular up to the top of Cape Point, marvelling at the expanse below us where the currents of the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. After our spectacular stop at Cape Point, we drive through the quaint seaside village of Scarborough, named after Scarborough in the UK. Scarborough was declared an eco-village in 1966, and strict building restrictions ensure that most of the houses in the tiny village are versions of the original houses of the area. Refreshingly, there are no shops in Scarborough. With roads named Seagull Road and Jasmine Way, an abundance of King Proteas and a delightful little beach, Scarborough is instantly enchanting. We drive through Kommetjie next, the preferred destination of the rich and famous when the railway line from Cape Town to Muizenberg to St James and Simon’s Town brought the masses to their previously exclusive holiday destinations.
the president of Coca-Cola. The artists are given the opportunity to come up with their own concepts, and they split, iron, paint, stick and varnish the tea bags in the most innovative of ways. Original T-Bag Designs won an award at the 2002 World Summit for Sustainable Development, and the employees have been able to buy their own houses, put food on the table and send their kids to school all thanks to the humble tea bag. We purchase a number of artworks with which to decorate our homes before heading to the Hout Bay Museum, where we learn about the primitive fishermen who lived in the area thousands of years ago. What an incredible day of learning and experiencing in one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Our guide’s flexibility and spontaneity is refreshing, and we see how she would have managed to cater for the guests before us, with the husband obsessed with sea photos and the wife only interested in the status of HIV and Aids in the area. Although we would highly recommend the scenic South Peninsula tour, Must Tours also offers sports tours that include a variety of coastal sports and sports massage, arts & crafts tours and volunteering tours in the area. the Dutch and the British put aside their differences long enough to set up a roaring slave trade, and the Western Cape is described as a good place to make wine and coloured people. Of course, the convenient alliance between the Boers and the Brits did not last very long, and Nik believes that biltong shops in Putney are the former’s way of saying ‘screw you for that Second Boer War’. According to Nik, by the time the union came along,
haka Sisulu, CEO of Cheesekidz for Humanity, states in his book that ‘it is exactly because of our histories, good or bad, that we end up where we do’. Each author in the series journeys into the history of South Africa as a starting point for an exploration of his or her identity in the complex South Africa of today. Shaka shares his knowledge of and fascination with the history of Africa and the struggles of African people, the struggles of South Africa in particular, the colonial wars, the Anglo-Boer War, white unification and black segregation, and the history of the African National Congress (ANC) in a forthright and intelligent way. While Shaka’s overview is formal and academic, comedian Nik Rabinowitz’s tongue-in-cheek exposition is incredibly amusing. According to Nik, the hardest thing about South African history is getting people to agree on it. He thus decides to relate the country’s disputed past in the most entertaining way, tracing our development from ‘primitive violent racists’ to ‘sophisticated violent racists’. Nik starts at the very beginning, viewing cave paintings as the MySpace of the Stone Age. The early settlers are then described in no euphemistic terms, with Jan van Riebeeck portrayed as a drunken Dutchman and the British as suffering from a serious case of beach-envy. The black folk, all the while, are portrayed as standing on the sidelines trying to point out that this was indeed their land to begin with (although nobody listened until they saw the big spears come out). Nik notes that, like good white colonialists everywhere,

their luck for having made it to the party.’ Each writer imparts his or her own nuggets of wisdom and advice to the youth of today, from the invaluable to the fun and frivolous. Shaka urges young people to invest themselves in their country but to know the difference between optimism and blind faith. He emphasises that ‘in the end, it is only through thoughtfully considered acts that challenge conventional thinking, and which are in the best interest of our collective, that we can truly become’. Khaya aims to dispel the misconception that when you are young and want to be involved in the political process, you have to be angry, abandon reason and display all the vices of youth in order to make an impact on the political landscape. He cites Thomas Jefferson (who wrote the Declaration of Independence at age 33), Martin Luther King, Jr (who became leader of the civil rights movement at 27) and Steve Biko (who died at 31 after his selfless and wholehearted participation in the freedom struggle) as worthy role models for the youth of today. Danny K provides advice on how to deal with rejection and the value of resilience and Anele, in her own wonderful way, urges us to accept that some things just aren’t for us but to remember that, as people of all ages and races around the world, we all have the right to live our ‘delicious’ lifestyles in a way that celebrates who we are and where we have come from.

included hating everyone who wasn’t Afrikaans and keeping Mandela in prison. We all know what happened when Madiba was finally released. For the purposes of his overview, Nik finds it sufficient to note that Madiba danced in a way that made white people think that one day, if they practised, they too could dance. Then along came Thabo Mbeki. Tboz, as Nik calls him – a man of the people, as long as those people enjoy presidential pontification and a jolly good round of pipe-smoking. One day, presumably surfing the internet for whisky-tasting tips or superior pipe-tobacco deals, Tboz came across a web page that espoused the theory that HIV doesn’t cause AIDS. Instead, poverty was to blame. Since that was right up his economic alley, he decided that this was the theory for him. Undeterred by the fact that this ‘scientific’ article was heavily decorated with unicorn .gifs and scientific derision, Thabo is notoriously remembered for adopting AIDS-denialism as official policy. In true Rabinowitz style, the entire Arms Deal is attributed to the fact that ‘some South Africans decided that helping the poor was boring and that they’d much rather buy weapons instead’. Our generation is described by Nik as being all about change: regime changes, party changes, road-name changes, province changes and Facebook status changes. He takes a jab at both ruling and opposing parties.
A strong believer in the ‘inherent localised logic and pragmatism in all culture’, Shaka insists that if there ever was a time for a cultural system to be transplanted, this would be it. He calls for the imbuing of age-old Ubuntu principles in modern-day living. He also stresses the importance of transparency and debate, attributing the persistence of Africa’s ‘many oft-quoted ailments’ to ‘the silent participation of those who can and should hold their leaders accountable, but who do not’. Advertising hot-shot Khaya Dlanga seems to agree, asserting that the ANC leadership today lacks the intellectual acumen of its founding members. Radio presenter Anele Mdoda steers away from politics and towards gender relations in her memoir, pointing out the early social problem of how young boys treat young girls. She is enraged by the fact that black men have so much to say about black women’s hair, but that they don’t want to be criticised about the long list of maintenance claims at courts across the country by women who are struggling to make ends meet because they are raising seeds that were left in pursuit of another life. Khaya and Shaka also mention the issue of South Africa’s absent fathers, with Khaya going on to say that ‘the determination and strength of the black woman has never been applauded as well as it ought to have been’. Race relations are of course explored throughout the memoirs, with Shaka insisting that we as South Africans are ‘arrogant or misinformed enough to think we could have changed our world completely in 18 years’. Although Khaya jokingly cites the strengths of white people as limited to swimming, convincing black people that broccoli is a food and mastering the art of the fake smile, his sharing of the fact that South Africa currently has a white unemployment figure of only 6% while the percentage of unemployed black people is over 30%, is no laughing matter. He believes this to be a direct hangover from the ‘legislated poverty’ of apartheid South Africa. Anele lightens the tone with the observation that ‘black people dance like you are lucky to have them at your party, while white people dance like they cannot believe

Archbishop Tutu’s criticism of Jacob Zuma as an embarrassment of a president is taken quite seriously by Nik, who reckons that someone who wears a dress and a pointy hat to work on a regular basis must have a pretty high embarrassment threshold. Julius Malema is described as a ‘pudgy little Terminator’ who believes himself to be the kingmaker of Limpopo, and the DA (Democratic Alliance) as the annoying goody-goody who jumps up and down waving her hand to get the teacher’s attention. On a far more serious note, Shaka blames our present ‘democracy’ for assuring society’s transition from valuing people and their contributions to valuing people for their material possessions.

A Note for Smokers South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
Services Guide
• Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.
