Cognates Program of General Education
& Humanities Cognate Introduction to Philosophy*
*After meeting with his academic advisor to discuss his degree progress, Sebastian discovered he had the flexibility to add two more elective courses to turn his Arts & Humanities cognate into a philosophy minor.
A cognate is a set of at least three related courses. Students take one cognate in each of the three areas of knowledge: Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Arts & Humanities People & Society
Our general education program lets you incorporate your interests into your curriculum and study what you love. Your cognates can be closely related or worlds apart. Above is just one example of how the cognates can work together.

Class of 2011 Founder and President of SeedOut
Pakistan’s first nonprofit crowdfunding platform, SeedOut works to alleviate poverty by empowering budding entrepreneurs through interest-free microfinancing and training. Since its founding in 2014, SeedOut has established more than 500 entrepreneurs— including women, transgender individuals, and people with disabilities, who typically have a hard time being approved for loans. In 2018, Zain was honored with the Commonwealth Youth Award in London for SeedOut’s philanthropic impact.
“ One of the most valuable things I gained from my education is how to think. It armed me with the ability to tackle completely foreign problems and devise innovative solutions. ”
—DAHLIA ATTIA-KING Biology, Class of 2012 Founder and CEO of Panacea
Dahlia saw an opportunity to make an impact in the medical field during her first part-time job in the industry. Using on-campus resources like The Launch Pad, she connected with experienced and knowledgeable mentors—mentors who were critical to the formation of her gene sequencing company, Panacea. Dahlia’s Panacea uses an AI platform to sift data and better understand and predict gene behavior. Patients leave with results that help physicians make more strategic decisions in their health care plans.
