T
he exclusive safari lodge recaptures the romantic mystique of authentic safaris from centuries past, allowing guests to experience the breathtaking natural world of Africa merged with colonial nostalgia and modern sophistication in an unforgettably unique five star adventure. Gorah is the only private concession and camp situated in the middle of the famous Addo Elephant National Park, home to the densest population of elephants on earth. The park is malaria-free, boasts the Big Five and is a member of Relais & Chateaux. During the colonial era, the vast expanses of land, wild animals and fascinating encounters with rural tribes led to legendary tales of Africa that have shaped history and drawn more and more visitors to this magical and mystical place. Visitors to the area will discover the captivating rhythm that calls for adventure and fills the soul with an intense passion for the ever-changing landscape, the majestic animals and the cultural diversity. The 1900s were years in which the elite indulged in the extravagance of crystal, polished silver, white linen and G&T’s in the afternoon. At Gorah, guests are transported back to this era through the day-to-day luxuries offered at the camp. The gracious Gorah Manor House, a National Monument, was built in 1856 and has been immaculately restored and period furnished, recalling the opulence and romance of the noble safari. Lazy colonial verandas spill out onto the African plains overlooking the now famous
and extraordinarily busy Gorah waterhole. Life at the house is as easygoing and carefree as it was over a century ago - animals come and go and time stands still. The staff offers warm and unobtrusive service and meticulous attention to detail – hallmarks of Hunter properties – of the highest standard. Sheltered under thatched canopies with private decks, the eleven magnificent en suite tents are spacious and luxurious, recalling the golden era of safari in the early 1900s. Each is enhanced with the fine comforts and excellence associated with Hunter Hotels and Relais & Chateaux. Dinner is a real occasion at Gorah. As one enters the Gorah House with its historic magnificence, the magic is all encompassing. Estate wines are carefully chosen to enhance the dining experience. Al fresco dining is as much of a treat, with the colonial veranda of the house overlooking the watering hole and rolling plains. Together with the secluded boma area, these are idyllic settings for unforgettable dining experiences. Gorah offers all the services one would expect from a five star property and much more. The team prides itself in ensuring that all guests experience the perfect getaway. To ensure that visitors never want for any comforts during their stay, the tented suites are superbly equipped with all the modern necessities required for a five star experience. Hairdryers, personal in-room safes, bathrobes, slippers, Charlotte Rhys body products, umbrellas and complimentary sherry are present in each room. 18

Whales having been added to the legendary five with the addition of the Marine Reserve). Gorah Elephant Camp opened its doors to the public in December 2000, making history as the very first private concession in a National Park in South Africa, and the rest, as they say, is history. Gorah has actively dedicated itself to the conservation of the Addo Elephant National Park through strategic business partnerships and initiatives that aim to protect the area from the Garden Route to the National Park. The camp is the current recipient of the South African National Parks Business Partner of the Year Award. It is also accredited by the Wilderness Foundation’s Green Leaf Initiative. The lodge is solar and gas powered, although a generator is run for hairdryers at any time. Guests staying at Gorah are able to enjoy game drives and access all the facilities on offer at the lodge. One can soak up the sun, shop, read, enjoy a glass of wine or share adventures with travelling companions in the comfort and splendour of the house, with its open verandah, large lounge with fireplace, spacious swimming pool with loungers and complimentary Wi-Fi access in the reception area. Home to more biomes than any other park, the Addo Elephant National Park is deeply steeped in history. The great herds of the area had been decimated by hunters as early as the 1700s, culminating in the massacre by government decree of what was thought to be the remaining 119 elephants. Fortunately public opinion subsequently changed, leading to the proclamation of the park in 1931 in an attempt to protect the last remaining 11 elephants. The original size of the park was just over 2 000 hectares, and it now boasts an incredible 180,000 hectares. Although the park was originally proclaimed to protect a single species, priorities have now changed to conserve the rich biological diversity found in the area and it is now home to the Big 7 (with Great White Sharks and Humpback

Crafted from the pick of the crop in the Western Cape’s finest vineyards, Fleur du Cap offers quality wines that are true to their varietal character and boast a close affinity to nature. “The newly released 2012 vintages of both our Bergkelder Selection Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are packed with elegant berry fruit flavours supported by gentle tannins that leave you with a wonderful ultrasmooth finish,” says Wim Truter, who works closely with cellar master Andrea Freeborough and viticulturist Bennie Liebenberg to craft wines in the manner in which nature intended. “Because the quality and character of every wine starts in the vineyards, we are in the enviable position of being able to source the best grapes from a diverse range of vineyard sites and micro climates throughout the Western Cape, with each imparting special qualities to our wines,” adds Wim. Adventurous food lovers who enjoy everything from spicy Mediterranean to full-flavoured duck or guinea fowl dishes will delight in the Bergkelder Selection Merlot 2012. The ruby red, full-bodied wine teems with vibrant cherry, plum and prune aromas that follow through onto a velvety soft, mouth filling palate. On the other hand, the well-balanced Bergkelder Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, which is best enjoyed with hearty stews and strongly flavoured cheeses, offers a subtle bouquet of ripe berries and cherries underlined by elegant oak spices, with clean, soft fruit and delicate oak nuances playing on the tongue. Wild Honey Life at a Zimbabwean Wildlife Sanctuary Following on from the highly acclaimed All the Way Home, here is a brand new volume of unforgettable adventures from Richard and Bookey Peek’s wildlife sanctuary among Zimbabwe’s ancient Matobo Hills. Packed with anecdote and adventure, Wild Honey leads us back to the Stone Hills sanctuary, where comedy, tragedy and the extraordinary antics of the most misunderstood animal in the world make every day unforgettable. In these troubled times Stone Hills has become more than a sanctuary. As thousands of farms all over Zimbabwe are invaded, often violently, under the government’s disastrous land policy, Stone Hills is now an island rocked by the turbulence that surrounds it. How much longer can they hold on? After an idyllic childhood in the Bvumba Mountains and ten years travelling the world, Bookey Peek became a lawyer, a profession she was only too happy to leave for a life in the bush. Like her husband, Richard, she is a professional safari guide, and was the winner of the prestigious Africa Geographic Travel Writer of the Year Award in 2003. Richard Peek was born in Zimbabwe and raised on a farm in Mashonaland. After obtaining a degree in zoology, he spent fourteen years in the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management as a game ranger and then as an ecologist. He later became curator of mammals at the National Museum of Natural History. The winner of two Agfa photographic awards, Richard has produced work published in magazines, calendars, travel brochures and books. His documentary, Honey Badger: Raising Hell, has been distributed internationally by National Geographic. For further information and orders visit www.penguinbooks.co.za.

Zambezi Queen
There are few natural wonders as synonymous with Africa’s raw wilderness as the great Chobe River. These waters divide Namibia’s Caprivi Strip from Botswana’s Chobe National Park, and the exotic banks boast one of the densest populations of wildlife on the African continent. Teeming with life, this National Park sprawls across some 11 000 m of lush African bush, and is home to the largest populace of elephants in the world – currently estimated at roughly 120 000. It is on this great expanse of untamed water that an adventure unlike any other awaits. Why join the crowds on land-based game drives when you can experience the thrill of it all from your own private suite aboard a luxury 45 meter boat? The Zambezi Queen is all about pampering, indulgence and superior comfort. ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.
02Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
