I
t’s my birthday this month. Yes, I am self-centred enough to consider this newsworthy (I am a writer, after all), but what I really want to wax lyrical about is how lucky I am to have been born in South Africa. For one, I was able to grow up reading about the marvellous creatures that I would one day meet on safari. This month’s Read section presents some lovely recently published South African children’s books, the characters of which you are almost guaranteed to meet during a visit to one of our May destinations Aquila Game Reserve near Worcester. I was able to spend at least a third of my childhood outdoors, where I still spend most of my time regardless of what the activity involves (check out our feature on Karkloof Spa to see how you can enjoy a safari spa experience!). Another thing with which I was lucky enough to grow up was an abundance of fresh, healthy and tasty
local produce. I’m not sure an import ever saw the inside of our fridge, yet I feasted almost as heartily back then as I did at Cape Town’s famous Aubergine restaurant last month. One thing with which I did not grow up is a taste of the country’s famous wines, but I have since made up for it during visits to esteemed estates such as Warwick Wine Estate and Van Loveren Family Vineyards (featured in this edition). I’m afraid I never outgrew the assumption that birthdays are synonymous only with gifts. This year, though, we are giving things away on my special day. Check out the May giveaways if you don’t want to miss out on this sudden and unexpected magnanimity. Ok I’m off to drink a Calitzdorp cocktail!

Johannesburg restaurants become StreetSmart to help homeless children StreetSmart SA, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the social integration and upliftment of street children, has launched in Johannesburg and is rallying restaurants to become involved in helping to rebuild the lives of children at risk in the city. Funds are raised by adding a voluntary R5 donation to each table’s bill at participating restaurants. Since its inception in Cape Town in 2005 under the patronage of Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, StreetSmart has raised over R6 million. The beneficiary selected for StreetSmart Johannesburg is Twilight Children, an organization which works with children and young adults in an effort to integrate them into mainstream society by teaching them skills and building their confidence, thereby enabling them to become valuable citizens. At the time of the launch, six Johannesburg restaurants had already joined the StreetSmart initiative: Five Hundred at The Saxon, Qunu at The Saxon, Balata at The Fairway Hotel & Golf Resort, dw eleven -13, The Griffen Gastropub and Red Rabbit. www.streetsmart.org.za 12

fans, birthday girls and bachelor boys revel in the relaxed and festive ambience of one of South Africa’s greatest wine farms. With a strong legacy in South African wine and a heritage drawn from Norma Ratcliffe, one of the first female winemakers in the country, Warwick has won international acclaim with its simple philosophy that good wine is about good people and good grapes. The Warwick Wine Club offers its members 20% discount on all wines, including the famous First Lady Cabernet Sauvignon, Old Bush Vines Pinotage and Three Cape Ladies Cape Blend. We were introduced to some of the glorious wines through a private tasting and cellar tour experience, as well as on a safari-style tour of the estate’s ‘Big 5’ wine varietals (each of which is lovingly compared to its wildlife counterpart). From laid-back lunches to corporate events and kiddies’ parties, Warwick Wine Estate caters for just about any occasion. he diverse estate offers the ultimate relaxation/ entertainment/celebration experience – a host of award-winning wines, fine fresh local food and tailored finishes for any event. We were lucky enough to enjoy a famous Warwick picnic on the rolling lawns that surround the estate’s pristine lake, sampling delicacies from local foodie hotspots whilst lazing around on large blankets and oversized cushions. From cheese and charcuterie to icecream sundaes, the picnic basket seemed to overflow in veritable Mary Poppins style. None of it would be complete without the Bordeaux blend and wooded Chardonnay with which we washed it all down, of course. We were in the mood to loll around on the grass, but if we had fancied a posh private picnic experience we could have chosen a secluded picnic pod complete with table, seating and fully-serviced bar. We could even have escaped to the mountainous vineyards and indulged in an exclusive outdoor feast in the estate’s luxury open-air ‘penthouse’, which offers panoramic views of Cape Town and the winelands. We simply preferred to be in the midst of it all, watching a diverse clientele of curious tourists, local wine

that was delivered at each meal. A huge platter of delicious and diverse tapas accompanied by a jug of chilled homemade rooibos iced tea awaited us on arrival. We awoke to a decadent continental breakfast spread and the sounds of the hundreds of birds with which we shared the majestic trees. Hearty country dinners were enjoyed with great local wines on our balcony at sunset, and the only time we felt it necessary to leave our little wooden palace was when the heat of the day drew us to the sparkling pool and delightful garden in which we would enjoy al fresco lunches and serious sunbathing sessions. Apparently the town of Tulbagh is a treat in itself, what with its striking architecture and quaint village lifestyle. I can’t really comment much on it though, as the furthest we ventured from our tree house was to the spa at Vindoux, which transported us to a sensual paradise with fynbos herbal massages, relaxing facials and colourful nail finishes. I would go back to Vindoux in a heartbeat. Tulbagh is only an hour and a half’s drive from Cape Town and everything from the freshly-baked morning muffins and caramel tea to the fairy lights that frame windows overlooking mountainous landscapes was just perfect. We didn’t even experience the romantic couples’ picnic, the signature braai experience or the Wine by Bike tour offered by the family-run working fruit farm. We were, of course, too busy enjoying boozy berry Frangelico desserts in the jet spa bath of this tree house like no other. For more information or to make a booking, call +27 23 00635, e-mail vindouxfarm@gmail.com or visit www.vindoux.com.
he most exciting development of my childhood was the building of a tree house in the backyard. As each piece of wood was lovingly nailed into place, I would plan a different chapter of my new life as an independent homeowner. I would entertain obligatory guests on the lowest level, take special visitors up to the middle and muse upon 7-year-old existence from my exclusive perch at the top. After about a decade of memories and rain, my little property finally started to give in, and today the dogs chew on the remaining pieces of wood. With the dilapidation of my stronghold came a new repertoire of domestic fantasies that included a penthouse in New York City with an elevator and a rooftop garden. I was almost reluctant to visit Vindoux Guest Farm in Tulbagh last month. I had done my tree house time and wasn’t really in the mood for spiders, leakages and rotting wood. Luckily, I made the trip anyway (admittedly in the name of country food and a spa day). One night in one of the farm’s exquisite little tree houses and the urban penthouse apartment fantasy immediately became riddled with annoying neighbours and the relentless hum of traffic. Now I want to live in a tree house all over again – as long as it is as magical and luxurious as the one in which I found myself at Vindoux. Skillfully built and beautifully finished, the little wooden hideout in the trees meets all the needs of the luxury traveller. Perfect temperature control, a jet spa bath, fine linen and panoramic vistas make for a better accommodation experience than many a fivestar hotel room. Not to mention the fresh, gourmet country fare 24

lthough hopelessly late, we received a warm and enthusiastic greeting from the farm’s lively and attractive Marketing Manager Bonita Malherbe. The large architectural masterpiece that is the tasting room was teeming with people of all ages, and the festive atmosphere set the tone for our adventures over the next two days. A tour of the garden at Van Loveren, with its majestic trees planted to commemorate everything from wars and peace declarations to leaders and thinkers over the years, served to introduce us to the rich history of the farm and surrounding areas. After our tour we headed towards Christina’s @ Van Loveren, a popular, relaxed Bistro (originally the farm’s Manor House) famous for its pizzas, burgers and salads. The day called for a light, refreshing lunch, and we enjoyed delicious fresh watermelon juice and delightful summer salads whilst listening to the live music and watching the antics of a nearby bridal party (made all the more entertaining as their bottles of delicious Van Loveren Strawberry Cream were replaced for the third or fourth time). That being said, we weren’t doing too badly with our light, crisp Van Loveren Neil’s Pick Colombar either. The fare at Christina’s is locally sourced and wonderfully fresh. We decided to sample their famous thin-based
pizzas the following day and chuckled at the ‘Man Salad’ offering on the menu (steak strips, potato wedges and onion rings on lettuce). Van Loveren is famous for its legendary Four Cousins range – South Africa’s number one selling wine and no doubt the only brand that is enjoyed everywhere from Sandton to Soweto. What many people don’t realise is that Four Cousins is merely one in a host of award-winning wines on offer at Van Loveren. The Christina Van Loveren Sauvignon Blanc, for example, has won Gold at the esteemed Michelangelo Awards as well as Double Gold at the Veritas Awards. The Van Loveren Neil’s Pick Colombar is also a Michelangelo Gold Award winner, while the Christina Van Loveren Shiraz has been rated in the top 100 wines of South Africa. The Christina Van Loveren Methode Cap Classique, the Van Loveren Sauvignon Blanc and the Van Loveren Red Muscadel have are all four-star recommendations in Platter’s Wine Guide. We were lucky enough to enjoy a tutored cheese, chocolate and wine pairing during our visit to the estate. Decadent cheese and wine pairings such as the Van Loveren Cramon Cab/Merlot with La Mont matured cheddar and the Christina Van Loveren Noble Late Harvest with Dalewood Huguenot cheese sent our senses soaring. We must admit that the chocolate and wine spread was our 28

favourite, though – particularly the Van Loveren Blanc de Noir Blush with rose petal geranium chocolate and the Van Loveren Cape Ruby with Cape Malay spice chocolate pairs. After a thoroughly enjoyable and desperately indulgent day at the estate, we set off for a romantic dinner at Robertson’s Passio Restaurant, where we enjoyed everything from Mediterranean salads and stick prawns to caramelized onion, brie and black forest ham pizzas. Surrounded by sophisticated old-world deco and a veritable library of literary classics, we stayed long after our frozen tiramisu was finished. The restaurant is familyrun in the most hands-on way, and we spent the evening engaging with the husband and wife team as well as their two lovely daughters. Finally, feeling positively relaxed and satiated, we retired to the modest but homely Lemon Tree Guest House, where we enjoyed sweet wine and DVD’s before rolling into our colourful beds. Waking up for a 7am hike the next morning was no mean feat. Somehow we managed, though, and I’m so glad we did. The 7.5km ‘Fish Eagle’ hiking trail on Van Loveren crosses the Breede River, ascends spectacular Rooikrans peaks and offers panoramic views of the valley from every lookout point. The unique flora comprises everything from virgin Klein Karoo vegetation to Renosterveld fynbos and the resident birdlife is a real treat. What an amazing weekend of indulgence and exploration. Thank you, Van Loveren. For further information or bookings call +27 (0)23 615 1505, e-mail info@vanloveren.co.za or visit www.vanloveren.co.za.

t was supposed to be a date. My partner, sunburnt and hung-over, stuck out like a sore thumb in the beautiful and sophisticated space. There isn’t anything stuffy about Aubergine – it’s laid back enough to serve as an after-work drinks as well as a formal dinner party venue. I had clearly just chosen the most awkward dining partner in Cape Town. With his incoherent dish pronouncements and request for ‘the cheapest wine on the list’, he certainly wasn’t ideal company. Enter our waitron. And I use the term loosely. This maître d’ swooped in to save the situation at just the right time, providing all the romance and charm that was lacking at our table. His pairing suggestions proved perfect, his service was impeccable and his general manner matched the situation far more aptly than that of my dining partner. And what a situation it was to match! From the sophisticated yet understated deco of the cosy restaurant to its unique and specialized menu, Aubergine will delight even the fussiest of foodies. Like a true culinary tourist, I chose the signature aubergine soufflé starter, relishing each bite of marinated chèvre, braised tomatoes and mizuna coulis as my partner was (thankfully) kept busy with the line fish carpaccio with sesame guacamole, which he devoured with embarrassing but understandable fervour. The main course saw us enjoying a chalmar beef fillet with oyster mushrooms and vegetable rice paper cones with bean sprout sauté. By the time we had reached dessert, I no longer cared about the non-existent chemistry between the long-suffering participants on the ‘date’ – I had mouthfuls of souffléed berry and vanilla pancake to complete my world, and he had a chocolate fondant to shut him up for a while. The fact that I tried three of the speciality teas on the menu despite the dwindling conversation is testament to the quality of the fig, blood orange and China snow teas served at Aubergine. I guess I knew that it was the end of my satisfaction for the night, so I positively revelled in it. I can almost guarantee that you will too. quila’s charm lies in its ability to marry conservation and luxury in an intimate environment that is less than two hours from Cape Town. The dry yellow grass of the Karoo is home to Aquila’s large variety of wildlife. The surroundings are not only scenic but alive with possibility and adventure, with guests offered the opportunity to enjoy quad bike, horseback or traditional game drives, stopping only metres from the reserve’s beautiful inhabitants. Aquila doesn’t have many tall trees, so we perched at the edge of our seats and watched a giraffe feast on nearby shrubs during our Saturday afternoon game drive. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly, meandering through the yellow grass at sunset and setting up a sundowners experience like no other. Whilst sipping our Amarula and snacking on local dried fruit, nuts and biltong, we witnessed a male elephant attempting to woo a female rhino, continuously trying to extend his trunk in her direction while she coyly backed away. Another highlight was our trip to the (extensive) lion enclosure, which houses two male and four female lions, who we saw snuggling up to each other like a group of large, lazy housecats on a sofa (theirs was of course made of grass and soft sand). South Africa’s rhino population has suffered at the hands of a persistent spate of poaching attacks. Aquila’s rhino fund and Animal Rescue Centre were designed to protect our rhino population and other endangered species. After our Sunday morning game drive, we stood meters from a leopard and watched him take pride of place in his safe house at the centre. The leopard had been rescued from the Free State after a farmer had caught him hunting sheep. Aquila’s rescued animal population and the wildlife in the reserve at large are afforded a great deal of respect. For instance, on our Saturday evening game drive a large water buffalo stood blocking the entrance to the lodge area as

our vehicle attempted to enter the gate. He bellowed and snorted at us as we marvelled at his strength, waiting at least half an hour for him to move on so that we could drive back to the lodge. Returning to our chalet to prepare for supper on Saturday evening, my partner and I could not stop marvelling at the photographs of lions, elephants, giraffes, rhinos and different species of buck that we had seen congregated around the watering hole earlier that evening. We quietly enjoyed a glass of wine at our aptly named luxury chalet – Sirius. The supernova accommodation looks over the reserve and two swimming pools. The chalet boasts a unique rock bathroom with a large, sunken bath that we later filled with bubbles. The outdoor rain shower was also a delight at night or early in the morning, as we could see the stars while hot water cascaded elephant-style down our backs. Luxury and authenticity are around every corner at Aquila. The view from our balcony was as breathtaking as our evening safari had been. Garden paths are lit with lanterns in a garden of wild flowers that reflect the stars in the sky and the walk to and from the restaurant and pool bar are full of romance and beauty. The reserve’s friendly staff members serve a hearty buffet dinner and breakfast that cater to all tastes. Special touches like cheese platters go well with the commendable wine list. The variety of food served at Aquila is as endless as the water that falls over the edge of its infinity pool. The Aquila experience marries spectacular wildlife viewing with the scenic vistas of the Langeberg and Outeniqua mountains of the Klein Karoo. The reserve is one that will sparkle in our memory like bubbles in a glass of wine, bubbles in a bath, the glint in a lioness’s eye or the stars in the early morning African sky.

Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
