2010-11 Season Preview

On The Job Training Reloaded with 13 new faces, the River Hawks will preach patience while staying in pursuit of the Hockey East crown. In sports, success is quantified by wins and losses, predicated on the expectations of what could have been. Realistically speaking, the 2009-10 season was a great success for UMass Lowell hockey. The River Hawks had back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2002, earned their highest finish in Hockey East (T-3rd) since 1995-96 and went 6-2-3 against NCAA Tournament teams. Despite all of that, coach Blaise MacDonald knows his team walked a fine line between good and great. “Well I think last season taught our team how slim the margin of error is and how important every second of every game is,” said MacDonald. “Essentially you can define those elements or they can define you.” “One overtime goal against Vermont or Maine could have led to an extraordinarily successful season, but unfortunately we weren’t able to capitalize. We still accomplished an awful lot last year and that’s what we focus on.” With that lesson in mind, UMass Lowell will look to reload on the fly while trying to push the program to the next level. The River Hawks return 14 players from a season ago, including points leader Scott Campbell and 2009 All-American defenseman Maury Edwards. Despite losing the services of 12 graduated seniors, UMass Lowell returns 48.2% of an offense that ranked sixth in Hockey East last season. Campbell enters the year with back-to-back team scoring titles and has 82 career points, the 58th most in program history. Even with their scoring punch still intact, the River Hawks will have to lean on the talents of 13 freshmen joining the squad, many of whom are expected to assume major roles during their rookie campaigns. “Patience has to be our biggest focus point,” MacDonald said. “We have 13 new players, two freshman goaltenders, four freshman defenders—that’s

really the core of your team.” That fact is exacerbated by the departure of four veteran defensemen and two senior goaltenders who played every minute of last season. “As we speak today it’s a bit of an unknown,” continued MacDonald. “But looking to the future that’s going to be the strength of our team. We really like the goaltending and defensemen we have, it’s just a matter of how quickly they can mature.” Helping the River Hawks mature will be the growing home-ice advantage at the Tsongas Center. Since 2007-08, home attendance has increased 37% and reached an full-season all-time high in 2009-10 with an average of 4,664 fans per game. Due in part to the record crowds, UMass Lowell carried an 11-5-1 record at home to tie the Tsongas Center record set in 2004-05. In an effort to grow that home-ice advantage further, the Tsongas Center has undergone vast remodeling this season. Upon entrance to the River Hawks’ rink, fans will notice a new video scoreboard, the relocated Talon Club Room and a brand new Pavilion Club Deck. The amenities that rival some of the best facilities in the country now line the Tsongas Center and promise to bring a whole new level of intensity to UMass Lowell home games. “The feeling and mood around the Tsongas Center this fall has been of amazing excitement,” said MacDonald. “Almost as if it’s a brand new beginning. Our fans deserve the best and they won’t be disappointed.” Now with the foundation laid for long term success, a program that has been building for the past few seasons is ready for the next chapter in its storied history. FORWARDS In what promises to be the team’s strength this season, The River Hawks return 10 forwards with over 600 games of combined experience. The group is comprised of three seniors, four juniors, two sophomores and seven freshmen. “Our forwards might be the best group of forwards we’ve had here for a long time,” said MacDonald. “Maybe the best since I’ve been at UMass Lowell. We lost some great forwards from last year, but guys are ready to step up and I’ve been very impressed with the freshmen on our roster.” Taking the reigns of UMass Lowell this season will be Campbell, wearing the ‘C’ after the graduation of three-year captain Ben Holmstrom. “Leadership skills are vital and usually are a missing element in a lot of teams that are good, but not great,” MacDonald said. “You can’t have leadership skills if you don’t have people that want to be led.” “I know for a fact that our team wants to be led, everybody understands that they need to move and pull in the same direction. Scott and our other captains have had the good fortune of playing with great captains in Ben Holmstrom, Jeremy Dehner and Barry Goers. It’s shared leadership for sure, but you can see the model that those guys operated under and we will continue on with that model.” Fellow forward and an alternate captain, Riley Wetmore embarks on a highly anticipated sophomore season. Thrust into the spotlight as a freshman, Wetmore played in all 39 games while scoring six goals and nine assists. “Riley is a great story,” MacDonald said of Wetmore. “His commitment to come here, how hard he worked and what a key role he played on a veteran team.” “Then he is voted by his peers, outgoing seniors as well as present players, as one of the captains. He received an awful lot of votes—that shows you the respect factor he has. Now as I see him going into his sophomore season, he has gotten much more comfortable, bigger and stronger. He carries himself with an air of confidence that I think it will translate into a great season.” While he didn’t take a leap forward from his eye-opening freshman campaign, junior David Vallorani enters 2010-11 coming off back-to-back 27-point seasons—scoring exactly nine goals and 18 assists each of the past two years. Vallorani is currently on pace to join the River Hawks’ 100-point club and produced some of the most exciting moments of 2009-10. In a 5-3 victory against Massachusetts on Dec. 5, the speedy forward joined Campbell

2010-11 Season Preview Arnold joins the River Hawks after two very strong seasons with the Waterloo Blackhawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). In 200910, Arnold netted 20 goals and 39 assists while serving as assistant captain. Prior to that, he had 20 goals and 12 assists in 2008-09. In his final season, Arnold was presented with the Curt Hammer Award for his excellence on and off the ice, including starting “Arnie’s Army” which raised money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Blackhawk County. Curry lands in Lowell after a stint with the Springfield Jr. Blues of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). As an assist captain in 2009-10, Curry had 50 points on 17 goals and 33 assists. Before that, he scored 15 goals and 41 assists for 56 points in 2008-09. Gaudet, younger brother of Boston University’s Russ Gaudet, made the jump to UMass Lowell directly from Austin Preparatory School. A captain for both his junior and senior seasons, Gaudet was named the Catholic Central League MVP in 2009-10. Arriving just after the departure of his older brother Ben, Holmstrom skated with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL for the past two seasons. In 2009-10, Holmstrom had 15 goals and 28 assists after netting 14 goals and 11 assists in 2008-09. McCoy is the son of former ULowell Chief Don McCoy (1980-84) and played for the Valley Jr. Warriors of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL). With the Warriors he had 10 goals and nine assists this past season. Local product Pendenza suited up for the Boston Jr. Bruins of the EJHL, scoring 49 points (22g, 27a) in 2008-09 and 48 points (21g, 27a) in 200910. He was twice named an EJHL All-Star. Lastly, Thompson was a prolific scorer with the Brockville Braves of the Central Junior Hockey League (CJHL). In 2009-10, Thompson had 87 points on 33 goals and 54 assists in just 57 games. He was named a CJHL FirstTeam All-Star. “I think we’ve got some guys that are going to be able to score some goals,” concluded MacDonald. “They shoot the puck well and have a nose for the net.”

Senior Defenseman Ryan Blair as one of only two active UMass Lowell skaters with a hat trick. Equally exciting can be the play of junior Michael Scheu, who was one of only two forwards to increase his point total last season. Despite battling injuries, Scheu followed his five-point freshman campaign with five goals and eight assists as a sophomore. Scheu’s defining moment came at Northeastern on Jan. 9, live on NESN. The Huskies erased UMass Lowell’s 4-1 lead, knocking the game into overtime. Streaking up the ice on a fast-break, Scheu roofed a pass from Kory Falite past goaltender Chris Rawlings to win the game as he crashed into the boards and was mobbed by his teammates. The play captured his explosive nature that makes him a threat on the ice at all times. Also struck by the injury bug last season was junior Matt Ferreira. Known for doing all of the little things on the ice, Ferreira had three assists in 23 games as a sophomore. Another junior who will look to take a step forward is Michael Budd. Budd followed up a strong freshman season of 10 points on five goals and five assists, with a lack luster eight-point (4g, 4a) sophomore year. Despite the statistic, the coaching staff feels the skills are there. “During a player’s junior year you see some big jumps,” added MacDonald. “I think Michael Budd is a prime example of a very talented player that could really have a breakout season.” A pair of seniors who will look to make the most of their final seasons are Patrick Cey and Jason DeLuca. In 29 games, Cey scored two goals and five assists for seven points, including the game-winner against eventual National Champions Boston College on Feb. 2. DeLuca has made a niche for himself as a speedy grinder, despite playing in just eight games this past season. With DeLuca in the lineup, the River Hawks posted a 4-2-2 record. An explosive sophomore who caught the team’s attention before being sidelined with an injury was Joe Caveney. The Fitchburg native played in just eight games, but was ranked second among UMass Lowell freshmen with a plus-7 rating while also scoring a goal and an assist on the year. Perhaps the forwards’ greatest strength this season is the talented crop of freshmen slated to see major minutes: Derek Arnold, Nick Curry, Cameron Gaudet, Josh Holmstrom, Derek McCoy, Joseph Pendenza and Shayne Thompson. “We have five or six freshmen that I think are going to play prominent roles this year and throughout their careers,” said MacDonald. “It’s a nice situation, it’s a competitive situation and it allows us to structure our lines with a more distinct purpose.”

DEFENSEMEN One of the more crucial areas of UMass Lowell’s team will be the defensemen, whom the River Hawks leaned on heavily last season. The team will be transitioning from a veteran defense, anchored by four seniors, to a inexperienced squad that could utilize three freshmen on any given night. The unit is comprised of two seniors, one junior, two sophomores and four freshmen. The pair of seniors are alternate captains Ryan Blair and Maury Edwards. Combined, the duo has played 225 games, which includes three Hockey East playoff berths and a run to the conference finals. Blair suited up for 38 of 39 games last year, scoring 11 assists and recording a plus-8 rating. While his statistics don’t stop people in their tracks, his six foot five inch frame does. “He has great skating skills, stick skills, passes the puck well and has become a real good player,” said MacDonald of Blair. “He plays against our opponents’ top players so I continue to see that as a stabilizing force for our team.” Perhaps the most important dynamic Blair brings to UMass Lowell can’t be quantified in the stat sheet. “Ryan is so well-liked by his teammates. Hockey is very important to him and he comes to the rink everyday with a smile on his face,” added MacDonald. “This is a business to us and we treat it like a professional organization and the players act accordingly, but you want to have fun too. We always make sure we’re having fun with our work and Ryan kind of leads us in that area as well.” Paired with Blair on defense is 2009 All-American Edwards. Armed with a powerful shot, Edwards will look to rebound from a difficult junior season in which he submitted career lows in points and goals. “Maury is his own toughest critic sometimes, as a lot of great players are,” MacDonald said of Edwards. “I think he has continued to grow and enhance his skills. He is very talented physically and I think he has learned a lot over his career here.” Throughout his career, Edwards has had a huge impact on UMass Lowell’s power play, scoring 18 man advantage goals. Entering this season, he is only five shy of setting a new program record for power play goals as a defenseman—a figure well within reach. “I am certain this will be his best season yet,” concluded MacDonald. “That doesn’t mean every shift is great, he’ll make his mistakes, but I think his resolve and his ability to bounce back will be at a new level this year.” The lone junior in the group is Tim Corcoran. The hard working Milton native played in only 11 games last season, but the River Hawks were 7-3-1 with Corcoran in the lineup. “Tim Corocran is a tremendous teammate,” MacDonald said. “He has

2010-11 Season Preview an unbelievable work ethic, attention to detail and is ready to get some ice time.” A boost to the young defense will be the move of sophomore Colin Wright from forward to defenseman. The Ontario product led all River Hawk rookies with seven goals. “Moving Colin will give us some experience back there,” said MacDonald. “He played defense in juniors and was very successful, but has played forward most of his life. We think he’s really going to help us back there with some grit and offensive ability.” The other sophomore intent to take on a larger role is Chris Ickert. Making his debut near the mid-point of the campaign, Ickert played in 14 games while battling injuries. As a freshman, he tallied three assists and a plus-3 rating. With plenty of ice-time up for grabs, UMass Lowell will look towards its four freshman defensemen to fill the void: Rob Badger, Daniel Furlong, William Rayner and Chad Ruhwedel. Like Gaudet, Badger made the jump straight from high school at Gunnery Preparatory. The son of former ULowell player Rob Badger (1984-86), Badger helped guide Gunnery to back-to-back West Championships in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council. Furlong arrives in Lowell after playing alongside Holmstrom with the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL. Last season Furlong potted nine goals and 10 assists for 19 points. In 2008-09, he tallied seven assists. Rayner suits up for the River Hawks after skating with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL. In 29 games with the Stars, Rayner had five assists. Prior to that, Rayner was a standout at Needham High School. Lastly, Ruhwedel joins UMass Lowell after two seasons with the Stampede alongside fellow freshmen Holmstrom and Furlong. In 2009-10, Ruhwedel had five goals and 17 assists while being named a USHL All-Star. “It’s a critical area for us because we will be very young and challenged in that area,” said MacDonald of his defense. “But I think this group is going to continue to develop.” “Maury Edwards and Ryan Blair have played great in a lot of big games in their careers—they’re clearly our leaders back there. We feel we have some flexibility and we’re really excited about our freshmen.” GOALTENDING Easily the most uncertain aspect of the River Hawks entering the season is their goaltending, but it is an area of quiet confidence for the coaching staff. In addition to the return of sophomores Michael Heffron and T.J. Massie, UMass Lowell has added a pair of highly touted freshmen in Marc Boulanger and Doug Carr. Whoever assumes control, they have big pads to fill with the departure of seniors Nevin Hamilton and Carter Hutton. The duo patrolled the crease for the past four seasons with eerily similar numbers while shattering a series of records along the way. As a senior, Hutton assumed control with an outstanding campaign that included a .928 save percentage and a 2.04 goals against average. The marks earned him a spot on the Hockey East Second-Team and he was crowned the Bauer Goaltending Champion. Hutton finished his career as the River Hawks’ all-time career leader in shutouts (10), goals against average (2.33) and tied with Hamilton for career save percentage (.913). In addition, Hutton also set the program’s single season record for save percentage. Heffron has yet to appear in a game for UMass Lowell, but joined the River Hawks after a stint with the Portland Junior Pirates of the Atlantic Junior Hockey League. A hard worker who pushes the team in practice, he will look to steal some time in net. Likewise, Massie played in two games as a freshman in 2008-09. He was 1-1-0 with a .870 save percentage and a 3.80 goals against average. Massie left the team mid-season to join the Tri-City Storm of the USHL, but has returned seeking the open spot. “T.J. Massie has a lot of talent,” said MacDonald. “He’s been through some trials and tribulations through his development, but has always shown tremendous resolve and work ethic.” The two most likely contenders for the goaltending spot are freshmen Carr and Boulanger, who share striking similarities to their predecessors. “This wasn’t by design, but they have similar skills to Hutton and Hamilton,” MacDonald remarked. Boulanger joins UMass Lowell after playing for the Olds Grizzlys of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). In 125 career games with the Grizzlys he held a 2.73 GAA and a .905 sv%. In 2009-10, Boulanger carried a 20-10-6 record with a 2.64 GAA and a .911 sv%. “Marc is a little bigger than Carter and takes up more net, but is very athletic,” evaluated MacDonald. “He gets post-to-post really well, comes out

Freshman Goaltender Doug Carr to challenge shooters, has quick hands and reflexes. He’ll just need to use that athleticism as a strength and not a weakness because sometimes you can be too athletic at this level, but I’m very happy with how he looks.” His counterpart, Carr, played most of his juniors career with the Cornwall Colts of the CJHL, where he earned Goaltender of the Year honors. In his final season he posted a 27-6-1 record with a 2.50 GAA and a .919 sv%. He was also named to the CJHL First-Team. “Doug has good size and is a verbal force out on the ice,” said MacDonald. “He moves the puck as well as Carter, has great offensive abilities and takes up a lot of net. He plays a little more like Nevin in that he is square to the shooter and is not a pure butterfly goaltender all the time because he tries to take what the game gives him.” In the coaching staff’s eyes, it is a open competition in the net. With four capable goaltenders, they are fit to let coach Ed Walsh mold his pupils into a long term strength at UMass Lowell—just as he has done before. “It’s a matter of any of our goaltenders getting on a roll because it’s a wide-open net,” concluded MacDonald. “I’m very confident in the job our goaltending coach Ed Walsh does and it’s just a matter of how quickly the maturation process is able to accelerate.”

Blaise MacDonald Head Coach

• 10th Season • 145-153-38

Blaise MacDonald enters his 10th year at the helm of the UMass Lowell Hockey team. He has compiled a 145-153-38 record in his nine years of work behind the bench for the River Hawks. No stranger to the UML hockey program, the native of nearby Billerica, Mass., was an assistant to River Hawk head coach Billy Riley, Jr., from 1988-1990, before being named the fifth head coach in the program’s 43-year history on April 6, 2001. “I think there is a terrific commitment from the University,” MacDonald said. “The culture of the workplace from the Chancellor to the athletic department is outstanding and strives for high performance. “The obvious connection with me and UMass Lowell is the fact that I grew up in Billerica. I grew up a fan of the Lowell Chiefs and players like Craig MacTavish and Dean Jenkins. This is a dream situation for me in that perspective, especially considering the exciting growth of the campus.” In his first season, MacDonald guided the River Hawks to a 22-13-3 record – their best performance since 1995-96. In Hockey East play, UML finished 12-9-3, good for fourth place and home ice in the Hockey East tournament. MacDonald put a system in place which had the River Hawks among the top four in Hockey East in several categories: team defense overall (first) and in HE (fourth); penalty kills overall (first) and in HE (third); overall team offense(fourth); and power play in HE (fourth). In 2004-05, MacDonald guided the River Hawks to a 20-12-4 record, their best since his first year at the helm. UML was ranked as high as seventh in the national polls, had one of the best power-play units in the nation and enjoyed a 14-game unbeaten streak from November 23 to January 28. The team also placed a record 17 players on Hockey East’s All-Academic team and produced Hockey East’s Superskills Rookie of the Year, Peter Vetri. In 2007-08 the River Hawks posted a 16-17-4 record, 10-13-4 in league play, and returned the the Hockey East playoffs after a one-year absence. The 16 wins doubled the team’s output from 2006-07, and improved in almost every statistical category — goals scored, goals against, power play percentage, penalty kill and save percentage. Sophomore left wing Kory Falite led Hockey East in goals (league games) and was named to a Hockey East Second Team All-Star. Freshman defenseman Maury Edwards was named to the Hockey East All-Rookie team, the third player under MacDonald’s watch to do so. As a team the River Hawks received the Charlie Holt Sportsmanship Award as the least penalized team in Hockey East. The River Hawks continued their development in 200809, winning 20 games for the third time under MacDonald, and reached the Hockey East championship game for the second time in program history. The River Hawks finished the 2008-09 season as one of the hottest teams in the country, going 12-5-2 over their last 19 games. In 2009-10, MacDonald followed with the program’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 2002. UMass Lowell finished with a 19-16-4 overall record, tied for third place in the Hockey

East conference and were ranked as high as third in the national polls. The season marked the River Hawks’ highest finish in Hockey East since 1995-96. MacDonald came to Lowell after a five-year head coaching stint at Niagara University where he founded the ice hockey program and brought the Purple Eagles to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal in only four seasons. Prior to Niagara, MacDonald served as an assistant coach and later recruiting coordinator and associate head coach at Boston University (1990-96) as well as an assistant at Princeton (1987-88) and Dartmouth (1985-87). A 1985 graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, MacDonald compiled an all-time record of 91-58-17 in five seasons at Niagara (.548), highlighted by a 30-8-4 overall clip and a 15-0-2 finish in College Hockey America in 1999-00. During the run, the Purple Eagles posted victories over Boston University, Colorado College and Rensselaer. In the first round of the 2000 NCAA Tournament, Niagara stunned 1998- 99 NCAA finalist New Hampshire (4-1) before falling to eventual national champion North Dakota (4-1). MacDonald was voted runner-up for the Spencer Penrose Award as National Coach of the Year. MacDonald started the Niagara program in 1996 with all freshmen and guided the Purple Eagles to a 16-9-2 record as a member of the Division III ECAC West. He was voted the ECAC West Co-Coach of the Year by his peers. He then led NU to a 14-10-3 clip in its second and final season in the ECAC West in 1997-98, which included winning the Conference tournament and regular season championships. Before joining College Hockey America, NU spent the 1998-99 season as a Division I independent and posted a 1712-3 record. The Purple Eagles opened the year with a stunning two-game effort at defending national champion Michigan, losing in overtime in the first meeting (6-5), and winning 2-1 a day later. NU also enjoyed victories over Ohio State, Merrimack and Rensselaer, along with wins over St. Lawrence and Colgate in the Syracuse Invitational Tournament. In 2000-01, The Purple Eagles posted a 14-19-5 mark

The Terriers also captured three Hockey East tournament and regular season championships and two Beanpot crowns. During the past 16 years, MacDonald has recruited and coached many players who have moved on to careers in the NHL. He played a key role in the development of players such as Adrian Aucoin, Rich Brennan, Greg Gardner, Mike Grier, Scott Lachance, Tom Poti and former River Hawk All-American goalie Dwayne Roloson. MacDonald has also coached NHL all-stars Tony Amonte, Keith Tkachuk, and 1998-99 NHL Rookie of the Year Chris Drury, who helped Colorado to the 2001 Stanley Cup title. As a player, MacDonald was an All-American defenseman in his senior season at RIT and led the Tigers to the NCAA Division II championship in 1983 and 1985. He helped RIT defeat ULowell, 5-1, in the 1983 Tournament semifinal at Tully Forum. During his career, MacDonald set former RIT records for career assists (106) and points (119) by a defenseman. He was inducted into the RIT Hall of Fame in 1991. Coaching Staff

Q & A with Coach MacDonald UMass Lowell finished with back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2002, what does that tell you about where the program is headed? We’ve gone through some challenging times where there has been some doubt about the future of our program and clearly that’s not the optimal way to recruit. Since Chancellor Meehan arrived on campus, our team and our success have mirrored his commitment to the program. We’re very privilege to be in that position and be shown that commitment and we’re grateful for the players that went through that. Last year’s senior class went through a lot of tough times, but they finished really strong. They laid a strong foundation of success that future team’s will try and live up to. I can tell you that our recruiting has been at its highest level since I’ve arrived. We’ve been involved with very talented players that we would not have been involved with before. When you come to a game there are huge crowds here, the energy level is great, we’ve been highly ranked nationally, done well in Hockey East and we’ve had success in TV games. Then you look at how well UMass Lowell is perceived academically and the University becomes a very attractive option. This is a brand new beginning for this whole community and we’re just a part of that.

The River Hawks transition from a veteran squad to a young team, what changes in your coaching style? Patience, patience, patience. I think confidence is such a critical part to an athlete’s and team’s success. It’s easy for a coach to strip that confidence without even knowing it. We need to have an upbeat and enthusiastic environment with very clear goals, in both the short term and long term. The challenge is to live within the world of idealism and realism and push that limit the best you can while still being realistic. There are no feel good games in this league—if you lose two games in a row, you may think you’ll never win again—so we have to guard from pessimism. We’ll try to keep an upbeat attitude this season.

How do the changes to the Tsongas Center help the program? It just speaks to the commitment to the hockey program and to providing Division I athletics to this community. Now when you come into the Tsongas, the engagement of the student body, the fans, the kids in the stands, the alumni—it will be at an astronomically new level. I think when people come to the game they’re going to be wowed when they step into the Tsongas Center.

2009-10 Media Guide

Hockey East has produced three consecutive National Champions, how does that affect a growing program? Playing in Hockey East is great because you always want to play against the best. It gives your players a level of experience they can’t gain anywhere else and we think if the tide rises, so will our boat. Last year was a good example. We played Boston College three times and they only scored four goals in three games—whereas they blew out almost everyone else en route to a National Championship. We beat them twice and that gives us tangible experiences that we can build on.

What will be the River Hawks’ greatest strength in 2010-11? As I look at our team now, our forwards look really good. We’ll be able to roll out 12 forwards in a game that will be able to compete and will allow us to have flexibility in our line match-ups. Also, having a young team, we will thrive on the enthusiasm they bring and their innocence. For younger players, they don’t get anxious because they don’t know any better—they’ll just go out and play.

What impact will new assistant coach Darryl Green have on the program? I’m really happy for Darryl, I had the privilege of coaching him for his last two years at UMass Lowell. He had a lot of success as a student-athlete here, won a lot of big games and he has a lot of patience. Darryl has a great outlook and a tremendous passion for the game. He is the ultimate ‘rink rat’ and really loves hockey at all levels. Players see that and gravitate towards him. Additionally, Darryl comes from a high school teaching background. He understands the steps and pragmatic plan to teaching young people.

Jerry Forton enters his second season with the River Hawks as an assistant coach after spending 13 years as a former assistant and associate head coach at Niagara University. While serving as the primary recruiter, Forton will work with the development of the defensemen. Forton served as an assistant with Head Coach Blaise MacDonald at Niagara from 1996-2001. “Jerry is very familiar with my coaching philosophy and style,” said MacDonald, who will enter his ninth season this fall. “He compliments my strengths and weaknesses. “Most importantly, Jerry brings a tremendous wealth of experience, having coached at the Division I level for 14 years,” MacDonald added. “He has coached in three NCAA Tournaments. He has coached and recruited players who have been Hobey Baker candidates and has done a tremendous job without some of the resources we provide student-athletes here at UMass Lowell.” A former soccer/hockey standout at the University of Buffalo, Forton began his hockey coaching career with the inception of the program at Niagara in 1996 where he remained until last season. During his tenure, he helped guide the Purple Eagles to NCAA Tournament bids and College Hockey America (CHA) Tournament titles in 2000, 2004 and 2008, as well as CHA regular season championships in 1999-2000, 2005-06 and 2006-07. A 1986 graduate, Forton was a member of the UB hockey team from 198286, serving as an assistant captain his junior and senior years. Simultaneously he was a four-year goalkeeper on the Bulls soccer team and ranks third among all-time leaders in career goals against average (1.39) and wins (19). Forton was a three-time SUNY Center Conference standout and the Most Valuable Player of the conference tournament as a junior. He was also named

to the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) All-America Team as a junior and senior. Forton earned his law degree from UB in 1989 and opened a law practice in Buffalo. He also spent six years (1990-96) as an assistant with the Bulls men’s soccer team and was inducted into the UB Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. A fitness enthusiast, Forton has twice competed in the National Ironman Triathlon Championship. A native of Buffalo, he has served on the board of directors for two charities: the Early Childhood Foundation and Sea Fever, Inc., which provide funding and craftsman opportunities to disadvantaged children in inner city Buffalo. Darryl Green, a former River Hawk defenseman and head coach at Nashua High School North, enters his first season with UMass Lowell. Green will work with the defenseman, have input into the River Hawks’ special teams and support Jerry Forton with recruiting efforts. “Darryl brings an unparalleled level of passion, commitment and understanding of what it takes to be student-athlete at UMass Lowell,” said MacDonald. “Even more importantly, he knows what it takes to be a Division I hockey player.” “Darryl brings great experience having been a successful high school head coach and working with our staff three years ago in a volunteer role as the Director of Hockey Operations. In addition, he has great knowledge of the way we play defense and will work closely with our young defensive core.” Prior to joining the River Hawk staff, Green had been teaching at Nashua High School North for the past five years and spent last season as the head coach of the Titans’ ice hockey program. “I wanted to be a college hockey coach and what better place than where I went to school,” said Green. “When the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to be apart of this program again.” “I’m excited to work with the defense and the power play units. As a

coaching staff we will have them prepared to win every game.” A 2003 graduate of UMass Lowell, Green earned his degree in Liberal Arts. As a member of the River Hawk hockey team, he compiled 46 points on 13 goals and 33 assists, despite sitting out his freshman year. The team enjoyed its greatest success during his junior season as UMass Lowell posted a 22-13-3 record and reached the Hockey East semi-finals. After college Green played professionally for two seasons, skating with the Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League in 2003-04 and the Pee-Dee Pride of the ECHL in 2004-05. Green then went onto serve as the Director of Hockey Operations for the River Hawks in 2007-08. Before attending UMass Lowell, Green starred for the Chatham Maroons of the Western Ontario Junior Hockey League, WOJHL, leading them to back-toback WOJHL Junior `B’ Championships in 1998 and 1999. Green was voted as the league’s Defensive Most Valuable Player for the 1997-98 season. A native of Fairview, ONT, Green currently resides in Milford, NH with his wife, Nikki, and his daughter, Carly, 2.
