hatever your crest or creed, the end of the year is no doubt a time of celebration and recreation for you and your family. While The Ultimate Guide to Africa is all about celebrating the best of our land and its people, we close off our year on a particularly jubilant note. There are few better ways to celebrate than with a loved one, and this month we take you along the scenic Route 62 to the romantic little village of Montagu, where you can wine, dine and recline in a charmingly original and memorable setting. We introduce the ladies to the timeless Majestic Spa and the gentlemen to the challenging Pebble Rock Golf Course. We marvel at the architecture

We even learn the spiritual value of surfing and are introduced to the secret goings-on of game lodge staff. A stay at the luxurious Grande Roche Hotel is the pinnacle of our celebration, and we hope that you too can one day enjoy its seamless fusion of history and modernity complemented by its uncompromising service excellence. For now, though – sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!

Oude Werf Hotel in Stellenbosch is inviting guests to experience its new look after an extensive renovation and refurbishment that saw this cultural and historic gem restored to its former glory – with a few exciting modern touches. Elanie Fourie, general manager of Oude Werf, says the process resulted in a truly unique property in the heart of the Cape Winelands and that it was challenging to modernise South Africa’s oldest inn without losing its old world appeal. Oude Werf is built on the yard of South Africa’s very first church, commissioned by then-governor Simon van der Stel in 1686. A fire destroyed the original building, but in 1802 an inn was opened on the same site and over the years evolved into what is now a National Monument. The exterior façade has been restored, ten rooms were refurbished with 12 new rooms being added and nine new bedrooms were created within the Meiring Building. onstantia Glen is a magnificently appointed boutique wine estate on the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg that offers sweeping panoramic views and some of the finest wine tasting experiences just 20 minutes from the Cape Town city center. With a proud history of winemaking that dates back to 1685, the estate is known above all for its cool climate Sauvignon Blancs and Bordeaux-style reds. The cool climate and altitude of the location close to the sea are Constantia Glen’s richest assets. Complex soil patterns also shape the character and style of the fine and distinctive wines. The cool climate allows for a moderate increase in sugar levels during the ripening phase, which facilitates the even ripening of the tannic structure in the grapes without incurring the debt of sugar levels that are too high at optimum ripeness. This offers a better chance at achieving lower alcohol levels in wine with perfectly ripe tannins. The enviable position between Constantiaberg and Table Mountain offers an incredible bonus to the vineyards planted at Constantia Glen. When the summer sun sets in the west, the Constantiaberg casts its omnipresent shadow over the fertile Constantia Valley. Constantia Nek offers the only respite to the otherwise obscured sun and allows for additional sunlight onto the vineyards of Constantia Glen. This extra sunlight allows for the successful and consistent ripening of classic red grape varieties in a cool climate and determines the planting ratio in favor of red varieties. Thirty percent of the Constantia Glen farm is planted to Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and the rest to the five classic Bordeaux varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Each vintage-grown, vinified and bottled wine from Constantia Glen shows a clear “fingerprint of its unique terroir, of which winemaker Justin van Wyk takes full advantage in his creation of balanced, elegant wines with remarkable character. Constantia Glen welcomes wine lovers to taste and buy their wines straight from the cellar door. For more information visit www.constantiaglen.com.

nlike many others in her position, owner Lesley still works hands-on in the spa. She believes in catering for each client as one would for a highly anticipated guest, allowing sufficient time and energy for each individual to feel completely welcome and important. I certainly feel the benefits of this approach as a gentle therapist with surprisingly strong hands washes my hair and feet at the fire, commenting all the while on my beauty and grace. I reluctantly leave the warmth of the fire and proceed to a treatment room, in which I am treated to a firm, releasing full body massage. As I emerge feeling pampered and relieved, I am delighted to find a delicious lunch from Kalk Bay’s famous Olympia Café waiting for me. After enjoying my meal, I am treated to a spa manicure and pedicure done by Lesley herself. She is a selfadmitted perfectionist and the vibrant color on my nails and toenails is applied immaculately. It was hard to choose the colors, as the spa offers a comprehensive selection of the season’s best. I am interrupted by a request for a Skype meeting from the office, and am quite amazed at how accommodating Lesley and her staff are about the inconvenience. I conduct my business in the comfortable reception area while my therapists patiently wait for me to finish before beginning my facial. While I assumed Lesley’s specialization to be in nail care, she surprises me with the best facial I have experienced all year. My skin feels soft, looks clear and smells incredible after the treatment, which she concludes with an other-worldly facial massage whilst another therapist massages my feet. I leave massaged from top to toe with beautiful nails, a glowing complexion and words of wisdom from the exceptional women who make the spa the haven that it is. I would highly recommend a visit to the Majestic Spa as a priority for any traveler to the charming sleepy seaside village of Kalk Bay. Or for anyone in the Cape Peninsula, for that matter. passion for winemaking is palpable, he does not conceal the fact that the industry undergoes times of frenzy and hysteria (particularly during harvest time, of course). Because each year’s categories are released within a limited timeframe, all winemakers who wish to compete in the Diners Club competition are encouraged to rise to the occasion and produce exceptional cellars of wine each year without necessarily knowing which barrel might be selected for review. In this way, Diners Club plays out its commitment to encouraging South African estates to produce sophisticated, world-class wines of an excellent quality at any given time. I was privileged to be seated beside Francois Bezuidenhout of Man Vintners Wine Estate (Stellenbosch) at the glittering dinner table. As a finalist in this year’s Young Winemaker of the Year competition, Francois admitted that “winemakers work in a highly competitive environment - not just locally, but internationally” and that “you always have to be on top of your game” to succeed in the industry. Another finalist in this category, Nico Grobler of Eikendal Vineyards, believes that winemakers are charged with the task of showing what each piece of vine-growing South African land is capable of producing. With the privilege of the Helderberg mountain as backdrop to his vineyards, Nico believes

oung winemakers enjoy the privilege of the tutelage of their predecessors, whose knowledge and love of the land has yielded barrels and bottles that attest to their years of dedication. Young winemakers, like their wines, have years of maturation ahead of them before they are able to catch up to the exeprtise and pansophy of their predecessors. Or so it is believed. Diners Club recognises South Africa’s greatest young winemakers, celebrating them this year at an opulent yet tasteful event at the spectacular Conservatory in Franschhoek (where a cellist in a glass globe and chandeliers sparkling down from the tops of trees were not even enough to distract from the award-winning wines and culinary creations on offer). This year’s Diners Club International Young Winemaker of the Year Award was won by Anri Truter of Beyerskloof Wine Farm in Stellenbosch. The esteemed panel of judges was ‘thoroughly pleased’ with all the finalists in this year’s competition, boasting that the top bottles in the red wine category were all of different varietals - a testament to South Africa’s dynamic industry. As with all things exceptional, there was one particular wine that really stood out and Anri was fortunate enough to take home the coveted prize. A softly-spoken, almost awkward young man, Anri delievered an honest and humble note of thanks for the award. Although his

that it is his vocation to show what the Helderberg can produce. According to Nico, “It is the land that separates one winemaker’s gift from another”. The other talented finalists in the category listed intuition, time, humility and a thirst (pardon the pun) for knowledge among the necessities of making prize-winning wine. Truter, Bezuidenhout and Grobler were joined by Peter de Wet (De Wetshof Estate), Charles Williams (De Toren Private Cellar) and Stuart Botha (Eagles Nest, Constantia) in the elite and talented group of finalists. Young Truter’s legacy stood him in great stead as his father, Beyers Truter, was the winner of the Winemaker of the Year Award in 1997 for one of his family wine estate’s wines (Kanonkop Pinotage). Anri’s lifetime of work in cellars and vineyards on his family’s estate as well as around the world culminated in his creation of a wine that is rich, present and a splendor to behold – the Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage 2010. On the label of the prize-winning bottle, Beyers relates a heart-warming message about the family dog, Diesel: “Diesel was more than a dog. He was my pal. One of those true friends who loves you despite your faults; who listens patiently to stories of sadness and shares tail-wagging moments of happiness. He never barked back or lifted a
critical ear. He was undoubtedly my best friend.” Wine is created with both the vigour of youth and the wisdom of age, and the second award of the evening was reserved for the 2012 Winemaker of the Year. Finalists in the highly competitive category included Adele Swart (Rudera Cellar), Marc Kent (Boekenhoutskloof Winery), Pieter Badenhorst (Bergkelder) and Razvan Macici (Nederberg Wines). While the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year Awards have been running for 32 spectacular years, this year’s winner has spent his entire life in the vineyards. After passing his formative years in the cellars of his native Romania, Ravzan Macici travelled to the fairest Cape to reap the full rewards of his talent and experience. The category for this year’s Winemaker of the Year awards was (for the first time) dessert wine, and Macici won for his magical Private Bin Eminence 2007. The flight of dessert wines that the judging panel tasted included 64 wines from some of South Africa’s most famous and less renowned wine producers. Celebrity Chef Pete Goffe-Wood created a menu that perfectly complemented the award-winning wines, which were brought to him “under cloak and dagger”. Offereins is an award winner herself, having been recognised by US Banker magazine as one of the Top 25 Women in Finance for four consecutive years (2008 – 2011). Former Springbok player and media personality Bob Skinstad lead the evening’s festivities as a most entertaining MC. A chauffeur transfer by a dapper young gentleman in top hat and tails took us to our home for the night – Franschhoek’s immaculate L’Ermitage Chateaux & Villas. There is water to the right and left of the fairway on the 1st tee, so a straight drive will work best on this dogleg right par 4. The green is also protected by water on the right and sand traps on the left.

green. If your approach shot lands to the top part of this green with a lot of spin, your ball will dribble down very slowly to the front of the green, leaving you with a not so regulation 2 putt. When faced with the situation of a fairway being split into two parts by a water hazard, an accurate drive is required to keep your ball dry. The 16th is one of these situations. The green is well protected on both sides with sand traps, so a well-placed approach shot is needed. Ending your round with a par 5 is always welcome because you may just end with an even score. The 18th is a short par 5, but well placed trees in the landing area of your tee shot makes this an interesting hole. Long hitters may also go for the large green with their second shot but keep in mind that it slopes from the back to the front. Difficult greens and narrow, rolling fairways make Pebble Rock an enjoyable challenge for high handicapped golfers but remains a must-play for golfers at any level. Be sure to take enough balls with you though because the bushveld surroundings will keep you busy should you need to search for an errand shot. From the back tee position the par 3, 4th hole, plays in just under 200 meters. It is a straight hole with a small water hazard located just before the green. The green is also protected by a clover-shaped sand trap on the right, which will catch any wayward shot. The most difficult hole at Pebble Rock is the par 4, stroke 1 6th. It is split into two parts and you need to play a long iron on the first part, over the massive water hazard to hit the fairway. From there the second uphill part of this hole starts. If your first shot was successful, you will still have about 150 meters between you and the difficult, fast green. Hitting a high, soft landing shot close to the hole will help. You do not want to end up at the top part of this green because of its down slope to the hole. If you miss with the downhill putt, your ball will definitely end up a long way from the hole. The second 9 at Pebble Rock starts with a long, downhill par 5. At just over 540 meters, you will need accurate shots to reach the green in regulation with marsh areas all around the approach to this green. The 12th is a relatively short, uphill par 4 at 321 meters. Long hitters might be able to get the ball on the green with the tee shot and once you get there a layup shot is recommended to compensate for this fast and difficult

he people at Waterkloof do not let the strong winds of the area deter their viticultural pursuits, and one of their top ranges is in fact called Circumstance in honor of the fine wine the estate produces in spite of the circumstances. Their Circle of Life range reflects the broad ecological biodiversity of the area and their Peacock wines are so named in honor of their resident peacock population. Chef Czarnecki presents an evolving repertoire of unique and refined dishes to complement the estate’s award-winning wines, and we are lucky enough to spend a Sunday afternoon sampling some of his delights. We are seated at a table with an incredible view of the vineyards, mountains and beaches of the area. A gentle and impeccably polite host from Malawi pours us our first glasses of Circumstance, which we savor along with Chef Czarnecki’s parsnip truffle verlouttes with parmesan crumbs. Although it is easy to fall into a hedonistic oblivion at times like these, we try to contemplate the full extent of
Edward Young’s assertion (sported on the label of the wine bottle, of course) that “Who does best that circumstances allow, acts nobly” and that “angels could do no more”. Well, we had found our angel in the form of a French chef and our heaven tasted of Syrah, Viognier and verlouttes. After being reminded by the parmesan crumbs that the god of cheese is still alive and well, I order a camembert crème brulée served with curried walnuts and celery sorbet. I am not sure which was a more astounding taste – that of the cheese crème brulée or the vegetable sorbet. My partner enjoys the Oak Valley beef crepinette, the semi-traditional Western Cape dish recommended by the angel himself. Chef Czarnecki was raised and trained in France and has lived in several other countries but decided to return to South Africa after visiting some years ago. He was enchanted, of course, by a combination of the breathtaking natural beauty of the estate and the availability of fresh, local ingredients in the area. Czarnecki hopes to one day produce an entire menu 35

based on the farm’s natural biodiversity. The winemaking team at Waterkloof is similarly ambitious, having found the perfect vineyard site (after ten years of searching) for producing ‘truly fine wines with a real sense of place’. A main course of the most originally prepared root vegetables, monkfish and crispy prawn served with ginger beer compressed apples keeps us busy for the next hour or so while our waiter digs around in the cellar for perfect wines to complement our dessert (a feast in itself). The 2011 Peacock Ridge Shiraz perfectly complements the other-worldly pre-dessert (of course there is such a thing at Waterkloof) of custard, honeycomb and crumbed chocolate cake. Although my chestnut vacherin with Mont Blanc and Amarula marshmallow is spectacular, my inner fat kid asks for a second portion of dessert just to rival the offering being enjoyed by my partner (the Death by Varlhona chocolate and passion fruit dessert). Although the entire meal is exceptionally put together, I would travel to Somerset West again any day just for those chocolate wheels and passion fruit lollipops. What a treat. sk a man who has enjoyed a season at Muizenberg what he considers its greatest attraction to be and, after due reflection, he will reply: “the surf bathing”. It is – with the surfboards – a practically new sport so far as South Africa is concerned; but it has gripped everybody who has tried it. The wild exhilaration is infectious. In the Pacific the islanders have made it an art. At the Cape it has become a cult. All classes of the community - men, women and children enjoy its exhilarating pleasures in hundreds day after day. The excerpt above is from The Cape Peninsula Publicity Association brochure of 1918. In his wonderful book Muizenberg – a forgotten story, Michael Walker further elaborates on the popularity and benefits of surfing at Cape Town’s Muizenberg Beach: Muizenberg is peculiarly adapted for the sport. The beach is beautifully clean and possesses the great advantage of a very gentle slope, so that the bather may wade out a long way before being immersed to the shoulders. The sand is firm, and there is a complete absence of danger from strong undercurrents and back-washes - factors in bathing that have cost many people their lives on the South African coasts. Anybody can become a proficient surfer, of whatever sex or age. It is no infrequent sight to see a couple of hundred men, women and children jumping and hurtling through the surf at Muizenberg. And the crowd gathered on the sands enjoys the sport as much as the enthusiast in the water does. To see it done is to wish to do it, and Muizenberg is the place at which to do it best. But surf bathing is not only to be looked upon as a sport. It has a definite and beneficial effect upon the health of the jaded man and woman. The bathing alone is healthy as any physician will tell you, but surfing is doubly so. The exhilaration and excitement forbids worry and thought, other than how to go faster and gain greater pleasure. It steadies the nerves, exercises the muscles, and makes the enthusiast clear headed and clear eyed. Life and good spirits are the outstanding and dominant qualities of the surf bather. Keen to untap the wholesome exhiliration of the sport, I decide to book an individual beginner lesson at Gary’s Surf School in Muizenberg. Established in 1989, the school is the oldest of its kind in South Africa. A jovial chap answers my call with “This is Gary from the best surf school – why aren’t you on the beach?” and before I know it I am hanging out with Gary and his experienced surf instructors at the beachside ‘school’. The place is buzzing with activity and overflowing with surfers, and I try not to look at a pair of striking German ladies stripping down in the common area (apparently there is no time to wait for a changing room when the surf is calling). Gary throws a bottle of sunblock at them, warning that “blondies” should take extra care in the scorching South

African sun. I view the gesture as an attempt at flirting until I realise that Gary is just one of those rare individuals who is unapologetically friendly and helpful. After marvelling at the over 100 surfboards on offer for rent and purchase, I am introduced to my instructor for the day by way of Gary teasing him about checking out my bum and threatening to take a weedeater to his impressive Afro. Nobody can tease this guy in the surf, though, and after being warned to keep my wetsuit zipped up (“you don’t want your boobs to get cold”) and not to leave anything on the beach (“they’ll steal your underpants off your ass”), I am lead out to the beach to discover why my tutor is referred to as “the man who walks on water”. After much initial apprehension, I am relieved to discover that there are really only three things to remember when attempting to surf for the first time: where to lie on the board, which foot to lift and what not to do with your knees. It only takes a short while for me to realise why kids between the ages of four and 71 have been flocking to Gary’s Surf School for so many years. As Gary himself confidently asserts: “If we don’t get you hooked, nobody will”. When I catch my first wave (on my third attempt, might I add), the words of Cormac McCarthy sunndenly ring true to me for the first time: Survival out here is always a question of balance. The principle is expressed in the equation “Nature = God”, as carved into the sandstone above Malibu by Tom Blake, who enlivened the essential surfer’s philosophy of respect - for others, for history, for the power of nature. He understood that it was all nature. As well as giving individual and group lessons and renting and selling boards, Gary also fixes boards and sells his own line of wet suits, t-shirts and rash vests (African Rhythm). He also runs the non-profit Extreme Surf School, which takes children out of extreme situations and trains them to provincial and national championship levels. The dynamic and energetic surf master also runs Butterfly Way Education, a free daycare centre for children from underprivileged families. walked past bustling side-street cafes and arts and crafts shops. On our journey, we enjoyed a cappucino and fresh apple crumble tart in a local art gallery/coffee shop, in which most of the patrons were in town for a wedding in the romantic village. Another lovely store we visited sells farm-made soaps, candles and lotions that smell like pure vanilla and lavender. The latter won a local tourism award as it also features a store that sells vintage clothing and accessories as well as arts and crafts that are unique and marvellous. Once we finally arrived at the craft market, we met wonderful people who make everything from jam to “Granny’s homemade biscuits” and other fresh, locally grown and homemade produce as well as delightful arts and crafts products. Montagu Country Hotel offers great rates and the hotel’s 33 rooms can be booked for an entire weekend at an even more reasonable rate. The staff are very accommodating and even offer to redesign the seating throughout the dining rooms and gardens to suit the needs of a visiting group. The restaurant’s chef, who formerly worked in Sandton, Johannesburg’s financial hub, prefers his position in the tranquil setting and prepares a hearty and classic menu that he is also willing to redesign for weddings, conferences and large events. His menu boasts a great list of local wines, including Bon Courage Blush!, a splendid local sparkling wine made with local Moscato grapes that we paired with our meal one evening. The Blush! went splendidly with every course, tasting wonderful

ontagu is one of the destinations along Route 62, a scenic route through South Africa’s Western Cape that meanders between Worcester and Oudtshoorn and has been fashioned after America’s famous Route 66. Known as the gateway to the Karoo, the journey to Montagu takes us on a journey through South Africa’s longest wine route. At the heart of the charming village of Montagu lies the Montagu Country Hotel. The hotel boasts a beautiful garden filled with roses and lush greenery. In the evening and early morning, the garden’s lights sparkle over the heated pool. Although Montagu is famous for its rose gardens in October, the village, with its vineyards, beautiful red-rock mountains, hot springs and animated community, are something to behold throughout the year. On arrival at the hotel, we were shown two rooms - one with a private rose garden and another that featured a spacious jet-spa bath. The decision was tricky but the staff were most patient and gracious. Although the entire atmosphere at the hotel and throughout the village is one of wellness and serenity, a tranquil Wellness Spa is also on offer to hotel guests. The Montagu Country hotel is decorated in a timeless art deco fashion. The manager of the hotel is a qualified architect and helped to redesign the hotel. On our first Saturday morning in the village, we made our way to the famous Montagu Market, which is within walking distance from the hotel. Along the way, the town’s people smiled and greeted us with warmth as we

with everything from potatoes, pear and blue cheese salad to chicken and traditional South African malva pudding dessert. Breakfasts at the hotel are also a hearty treat, as each morning we were served a large country feast that featured fresh fruit, yoghurt and heaping plates of hot bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes, mushroom and toast. Most of the food is sourced either in Montagu, the Karoo or the Robertson Valley. We were fortunate enough to visit the area during Robertson’s Wine on the River Weekend. The wine festival featured boat trips, olive and wine pairings and the best wines of the region. We spotted a stand that featured Marbin Olive Growers, a small, family-run boutique olive farm that shared some delicious tapenade and olive oil with us. We also tasted sushi made by a local eco-community and were pleased to see some of the Cape’s most famous wines serving tastings. Pierre de Klerk, Graham Beck Wine’s Robertson winemaker, paired their Bliss MCC with their own delicious milk chocolate. His girlfriend Julie is from Champagne, France, and she toasted to his amazing sparkling wine, which she hails as better than the wine back home in Champange. We also spotted Bon Courage, and like all things ‘good’ we enjoyed their Blanc de Clanc 2008 Chardonnay made by Jacques Bruere, which was just as lovely as the Blush! that we had enjoyed at dinner the previous night. Roodezant Wines make wines in the same delicious fashion that the Robertson Wine Valley has traditionally always made them, as Robertson used to be called Roodezant until the late 1800’s. We also tasted less famous wines that were just as delicious and difficult to forget. A lovely addition to the festival was the food and wine pairing tent. It was both educational and a joy to the palate and featured some splendid award-winning wines paired with sublimely made dishes. One couple from Austria and Australia told me that the Maxim Chardonnay (2011) of Goedverwacht is the closest they had ever tasted to a French Chardonnay. The wine, along with six others in its class, was paired with a spicy course of ‘bobotie frikkadel and chardanon infused egg custard’. My favourite pairing was the MCC/Blanc de Blanc Cap Classique. The organisers served ‘buttermilk pancake with a chicken and dried fruit filling’. They served Villian’s Blanc de Blanc and Phillip Jonker’s Brut ‘The Ring’ (of Weltevrede wines) MCC. Jonker describes The Ring as a constant reminder of his bond with his wife Lindelize, and it is fitting that we first experience the wine in the region of romance. Route 62 is filled with beautiful stories and luxuriously easy expeiences. The memories that you make as you embark on this journey will last a lifetime. I hope that when you stay at Montagu Country Hotel, you are just as charmed by the bubbles in the wine and in the bath as the smiles on the faces of all who greet you. May you make many of your own memories on your ‘journey to the unexpected’. 44

He has a temper so vicious that his lodge roommate (who he describes as a gormless creature with the bathroom habits of an ill-educated ape) finds it necessary to enquire whether, if pushed too far, he is capable of murder. Unfortunately for Angus, his lowly position as Trainee Ranger at the lodge equates largely to that of Dogsbody for a significant part of his time there. The fact that his living quarters for the duration of the year consist of a guano-covered bat cave that even Hugh admits would make their standard six dormitory look like something out of a Leading Hotels of the World catalogue does not make

ames Hendry’s comic masterpiece, ‘A Year in the Wild’, is for anyone who has been in the African bush, the hospitality industry or even in South Africa, for that matter. It’s for anyone who understands the idiosyncrasies of South Africa’s people, animals and situations and appreciates the roll-in-the-veld comedy that they are capable of producing. The novel (rightly dubbed as ‘riotous’) consists of a series of weekly e-mails from Angus and Hugh Macnaughton that trace their lives over the course of a year at Seasekile Private Game Reserve, a five-star establishment in the north-eastern Lowveld of South Africa, to their beloved sister Julia. The fact that Angus and Hugh are related by blood is

highly-experienced 120kg silent tracker. And then, of course, there is the husky, feline Camp Manager Anna with her deep cocoa hair, black eyes and upper-class English accent that make her, in Angus’s eyes, an obscenely sexy Tolkienesque witch. The diversity in character, culture, upbringing, religion and political standpoint of the lodge guests also leaves Angus exasperated and Hugh consequently amused. From drunken Indians to New York honeymoon couples, Texan geriatrics, a Victoria’s Secret model and ‘the rudest children on earth’, the guests at the lodge often pair ‘about as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and hake fillets’. Hugh and Angus deal quite differently with husbands who believe that they are the globe’s next great wildlife photographers, wives slathered with enough sun cream to render them comparable to yetis, Americans not impressed with lions because they are smaller than bears and Type A ‘Chermans’ who ask questions like ‘Vhy zey (ze lions) not killing somesing?’ on games drives. The most memorable visiting family, though, must be the unit comprising the senile 250-year-old Major Walter (who hangs out naked on his patio shooting wildly at imaginary Bolshevik agitators) and the lusty 16-year-old granddaughter who smells ‘like the depths of a Turkish brothel’ and takes an inappropriate interest in the (everdisgusted) Angus. Although the Macnaughton brothers are spoilt with the breathtaking spaces of the open veld, the meandering Tsessebe River and a series of spectacular wildlife encounters, they also have to deal with things like ironing demonstrations, bee invasions, loo cleaning, fist fights over bird identifications, near-death encounters with ‘puppies’ (elephants) and ‘gonnies’ (lions), a chef with the temper of a musth bull elephant, baboon raids, bush fires that make tinder-boxes look like wet sponges and other such ‘small, littley problems’. And somehow,
matters any better for him. Hugh, on the other hand, is a tall, blond, jovial and extroverted 22-year-old cum laude hotel school graduate who has clinched the position of Assistant Camp Manager at the lodge. While Hugh views his ‘year in the middle of nowhere’ as an opportunity for him to gain some useful skills and experience for his future, Angus laments the fact that he has to endure a year in the presence of his brother’s ‘legendary lodge friends’ – a collection of ‘creatures’ that he believes would make the thieving macaques of Gibraltor recoil in horror. Of these individuals, Angus’s greatest nemesis is the Head Ranger Anton Muller – a six-foot-five provincial rugby player with biceps the size of Namibia and what Angus believes to be ‘the ego of Alexander the Great’ and ‘the brain of a dung beetle’. According to Anton, the original inhabitants of the Sasekile land used to copulate with female lions before skinning them for their coats and then eating their meat. Another fellow staff member who Angus finds to be quite unbearable is Camp Manager Melissa, a ditsy redhead with very few social graces and a lisp so severe that she could wash a car by standing in front of it and saying ‘sausage’ a few times. Angus equates the experience of listening to ‘Melitha’ with trying to swim up the Zambezi with his arms tied. Angus is also repulsed by the Lodge Receptionist, Candice, a 25-year-old bottle blonde with an accent straight from the bowels of Boksburg who is ‘looser than a Mugabe promise’. He is nauseated by the schmoozing and sliming Russell ‘The Love Muscle’, a wildlife filmmaker who believes himself to be the (sexy) god of the bushveld. The gluttony of the 120kg Hilda Botha, Head of Finance, and the shortcomings of Incredible the Security Guard (who is anything but) leave him exasperated. The only member of staff who Angus does seem to be fond of is Elvis, the

while all this is going on, they still find time to indulge in sibling ‘altercations’ and resultant revenge. Although it is not uncommon for an e-mail from one of the brothers to begin with the grateful words ‘I’m not dead’, the merriment of the young staff seems to alleviate the gravity of some of their more frightening situations. Much to Angus’s disgust, the ‘bunch of drunken peons’ frequently retreat to Twin Palms, the ‘vile den’ in which they behave like ‘creatures that would make Austrolopithecines embarrassed’ as booze flows into them ‘at roughly the same rate as water gushing from the sluices on the Three Gorges Dam’. Although highly amusing from start to finish, the novel does surprise with some memorable moments that may inspire tears of the more solemn kind in the more sensitive reader. It is not surprising to learn that the author himself spent ten years working at exclusive lodges in Southern Africa as a ranger, ranger trainer, head ranger, land manager, lodge manager, researcher and, of course, entertainer. Read this book before you book your next game lodge visit. It’s an absolute must.

01Healthsunburn is a potential health hazard
S
ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.
02Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.
03Travel Options Air
There are several domestic airlines in South Africa, including South African Airways, South African Express, Interlink, Airlink and British Airways. Low-cost carriers include: 1time, Kulula and Mango.
Bus
Greyhound (+27 83 915 9000), InterCape (+27 21 380 4400) and Translux (+27 861 589 282) are the three main bus services in South Africa. All flights and bus tickets can be booked via Computicket at www.computicket.com or by calling +27 83 915 8000.
Trains
For budget trips across the country, Shosholoza Meyl is the best service available. Book online at www.shosholozameyl.co.za and enquiries can be directed to +27 86 000 8888. If you decide to splurge, though, there are three outstanding options. The famous Blue Train (+27 12 334 8459), Rovos Rail (+27 12 315 8242) and Premier Classe (+27 86 000 8888) are luxurious liners with all the bells and whistles.

The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. A Note for Smokers South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
