Cognates Program of General Education

*After meeting with his academic advisor to discuss his degree progress, Sebastian discovered he had the flexibility to add two more elective courses to turn his Arts & Humanities cognate into a philosophy minor.

A cognate is a set of at least three related courses. Students take one cognate in each of the three areas of knowledge: Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Arts & Humanities People & Society Our general education program lets you incorporate your interests into your curriculum and study what you love. Broadway performer who starred in the national tour of Hamilton

Joshua has been a professional performer for nearly two decades. He won a GRAMMY Award for his work on Into the Woods on Broadway and was twice nominated for a Tony Award for his role in The Scottsboro Boys and Violet His portrayal of Aaron Burr in the U.S. tour of Hamilton has been described as a “powerhouse performance…gives this dazzling, envelope-pushing show a beautiful gravity.” He has since played in Waitress on Broadway and Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration live on ABC

Dahlia saw an opportunity to make an impact in the medical field during her first part-time job in the industry. Using on-campus resources like The Launch Pad, she connected with experienced and knowledgeable mentors—mentors who were critical to the formation of her gene sequencing company, Panacea. Dahlia’s Panacea uses an AI platform to sift data and better understand and predict gene behavior. Patients leave with results that help physicians make more strategic decisions in their health care plans.

If you choose to submit, you may self-report your test scores on the Common Application. Applicants to the School of Architecture who do not provide test scores must submit a portfolio. All Frost School of Music applicants must complete an audition.

Merit Scholarships

All applicants are considered for scholarships when they apply for admission, regardless of financial need. Merit scholarships are based on a student’s academic accomplishments and our holistic review process. Students who apply by the November 1 deadline are considered for Premier Scholarships, which range from full tuition to full cost of attendance. miami.edu/scholarships

If you want to be considered for need-based aid, you must submit the items in the Financial Aid Checklist. Need-based aid is the difference between the total cost of attendance for one year and your expected family contribution.
