An education that’s anything but general
Education works best when you have a stake in your learning. Here, your curriculum is set on your terms with our Cognates Program of General Education. A cognate is a set of three courses that share a common theme or focus. Your major and any minors also constitute cognates. Choose a cognate from each of the three Areas of Knowledge (Arts and Humanities, People and Society, and STEM) to shape an education that reflects the breadth and depth of your personal interests. Explore your options at cognates.miami.edu.
“ I used cognates to tailor my education and explore my major from a lot of different viewpoints. As a STEM major, I turned my Arts and Humanities cognate into an architecture minor, and my People and Society cognate into an ecosystem science and policy minor. All of those tracks provide a wider, more robust understanding of civil engineering.” —CHRISTOPHER

RESEARCH WITHOUT BORDERS
As a political science major, Iman Sami has a unique view of global relations. Guided by her advisor and first-year political science professor, Dr. Michael Touchton, she embarked on a written honors thesis research initiative that led her more than 8,000 miles from the University of Miami. In Azad Kashmir (the disputed region between India and Pakistan), Iman studies the effects that political limbo has on everyday life for its citizens. She has met with locals from all walks of life and recorded their experiences for her project—everyone from children to the elderly, even community leaders—and used their testimonies to write about how the international dispute affects their day-to-day life. She hopes one day to publish her findings and help raise awareness for the region’s people.

Marine science/geological sciences major Reid Jansen has his eyes turned toward the celestial bodies that join us in orbit around the sun. Working under assistant professor Dr. Adam Holt and graduate student Valeria Turino, Reid researches the geodynamics of one of Jupiter’s moons, Europa. Geodynamic modeling of Europa seeks to discover what lies beneath the surface of its thin icy shell. The theory is that the rigid icy crust of Europa could be subducting similar to the tectonic plates beneath our feet on Earth. If Reid’s research proves to be true, it could have greater implications for the feasibility of life within our solar system and the abundance of plate tectonics in our universe.

Chimaobim “Mobi” started working in research in his sophomore year under doctoral candidate Rosalia Parrino. Under her guidance, he began to explore other opportunities. Now under the guidance of Dr. Joseph Signorile, Mobi is already a three-time published researcher and in his fourth year of school. Working out of the Max Orovitz Laboratory, his research focus and interests include measures of performance using biofeedback tools, exercise adaptations, and biomechanics. He hopes to positively impact the weightlifting, physiotherapist, and physical therapist communities who deal with muscle function and injuries on a daily basis.
I have always been interested in the way the human body works both on a physiological and anatomical front. I made it a point to maintain my curiosity, and when I was introduced to the research world, I fell in love. I believe that research is a way to incite and quench curiosity. Research promotes critical thinking, creativity, and fosters an evidence-based lifestyle. ”
