The Coaching Staff Bryan Scales, Head Coach A native of Medway, MA, Bryan Scales enters his second year as head coach of the UMass Lowell men's soccer program following 11 years as the head coach at Cornell University (1998-2008). Scales' stay at Cornell was preceded by four years as an assistant with the Big Red (1994-98); two years as an assistant at Harvard (1992-94) and one season as an assistant at Plattsburgh State (1991-92) after a stellar career at Hartwick College. Scales is also a scout for the U.S. Men's National Team in the U.S. Developmental Academy and serves as an assistant coach with the U-15 boys national team. In the May of 2009, Scales helped lead the U-15 boys to a 10-day tour of Moenchengladbach, Germany. Additionally, Scales serves as the head coach of the New England Revolution U-16 squad, which he, alongside assistant coach Karl Spratt, led to the 2010 U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) Northeast Region Championship and an appearance in the USSDA national tournament in only its third year. For his efforts, Scales was named the 2010 U.S. Soccer Eastern Conference Coach of the Year. Scales enjoyed a plethora of honors during his years at Cornell. In 2001, He was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) New York Region Division I Coach of the Year and was a finalist for national coach of the year honors after leading the Big Red to a 9-4-3 season. That year, he led Cornell to the No. 22 ranking in the NSCAA Division I poll. Scales was also instrumental in guiding five players to All-Ivy League First Team status as well as NSCAA All-New York Region honors. Additionally, six players from his tenure enjoyed professional careers in Major League Soccer, USL First Division and Norwegian First Division. Among them is Scott Palguta, currently a center back for the Colorado Rapids. Scales' players excelled academically as well, as 10 were named to Cornell's 400 Club, which honors athletes with 4.0 grade point averages or higher. His 2007 squad vaunted a 3.3 grade point average and received the NSCAA Team Academic Award. After assistant coaching stints at Plattsburgh and Harvard, Scales became an assistant to then-coach Dave Sarachan, now the associate head coach of the L.A. Galaxy, in 1994 and helped Cornell from a 2-10-3 record in 1994 to a 15-2-1 clip, the Ivy League Championship and an NCAA Tournament bid in 1995. Scales was tabbed the head coach at Cornell after Sarachan joined MLS Champion D.C. United after the 1997 season. A 1991 graduate of Hartwick, Scales was a two-year starter in the midfield and defense and helped the Hawks to the 1987 and 1989 NCAA tournaments. Hartwick routinely ranked on top of the New York Region and spent much of the season ranked in the top 10 nationally. A four-year letter winner, Scales received his bachelor's degree in political science. During summers throughout college, Scales was a regular in the renown LASA League as well as the Cape Cod Amateur Soccer League. Previously, he was a standout at Newton North H.S., from where he graduated in 1986. Scales and his wife, Mindy, have three children: Aiden (10), Ciara (8) and Jack (6) and live in Nashua, N.H.

The Coaching Staff Christian Figueroa Christian Figueroa enters his fourth season on the UMass Lowell staff following an honor-filled career from 2003-06. One of the programs best-ever midfielders, he helped the River Hawks to a 47-17-14 record (.603), two NCAA Tournaments – including the quarterfinal round in 2003 – and two Northeast-10 Conference Tournament championships. Along the way, Figueroa was the 2003 NE-10 Freshman of the Year and went on to earn all-conference honors and NSCAA All-Northeast Region status three times, culminating with first team honors in 2005 and 2006. A two-year captain, Figueroa was one of 25 Division I, II and III players invited to tryout for the New England Revolution in February of 2007. He currently ranks 17th on UML's all-time scoring list with 12 goals and 14 assists (38 points). Outside of UMass Lowell's season, Figueroa is an active coach in the club circuit. Alongside former UMass Lowell assistant Marc Connolly, Figueroa helped lead the FC Stars U-18 boys team to the Massachusetts State Cup U-17 championship in 2009 and 2010, which included a trip to the Region 1 (Northeast) championship game. A graduate of North Andover H.S., Figueroa was a Cape Ann League allstar as well as an MIAA All-State and All-Eastern Mass standout. A three-year starter, he led the Scarlet Knights to the Cape Ann League championship in 2000 and 2002 and the MIAA Division II North final in 2001. A native of North Andover, MA, Figueroa lives in Lowell, MA.

Karl Spratt A product of the Manchester United Youth Academy, Karl Spratt enters his first year on the coaching staff and will oversee UMass Lowell’s goalkeepers. Spratt is also in his in his first year as the goalkeepers coach of the New England Revolution Youth Development Program, where he works alongside UMass Lowell Head Coach Bryan Scales. The two recently helped the Revs’ U-16 Team to its 2010 U.S. Soccer Development Academy Northeast Division title and an appearance at the USSDA national tournament in only its third year. Spratt is the third coach within the Revolution system to join UMass Lowell. Former standout Adin Brown served as an assistant in 2004 while T.J. Tomasso was on staff from 2005-06. Spratt currently holds his Football Association (FA) Level 1 and 2 coaching and Goalkeeping licenses as well as the NSCAA National Goalkeeping Diploma; He is also a certified instructor of fitness management, strength, conditioning, speed and resistance. Prior to coming to UMass Lowell, Spratt was an assistant goalkeeping coach in both the Sunderland FC and Darlington FC youth systems. He also served as goalkeepers coach at the University of Sunderland and University of Northumbria. As a player, Spratt was a member of the Manchester United Youth Academy from age 12 to 18. He was also a goalkeeper in the England Schools Development U-18 Squad as well as British University team from 2003-05. UMass Lowell opens preseason training on Aug. 18. The River Hawks open the season on Thursday, Sept. 2 at Dowling College, and open at home Saturday, Sept. 11 against the University of Bridgeport. A native of County Durham, England, Spratt is a graduate of the University of Sunderland, where he was a captain from 2003-05 and earned a degree in sport and exercise development. He lives in Providence, RI.
