didn’t want to write about Nelson Mandela in this ed’s note. What more can possibly be said? Each one of us has heard of the icon to some extent, and we are all saddened by his current health predicament. I really don’t believe that any of my words can successfully pay homage to such a great figure. I do however believe that his own words can act as a reminder of why we have loved and honoured him for so many years. On 9 August South Africa will celebrate Women’s Day in commemoration of the national march of women to petition against African pass legislation on this day in 1956. Here’s what our beloved Madiba had to say about Women’s Day in his third year of presidency: “When the women of South Africa converged on these Union Buildings forty years ago, from every corner of South Africa, they created one of the enduring landmarks of our country`s history. They declared that women would insist on their role in making history. Then, they vowed to a stubborn oppressor that they would resist and fight for liberation. The presence of so many women from so many parts of our land underlines the weight of the pledge for women of South Africa to join hands with government for Unity, Peace and Development. That is a daunting task. The legacy of oppression weighs
heavily on women. As long as women are bound by poverty and as long as they are looked down upon, human rights will lack substance. As long as outmoded ways of thinking prevent women from making a meaningful contribution to society, progress will be slow. As long as the nation refuses to acknowledge the equal role of more than half of itself, it is doomed to failure. Yet we can acknowledge on this Women`s Day that in its short life, democratic South Africa has marked out significant milestones towards improving the status of women. For this we congratulate the women of South Africa: in government; in business; in trade union and community structures; in religious bodies; in women`s organisations and elsewhere. Equal power and glory to the Women of South Africa!” This month, join us in celebration of our former president, of the women of the world and of the revolutionary spirit of our beautiful Africa.

the Village pub gave way to mornings of hearty and inexpensive breakfasts and afternoons of lazy market trawling and relaxing in the indigenous garden, enjoying the company of laughing children and lazing Labradors. Although the pristine and eco-friendly village of Noordhoek is lauded for its stretching white beaches and magnificent views, we were so comfortable in the hotel and farm village that it didn’t seem necessary to venture out. I did venture to enquire about surrounding activities at the local tourism office and although I beg to differ, I was delighted to be met with the response: “there is really nothing to do in Noordhoek – isn’t it just brilliant?” Functions can be held in De Noordhoek Hotel’s relaxed meeting space, which boasts ample natural light and all the facilities needed to host a successful event. The hotel is a 45 minute drive from Cape Town International Airport and only 30 minutes away from the city’s CBD. rriving at De Noordhoek Lifestyle Hotel on a wintry Friday night felt like returning to a warm and inviting home away from home, albeit a particularly charming and regal one. We were warmly welcomed by members of staff who continued to afford us attentive and personal care for the duration of the weekend, and we enjoyed an eclectic dinner of sushi and milkshake on a cozy fireside couch whilst kicking up our feet and listening to the melodies of the old musical favourites played specially for us until the wee hours of the morning. The four-star Cape country hotel boasts over 20 double en-suite rooms decorated in warm earthy tones and great local artwork. There are four rooms for physically challenged guests. The intimate lounge gives way to a sunny breakfast room, and the sparkling pool and sushi restaurant are firm summer favourites. A difficult customer at the best of times, my partner spent at least half an hour raving about the mattress on our spacious double bed, hailing it as “the best mattress in Africa”. The only thing that was able to lure me out of our charming and exceedingly comfortable en-suite room was an odd early morning craving, and I was most impressed to find 24 hour reception staff on duty when I ventured downstairs to see how it could be satisfied. The hotel itself is aged and wooded like a great wine, and the setting in the Noordhoek Farm Village is utterly charming and serene. Evenings at the festive Toad in

he soft, natural elements and textures of the deco, the large heated vitality pool and the relaxation deck beckon ladies to kick up their feet and ease their bodies and minds in a beautiful, comfortable and nurturing environment. And that’s before the intimate treatment rooms and trendy wellness facilities have even been revealed. The word Amani means spirit in Kiswahili, and the Amani Spa Group, which is wholeheartedly dedicated to female development and empowerment, resonates with the spirit of divine feminine energy. With the help of soft, skilled female hands and Mother Nature’s own restorative ingredients, the treatments offered at the spa assist in conditioning, toning, balancing, releasing, detoxifying, cleansing, stimulating, polishing, slimming, smoothing, refining and renewing the miracle that is the female body. Although the spa is unisex and there are men’s treatments available, I experienced it as a cocoon of womanly pampering, in which each subtle nuance of body, mind and spirit is addressed in a most gentle and restorative manner. From eliminating toxins and releasing emotional stress
to primping and preening, Amani Spa offers it all. A specialized Hydro Journey consisting of rasul, kneipp and caldarium facilities, to name a few, invigorates and restores. An extensive range of body treatments including crystal, hot stone and aromatherapy massage as well as body polishes and wraps assists in everything from tension release to cell stimulation and cellulite reduction. A specialized range of bespoke facials revives and perfects every skin type, and the usual beautifying frills leave skin smooth and hairless and nails and toenails perfectly polished and shaped. Founded in 2006, the Amani Spa Group has tailored and tweaked its range of spa packages, signature spa rituals and holistic skin, beauty and body treatments to perfection, taking home no less than four prestigious Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Awards since inception. Although the Amani Spa at the V&A Waterfront’s pristine Radisson Blu Hotel (with its Table Mountain backdrop and Atlantic charm) is a firm favourite, Amani Spas can be found in exclusive lodges and hotels countrywide. he winemaking team at Durbanville Hills Wines took great care when they crafted the 2011 Pinotage, handling the grapes with the utmost tenderness. The end product - a full-bodied wine - is a fine example of how the cool climate conditions of the Durbanville area – the unique set of rolling hills, maritime breezes and soil composition - promote quality and elegance. Sweet, ripe red berry fruit and red cherry flavours combine with a hint of vanilla on the nose that leads to a rich, fruity character in this mouth-filling wine. The wine was matured for twelve months in predominantly French oak. A small percentage new oak was combined with older wood and wood alternatives to prevent over-wooding and to preserve the elegance of the cool climate fruit. The 2011 Durbanville Hills Pinotage retails for about R75 and is available from most supermarkets and liquor outlets as well as at the cellar. www.durbanvillehills.co.za

01Healthsunburn is a potential health hazard
S
ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.
02S a fe t y • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
