Call it corny, contrived, commercial - whatever (equally overdone) expression of cynicism successfully assuages your fear of disappointment on the day – somewhere deep down you know that 14 Feb, if approached correctly, can in fact be a most marvellous affair. After years spent conjuring outof-the-box suggestions for enjoying (or avoiding) the month of romance, we have finally surrendered to the impulse to embrace the cliché. The experiences presented in this edition are for the unashamed romantics - in the broadest sense of the term. Luxury tents for two in the heart of the wilderness, weekends in the winelands, boutique hotel overnight packages, island getaways, retro cinemas, a host of wine and dine options. To our credit, we did try to include a bit about golf and aviation to temper the sentimentality of it all. If you are really serious about your distaste for the tradition, forget we ever said anything about romance and
enjoy the experiences purely for the qualities that made them so popular among the dewy-eyed memorymakers in the first place. Exploration, indulgence, novelty, relaxation, and inspiration needn’t be exclusive privileges of those enjoying the offerings with their significant others. They say the art of romancing oneself is essentially a pursuit of those things one finds most enjoyable, and we’d be most surprised if a great movie, a delicious meal, a quiet commune with nature or a glamorous night out do not fit the bill. Go on – embrace the cliché. You know you want to.

be savoured by a more international audience. Appealing for its tropical climate and friendly touristfriendly population, the island offers a smorgasbord of high-end accommodation options, yet the original “Saint Géran” – as the locals affectionately call it – remains the ultimate retreat. This crown jewel in the Kerzner International hotel empire beckons all to its pristine sheltered beaches and immaculately managed facilities with the promise of Coco Loco rum cocktails and sumptuous seafood feasts. Situated on the island’s northeastern seaboard, One&Only Le Saint Géran is more than a hotel; it is a decades-old institution of indulgent Mauritian hospitality that habitually hosts the world’s most famous, who enjoy the privacy and luxury for which One&Only is renowned. A 40-minute drive from Mauritius’ new world-class airport, One&Only Le Saint Géran is the ideal point from which to launch one of the most memorable

orty years ago, hotelier rock star Sol Kerzner opened his first resort outside of South Africa and named it Le Saint Géran, after the famous shipwreck in the area. Now known as One&Only Le Saint Géran, the perennial South African favourite island holiday destination is making a comeback, in an exciting and enticing way. Mauritius’ close proximity to South Africa has turned the island into the off-continent holiday destination of choice for South Africans for many decades. With daily flights from Johannesburg aboard SAA’s service to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, this tiny island beckons the weary to its revitalising shores. Within such easy reach, and with its many breath-taking attractions, the tranquillity of Mauritius deserves to

vacations one could hope to enjoy, whether you intend to explore the island itself, or prefer a secluded experience at the resort. A stunning variety of accommodation choices is on offer. The resort’s 162 suites and signature villa feature a private terrace or balcony facing either the ocean or the cove. Personalised with hand-selected furniture and decorated in artful colours, each suite is a tranquil haven and a home-away-from-home. As a family-friendly resort, with 76 interconnecting Junior Suites, One&Only Le Saint Géran makes no pretences that its exclusive ambience should exclude anyone. On the contrary, the concept of the KidsOnly Club – which now features at many Kerzner International properties – originated at the Saint Géran. One&Only Le Saint Géran is unashamedly a family resort where children are welcomed and well catered for, yet older family members can enjoy numerous activities of their own, including sailing, water cycling, rowing, tennis, or – perhaps the most arduous pursuit – soaking up the sun as attentive beach staff offer an endless supply of thirst-quenchers. Far (in relative Mauritian terms) from the hustle and bustle of the island’s capital, Port Louis, One&Only Le Saint Géran is an epicurean destination of distinction that towers above the norm on the island and rivals some of 16
the best restaurants in Cape Town or Johannesburg. As an epicurean destination, One&Only Le Saint Géran comfortably exceeds expectations. The three restaurants at the resort cater for every palate and offer an intercontinental assortment of cuisine options. The Indian Pavilion offers signature Indian and Mauritian-inspired dishes in a romantic seaside location just a short walk from the main hotel building. The restaurant commands a view of the green sugarcane fields across the bay, and the team, under the helm of the hugely talented Chef de Cuisine Faizan Ali, has made many a honeymooner’s dinner dreams come true. From signature live cooking shows to an Indian Tepanyaki-style grill (known as TAK-A-TAK) and an open Tandoor, the Indian Pavilion dazzles and delights. Wines are also carefully selected to match the complex and intensive flavours of Chef Faizan’s cooking, and the resident sommelier conducts regular wine and food pairing dinners. For similarly scrumptious dining, PRIME Contemporary Grill invites diners into its relaxed yet modern environment. Exclusively serving Australian Wagyu beef alongside fresh seafood and organic produce, PRIME scores full marks for its attentive service too. Be sure to explore the dessert menu to round off your meal – the deconstructed tiramisu is out of this world! For a special
bucket list destination for those who have not yet had the privilege of experiencing this Indian Ocean paradise. Yes, Mauritius – as many other global destinations – does have some less-than-ideal social issues, but the sincerity of its people and their absolute passion for the tiny island will leave you dreaming of returning long after the taste of the Coco Loco has faded. here are almost as many places to shop for curios and gifts in Livingstone as there are accommodation options and things to do. Roadside stalls are a dime a dozen, and bargaining is the name of the game. For a taste of true African bargaining on African time, the Mukuni Market is the place to be. Here local artisans will vie for your cash with beautiful and unique carvings of human and animal figurines, as well as leather goods, bead works, drums, spears, and walking sticks. It may take some time to settle on the exact piece (and price) you want, but at least you know that your purchase directly supports the local economy. However, if you don’t have much time or don’t wish to haggle, it is best to head off to one of the established curio and art stores in Livingstone. African Gifts stocks a small range of Zambian souvenirs and crafts, while African Visions has a great selection of textiles, baskets, jewellery, artefacts, and new and secondhand books. You can grab a coffee and a snack while you browse, and the kiddies’ playground is a sure winner for harassed parents. Another option for a caffeine-fuelled experience is Kubu Crafts. Located in a renovated historical railway house, the store is a veritable treasure trove of unexpected delights. Teak furniture, wrought-iron fittings and jewellery, textiles, paintings by local artists, glassware, and beautiful handmade cards are all available, and staff will even arrange to ship your purchases back home for you. The Hammerkop’s Nest features some quality textiles, handmade stationery, jewellery, basketware, safari gear, hats, and home accessories – all at reasonable prices. Even

the Livingstone Museum, the oldest and largest museum in Zambia, has a small craft shop, advertising the lowest prices in town. The Shop that Thunders stocks the customary curios and memorabilia found at the Victoria Falls Market but without the noisy crowds, while more unusual goodies can be sourced at The Whole in the Wall, with its selection of funky locally made souvenirs. Likewise, Zig craft market stocks only locally produced goods, especially textiles and souvenirs. Last but certainly not least, don’t forget to stock up on some biltong at Tunya Meats & Deli. Keep an open mind and don’t expect shopping in Livingstone to compare with a high-street experience. It’s all about finding that special something that will always remind you of the unique and exciting place. After a long day of shopping, retire to the majestic fivestar David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa on the Zambezi River. There is no match for its levels of service, luxury and award-winning spa facilities. Located in Mosi-O-Tunya National Park, the blissfully romantic lodge is one of the most magical spots to create an unforgettable honeymoon that will result in memories to be shared and celebrated for a lifetime. airlawns is one of Johannesburg’s best-kept secrets, where guests are treated like royalty, and their privacy is of utmost importance. With its air of relaxed exclusivity, the hotel is a five-star home away from home set in an environment of peaceful isolation. However, despite the city seeming far away, the major business and shopping centres of Sandton lie close by, and can be reached by car in a matter of minutes. The initial vision of owners John and Anna Thacker was to create a unique luxury hotel where guests would feel 22

Villa d’Este on Lake Como in Northern Italy and Easton Manor in Surrey, England were the inspiration behind the hotel’s predominantly Palladian architectural style. The fact that Fairlawns was built on the original home of the owners adds to the air of gracious hospitality present in every building on the sprawling property. An Oppenheimer residence prior to being purchased by the Thackers, the hotel has a “welcome home” feeling that encourages guests to relax at the end of a long business day or sightseeing tour – the perfect place to enjoy a sundowner while listening to the birds returning to their “headquarters” on the property. Fairlawns accommodates both local and international corporate and leisure guests, all of whom seem to regard the hotel as their private sanctuary when in Johannesburg. The delectable cuisine on offer at the Terrace Restaurant and the pampering treats presented at the Balinese Spa are also available to day visitors. While the Meeting and Banquet Centre provides the perfect venue for productive business gatherings, the private Bali-inspired Spa gardens offer a restorative escape for those wanting to disappear from it all for a while. Golfers are never disappointed, as the hotel is in partnership with the nearby Johannesburg Country Club, which offers two world-class courses. et on a cliff-side overlooking the Indian Ocean, Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort in Mossel Bay was recently named Best Golf Development in Africa in the prestigious African Property Awards 2014 - 2015 in association with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. It offers seven kilometres of fairways and 80 bunkers, with the Indian Ocean as the only water hazard. The championship course was designed by well-known South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich, who opened it together with top Irish Tour Golf Professional Darren Clarke in November 2006. Winner of the Compleat Golfer 5-star Experience Award in 2012, the Pinnacle Course offering comes complete with expert advice from the Pinnacle Peak Performance Centre, run by the Grasslands Golf Academy. Here, stateof-the-art technology includes impressive offerings such as a six-camera, three-dimensional system to analyse the golfer's body, club and impact in 360 degrees. The information is accurate to a 10th of a degree. The highspeed cameras are the same as those used in video games, and track the markers placed on the golfer and club to view all angles of the swing. For those who would like to enjoy an active holiday off the golf course, the resort offers walking trails around the estate, as well as easy access to the Pinnacle Point 28
Nature Reserve. Mountain bike enthusiasts can also enjoy trails through the reserve area, with the choice between a shortened easy ride and a longer, more challenging option. For those interested in the historical significance of the resort’s spectacular natural surrounds, a guided tour of the historic caves is a must. Partaking in all these outdoor activities can build up a fierce appetite, and days at the resort typically begin and end with scrumptious meals enjoyed at the Pinnacle Restaurant, where everything from gourmet creations to comforting favourites can be enjoyed whilst taking in the magnificent surrounding views. Although the multitude of offerings at Pinnacle Point can be enjoyed by day visitors, the resort offers luxuriously outfitted lodges and villas ranging from one-, two-, and three-bedroom units to four-bedroom penthouses. The villas all boast large balconies with panoramic sea views, and both the villas and the lodges share a beautiful landscaped garden with a pristine swimming pool. Catering for everyone from the serious golfer to the relaxed seaside explorer, Pinnacle Point is one of the Garden Route’s most popular destinations. he festive and unique Hakuna Matata Beach Lodge & Spa stands proudly amongst the ruins, granting travellers the opportunity to enjoy the pristine private bay and white sandy beach – which once made the area fit for royalty - in comfort and style. Personally managed by German owners Rose and Fritz Geuen, the four-star resort is just 12 km north of Zanzibar’s historical Stone Town, and offers easy access to the myriad attractions of the island. Nestled in a lush tropical garden overflowing with papaya, banana, mango, coconut, and lime, the intimate resort’s 13 exclusive bungalows and one villa accommodate a total of 37 guests. Each bungalow (and the villa) boasts a spectacular view of the Indian Ocean, and a spacious terrace from which to enjoy it. The bungalows range from Executive Suites (with spacious bed-, bath- and living rooms), through Luxury and Comfort options, to Standard Twin Bungalows perfect for budget-friendly holidays. he Franschhoek Country House and Villas is a charming gem in the beautiful Franschhoek Valley. This five-star hotel mirrors the French charisma that has made this town such a historically important spot for three centuries. Every feature of the hotel has been carefully crafted to give guests a genuine sense of being part of Franschhoek’s French heritage. The cobbled streets, fountains and old stone buildings make the establishment one of the most appealing, and finest, in the country. Four room types are available at the Franschhoek Country House and Villas. Many features are standard to all, including complimentary WiFi Internet access and air conditioning. The De Luxe Rooms are renovated portions of the historic manor house, and come complete with en suite bathrooms, lounges and private balconies, as well as all of the amenities one would expect to find in a hotel of this standing. The Luxury Rooms, as well as being more spacious, have underfloor heating, a private patio and a supremely comfortable lounge area. A delightful fireplace completes the picture. The Garden Cottages, which are child friendly, extend over two floors. Private patios and balconies mean that there is more than enough space for the whole family to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings. Finally, the Villa Suites are the newest and most luxurious offerings in the hotel. Each villa covers 100 m², and has a spacious lounge, dining room, fireplace, and two private balconies. To top off the retreat experience, the in-house spa offers a range of massage and beauty treatments. Full body massages, reflexology, body wraps, and facials are just the beginning – the hotel has also developed a number of signature treatments for both women and men. The spa is intimate and welcoming, and guests are assured

One of the country’s most acclaimed restaurants, the Monneaux provides exceptional fare at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Lunch taken on the fountain terrace is a delightful way to pass the afternoon, while dinner in the elegant manor house dining room makes it clear why the restaurant has won numerous awards over the years. For private dinners, the hotel’s underground cellar has a suitably exclusive feel to it. Surrounded by some of the very best South African wines, many made in the Franschhoek Valley, as well as a number of equally fine wines from overseas, guests can expect the same level of service and exquisite cuisine enjoyed by diners in the restaurant above. If exploring more of the region’s culinary pleasures is on your list of things to do, the hotel staff will book wine tastings and make reservations at restaurants around Franschhoek on your behalf, and the free shuttle service will take you there. he Haute Pierre Jourdan Belle Rosé derives its name, “beautiful rose”, from its elegant blush colour, which is achieved by carbonic maceration of the base wine. This extracts the elegant colour and the flavours of the Pinot Noir, but not the harsh tannins. The base wine then undergoes the traditional second fermentation inside the bottle, which yields the beautiful lively bubbles in the glass. The palate reveals a lively presentation of rich strawberry and cherry flavours derived from Pinot Noir - with an elegant dry finish. The Belle Rosé is best enjoyed with mussels, crayfish, prawns, and duck. The richness of the Pinot Noir grape complements these dishes wonderfully. There is no denying that the Belle Rosé is able to add an extra bit of romance to an intimate tête à tête.
Another perfectly romantic sip is the Pierre Jourdan Tranquille, a gentle elegant wine with a fragrant bouquet, fine fruit, and a dry finish. Its low alcohol makes it an ideal companion for a picnic or lunch on a hot summer’s day. The Pinot Noir portion of the blend lends the Tranquille its beautiful salmon colour. On the palate, the fruit and structure of the cultivar combine perfectly with the elegance and freshness of the Chardonnay. The wine is best enjoyed with asparagus, sushi, salads, a variety of Asian flavours, and other light meals. 46

he oldest wine farm in the Swartland Wine of Origin district, Allesverloren is located in the Riebeekberg ward on the slopes of the Kasteelberg near Riebeek West. Its location makes for full-bodied, hearty and fortified wines with excellent fruit concentration. The talent of Allesverloren cellar master Danie Malan - the fifth generation of Malans on the farm - was recognised quite early on when, in 1998, he was named Diners Club Winemaker of the Year for his signature wine, the 1996 Allesverloren Shiraz. While the estate is best known for its full-bodied, robust reds made in the traditional Old World style, this year, Malan is pleased to announce the launch of the Allesverloren 2014 Tinta Barocca Rosé, the second vintage of the rosé to be offered to the local market. According to Malan, the Tinta Barocca Rosé introduces the Portuguese varietal to a greater audience in South Africa. People are often too afraid to try a new wine, especially when the varietal is not well known in the area. Tinta Barocca shows beautiful characters of dark fruit, vanilla and chocolate, but by using the grape in a rosé style, wonderful flavours of ripe strawberries and cherries are brought to the fore. The sweet aromas of these berries can be enjoyed on the nose, and the palate offers a wonderful balance between these flavours and crisp acidity, making for a memorable finish. Winemaker Armand Lacomme explains that the wine and varietal show the uniqueness of the region, and the specific vineyards in which the grapes grow (with some dating as far back as 1958). The wine pairs well with fish, pasta, or Asian dishes. Its refreshing yet full style makes it the perfect companion after a hot day spent in the vineyards or lazy Sunday lunches enjoyed with Malan and his wife Juanita on their historic manor house stoep. The Allesverloren 2014 Tinta Barocca Rosé is available from the farm’s wine shop and selected retail outlets countrywide for approximately R60. For more information visit www.allesverloren.co.za.

A Family Legacy Text: Gisela Kruger Images Š Pappas on the Square

The current Pappas management trio favours a handson approach to the running of the restaurant, each contributing fresh ideas and perspectives while relying on their strong heritage as an extraordinary resource. Pappas cuisine is Mediterranean-inspired rather than exclusively Greek, which reflects the restaurateurs’ desire to satisfy the differing tastes of Johannesburg diners. However, according to Ria; one of the all-time favourites on the Pappas menu is the traditional Greek dish of kleftiko (slowcooked lamb) – an item for which patrons have been returning for years. The kleftiko is still prepared using the original recipe created by the Pappas family in Cyprus several generations ago. While success does not come without sacrifice and long hours, Pappas is a family business that values its staff, which translates into patrons being served with authentic generosity and warmth. "We place a lot of emphasis on the standard of service and the training of our staff, as most of them have been with us since Pappas' inception," explains Evros. “Pappas is not only an inheritance, but a legacy and a way of life. Our heritage is something that is entrenched in us; it is us,” concludes Ria. For more information visit www.pappasrestaurant.co.za.

mid the cluster of bistros and eating spots in Sandton lies one of Gauteng’s oldest and best-loved Mediterranean restaurants, Pappas on the Square. For nearly three decades, Pappas has embodied a cultural dining experience. It was in fact one of the first restaurants in the area to offer patrons live entertainment as well as quality food. It all started with the unveiling of Pappas in Kelvin in October 1987 by founder Athos Pappas, who saw the need for a family-friendly Mediterranean offering including home-style Cypriot and Greek cuisine. Pappas was the first restaurant to serve the popular steak on a hot rock. "It was a lively place – a celebration of Greek heritage," recall Ria and Evros, daughter and son of Athos, reminiscing fondly on growing up in the restaurant. Not afraid to adapt to new trends and shifting times, Pappas has moved four times over the past 20 years, finally settling in Sandton, the business hub of South Africa, in 1997. Athos believed in keeping the restaurant a family business, and handed over the reins to his children and son-in-law, Charles de Olim, in the late 2000s. Athos now resides in Cyprus, where he continues his family’s tradition of orthodox priesthood.

occa, the latest venture by restaurateur and sommelier Neil Grant and business partner Barry Engelbrecht (of Burrata fame), has opened on Cape Town’s most famous food street. Informal, Italian-inspired fare is served in a festive, contemporary space. The restaurant is already famous for “the best Neapolitan-style pizza in the city”. Executive Chef Annemarie Steenkamp, who was responsible for sister restaurant Burrata scooping the EAT OUT Italian Restaurant of the Year Award in 2013, has created exciting new, modern Italian dishes for the Bocca menu, inviting diners to order a number of plates to share at the table. Bocca (meaning “mouth” in Italian) is also known for its newly created “pizza sandwich”. Try a Panino for lunch – baked to perfection in the 485º C pizza oven – the pork belly, radicchio, fennel marmalade, and celeriac remoulade is just one of the mouthwatering options. At night the restaurant shifts gear to present a more sophisticated menu, while the deck turns into a cool sundowner spot overlooking the Bree Street action. It’s the perfect place to settle in and enjoy a glass of wine recommended by Neil, and selected from his small but creative wine list.

“Every year we celebrate with our graduates as they complete their training and establish this milestone in their careers,” says SA Chefs Academy owner Paul Hartmann, a renowned international chef in his own right. “For us at the Academy, this year is however especially significant. We are proud of the contribution we have been able to make to the industry over the past decade.” The new branding that will be rolled out across the organisation takes its lead from the re-invented logo. The new logo incorporates creativity and professionalism among its design themes along with the green hue signifying growth and prosperity. “When we launched the school in 2004, our vision was to create a world-class training facility, built on our own personal experiences, to equip students to be the best in their chosen fields. Looking back now, I think we can safely say we are achieving our goal.” Past students of the SA Chefs Academy have achieved a variety of positions and recognition. Among them are: • Food Editor, House and Leisure magazine: Raphaella Frame-Tolmie • Head Chef, Test Kitchen restaurant: Ivor Jones • Executive Chef, Cavalli Estate: Henrico Grobbelaar • Owner, The Creamery: Kate Schrire • Owner, Woodstock Bakery: Paul Cremer • Owner, Gusto Cafeteria: Melisa Clayton • Owner, The Lucky Baker (Pretoria): Pauli Coetzee In addition, the Academy’s first development student, Elias Kafi, is employed at the five-star Table Bay Hotel. In 2014 the Academy will take on four new development students. In terms of student achievements this year alone, these include: • Lauran Case and Josh Wiid, winners in the One&Only Reaching for Young Stars competition; • Kirsten Helleman winning the Unilever Junior Chef competition and representing SA on the National Culinary Team; and • Sven Adams taking third place in the Unilever Chef of the Year (senior category). Hartmann says these highlights, as well as the day-to-day performance of former students, contributes to the overall image of the SA Chefs Academy. “This year has seen a marked increase in block release students, which shows the faith that the industry puts in us. We are excited about the prospect of training chefs that have a huge passion for and commitment to the industry. This is very important to us and we hope to continue to work closely with hotels and restuarants at this level.” The reputation of the SA Chefs Academy has also attracted significant partnerships with leading companies, including Bosch, Patleys, Rialto, Ecolab, Tydstroom, Nulaid, Kerry (formerly Orley Products) and Olive Pride. The SA Chefs Academy incorporates a catering division and offers courses including: 1. Full time Diploma in Culinary Arts and Pastry through City and Guilds International 2. Block Release Courses (Aimed at industry chefs that wish to gain a formal qualification) 3. Certificate in Culinary Arts 4. Diploma in Food Preparation and Culinary Arts 5. Diploma in Pastry The SA Chefs Academy is based in Black River Park, Fir Street, Observatory, Cape Town where it trains professional chefs for the industry, including hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, food product developers and food stylists. ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. A Note for Smokers South Africa became one of the first countries in the world to ban smoking in public places in 2000 when it introduced its Tobacco Products Control Amendment Act. The Act prohibits smoking in restaurants, pubs, shopping centres and offices where there are no separate, enclosed smoking rooms. Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
