“A people's relationship to their heritage is the same as the relationship of a child to its mother.” – John Henrik Clarke September is Heritage Month in South Africa. A celebration of aspects of local culture such as creative expression, historical inheritance, language, food and popular memory, the significant month calls upon South Africans to promote a national identity that is self-conscious of both its current cultural climate and its liberation heritage. While a respect for the latter necessitates a fostering of social cohesion, nation building, economic development and inclusive citizenship, a celebration of the country’s cultural heritage can be undertaken by visiting sites of rich expressive significance throughout the diverse country. We’re celebrating Heritage Month by introducing you to offerings from across the South African cultural spectrum, from feasting on a plethora of unique
local eats to learning about ancient and largely isolated indigenous cultures. Whether you’d like to immerse yourself in the buzz of a Gauteng metropolis, the rural charm of the fisherman’s West Coast, the warm hospitality of a Transkei village or the natural and historical awe of the Kgalagadi, you’re bound to found an appealing destination or experience somewhere in the pages of our latest edition. Enjoy!

Every suburb has one: a lovely little café frequented by residents and visitors alike. If you’re based in Parkwood, that place may well be Park Café, run by sisters Vicky Ross and Lexi Reckling. The menu is a smorgasbord of indulgent delights: think stacks of steaming crumpets or gourmet French toast; Norwegian salmon fishcakes with spicy salsa; and halloumi, rocket and avocado sarmies. For something more sinful, try the cheesecake with chocolate ganache, the Rocky Road treats, or the lemon and almond cake, all accompanied by coffee served straight from the magnificent Belle Epoque coffee machine. www.parkcafe.co.za

airlawns is one of Johannesburg’s best-kept secrets, where guests are treated like royalty, and their privacy is of utmost importance. It is a five-star home away from home, where exclusivity is key and the city seems far away. It is, however, located only minutes by car to the major business and shopping centres of Sandton. The initial vision of owners John and Anna Thacker was to create a unique five-star hotel where guests could feel embraced by the elegant grounds, service and ambience without losing the flexibility that they consider the raison d'être of Fairlawns. Thinking like guests rather than like hoteliers is their motto. Villa d’Este on Lake Como in Northern Italy and Easton Manor in Surrey, England were the inspiration behind the Palladian architecture and overall design style of the hotel. sprawling property, brings together the rich variations of décor styles within the suites themselves, which vary from the Florentine Suite to the African Suite, with a host of unexpected surprises in between. The fact that Fairlawns was built on the original home of the owners also contributes towards the inviting ambience of the property, which was an Oppenheimer residence prior to being purchased by the Thackers. No tall highrise or noisy traffic; only graciousness and a “welcome home” feeling - a haven after the day’s business has been concluded or the tour completed, and the perfect place to enjoy a sundowner whilst listening to the flocks of birds returning to their ‘headquarters’ on the property. Fairlawns accommodates both local and international corporate and leisure guests, all of whom seem to come to regard it as their private sanctuary when in Johannesburg. eventeen years after opening, Singita Boulders Lodge in the Sabi Sand Reserve has been thoughtfully reconfigured and redecorated to reveal its essential character and define its unique sense of place on the boulder-strewn banks of the Sand River. The original inspiration for the lodge came from the geometry of these ancient, weathered boulders and the natural curve of the river bed. This time around, architect Sally Tsiliyiannis of GAPP Architects & Urban Designers and designers Cécile & Boyd have taken further cues from nature, incorporating the colours, textures and elements of the surrounding landscape. “The focus is on bringing together reflections of light, texture, colour, shadows, relationships between inside and outside and the spirit of the place to create form and space," explains Tsiliyiannis. Boyd Ferguson of Cécile & Boyd agrees that it was crucial to retain the essence of the place in the redesign. Guest areas have been opened up, lowered, and brought closer to the river, allowing for full engagement with the magnificent setting beneath the ebony and weeping boer bean trees. the lodge merges seamlessly with the shifting light, shapes and moods of the environment, providing a soothing sanctuary for world-weary travellers craving a connection with nature. Dramatic sculptural shapes, abstract art, and carefully curated collections of crystals, seed pods, bones and other found objects articulate a deep connection with the wild. There is a sense that everything has been derived from the earth. Rustic and worn, woven and carved, furnishings include iconic pieces fashioned from fossilised tree stumps, slabs of solid stone, artisanal wrought iron and leather, with each element designed to reveal its intrinsic beauty. Awe-inspiring original contemporary paintings, sculptures and soft, sensual textures – a sheep-skin rug to step onto when you get out of bed, or the feel of natural flax bed linen on your skin – add subtle layers of luxury. Open to the elements or separated from the outdoors by glass walls, the lodge provides a continuous connection with the prolific wildlife and birdlife for which the reserve is so well known. Cleverly designed communal spaces, such as the new sociable Copper Bar serving freshly pressed fruit juices, espressos and cocktails, provide new opportunities for guests to connect with their surroundings and with each other. 22
The 12 spacious and private suites - two of which are designed exclusively for families - blend soulful, sensual Africa with high design to instil a sense of tranquillity and ease guests into the rhythm of safari life. It’s as if the very soul of Singita Boulders Lodge has been fine-tuned and stripped back down to the basics, freeing up guests to experience and explore nature like never before. The transformative procedures combine crystal baths, body polishes and wraps, facials and massages to kick-start the body’s natural period of healing and regeneration. he success of the estate’s holistic method can be attributed to the open-minded and creative approach of proprietor Johnathan Grieve, whose thirst for knowledge is unquenchable. On the 300-year-old family-owned farm in the Klein Drakenstein Mountains, no life form is considered “bad”, and nothing is eradicated. On the contrary, Grieve strives to create conditions that are conducive to more life. “Biodiversity, or the variety of life in an ecosystem, is a tangible measure of the health and balance of a particular habitat,” he explains. “It’s important because each species, from the lowliest microbe to a human being, plays a distinct role in keeping the planet running smoothly.”
Feature wine
Grieve pioneered the organic-biodynamic-scientific approach he calls BioLOGIC®. It works as a dynamic system in which soil, water, plants, animals, people, and energy are part of a complex web of relationships and networks, interconnected and interdependent. Guided by the Avondale ethos of “Terra est vita” (“Soil is life”), Grieve bases his system on the simple but profound principle that healthy soil produces healthy plants. “We look at broad-spectrum natural nutrition; in essence, we want to feed not only the plants but all the soil life. We do this through using things like concentrated sea solids, which have a perfectly balanced nutrition with up to 90 elements, and our major source of nitrogen is through incorporating legumes in our cover cropping. If we create the perfect environment for soil life and feeding this life, it will in turn supply all the nutrition that our vines need, in perfect balance and plant-available form.” In order to enhance the farm’s unique energy and sustain an awareness of its special place in the cosmos, Grieve also uses a full spectrum of biodynamic methods and preparations. These include following an astronomic planting calendar, which takes into account the influence of various cosmic forces on our natural environment; and using a “field broadcaster” energy device that works with natural cosmic energies to stimulate healthy growth in the 32
vines and improve the quality of the environment and therefore the grapes. The natural processes continue in the cellar, an ultramodern gravity-flow installation that ensures the highestquality slow wines with the least negative impact on the wine and the environment. Only natural wild yeasts are used, and there is minimum added sulphur. “It’s taken us a number of years to refine our winemaking process and to create the extraordinary wines we aimed for when we started farming here in 1996,” says Grieve. “It’s an extraordinary process, complex and slow, but ultimately rewarding. BioLOGIC® allows us to do no harm to our natural environment while producing hand-crafted wines that are truly exceptional.” Avondale produces seven wines: Camissa, a rosé; Cyclus, a refreshing white blend; Anima, a lively Chenin Blanc; La Luna, a classic red blend; Samsara, a Syrah; Navitas, the flagship red blend; and Armilla, a sparkling wine made in the Méthode Cap Classique tradition. Avondale offers eco tours of the farm, during which visitors can share the insight and inspiration of Grieve’s BioLOGIC approach to winemaking. ead Chef Wesley Randles and General Manager Simon Widdison are continually elevating The Pot Luck Club experience to greater sensory heights, with regular music offerings, interactive dining options and an ever-changing series of taste sensations on the agenda. The restaurant offers unique and appetising brunch, lunch and dinner options. Unusual taste sensations include the likes of BBQ broccoli mops with blue cheese, Parmesan and porcini quiche and Thai banana pancakes with coconut and cashew ice cream. Crowd pleasers like fish tacos and smoked beef fillet are staples for those who prefer to stick to trusted favourites. The Pot Luck Club’s help-yourself Bloody Mary Bar is bursting with novel ingredients and edible innovations. The restaurant has created three of its own flavoured vodkas using bacon, black pepper and green herbs, and diners can mix these up with The Pot Luck Club’s own tomato juices laced with either smoked jalapeño or bacon. The usual Bloody Mary accoutrements can be enjoyed along with stuffed olives, gherkins, Worcestershire sauce, caviar, various chilli sauces and delicious bacon stirrers. In a bid to encourage visitors to linger longer, the restaurant has kept things easy – there’s a R350 fixed price for brunch and a R150 charge for bottomless Bloody Marys or Bubbly. What’s more, world-renowned jazz musician Buddy Wells, together with a series of guest artists, keeps the Bloody Mary Sunday brunch crowd entertained. The Pot Luck Club’s range of in-house cocktails is as diverse as their other offerings, with spectacular sips from spicy Thai-style and beetroot & chocolate martinis to moreish Apple Strudel cocktails catering for every palate and occasion. With all this on offer, it makes sense to get out the diary and book your lunch, dinner and brunch dates now. You may want to book a few, as one visit to The Pot Luck Club is invariably not enough. T
his biography of JM Coetzee is the first to be written with the co-operation of Coetzee himself. With access to the writer, author JC Kannemeyer was able to establish hitherto unsuspected connections between the writer’s life and work. The story follows Coetzee from his sometimes troubled childhood, through his student years in Cape Town, his work as a computer programmer in Britain, the years as a lecturer in the United States, to his return to Cape Town, from where he became internationally renowned as a writer, before eventually relocating to Australia. Kannemeyer candidly but sensitively describes Coetzee’s relations with his parents, his wife and children, his colleagues and publishers. His account reveals the joy and also the sorrow that marked some of these relationships and how he was able to incorporate these experiences into situations, figures or motifs in his novels. He describes the painstaking discipline with which Coetzee has practiced his writing: how each novel came to be written; how he sketched his initial ideas from various angles to reveal hidden, deeper truths. He also corrects many misapprehensions about a man who, having made his mark, warded off the temptations of fame in order to remain a working writer. After Kannemeyer it will not be possible to read Coetzee without an awareness of the deeply personal history and the social and political circumstances from which Coetzee’s work has emerged. 39

Kapama Karula
Kapama Private Game Reserve occupies a vast area between the northern Drakensberg Mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park, in the north east of South Africa. It spans 13 000 hectares of magnificent African bushveld, and is teeming with wildlife. The most secluded and prestigious of four luxury lodges on the reserve, Kapama Karula is set on the banks of the perennial Klaserie River. Meaning ‘place of peace’ in the local language, Kapama Karula exudes calmness and depicts the pinnacle of luxury five-star safari accommodation. Five spacious suites are each equipped with a full range of luxury comforts and amenities. For an experience that’s closer to nature and authentically African, Kapama Karula offers guests the opportunity to sleep in one of two traditional Meru tents. While the lodge’s open-plan lounge and bar are spacious yet cosy, the African sunshine can really be enjoyed on the outside wooden deck, with views over the meandering river. A new addition to the lodge, the multipurpose library is equipped with audiovisual equipment.

01 Health sunburn is a potential health hazard
S
ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.
02 Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.
03 Travel Options Air
There are several domestic airlines in South Africa, including South African Airways, South African Express, Interlink, Airlink and British Airways. Low-cost carriers include: 1time, Kulula and Mango.
Bus
Greyhound (+27 83 915 9000), InterCape (+27 21 380 4400) and Translux (+27 861 589 282) are the three main bus services in South Africa. All flights and bus tickets can be booked via Computicket at www.computicket.com or by calling +27 83 915 8000.
Trains
For budget trips across the country, Shosholoza Meyl is the best service available. Book online at www.shosholozameyl.co.za and enquiries can be directed to +27 86 000 8888. If you decide to splurge, though, there are three outstanding options. The famous Blue Train (+27 12 334 8459), Rovos Rail (+27 12 315 8242) and Premier Classe (+27 86 000 8888) are luxurious liners with all the bells and whistles.
Cars
Most of the main car rental companies have outlets at the international airports and in major centres. In South Africa, we drive on the left side of the road. The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. Foreign members of the Automobile Association (AA) can register as a temporary member in South Africa at any local AA branch. For more information, phone +27 83 843 2222.

A Note for Smokers South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
