After the absence of traditional faceto-face classes and two academic years of no physical student mobility, the University of Mindanao finally reopened the resumption of the International Student Exchange Program for inbound and outbound exchange students starting this 2022-2023 academic year.

During the time of COVID-19 pandemic, various webinars and meetings were held by UM Davao to accommodate all inbound and outbound exchange students with its partnered universities tackling the processes of the International Student Exchange Program and procedures to be done after the restrictions of the pandemic will be lifted.

As the blended learning, especially face-to-face classes restarts this academic year, the University of Mindanao welcomes the inbound exchange student from Kainan University of Taiwan (KNU Taiwan), Ms. Saki Sasaki who arrives Thursday, August 4, 2022.

With the assistance of the university, she was shown around the city for a tour and a meet and greet activity with the university departments and officers after her mandatory quarantine.

“It is my personal choice to study here at the University of Mindanao. They have a partnership with KNU and are known for their webinars and programs offered by both universities. It was a safe trip. It is also great to see the university face-toface and to meet people personally. It is a fun, fun experience”, Ms. Sasaki stated during an interview.

After two years of virtual graduation ceremonies, the University of Mindanao (UM) conducted a face-toface graduation ceremony, with a total of 1025 students from 11 departments marching their way to get their diplomas as eligible graduates of the academic year 2021-2022 during the 76th Commencement Exercises held at SMX Convention Center last October 19, 2022. There were a total of 106 graduates from the Professional Schools, 144 graduates from the College of Business and Administration Education (CBAE), 106 graduates from the College of Arts and Sciences Education (CASE), 306 graduates from the College of Teacher Education (CTE), 80 graduates from the College of Engineering Education (CEE), 32 graduates from the College of Hospitality Education

(CHE), 37 graduates from the College of Computing Education (CCE), 56 graduates from the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE), 112 graduates from the College of Accounting Education (CAE), 27 graduates from the College of Architecture and Fine Arts Education (CAFAE), and 19 students from the College of Health and Sciences Education (CHSE).

Dr. Eugenio S. Guhao Jr., UM’s Chief Academic Officer, spoke on behalf of the entire University of Mindanao when he expressed his gratitude and honor to all of the graduates, particularly to their parents, whose immeasurable contributions were crucial to their success today and the development of the country.

The Inter-School Accounting Quiz Bowl is an annual event hosted by the PICPA- Davao City Chapter. It aims to uphold academic excellence and give accounting students a platform wherein they can showcase their knowledge and creativity in solving problems in their field. Questions were categorized into three levels, the Easy, Average, and Difficult levels, wherein they were only allotted a limited time to solve and answer a certain number of items. In case of a tie, competitors are given clincher questions to break the deadlock and declare a winner.

Each participating school is allowed to send three maximum students enrolled in programs like BS Accountancy, BS Management Accounting, BS Internal Auditing, and BS Accounting Information Systems to join the two events.

Other participating schools in the event are Ateneo de Davao University, Philippine Women’s College of Davao, and Malayan Colleges Mindanao.

exchange program at the University of Malaya in Malaysia under the Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) program, while, one student from BS Electronics Engineering had fledged his 6 weeks diploma course at the University of Texas, USA, on Friday, September 16, 2022.

UM CHORALE KICKS OFF 2ND GRAND CONCERT AT TAGUM

Philippines’ pride University of Mindanao Chorale (UMC) held their 2nd Grand Concert with the theme, “Padayon - Ikaduhang Pagsubang” at the Historical Cultural Center, Tagumpay Theater, Tagum City, last September 11, 2022, in partnership with the City Government of Tagum, the Music Capital of the South.

In the said event, UMC showcases its repertoire presented during the Taipei International Choral Festival, upbringing Philippines’ music and culture led by Choirmaster Mr. Timothy Paul Atencio.

UM Chorale President Charlz Kenneth Tumamac states that the intention for the said performance is the promotion of the nation’s arts and culture.

“Our main reason is to promote the music and culture of our country through cultural singing and showcase our repertoire in the region,” said Tumamac.

A total of 18 songs were performed in the one-and-the-half concert. It started with Avinu (Our Father), arranged by Eudenice Palaruan, followed by other classical and liturgical genres like Agnus Dei by Ian Gabriel Corpus.

Pieces such as “Bahay” by Robert Delgado and Jeffrey Beunsuceso’s “Walang Natira” was also staged by the said chorale, which exhibited the country’s social issues and current societal events under the genre of contemporary.

In the latter part, the chorale sang the “Three Kalinga Chants” of Nilo Alcala and Eudenice Palarua’s “Koyu No Tebelul” highlights the cultural and traditional side of the country’s different tribes.

Around 250 audiences jammed on the crowd’s favorite “This is Me” version, and the final piece, “Listen,” officially ended the concert.

Tumamac added that the concert paves the way to generate funds for future community engagements and projects and serves as the means for farewell as they bound to a new repertoire.

“Although I am proud to say that we have successfully aced our concert series. It is unfortunate that we have decided to say our farewells to our current repertoire,” Tumamac stated.

As UMC fans await, the chorale prepares for a new repertoire, moving forward as instruments for music and arts of the Southern Islands.

UM-CHS ADMINISTERS VACCINATION ROLL-OUT INSIDE THE INSTITUTION

The University of Mindanao’s Center for Health Services conducted a COVID-19 vaccination and booster roll-out inside the institution, in partnership with the Davao City Health Office-United States Agency for International Development (USAID) at UM Matina and UM Bolton Gymnasium last August 24–25.

The USAID provided the 1st and 2nd dose series and 1st and 2nd dose booster shots to students, staff, and professors of the university to lower the risk of COVID-19 infection inside the institution.

“It was a successful activity by the CHS (Center for Health Services) and CHO (City Health Office) as we were able to save hundreds of lives during that 2-day event,”

Isiah James Francisco said, the Head Nurse of the UM-CHS. In Addition,

there are 841 students from the university who were vaccinated and received booster shots, with 566 students from the Matina campus and 275 students from the Bolton campus.

Denver Saraceno, a fourth-year BS Chemical Engineering student at the University stated:

“Our country has school vaccination requirements to mitigate the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases like COVID-19; thus, it was a great initiative of the University of Mindanao–Center for Health Services to seek assistance from USAID (Davao City Health Office) by implementing a vaccination roll-out.” where he also got his booster shot as part of the vaccination campaign.

The United States helped the Davao City Health Office to create a strategy for providing rapid, accessible, and

free COVID-19 services. They offered COVID-19 triaging, testing, contact tracing, monitoring, and management in an effective and efficient manner.

“USAID’s support in increasing capacity in case detection and testing is evident through the dispatch of mobile swabbing teams and the provision of testing kits and supplies, which now includes the deployment of vaccination teams to far-flung areas,” Department of Health Assistant Secretary Dr. Roy B. Ferrer said during the handover and launching of Davao City’s community-based COVID-19 response. Head Nurse Francisco added that the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) plans to have another set of vaccination drives in all universities and colleges in Mindanao to achieve herd immunity, especially for the learners.

My group mates and I are planning on how to report “agrarian reform” in GE8 inside the classroom. While in the middle of the discussion, I jokingly said that to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor, we must eat the rich. Everybody laughed except for one person who argued that it was offensive because I generalized that all farmers are poor. I was about to make a retort, but I restrained myself because it might be a sensitive topic for that person.

As the public embraced the new normal, the educational sector is slowly opening its doors to face-toface classes. Along with this, the university announced the official blended class schedule for the school year 2022-2023. It is a combination of face-to-face classes and online learning.

Upon hearing this announcement, several students expressed their sentiments, saying that it is too early to conduct the blended learning, knowing there are still active cases of COVID-19 and the threat of Monkeypox. However, some show

Disrespecting any culture, race, minority, or even cracking a dark humor joke will cause you to be canceled regardless of what degree the insensitivity is within the context. You will be labelled as an ableist, racist, a homophobe, an enabler— and the list goes on. While can cel culture a good reminder that we must think what will come out of our mouths,

Back to my anecdote, my statement was supposed to focus on the anti-rich to lessen the social class gap. However, my classmate views it from a different angle, thinking I was talking about the farmers and how poor they are. Evidently, jokes can be interpreted in various ways, and they could be either humorous or harmful. Humor is good as it gives us comical relief. However, we should instill in our minds that in every joke or even in small conversations, we should tread lightly and

think before we speak. Consider who your audience is and how much more or less amount of humor is needed to form a joke. It is a celebration that we have evolved and realized it is a mistake to joke anything around regardless of how sensitive the topic is. Remember that words may inspire, destroy, or can make a person laugh. People should be critical enough to distinguish between harmless and offensive jokes. Otherwise, I’ll be charging you guilty for the death of humor. Please do not cancel me after writing that punchline.

Currently, we face the most prominent concern of how students today have become so entitled and sometimes disrespectful to their teachers; and as teachers what should they employ to address this issue?

Knowing students of today are given full protection and privilege compared to as before.

In the Philippines, we are taught with different educational management or classroom handling; it simply depends on the teacher which one is effective.

Personally, I be lieve that by organizing the school’s disci-

plinary procedures and teaching students what forms of behavior are expected of them and what types are prohibited, a school discipline policy can assist in avoiding and controlling problems with student behavior. However, such regulation comes with built-in restrictions.

DAVAO CITY LIBRARY AND INFORMATION CENTER OPENS NEW FACILITY

With a mission to serve the general public’s education and literacy, Davao City Library and Information Center (DCLIC) launched its five-story state-of-the-art public library on July 15, 2022, to all Davaoeños and visitors.

DCLIC not only provides resources, educational materials, and scientific publications which aid students and researchers in pursuing their scholarly endeavors but also a conducive space for learning.

“I had a great time visiting Davao’s newest and grandest library. I love the building so much—perfect for study purposes, concentration, peace of mind, focus, research, reading, and chilling,” Jea Piencenaves, a third-year student at the University of Mindanao, said.

A library cafe is on the ground floor alongside the newspaper and periodicals column. On the other

hand, a hybrid learning space for children is on the second floor. The third and fourth floors offer an area for formal reading, conference room and Information Technology respectively. Lastly, an organic garden is on the roof deck.

“If I am going to evaluate the whole place, that would be 100/100. I would highly recommend everyone to visit Davao city library,” she added.

Aside from that, it is a place where individuals may collaborate and brainstorm ideas effectively.

Another visitor of the library, Seiryl Dumagunot from the University of Mindanao, shared how the city library helped individuals to utilize a good learning environment.

“I do believe that a good learning environment factors the way how students learn. Since Davao city library opens its doors for everyone, it helps those individuals, like me, utilize a good

learning environment— when going to the school library or when there are no classes that appear inconvenient,” she said.

For a student like Seiryl experiencing difficulties with studying due to environmental constraints, the project is of greater importance and has helped learners in all aspects.

“As a student who unfortunately does not have a silent and peaceful place to study, this project is effective for me on the grounds that I have a place now to run when I need to do and finish academic activities productively,” Seiryl expressed.

Furthermore, those who need assistance with online registration for the NBI or PRC (National Bureau of Investigation or Professional Regulation Commission) can visit the library. It is open from Monday to Friday at 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., located at C. Bangoy Street, Poblacion District, Davao City.

In an interview with Professor Emmanuel Marx Cuizon, he expressed how the pandemic affected the lives of art practitioners amid the situation. Hence, a few UM Fine Arts alumni and non-alumni initiated and formed the “Palikata,” which stands for “Padayun Likha Kanunay Tanan,” which signified their grit to withstand any adversities. LIFE’S HIDDEN BEAUTY. Art is not only pleasing to the eyes, but once you fully grasp its meaning, it satisfies the deepest corners of the soul.

Amid the grayscale world of abandoning one’s culture and history lies the indigenous people eager to sustain their tribal roots and maintain their cultural identity. With their intricately woven clothes, ritual songs and chants, and firm beliefs, they remained bamboo in a destructive storm— bent but not broken.

One of them is Krezyl Joy Ungab, Bagobo-Klata’s Biyya or Hiyas in the recently concluded Kadayawan Festival, who also bagged the Hiyas ng Kalambuan title. Krezyl is a 4thyear student taking up a Bachelor of Physical Education at the University of Mindanao. She strides the campus halls with her radiant smile and dangling accessories that showcase her tribe’s intricate craftsmanship.

“I want to strengthen the leadership and involvement of my fellow indigenous people (IP) youth in the community because I want to be an instru-

ment to spark their eagerness and burning passion in preserving the tribe,” she expressed.

As we can see buoyant children and graduate students dreaming high as the sky, behind is a woman who has sacrificed more than herself, her dreams, and happiness just so they

could build a bright future for their children—a woman like my mother.

With their sparkling eyes and soft smile, we often do not recognize the glistening tears behind their facade. They can build a wall greater than the wall of China just so their children could not see their downfall. Oftentimes they masked their pain so no one could see their struggle in raising a loving home.

The Hiyas ng Kadayawan is just one of the ways the city can support the indigenous tribes in our region and continuously recognize their significance in the country’s rich culture, history, and heritage.

Indeed, a mother’s love could conquer anything for her children. A love that will be brought to infinity and beyond. No matter how rough the road is, they will walk and be with their kids until the end of their journey.

As she said: Never be ashamed and embarrassed by being in the tribe because being a warrior is such a great honor. With that, her crown weighs heavier than it is as she also carries the glint of hope and the future of her tribe— for better days.

said. Looking back at those times when my mother went to everyone to borrow money just so I could take my exam disheartens me but, at the same time, motivates me to pursue my studies. She had to conquer everything and brave life’s hurdles for me to keep up with school activities and other necessary payments. Just by that, I know that the ‘love’ one seeks to find meaning can be defined by the unconditional labor my mother does mundanely for us—a timeless treasure that is one of a kind.

Saki Sasaki, a 22-yearold student at Kainu University in Taiwan, grew up in a sheltered environment in Miyagi prefecture in Japan with her parents and two siblings. As a child, Saki described growing up a little differently than her sisters. Her bubbly and optimistic personality radiates through her with everything she does, and she is well aware of the things she wants to do from the beginning. For this reason, she pushed through with her goals in life and is now one step closer to her future…by stepping back.

Since Saki’s goal has been to learn the English language and become proficient at it for her plans. Therefore, when it was time for her to choose her college school, she was torn and frustrated as none of the schools she considered in Japan could cater to her needs. Still, she became even more assertive

Story of Seeking in a Foreign Land

“I’m really considering which university I would go to because I only considered Japanese universities— so I was frustrated. But my parents know about my future goals, so they helped me look for an opportunity,” Saki detailed. Deep in her heart, her guts tell her that she was not meant to stay there.

After a thorough search, they finally decided to let Saki study abroad, giving her a greater opportunity to study English. So, she went to live in Taoyuan City, Taiwan and took an AB English program at Kainu University. As she persistently followed her goals in a foreign country, Saki planned to ace both her English and Mandarin language skills. However, after three years of studying in Taiwan, she was not content with the outcome yet. Although she learned to speak Mandarin fluently, her English speaking skills are yet to be developed.

“When I was in

Taiwan, there were not many opportunities to speak in English,” she said. So, she continued her quest to reach her goals and decided to go to further lengths as an exchange student in other countries.

“I told my teachers about my goals and asked for help to realize them. Then, I was given an opportunity to go to America and Australia, but I can’t afford the tuition,” she added. After a patient search, her teacher recommended one of their partner schools in the Philippines for her academic endeavors—the University of Mindanao. Right then and there, Saki knew it was the best choice as Filipinos are known to be good at English. However, she was about to hear disheartening news.

“They said my graduation would be delayed if I choose to go to UM. I am in fourth grade in Kainu but in UM, I would be in third grade,’’ Saki said. Additionally, the thought that her parents will need to pay her

KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL: THE KING RESURGENCE

August is a month of culture and diversity among Dabawenyos. It is a season of vibrance and festivity of the rich history of the whole city of Davao. Native folks who came from different parts of the mountain town were delighted to be in the burgh and prepare their native and culture-oriented huts, which are usually arrayed on Magsaysay Street. An alley that would turn into

a conventional museum every time they commemorate its proudest festival –the Kadayawan Festival of Davao City. This is one of the biggest celebrations of the town, where people are gathered together to revere the strong culture and undying tradition of the city.

Unfortunately, the grand celebration needs to pause due to the health insurgencies around the globe caused by the pandemic COVID 19.

Long story short, Saki flew thousands of miles to Davao City, Philippines, and started her journey in finally realizing her goals. So far, in her one-month stay in the country and at the University, she has been enjoying it to the fullest. From eating local foods to attending local festivals with her friends, she is assured that she is getting the experience she anticipates. As she is expected to stay at UM for two semesters, she also wants to leave her mark on the university.

“When I came here, many people taught me their language, so what I can do is also teach them about Mandarin and Nihongo language and culture. So there will be a cultural exchange within the University”, she said with utmost excitement.

At the moment,

Saki plans to improve her English skills and try to learn Bisaya and Tagalog as well. Moreover, she encourages the students in UM to try to expand their search for opportunities to reach their goals as well.

“I think the students in UM study very hard for their education and accomplishment, as well as in student activities that develop their skills. I think they are wonderful at that.’’ She also explained that the more she learns one’s language and culture, the more she can communicate with people; in that way, she can get a wider view of life. That motivates Saki to continue studying—the wonders of seeking many things.

Saki’s story is just one of the thousand narratives people can relate to. Wherein we must brave the hurdles of accomplishing the dreams in our hearts that often greet us in the most possibly challenging way. However, like Saki, be assertive of your goals and expand your perspective. Seek your own story of success and fulfillment, even if it is a step behind or across oceans.

The colorful parade accompanied by loud and enticing music was suddenly solemnized by silence, and only the wind could be seen dancing around. The thousands of tourists who came from different parts of the world were not allowed to witness extravagant and word class entertainment again. And the so-called king of all festivals seemed to rest and was never seen.

er, with the gradual recovery from the pandemic and the moderation of the rules around the country, the symbol of bravery and resilience, which is the Philippine Eagle, has spread its wings and delivered a message of hope to the villages and islands all across its region. The music of culture, the dance of tradition, and the color of diversity have echoed. The second week of August was this year’s 37th Kadayawan Festival with the theme “Kasikas sa Kadayawan,” highlighting the undying unity and strong bond

between its eleven magnificent tribes. Moreover, the most awaited floral float parade was back on track. Floats crafted with exquisite and colorful flocks of flowers, the town alleys became filled with colors once again. Like gems, the beauty of Dabawenyas stood out after crowning the new Hiyas ng Kadayawan 2022. Truly, the spirit of Dabawenyos is stronger than anything else, and nothing can hinder the Kadayawan celebration to reclaim its throne, the King of Festivals.

You may not realize it yet, but life’s greatest journey is about to begin. You’ll walk wide-eyed and eager to discover what awaits you, and you’ll leave with enlarged knowledge and a full heart.

You will grow in ways you never imagined were possible or necessary throughout your time in college, which is an incredible and remarkable period. New acquaintances, instructors, and peers that you’ll encounter will help influence your time there. Your four years in col- lege will be supported by those pals. They’ll be there to study with you, go out to lunch with you, and yes, even extend invitations to a few events.

Your campus is vast and

intimidating, and you will most likely become lost... frequently. But by the end of your stay, strolling through those walkways and corridors will be a cakewalk because you’ll already know the place inside and out. It will be more than a college campus to you; it will be your home. It’ll be where you spend hours in the library memorizing equations and preparing for that looming midterm. The numerous food stops on campus will be where you stop for a morning bagel on your way because you didn’t have time to get food from your own kitchen in a rush to get to class.

Four years of college isn’t about coming into the campus and leaving four years later with a degree in hand. It’s the setting, the parties, the friends you make, the events you attend, the

professors you meet, and so much more. We may not have had the best start, but we must make the best of it.

So, future college students, pay attention. This is where your greatest life journey begins. This is where you will make some of your best memories and discover new things. Take it all in and appreciate it. The statement is cliche for a reason, but it genuinely does go faster than you imagine, and you’ll be sad when it’s done.

A new decade, a year of transi- tion, a new beginning—just not what we anticipated. But we continue to have hope for what comes after, right?

Plant longer roots to harvest a fruitful gift. As we dream of becoming successful, we aim for the best spot in the future. The journey to success is a source of inspiration for others. Hard work and perseverance, dedication, and discipline were his keys to top the most prestigious licensure board examination for criminologists, and as he climbed to the top, he brought honor to the entire university. Mr. Lyen Carel Togonon Garcia passed the examination, obtaining the highest rank with a 90.70% rating. His journey is truly an inspiration to the UMiano.

Have you ever envisioned yourself destined to obtain the highest rank in the Criminology Board Examination?

Yes, before I started my rigid review, I only have one goal, not just to ranked 1 in the board exam but to get the highest rating in the entire history of the Criminologist Licensure Examination, so even though I can’t achieve it, surely I will land top 1 in the said exam.

That’s how I was trained back then, to always aim for the highest spot. So I already conditioned my mind, that at the end of the day, the only result I am expecting is either having the highest average in the history of CLE (which I failed) or the Top 1. Landing rank 2-10 or a passer was never an option. Further, I wrote ”CLE TOP 1‘on a piece of paper and attached it beside my graduation picture, and posted it in front of my study table. It helps, especially when I feel so exhausted and about to give up, I just look at it, and eventually, I got reminded of my goal in the end.

Besides, since I graduated Cum Laude, people around me (the college, review centers, classmates, family, etc.) already envisioned me to Ranked 1 in the exam, maybe because previous topnotchers from our college department don’t have any academic achievements yet they were still able to ace the exam. Further, I realized that the exam was not the only battle I am facing, but also how I am going to prove to these people that they were right in believing in my capabilities. That’s a challenge, good thing is, I was able to manage it, the pressure and expectations made me even stronger and more motivated.

How does it feel that you are now back inside the campus? Like, you can now hear the laughter of your friends and palpitations during face-to- face oral recitations? Imagine you are one step closer to your dreams. But, at the same time, a step away from leaving.

I know these are the thoughts that keep on running inside your mind as the classes start for the new school year. You are happy, but you do not know if you are genuinely happy. You have mixed emotions. You are torn because starting the school year means graduating. And graduating means leaving this university, the peo- ple, and the environment you grew up with for the past four years. However,

you are excited about what life has next to offer when you enter the corporate world.

My dear, I know this is too hard to imagine. But I want you to remember the reasons why you entered this univer- sity. You have dreams. Dreams that you uphold for years. Yes, it is not easy to let go of the people who helped you in this college journey, but this is the reality. In different phases of life, you have to grow and start your new beginnings separate- ly.

The pandemic robbed you of your supposed to be full of memories college journey. Like those face-to-face study sessions were turned into a group chat. The planned outings became online meetings, and the excitement was re- placed by fear of the virus. Your vision of

For someone who did not just pass the Criminology Board Examination but aced the highest rank, what are the traits and characteristics an aspiring should obtain in preparation for the broad exam?

I think the best characteristics that an aspiring topnotcher should have are:

1. Have a clear goal. The common mindset of board exam takers is, that they just limit themselves in passing the board exam, and being at the top is just a bonus. Eventually, their efforts are only good for passing grades. Whereas, a taker whose goal is getting the highest spot, and he/she is committed, will exert unbelievable efforts to achieve it.

2. Dedication and belief in yourself. If you ask the students, ”who wants to become the next topnotcher?‘ without a second, the majority or all of them would raise their hands. Now if you ask them what efforts they have done already, eventually they will become silent. This is true, every student can say ‘I will top the board exam”, but only a few are dedicated to achieving it. Every one of us can top the exam. Being poor, not an academic achiever, working student, having kids, old and more are not excuses. It is just a matter of how you trust, believe, and dedicate yourself to achieving it.

3. Hardwork and Perseverance. It’s exhausting sitting and reading for plenty of hours each day. There are times you feel physically and mentally drained. Some hindrances and challenges make you doubt and question your capabilities. I experienced it, and to tell you, it’s normal especially when you are putting too much effort to achieve something. Just stay focused and do not break. As great Kobe Bryant said,” Great things come from hard work and perseverance”.

4. Discipline. In reviewing, you should accept that there are things that need to be sacrificed. I sacrificed my social life. I locked myself inside my room for 6 months and would go out only for my necessities and to attend review classes. I cut myself off my social media accounts and hobbies like watching movies. I sacrificed my sleep since I need to reach my required hours of reading per day. I am very strict with my schedule, if it’s time to study- then study. If it’s time to rest - then rest, no excuses. It’s hard, but I always tell myself. This is just temporary. 6 months of sacrifices in exchange for your lifetime pride.

5. Pray. Before and after my review, I prayed. Before and after my board exam, I prayed. Before and after

a fun journey was crumpled. But what matters the most is that you are slowly building the momentum and that you spend this last beginning with the people you treasure, trust, and love. In the end, leaving does not mean turning your back on them. Leaving means chasing your dreams. Use this last beginning to explore, enjoy, and learn together. So that in the end, you have nothing to regret.

Don’t be afraid to leave. Be more afraid of leaving without making memories. Now, dear, start this school year with good memories you will cherish forever. Embrace this beginning. Be brave at the end.

the results came out, I prayed. That’s how I value God in every action I make. I always seek guidance and blessings. It’s the most powerful thing that we should have. What key experience shaped you into the successful person you are today?

Being financially incapacitated.

Honestly, since then, I knew already that I was not born with a silver spoon and already anticipated financial hindrances in pursuit of my dream and success although I appreciate my family, especially my mother for giving their best support despite our status. This is always (has always) been my motivation to strive hard to succeed and give my best effort, not until I enter college. I thought before I was not going to enroll in college since we do not have enough money to support my finances. Fortunately, the University of Mindanao offers various scholarships for those who are in need. I applied as STA for 2 years and as Table Tennis Varsity for the last 2 years. I was aiming to get a Latin Honor back then so it was hard considering I needed to balance my scholarship and academics, but I learned so many skills and qualities which helped me to survive. Eventually, I graduated Cum Laude. Another challenge was, how I am going to enroll in a review center. Fortunately, one prestigious review center in the country offers full scholarships for those who will enter the top 1-10 in their diagnostic exam which I landed 6.

You see, all of us will face challenging experiences in our lives, but how we perceive and face them will tell if we stand or break. If we do not take on challenges in our life, we wouldn’t discover our full potential.

How are you able to overcome the stereotype about criminology students being only good at physical activities and not academically inclined? Did it ever cross and influence your mind when you aced the board exam?

Yes, we cannot deny that other people think that criminology programs are purely focused on physical activities. Worse, they thought that all criminology students and professionals are incompetent. And I received these kinds of questions. I just asked them ”Do you have any P.E. subjects?‘ and of course, they will say YES.

And I reply (to) them, that your PE subjects are equivalent to our Defense Tactics or DEFTAC subjects, the same number of units, the same number of hours. Other than that, we have academic subjects which have the same total number of academic units whatever Program you enrolled in. So if you will say) you say that (the) Criminology Program is focused only on physical activities and not inclined academically, as if you said that your program is focused on physical activities as well.

Moreover, I am a fan of joining non-athletic activities in the University of Mindanao. I joined not because I want to prove myself as a criminology student but only to enjoy and discover skills. I joined the LITMUS competition where I landed 2nd place in Essay Writing Filipino Category way back year 2019 and poster making contest during Library week where I landed 1st place in the same year, I remember, facilitators were asking if I am fine arts student since some of the participants were fine arts students, and I said NO, I’m criminology student and their reactions say it all.

In the bigger picture, a lot of criminologists nowadays are respected lawyers, educators, forensic technicians, high-ranking officials in the field of law enforcement, politicians, and more. They cannot achieve that if they only excel physically.

Lastly, to pass or top the board exam, doesn’t have any physical activity examinations. It’s purely knowledge-based, the application of what we learned in our ACADEMIC subjects throughout our college and review days. Only 12, 698 out of 41, 913 hurdled the said exam. The number speaks for itself. Surely we cannot pass this exam if we were not academically inclined. Perhaps, one of the reasons why I posted on my social media accounts a photo with my compiled books, reviewers and 4 sided wall notes is to let others know that, topping the CLE was not easy, you need to be intellectually, mentally, emotionally, and physically prepared just like other Board courses. Challenges and obstacles are just some of the hindrances that are encountered by board exam takers, what are your messages and tips for aspiring UMians topnotchers.

For aspiring UMians topnotchers, build your foundation. Treat your regular class as if your preparation for your upcoming board exams. Start reviewing your notes as early as possible. Compile updated and reliable review materials. Avoid cramming. Take your competency appraisal seriously, because personally, it helps. Do not be afraid to ask questions when in doubt. Maximize the benefit of the Internet. Always trust your capabilities. Keep motivated. In the board exam, the questionnaires don’t know if you are an academic achiever, a Latin honor or just a mediocre, it’s a matter of preparation and dedication. From now on, envisioned yourself already. Condition your mind that you will be the next topnotcher, and to tell you, if you are committed, your actions will follow. Goodluck Ga!

UM COLEOPTERA RESEARCHERS DISCOVER TWO NEW WEEVIL SPECIES

in honor of the family of Mr. Melbert Baul with their dedication to conservation and the type of locality which is the Mt. Malindang. This recent discovery raised the number of 27 taxa in the Philippines under subgenus Dolichocephalocyrtus, where 14 out of 27 were from Mindanao.

THE UNVEILING

University of Mindanao Coleoptera researchers have recently identified two new species of weevils in the forests of Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental provinces.

In reference to the scientific journal, Acta Biologica Universitatis Daugavpiliensis, Volume 22, No. 1, published last December 2022, the identified and classified species belong to the genus Metapocyrtus (Dol-

ichocephalocyrtus) malindangensis and Metapocyrtus (Dolichocephalocyrtus) baulorum, which are considered “species novum” or new species to science.

Moreover, the new species are named

The discovery of the species is credited to the collaboration of the Coleoptera Research Center, namely: Dr. Analyn Anzano Cabras, Dr. Milton Norman Medina, and Efrhain Loidge Pajota; together with Rodrin Rivera, a faculty member of the School of Teacher Education at the Northeastern Mindanao State College of Science and Technology in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental.

Mindanao has been the domain of the recently described and identified species of Metapocyrtus. Thus, according to the published scientific journal, the discovery of these new species in Mindanao is not a big shock or surprise anymore, knowing that it is home to the remaining frontiers of biodiversity in the Philippines.

Furthermore, on a Facebook post of Patoja about the publication of this discovery, he shared, “To have the chance to work on novel species of weevils during my practicum as a BS Biology student and have it published in an international journal is a privilege that will definitely help me as a neophyte in this field.”

HYAZINC: THE ENERGY STORAGE OF THE FUTURE

Among 82 applicants and 13 industry experts, the University of Mindanao grasped the title of Grand Champions and the “Most Impactful Enterprise award” in Ready, Spark, Charge: Hacking the Future of Energy on December 12, 2022, an annual clean energy hackathon organized by New Energy Nexus Philippines with the goal of accelerating energy ventures, ideas, and technologies that address the Philippines’ energy challenges. Two other UM teams have advanced to the championship rounds. The winning project’s title is Fabrication of Flexible and Self-Healable Hydrogel Hybrid Supercapacitor crosslinked by Eichhornia crassipes (Water Hyacinth) Cellulose

Nanocrystals, and the team’s start-up project is known as HyaZinc.

For energy storage, lithium-ion batteries were used in approximately 90% of batteries. Furthermore, the main components of batteries, lithium-ion, and cobalt, may not be able to meet future demand. As a result, there is a need to develop an alternative storage device that can reduce battery waste while also utilizing sustainable materials. Thus, the Hyazinc team devised a solution. UM JOINS HANDS WITH DOST, LAUNCHES MINDANAO’S FIRST NANOTECHNOLOGY FACILITY

There are not enough facilities in the Philippines’ urban regions for the collection and disposal of waste. Due to inconsistent efforts at collection, segregation, and processing of solid wastes, the spread of epidemic diseases and the clogging of storm drains caused by open dumps can happen so easily. With the growing problem of different waste kinds produced as a result of overproduction and consumerism, Mindanao keeps finding ways to combat these environmental problems all these years.

In line with

this, the University of Mindanao officially inaugurated the region’s first-ever nanotechnology center, The Center of Green Nanotechnology Innovations for Environmental Solutions (CGNIES). It was funded by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOSTPCIEERD) through the Infrastructure Development Program (IDP).

Since Mindanao is struggling with waste-related environmental problems, this project was im -

plemented to showcase environmentally friendly methods of creating nanomaterials from local resources and incorporating them into small- and largescale structures to create technical solutions to environmental issues.

According to Dr. Ruby Raterta, the chief of the DOST-Human PCIEERD’s Resources and Institution Development Division, who spoke on behalf of the Council’s executive director Enrico Paringit, the organization has allocated over Php 200 million to equip institutions like

The said concept was headed by Engr. Jay Carlo Aguilar, and derives from an ongoing

research-funded project: “Production of Bio-Briquettes from Nanosized Durio zibethinus (Durian) Peels and Seed Starch Adhesive.”, which was done by putting the durian peels utilized in producing nano-sized carbonized durian peeling through py -

objectives. He also added their anticipation of the university playing a vital role in fostering green technologies in Mindanao and aid people in taking care of the environment through technological advancements.

In the previous years, the University of Mindanao has participated in various movements in making the world a better place through environmental actions and studies.

Last year, Dr. Chosel Lawagon of the University of Mindanao received the renowned Green Talents Award from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of Germany for her work in using nanotechnology to upcycle garbage. With the help of the Institute of Biodiversity and Environment of the University of Mindanao’s Research and Publication Center, Tagum City achieved the distinction of recording the most number of indigenous plants and animals in the nation during the City Nature Challenge 2022. They were able to advance thanks to their performance in the CNC2022, which placed them 36th globally and third in Asia for nature observations.

With consistent efforts in any kind of waste management, it is not impossible to achieve a sustainable environment ideal for living.

Roumel Salvador Alvarez conceptualized a Taylor Swiftthemed opening spiel for the pitching activity.

Each one of us spends our summer differently. Some enroll in extracurricular activities, apply for a summer job, and stay in a beautiful beach house, just like the setting of the series. Jenny Han, one of this generation’s famous young adult writers and best known for her To All the Boys series, surprises her fans with another adaptation series of The Summer I Turned Pretty on Amazon Prime Video.

The first season of the series consists of seven episodes centered on the background of the characters and a glimpse of what the trilogy series would be about.

Belly, a 15-year-old Asian-American girl (portrayed by Lola Tung), is turning 16 and will be

Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas. Elsa considers her grandmother her only best friend. Unfortunately, grandmothers cannot live forever, and Elsa’s life turns upside down when her grandmother dies early in the book.

However, this story takes an exciting turn when Granny leaves Elsa with a bundle of envelopes addressed to the neighbors living in their apartment building. Now, Elsa’s task is to send them to their respective recipients. It seemed like an easy task, but as Elsa listened to their stories, she soon realized that she had a lot to learn about her Granny’s life.

This book is fun and entertaining to read. Although I said it is fun, it can still

can deal with any number presented to her.

Her accurate calculations on America’s space missions were a huge contribution to its success. Mary Jackson, portrayed by Janelle Monae, is an engineer at heart and is only being held back by society’s judgements. She would have already become one if people never measured capability based on skin color. Dorothy Vaugh, played by Octavia Spencer, is a natural-born leader who is also an expert when it comes to machines. She never gave up on proving her worth and has expertise that even men have failed to have.

The scene wherein Dorothy Vaughn declines a job promotion because the women in her department were not given the same opportunity as her, has made me believe that

straightforward for their dreams and values they believe in without any calculations. The second song in the mini album called “U” is an MZ style serenade for the fans, also known as TREASURE MAKERS. It is a song that confesses love in a pure and innocent way. The next song, Darari, which went insanely viral on the social media application TikTok is the melody you sing without knowing after falling so deeply in love.

TREASURE’s angelic voiced vocalist, Bang Yedam, took part in the composition and lyrics of the song. Another song from the album is a song that contains the message of hope to those who feel alone. “It’s Okay” is a ballad song that features the members’

most triple-A games made in the mid-2010s while having the graphics of a game made in the 80s.

Its whole selling point is that you can win almost all encounters without fighting. This is unusual at the time where video games are almost always centered on killing creatures to progress the story.

But the novelty does not end there.

As you play, the game also plays with you. It makes the player think about their perception of media, almost taking them in a meta-narrative reflection. Sometimes the characters inside the game do not speak to the main character but instead the player themselves.

Wazzup, mga Ga! It’s your cool boi Indzong. Finally, after more than two years, back to campus na tayo! Siyempre madaming changes ang naganap, so does the ferson na magbigay ng tips ngayon. Unfortunately, your iconique Indzai has already migrated to Japan for good. But I’ll assure you na I can deliver well in giving you tips on becoming a good student by practicing these basic etiquettes that every responsible UMyongs and MINyangs must remember.

As I had observed, majority ng mga students ngayon ay never pang nakapag-experience ng face-to-face setting ng university due to COVID-19. There’s a

lot of adjustments to do, especially na hindi pa natin alam masyado ang dos and don’ts ng ating unibersidad.

Forda tip number 1, you may read the student handbook which you can find by opening your UM Portal. Click “Academic Services” and you will be redirected to a new tab. Find the “Downloads” section and click the Student Handbook to download. Basahin ng mabuti and try to internalize all the contents in the handbook.

Mahirap na, baka bigla ka nalang ipapatawag sa OSA because you violated something na hindi mo alam that it is bawal. Remember, ignorance of the law excuses no one, so check your Student Handbook now bruh.

Sheeesh! Our university caters a lot of students to the point na ang pila to enter the university grounds will reach up until overpass! Crowded pa rin ang UM even if blended learning lang po tayo, opo. Forda tip number 2, be sensible with your belongings and your surroundings. We often take for granted when the manong guards say “walay mangunguot pag walay magpakuot” at the entrance gate, but it is actually true! Be vigilant and always stay alert kasi forda safety ng ferson din naman yarn.

I understand that naudyok yung friendship moments natin because of the online setting, and now we are ecstatic to meet them in the flesh.

But please, don’t flock the pathway and make a slow walk with more chika because may ibang students na nagmamadali then they are interrupted because nakaharang kayo sa daan. Forda tip number 3: Don’t make tapok and always keep right to give way sa mga nagmamadaling students. Forda kusion jud tamo sa inguinal canal if I caught you stampeding the way!

Lastly, I heard complaints from here and there na forda damak ang students this academic year because ang mga fersons ay ginaleft lang nila ang kanilang pinagkainan anywhere! It is very alarming and hindi yan pwede dito sa UM, mga fersons. Forda tip number 4: always practice CLAYGO. I under-

stand na gutom ang all after quizzes and exams but please ugaliin nating linisin ang ating pinagkainan wherever we go because cleanliness is next to godliness, and trash bins are installed everywhere on the campus for this particular reason. I think that’s all muna for today’s blog. I hope that with these tips, you can practice good manners and right conduct. College is a training ground for the real world, and it is our responsibility to become a person inculcated with values. As my professor in GE 8 said, “attitude places distance.” Do well in your acads and see you when I see you. Amping, mga Ga!

What are the challenges you have experienced so far having limited face-to-face classes?

“There are challenges that I have encountered during face-to-face classes such as fixing my body clock to match the fast-paced modality, the arduous task to be updated both online and offline setup, executing my organizational task as a student-leader, keeping up with academic demands, and managing my household

responsibilities. Although these challenges are all arduous, it is also fulfilling.”

What are the things you look forward to this Academic Year?

“In this academic year, I look forward to a life-changing academic experience. I am lookin forward to the road I have taken will lead me to become mature as a person and as a future educator by triumphing in my responsibilities as a student, a student-leader, a son, and a citizen. I hope that this academic year will become meaningful to me and all the students in their field.”

“In my part, I lived in our province, in Bansalan Davao del Sur. That is why I really need to go here every Monday to Wednesday morning to attend my classes. I actually travelled 2 to 3 hrs. The reason why I need to go home every day after class is that I am an online english teacher and I don’t have stable connection here. Tho it is incredibly challenging, But I won’t let this

stop me.”

What are the things you look forward to this Academic Year?

“I’m manifesting that this academic year will be full of happiness and fun. That we can enjoy each moment we have here and we can adopt the quality education of UM.”

What is more effective in learning, face-to-face or online set-up? Why?

“For me, it’s more effective when it’s residential or face-to-face. Because you get to see your students’ reactions, even just the subtle facial expressions, you would decipher whether they understood what you were saying or not. And when they show such ex- pressions then you would automatically, let’s say, repeat your discussion, or you would focus on which part of your lessons has to be reiterated or not any- more. And also, face-toface is more effective because we aim not only to enhance students’ mental or cognitive abilities and capacities but also their affective, motivational, and social factors as well. So, the latter was nonexistent or not present at all during the online setup or online modality of learn- ing. So, that’s the gist. In short, face-to-face is more effective, although both have their pros and cons, if you’re going to weigh things and deliberately think through them, face- to-face is more effective.”

What are the challenges you’ve experienced as faculty staff so far in hav- ing limited face-to-face classes?

“First challenge in teaching and learn- ing context alone is that we only get to meet the students thrice a week. Unlike the pre-pandemic setup where we get to meet our students Monday to Friday, that’s every day, which is five times a week. What comes with that challenge is that you must be quick with your discussion and in reality, not all students will get what you were saying

during the first discussion. You have to revisit certain topics, but because of the time constraint, it’s like you’ll just let the students read the instructional materials. Unlike the five days classes, we can review, but then again, there is a pro which is we can also focus on our asynchro- nous schedules with the online task that we should be given to the students. And also, I guess for the student’s part the asyn- chronous schedules serve as their rest days because they get to work on other tasks at their convenience.” What are the things you look forward to this academic year?

“The things that I look forward to honestly, it’s everyone’s concerns and problems being here on the campus even on weekends. It is insufficient and exhausting and it’s just too much for both teachers and students. We understand that we want to deliver quality educa- tion, or we have to deliver our tasks and work but then again, the effective- ness of the quality of our work is not actually synonymous with the number of hours that we have to render on campus. We always find ways to complete our tasks, jobs, and responsibilities as early as possible. Let’s say we have 10 tasks for this week, we actually finish that, let’s say until Friday because we want to rest on Saturdays and Sundays, and I guess that goes the same with the students. The new system will be more convenient for everyone, especially for the MSAT1 and MSAT2, so I’m looking forward to it. Because we need rest—both instructors and students—I hope

it should just be from Monday to Friday. Since it is difficult to get sick nowadays due to COVID, even machines cannot work or will be damaged if they are overused, how much more so for us humans where our health is only our in- vestment?”

“ In addition, in the entire process of teaching and learning, whoever makes the decisions somewhere in the higher-ups, I hope will consult the teachers where we are the ones who personally faced the students. They would consult the teachers first if it is okay if we’ll implement this kind of schedule or not. Is it okay to work even on Saturdays? And since they didn’t consult us the teachers, most of the faculties are also studying for master’s and doctorate degrees. What’s ridiculous is that when you try to lobby your concern and it’s valid? Like Ma’am, we can’t teach on Saturdays because we also have our classes for our master’s and doctorate degrees where we are the students considering that part of the policy of the university, we are man- dated and encouraged to proceed and pursue high- er studies as part of our faculty development. And now that we actually do it, how come they gave us this Monday to Saturday schedule and then told us to find ways in managing this kind of schedule? Of course, we can’t do that because we only have one body. To tell you honestly, we can really find ways if we want to, but it’s not really feasible. Thus, it’s not really a smart decision to include Saturday classes.”

pa siya noh kalit lang siya. I was shocked by the update at first. The first struggle I experienced is when traveling more than 1 hour from Mintal. Aside from this, the fare and other expenses. In terms of schedule, in addition, It is quite challenging since I have both MSAT1 and MSAT2 classes. Another thing is, sa quizzes and sa exams. Kay dati man gud if mag quiz merong oral muna first, ngayon kay deretso nag anon. Tapos nung exam pod, we have no idea kung ano ang mga nagla-

bas because wala kami nag quiz, deretso exam, so we don’t have any idea though merong syllabus pero marami masyado kaya so overwhelming siya.”

What are the things you look forward to this academic year?

“One of the things I look forward to is the Intramurals. Because I heard a lot of people before saying that intramurals have a lot of activities and booths, and it is our chance to meet new people from different programs.

One of the favorite sports UMians love to talk about is basketball. It has been a big part of the Filipino culture that we have basketball leagues within our barangays, villages, and even in our university. The good thing about basketball is that it is not only a men’s game. Women are also invested and engaging in the sport. In our intramurals, the College of Criminal Justice Education emerged as champions in both the men’s and women’s categories of the basketball tournament, with all colleges putting up impressive performances. As the school year progresses, the different colleges and departments are holding their own basketball tournaments, giving students the chance to show off their skills on the hardcourt.

One of the major influences Filipinos, especially UMians, is the National Basketball Association or the NBA. Players such as Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry are only some of the common household names in the league. Their fame can be seen beyond the court,

The College of Criminal Justice Education stood above the rest of the competition, garnering a total of 683 points, emerging as the champions in both categories of the Basketball, Track & Field, Tug-of-War, Sepaktakraw, and Football Men’s events.

The College of Engineering Education followed suit at second place, with 316 total points, toppling CCJE in the men’s and women’s categories in Table Tennis and champions of the Volleyball Women’s event. They were also the first runner-up in Volleyball, Basketball, Football, and Track & Field Men’s events. The College

in Mati City last October 29-30, 2022, wherein two teams with players from different colleges finished first and third runner-up in the tournament. The University of Mindanao Judo Club also dominated the Davao Sports Festival Judo Tournament 2022, held at Barangay Gym, Nova Tierra Village, Davao City, last November 8, wherein they dominated the Men’s and Women’s Open Weight Divisions, Nage-No-Kata, and had the Women’s Fastest Ippon by Yeltsien Solomon at 11 seconds.

He also thanked everyone who participated and made the 69th Intramural Sports Meet possible, from the athletes to the coaches and everyone involved in the events.

We are 20 games into the 2022-2023 NBA Regular Season, and who would have thought that teams like the Sacramento Kings would be sitting comfortably on top of the Western Conference, but the Los Angeles Lakers, with all the star power in the league, sinking to the bottom of the standings?

As of today, many of these stars are either retired, injured, or regressed. LeBron won a title in the 2020 season, but many considered it a proxy championship,

given the circumstances of their run. Kevin Durant suffered a series of injuries since the 2019 NBA Finals and upon his return, he was confronted with many issues among his Brooklyn Nets teammates and coaching staff. Now that Kyrie Irving and Durant left the Nets for different teams. It is yet to be seen whether their addition to their new teams contributes to the team’s improvement as Durant continues to be sidelined with injuries while Irving still has not made a significant impact on the Dallas Mavericks.

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were both sidelined due to multiple injuries but managed to win the championship last season. All these affected not only their performances but also their teams’.

As the old stars regressed, new stars began to emerge. Giannis Antetokounmpo has been phenomenal, already a two-time league MVP at 27. Luka Dončić is also producing efficient triple-doubles on a gameto-game basis. Ja Morant and Trae Young have also stood out, producing

quality performances for their respective teams. However, the most significant change in the new NBA is highlighting the importance of team basketball. Gone are the days when only one player would fill the stat sheet and stand out during a game. Today, it is all about getting everyone involved in the offense. A prime example of this is the Sacramento Kings. Nobody thought the Kings would ever return to their glory days, but this season proved otherwise. Mike Brown has done an outstanding job in utilizing the potential of his players like DeAaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes, Keegan Murray, and Davion Mitchell, that when maximized, produces good results, which can be seen by their current place in the standings. We are in the new era of the NBA. Yes, stars like LeBron, Durant, and Curry are still around, but the league now belongs to the young guys and is in good hands, and we, as fans, get to see this new era unfold before our very eyes.
