t’s hard to believe that we are already half way through the year. It doesn’t really gel with me, this sixth month. Perhaps it’s because I am South African. Let me explain. As a nation, we’re not really accustomed to halves. Nothing in South Africa is done in half measure. Our people are loud, our animals are wild and our landscape is either wonderfully lush or depressingly arid. It’s not without sadness that I note that our incomes and living conditions are in most instances either completely pleasant or completely desolate. I know I keep saying this, but we need you to visit our country of extremes to witness and embrace the excesses of each side of the fence. I guarantee you won’t have a halfassed experience. I hope that this mid-year edition of the Ultimate Guide to Africa takes you all the way to your dream destination.

Kapama Private Game Reserve
Kapama Private Game Reserve is an African Eden. Sweeping across 13 000 hectares of savannah and riverine forest, Kapama represents a piece of Africa as it used to be. With the mighty Drakensberg mountains in the distance and iconic Kruger National Park to the east, Kapama has distilled the finest wildlife safari offerings for the enjoyment of guests. As part of the greater Kruger area, vast herds of buffalo, elephant and antelope are resident on Kapama, along with plentiful predators. The reserve is a slice of wilderness paradise far from the madding crowd; a place of renewal and reconnection with the natural world. The iconic and most dangerous wild animals of Africa – the Big Five – are at home on Kapama, but so too are over 40 other mammal species and 350 different types of birds. Game drives and bush walks offer fascinating encounters with wildlife, but Kapama also offers guests unique African wildlife experiences. It’s not only the wildlife encounters that are superb at Kapama – so, too, are its four diverse luxurious safari lodges. Vibrant River Lodge, breathtaking Kapama Karula, olde worlde-Africa Buffalo Camp and fantastical, nature-inspired Southern Camp welcome guests from around the globe to experience wild Africa in sumptuous style. Romantic sleep-outs on the reserve and decadent African spa treatments at the Wellness Centre are other enticing offerings that encourage complete relaxation and enjoyment of the evocative surrounding environment. Yet, even without doing anything at all, Kapama’s air of natural calm will work its magic and renew your body and mind. Kapama’s complimentary transfers are effortless for fly-in safari guests arriving on scheduled flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town. The region is serviced by Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport, a mere 10-minute drive from the entrance to the reserve, and transferring to the lodge in open vehicles means game viewing right from arrival – so your safari starts even before check-in. All you need to do is sit back, relax and be enchanted by Africa.

Constantia Glen, the magnificently appointed boutique wine estate known for exceptional cool climate Sauvignon Blancs with great ageing potential, has just released its 2012 vintage.

oasting a notable Sémillon component (10%), the wine also has a larger proportion of clone SB-10, better known as the “weather station” clone of Sauvignon Blanc, which lends the wine more intense and expressive aromatics. The Sémillon adds to its wonderful richness and enhances its ability to age gracefully. “This is a classic Constantia wine with beautiful elegance, length and freshness, which indicates excellent ageing potential,” says winemaker Justin van Wyk. This multi-layered wine shows depth and minerality, with uplifting aromas of nettle and gooseberry backed by nectarine and kiwi fruit flavours as well as a notable underlying perfume of elderflower that is very characteristic of the Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc. “The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc has excellent fruit purity and since it also has sufficient richness and texture from the Sémillon and five months of lees ageing, we decided not to include a portion of oak-fermented to this vintage,” adds Justin, who suggests enjoying the wine with honeyroasted butternut soup infused with sage and drizzled with bits of gorgonzola cheese or lightly smoked salmon grilled with lemon and butter served on a bed of greens with olive oil. The 2012 Constantia Glen Sauvignon Blanc is available at fine restaurants and boutique wine shops and sells for R100 at the cellar door. One of the jewels of the Constantia Wine Valley, Constantia Glen is open from 10h00 till 17h00 on weekdays and from 10h00 till 16h00 on Saturdays and Sundays. t was difficult to focus on any one thing on arrival at the Marine Hotel in Hermanus. I was torn between marveling at the regal yet fresh deco of the exquisite property and its five-star facilities and checking for whales out the expansive sea-facing windows. I would later discover that there was no urgency to my search – that I could spot whales whilst luxuriating with my bottle of complimentary wine in the comfort of my giant bed. The Marine Hotel boasts a legacy of quality and sophistication in every detail – from the myriad delicacies on offer in the sunny breakfast conservatory to the unique amenities in the large luxurious bathrooms. Each suite offers something different – mine was large enough to host a cocktail party while another offered more by way of finer detail than space. I wonder in which unique suite they decided to host Brad Pitt when he visited the hotel some years back? The location of the hotel is ideal. Aside from the ability to whale watch from the bedrooms, there is the advantage of being just a stone’s throw from the beach as well as some of the best local shops and restaurants. That being said, the sparkling pool, chic bar, restorative spa, opulent lounge and top-notch in-house dining venues offer enough by way of entertainment and indulgence for guests to remain in the hotel for the entire duration of their stay. When I did venture out of the hotel, it was for a whale watching boat cruise with Southern Right Charters. Although the experience took place during the tail end of last year’s whale season, we were lucky enough to spot a number of the majestic creatures as they commanded the ocean right beneath and beside us. Did I mention that we saw an albino calf? If that’s not a highlight, I’m not sure what is. For more information or to place a booking for this year’s whale season (starting this month), visit www.collectionmcgrath.com and www.southernrightcharters.co.za.

fermented wine that was already delicious! First on the official tasting menu was the estate’s Blush Syrah/Viognier. The twilight pink wine is a unique combination of Shiraz and Viognier, with both grapes being picked together and subjected to a very short skin exposure period. The wine presents a dry yet fresh flavour. The Mill Iron is one of Opstal’s iconic wines and consists of a combination of Hanepoot, Viognier and Columbar grapes. The wine begins with a floral aroma and delivers a deliciously sweet taste thanks to the added Muscat. Candy and fruit can be detected on the palette of the estate’s flagship red – a Cabernet Sauvignon that offers a good woody finish. The Chardonnay Barrel dessert wine is quite a special

he Slanghoek Valley is one of the Western Cape’s best kept secrets. Within this valley lie three of the best wineries that I have ever visited. The area was owned in 1847 by a farmer who divided his land amongst his children, who later became winemakers and farmers of produce such as olives and peaches. Today the winemakers of Slanghoek are of the 6th and 7th generations of a proud winemaking heritage. Young and dynamic, the new pioneers are celebrating their vines in the most creative of ways. Our journey through the valley began at Opstal Estate with Attie Louw, a particularly young and inspired winemaker. We were introduced to the inner infrastructure and workings of the winery, tasting a delicious semi-

friendly Sakkie du Toit, who invited us into his bakkie and took us on an adventure ride filled with the refreshing sights and smells of the mountains and valley below. We were then shown the general resort area and its facilities, which include a putt-putt course, marked hiking trails, a swimming pool and outdoor culinary eqipment. Our cabin on the dam was beautifully positioned and surprisingly luxurious, considering the fact that we were warned about the lack of electricity in the wonderfully isolated wilderness area. The solar energy systems in fact provide enough light and warmth for optimal comfort. Not that we spent much time inside. The best feature of the cabins is the spectacular view from the deck and the gift of absolute serenity that it offers. A first for me was the wine blending experience in which we partook at Slanghoek Winery the following morning. We were lucky enough to enjoy the experience under the sound guidance of Pieter Carstens, Cellarmaster of the valley’s flagship winery. We blended ratios of fruity Pinotage, spicy Shiraz and earthy Cabertnet Sauvignon. My final blend was a deep red, complex wine with fruit and floral notes and a very dry finish. The Vinay, the winery’s award-winning salmon-pink rosé with soft fruit and floral aromas and a lingering berry taste, enchanted us immediately. The Slanghoek Cabernet Sauvignon is a passionate, fullbodied red that delivers earthy and woody aromas and dry, spicy flavours that pair excellently with red meat. It came as no surprise to learn that the wine has won a Silver Michelangelo and a Bronze Veritas Award. Slanghoek Winery’s Shiraz, with its spicy peppercorn aroma and striking berry flavour, was reccommended in Wine Magazine’s Best Value Guide in 2011. All that being said, it was the estate’s Chenin that finally won me over, casting a golden hue over the already magical Slanghoek Valley.
one for me, fortified with a three-year-old brandy that definitely delivers a pungent spicy aroma and a rich sweet flavour that would beautifully finish any meal. Our next stop was Jason’s Hill Private Wine Cellar, where we met the acclaimed Ivy Du Toit, who won the Diners Club Young Winemaker of the Year and the South African Woman’s Winemaker of the Year awards at an impressively young age. Jason’s Hill is also a 6th generation family-run farm rich in heritage, and Ivy was evidently still filled with pride when she shared the farm’s flagship Sauvignon Blanc with us. The Sauvignon commences with a tropical fruit aroma and delivers a crisp, garden-fresh taste and a well-balanced ending, perfect for summer and a great partner for a Waldorf salad. Jason’s Hill’s striking berry-coloured Pinotage was matured in French Oak for ten months and delivers notes of strawberry on the nose and a pleasantly dry, woody taste on the palate. The incredibly spicy, rich and complex wine with its vibrant colour and deep flavours pairs wonderfully with red meat and is an ideal winter drink. Lunch at Jason’s Hill restaurant provided the perfect balance between fine dining and homely comfort. We had the pleasure of meeting Maritza Cilliers, the immensely talented young chef with a natural instinct for flavour and texture. The lunch menu is rather extensive, offering springbok carpaccio and waterblommetjie bredie as main course favourites. Our culinary journey saw us enjoy a crunchy Waldorf salad, a flavoursome pizza and a hearty pasta dish. I really believe that dessert can make or break a dining experience and was truly impressed by the fresh, crumbly custard danishes and homemade ice-cream with which we were presented. What followed was unexpected but electrifying. We made our way to Slanghoek Mountain Resort, where we were to spend the night. On arrival we were greeted by the 30

H
istory and beauty are cultivated among the fine vines of Freedom Hill Winery in Paarl. The southern slopes of the Wemmershoek Mountain offered a kaleidoscope of red and yellow vines against ochre rocks on the balmy Autumn afternoon on which we visited the farm. The vineyards overlook Victor Verster Prison, from which former South African President Nelson Mandela began his long journey to freedom. Although renowned for its breathtaking landscape and unique wedding offering, the heart of Noble Hill will always be its award-winning wine. Freedom Hill’s 2011 Chenin Blanc won a prestigious Silver Veritas Award for 2012. The 2010 Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2010 Shiraz Cellar Selection and the 2009 Pinotage all won Bronze in the Veritas Awards. The 2007 Shiraz achieved 3,5 stars in John Platter’s Guide as well as a Silver Veritas Award. The 2010 export quality Freedom Walk wooded Chardonnay was awarded a Gold Veritas Award. Only about 6000 cases of wine are produced on the farm each year – a fact that is evidenced in the exquisite attention to detail and unique ‘story’ of each wine. That being said, it was the food we were interested in during our visit to the farm. We were treated to a menu prepared by Chef Renette Vosloo (of The Red Tomato) as part of Freedom Hill’s regular Sunday Feasts. Although Renette joked about being “Mrs Duck”, the richness of her Sunday roast is no laughing matter. Each delicious morsel of her creations, from the bread she kneads and bakes herself to the decadent dessert, was a pleasure to behold and enjoy. Chef Renette was one of Pretoria’s finest cooks but just couldn’t resist eventually moving her kitchen to the fairest Cape. The Freedom Hill Chenin Blanc proved the perfect
accompaniment to Chef Renette’s silky three vegetable soup. Her wouth-watering jasmine coconut rice provided a fine foundation for her flavourful Sunday menu of pork and apple braise with humble but delicious mushy mint peas. My lunch partner and editor, Lara, is a vegetarian who allowed herself to hail the meal as “a real Sunday roast”. Much of what makes Freedom Hill so exceptional is its ability to make guests feel right at home. Chanine Klomp, daughter of owner Francois Klomp and Chief Executive Officer of the estate, afforded us personal attention in the tasting room after lunch. The room is a warm, cosy space that boasts a fireplace and overlooks some of the best views that span between Franshoek and Paarl. Chanine proudly shared Freedom Hill’s excellent wines with us and then lead us to ‘The Chapel’. A Grecian amphitheatre is what they have created from a hollowed-out dam on the farm. Brides and grooms are invited to say their vows in this unique setting before taking their first steps as man and wife on the red-brown earth of Freedom Hill. The view from the chapel and the veranda is almost as breath-taking as the interior function room, where we enjoyed our lunch. Glass double doors lead guests into an 80-seater space with beautifully set rectangular tables, white Tiffany Chairs, hanging chandeliers and a spiral staircase. It was the Owner’s wife, Adila Klomp, who named the farm Freedom Hill. Rouxnette Roberts, Freedom Hill’s Event Manager, told us that Adila wanted the farm’s name to have special meaning when they first fell in love with the land in 1997. Francois Klomp describes himself as a ‘purist’ – a trait that can be seen in the quality of his wine, his food and his land. For more information on Freedom Hill’s Sunday Feasts, call +27 21 867 0085, e-mail info@freedomhill.co.za or visit www.freedomhill.co.za. 38

Riebeek Valley is about to become the happiest place on Earth. Wedding venues, event designers, photographers, florists, caterers, accommodation establishments and some of the best food and wine experiences have all found a home in the valley. Destination weddings have become the experience of choice for brides around the world. Weddings should be weekend-long experiences – it is after all the African way. Another exquisite wedding venue in the area is Bartholomeus Klip Guest Farm, which sleeps up to sixteen guests in a luxurious country setting. Several other farms in the area have created bed and breakfast and guesthouse suites specifically for wedding guests. These include Delsma Farm, which sleeps up to 43 guests, and Hermon Guesthouse, which sleeps 24 guests. There is also, of course, the valley’s famous Royal Hotel, which has been rated one of the 50 most fabulous places to visit in South Africa. The valley also plays host to Calamata Health and Beauty Spa, which specialises in bridal hair and make-up and bridal group spa packages. Offering everything necessary to create an enchanting and holistic wedding experience, the Riebeek Valley really can be the happiest place on Earth.

fairylight-adorned bluegum forest serves as ‘chapel’ while a regal function room boasts decadent and generous wedding feasts. Danie Malan, Allesverloren’s current owner and chief winemaker, is as warm as the roaring fires that cast a magical glow over winter weddings on his estate. In 1989, Danie’s late father, Fanie Malan, cultivated the Allesverloren Shiraz, which was the only South African wine to win one of only 20 trophies awarded to winemakers from 21 countries at the Vinexpo in Bordeaux. Prestige, family, history, award-winning wines and beautiful weddings are as abundant as the grapes on the vines at Allesverloren. Maridene De Wet, owner of Rapple Events Management, believes of the Riebeek Valley that there is “no place on Earth quite like it”. Maridene works in and around Cape Town, facilitating exclusive film screenings for Hollywood directors, organising large corporate events and designing bespoke special events for high-profile clients. Maridene told the Ultimate Guide to Africa: “I always wanted to do something with my life that would make me happy and make my clients happy – and there is no happier person on Earth than a bride.” The launch of theweddingvalley.co.za means that the

very chic grey, white and glass surface of the hotel suggests that it was designed with simple luxury and soul restoration in mind. From the Graham Beck Brut MCC glasses we were handed upon arrival to the way the morning air rose above the heated swimming pools during breakfast, each detail at The Robertson Small Hotel provided its own bit of magic. Robertson is situated along Route 62, the longest wine route in the world. Whether guests are looking for a place to rest during a long road trip or a discreet and quiet hideaway destination in wine country, the team at The Robertson Small offer the perfect ‘do not disturb’ getaway.
The Robertson Small Hotel is currently offering its guests (of two nights or more) a selection of Savoury Safaris to enjoy in Robertson and surrounds. Our ‘safari’ began with a bottle and blend experience at Excelsior Wine Farm. The De Wet family has been making wine at Excelsior since 1859, and the fifth generation was proud to share a small part of this experience with us. In an intimate tasting room on the dam, we were granted the opportunity to taste, measure and blend our own Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz creations. The farm is a popular wedding destination, and couples often create their own blends for the occasion. We paired the experience with a cheese and biltong 46

Executive Chef Tiaan van Greunen and his team create hearty and memorable feasts at the stylish venue. The presentation and aroma of my partner’s vegetable lasagne was almost as mouth-watering as the taste of my braised port oxtail potjie. Somehow our table managed to bear the weight of the generous offerings of good food, wine, laughter, fragrant flowers and flickering candles we enjoyed late into the night. We decided to devour our dessert in the comfort of our suite, where we could disappear into our ultracomfortable bed and our ultra-tasty treats at once. The turn-down service had transformed our luxurious room into sleep-time utopia, with a sweet poem and bite-sized treats awaiting us on our pillows. My apple pie with candied pecan nuts, ginger froth and beetroot ice-cream paired with a decadent cappuccino sent me straight to sleep in the best possible way. The next morning we awoke to a new kind of Sunday morning - the kind of Sunday morning that begins with a lavender-scented rain-shower and poolside read and ends with a walk through perfectly manicured gardens and a breakfast fit for a queen. Out breakfast included freshly-squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, eggs benedict, French toast, sweet crunchy muesli, creamy yoghurt and peppermint tea. It was difficult to say goodbye to The Robertson Small Hotel, and we were grateful for the welcome distraction of the spectacular scenery along the route back to Cape Town. platter and spent some time afterwards simply taking in the scenery and serenity of the farm. The impeccable grounds were once used to breed champion thoroughbred horses, and as Excelsior’s Purebred Red (a marvellous blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Paddock Shiraz) indicates, champion land produces not only champion horses but champion wine. As a vegetarian and viticultural enthusiast, my partner has a supreme nose for good cheese and a particularly fine palate for wine. The next stop on our safari was Viljoensdrift Wine Estate, where we enjoyed a picnic and boat cruise on the beautiful river. Our picnic basket (which we enjoyed on the cruise) was filled to the brim with marvellous treats. We sipped on the estate’s refreshing Villion Blanc de Blanc MCC whilst enjoying a hearty butternut soup, ciabatta with smoked snoek pate, Dalewood camembert, sweet and sour pepper jam, a selection of cold meats and delicious koeksisters, traditional syrup-drenched South African sweet treats. The short journey from Viljoensdrift to The Robertson Small Hotel was dotted with lush gardens, roadside knickknacks and some of the best views that wine country has to offer. Exhausted from the thrills and spills of the day, we were welcomed to our exquisite luxury suite at the hotel with popcorn and a DVD – the perfect pair to see two weary travellers through to dinner. Before we knew it, it was time for pre-dinner cocktails and canapés at the hotel’s chic bar. Reuben’s Restaurant at The Robertson Small Hotel is one of only a few establishments run under the helm of famous South African concept chef Reuben Riffel. Following his example, 48

ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
