the diverse population of the UAE is also increasing the demand for international courses, which is in turn attracting more international schools and colleges to the region. A high personal income level alongside a tax-free environment has resulted in the deployment of funds towards sustained investment in education. Within the GCC region, the number of students in the UAE and Oman are expected to grow at a faster pace compared to other member nations. With a broadening outlook on gaining international exposure to the prevalent global business environment, Executive MBAs are a contemporary programme developed to provide students a competitive edge when it comes to acquiring knowledge and skills related to the social, economic and environmental aspects of international business. They are designed to meet the needs of emerging professionals and strategise on developing effective and tech-savvy managers for today’s dynamic global organisation. The executive education programmes encompass the different responses that are employed to address the challenges posed by traditional management education, by way of new business models, digital learning and corporate partnerships. Employers are increasingly seeking candidates with a distinctly global outlook about the way the world does business, as well as a profound understanding of the local business environment. UAE Education with an international affiliation in the United Arab Emirates is wooing students like never before with its twin advantages of tax-free earnings after graduation and some of the best universities in the Gulf region. In addition, a number of highly ranked universities based in other countries have branch campuses in the UAE. The education market in Dubai is the most sophisticated and competitive within the GCC. The demand for executive

The UAE government has been taking significant strides to fulfil its vision to build a first-rate education system. In the 20172018 Global Competitiveness Report by the World Economic Forum, the UAE was ranked 12th based on the quality of its education system. It was ranked 13th for the quality of science education and 15th for the quality of its business schools. The quality of education is indicative of

Dubai’s state of the art infrastructure, easy visa policies, favourable investment climate and strategic location have drawn reputed foreign educational providers. The presence of over 200 nationalities in Dubai makes it a melting pot of cultures from all around the world. One of the most recent entrants into Dubai’s university space was The University of Birmingham, a British “top 100” university, which was officially inaugurated in February as the University of Birmingham Dubai (UBD). The university, which is based in Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) will have the same degrees and quality as the University of Birmingham in the UK. Courses at UBD will begin in September with the initial offering including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in business management, computer science, economics and mechanical engineering. UBD is in good company, joining numerous other universities from the UK, including The University of Manchester. Interestingly, the latter institution, which is a DIAC Academic Partner, announced in January

The university said that all of its new part-time MBA students are experienced working executives and 15% of the new cohort comprises highly qualified business women and professionals. The students began their MBA journey recently with an induction session at the Middle East Centre in Dubai Knowledge Park. The university offers two student intakes per year for the Global Part-time MBA, in January and July. are some major international business school players who offer EMBAs, general MBAs and specialist courses in the region. The GCC education sector is witnessing a robust growth in student enrolments coupled with a steady expansion in related infrastructure. Government reforms and spending have played a key role in strengthening the sector. Measures to encourage private sector investments alongside an increasing preference for international curricula amongst residents are attracting renowned foreign education institutes to the region. New players are venturing into this oasis of premier education; Curtin University, an Australian University, also opened its doors to students at The Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) in September 2017 September. While the GCC’s economies have no doubt suffered since the oil price crash of 2014, which has impacted many other areas of business, it is evident that executives and graduates in the GCC view business education as an important means of boosting their career opportunities and employability, and this appears to be reflected in the continued growth of the higher education – and particularly business courses – in the region.

Drake University Leadership development is essential for expanding regional talent

● By Marty Martin, President, Drake University

Today’s business climate is defined by rapid technological change, global competition, and economic uncertainty. In order to succeed in this environment, it is essential for corporations to continually invest in human capital development, including the development of executive leadership. As organisations take steps to ensure their workforce has the skills required for success, it is important for managers and executives to grow and develop in parallel to their team. World-class companies are distinguished by visionary leaders who provide immediate, visible outcomes goals while identifying and implementing new strategies for success. Leadership development and succession planning is important for every organisation, but business leaders in the United Arab Emirates and broader Gulf Cooperation Council region face a distinct set of challenges in this area. The first of these is overcoming a regional skills gap. Forty percent of Emirati students are graduating with “skills which aren’t needed in the market,” according to a report last year by the UAE Minister of Higher Education. The second challenge arises from the rapid pace of technological innovation— after all, this is a region that has its eyes toward Mars and sees a future populated by hovercraft and self-guided cars. Organisational leaders find themselves balancing aging legacy systems against innovations such as robotics, virtual reality, and blockchain. There is no easy, universal answer to addressing these challenges: The solution must, in every case, be as unique as the organisation.

In response, leaders are seeking new and enhanced options for executive leadership development. Drake University’s Leading Others programme leverages a transformative, empirical, readied, and international learning experience to build executive skills among employees in mid-tosenior level leadership roles. Through the help of executive coaching and the proprietary Drake Leadership Success Profile (360), the programme helps participants develop a well-defined and actionable leadership development plan and comprehensive three year business plan, while capitalising on unique personal strengths. With nearly 100 hours of orchestrated learning, Drake University’s combined Dubai and London programme focuses on four components—Leader Readiness, Leader Development, Organisation Performance, and Leadership Sustainability. The programme is designed to meet the time constraints of midto senior-level managers: activities are spread over a nine-month time period. The most beneficial form of executive education will empower leaders with a structured approach to understanding and improving their own leadership style. The strongest programmes will facilitate the kinds of professional connections that generate durable networks for the exchange of knowledge and experience. They will accomplish this while minimising executives’ time away from the office—and maximising the extent to which programme content can be directly implemented to strengthen an organisation, providing measurable value.

Strathclyde Business School Executive MBA is offered at eight global centres including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Oman and Bahrain One of the oldest, largest and most respected business schools in the UK, Strathclyde Business School has consistently been ranked in the top 10 B-schools in the UK in terms of both research and teaching quality. Over the course of its history, Strathclyde Business School’s innovative outlook has led to a number of firsts including being the first UK B-school to offer a one year full-time MBA programme, and the first to offer a part-time MBA programme at its international centres. In 2016, the school was named ‘UK Business School of the Year’ at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards in London in recognition of its outstanding overall performance and innovative and entrepreneurial outlook. Awarded to the business school which demonstrated the most outstanding overall performance, the prestigious award measures business schools against indicators including innovation, teaching, research, student experience, alumni relations and development. Judges looked at how each business school had built partnerships with the business community and the benefits this had brought to both sides. The Strathclyde Executive MBA is offered at eight international centres; Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Oman, Bahrain, Singapore, Malaysia, Greece and Switzerland. The programme is taught part time over two years and, with the exception of the mode of study, is identical to the full-time MBA in the UK – the same entry criteria, programme content, assessment and core learning materials, and it is taught by the same Strathclyde academics who teach in

Glasgow. The Strathclyde MBA is a generalist MBA and students can expect to graduate with a broad understanding of the fundamentals of business and management issues, advanced management skills and techniques, selfawareness as a manager and leader and with increased confidence in all areas of business, says programme director Dr Ron Bradfield. A particular strength of the programme is strategic management with three interrelated courses that culminate in a three-day Strategic Consulting in Practice workshop, where students undertake a real-life strategy assignment for a client. Entrepreneurship is also in focus, with a core course on Entrepreneurial Management and Leadership and elective options, such as New Venture Creation, providing the essential skills to enhance the abilities of people working for themselves or about to set up in business. This year the programme has been augmented by the addition of a course on managing technology and innovation. There are options for international study too. With a wide range of specialist departments in the business school, Strathclyde offers over 20 different electives, and students can opt to take elective subjects at the Summer School in Glasgow or at any of the school’s international centres. Strathclyde is the only triple accredited business school in the UAE with centres in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which offers students the flexibility to attend classes in the other centre when their personal schedule prevents them from attending a class at their own.

The University of Manchester Middle East Centre Middle East Centre opened in 2006 and has supported more than 2,200 part-time MBA students

The Middle East Centre opened in Dubai Knowledge Park in 2006 and has supported more than 2,200 part-time MBA students; the university has introduced new industryled Master’s degrees and executive education programmes to meet regional needs. The University of Manchester’s Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) is consistently ranked among the Financial Times’ top international schools; The 2018 Financial Times survey ranks the university’s MBA 10th in Europe, 36th in the world and 4th in the UK, positioning AMBS as the UK’s leading business school outside of the London, Oxbridge triangle. Bloomberg Business Week ranks Alliance MBS at 19th in the world and 9th in the alumni survey. The university is part of a small and select group of institutions worldwide that is accredited by all three major MBA bodies – AACSB International, AMBA and EQUIS; all MBA degrees are awarded by The University of Manchester. One of the six international executive centres worldwide, the Middle East Centre at Dubai Knowledge Park, UAE, opened in 2006 and has supported more than 2,200 part-time MBA students in the region. It is the largest and fastest growing centre in the school’s international network. The 24-month, Global Part-time MBA offers students as much face-to-face time as most full-time MBAs. Qualified working professionals have the option to accelerate their programme even further with an 18-month Global MBA Finance Accelerated option; or the Global MBA Accelerated

programme, which is a closed cohort. Face to face contact with faculty is a major component of the Manchester Global MBA and the regular student workshops bring together many of the MBA students not only from the region but also those international students who elect to come to the Dubai centre for their workshops, enabling them to build on their global network. Leading faculty from the Manchester campus deliver MBA programme modules. Global Part-time MBA students are all experienced working professionals and many are employed in senior positions by some of the world’s leading multinational companies, as well as local and regional companies. Around 30% of students are already in c-level roles and 10% of students already hold a Master’s degree. The students are selected based on the same entry criteria applied globally by The University of Manchester. Students graduating through the Global Part-time MBA programme are awarded the same Manchester MBA as students on the full time, campus-based programme, and receive the same degree from The University of Manchester. The University of Manchester holds an MBA graduation ceremony in the Middle East – the only one hosted outside the UK; graduation is just the beginning of a lifelong relationship with the university with a very active international alumni network and Middle East Alumni Association, and a Global Careers Service providing access to tools and opportunities for a successful senior level career.

◼ NEWS

University of Birmingham opens Dubai campus

The University of Birmingham Dubai (UBD) officially inaugurated its Dubai campus in March. The university will have the same degrees and quality as the University of Birmingham in the UK, which is recognised as one of the top 100 universities in the world. The Dubai campus is located in Dubai International Academic City (DIAC) and will offer courses identical to those in the UK. Courses at the Dubai campus will begin in September, and the initial offering includes undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in business management, computer science, economics and mechanical engineering. There will also be teacher-training degrees, with further programmes to be offered later. Fees at the Dubai campus will be roughly the same as the UK campus. At the Birmingham campus, the full-time standard international student fees for 2018-2019 are listed as between £17,520 for undergraduates. The Dubai campus represents the first phase of the campus, which will move a new, larger bespoke campus in 2020 or 2021. This new campus will have a capacity of around 4,500 students. Dr Abdullah Al Karam, director-general of KHDA, said: “The opening of University of Birmingham is an important milestone in our goal to build a worldclass education hub in Dubai. It represents new opportunities for students.”

CEN faculty member receives technical award by ASCE A faculty member from the College of Engineering (CEN) at American University of Sharjah (AUS) was recently awarded the “Best Technical Note of 2018” by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Written by Dr. Serter Atabay, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, in collaboration with a former Head of the AUS Department of Civil Engineering, Dr. Ali Osman Akan, the paper was entitled “Suspended Sediment Trap Efficiency of Vegetative Filter Strips” and published in the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering. The paper, which is an extension of a previously reported hydrologic study of vegetative filter strips to calculate sediment trap efficiencies, presents a set of charts developed using predetermined numerical solutions to the governing equations for overland flow, infiltration, and mass balance of suspended sediments in overland flow. The paper aims to serve those in the field of research including practical engineers, local authorities, transportation departments, and urban planners. Speaking about his success, Dr. Atabay said: “The Journal of Hydrologic Engineering by ASCE is one of the most prestigious publications in civil engineering. I believe this is a tremendous achievement in my career since ASCE sets the highest standards and I am extremely happy that our hard work finally paid off.”

Middle East Centre B Inducts Part Time MBA Students

The University of Manchester Middle East Centre has inducted its January 2018 cohort of 81 part-time MBA students from across the region. All the new students are experienced working executives – 15% of the new cohort comprises highly qualified business women and professionals. The students began their MBA journey recently with an induction session at the Middle East Centre in Dubai Knowledge Park. The university offers two student intakes per year for the Global Part-time MBA, in January 21 and July The January cohort includes students representing nearly 30 nationalities, with around twothirds of the new students residing in the UAE, and the balance from the wider GCC region, notably Saudi Arabia. The majority of the new students are self-funded and are already in management and leadership roles working in a range of core industries for the regional economies – oil and gas, engineering/services, manufacturing, construction and real estate. The University of Manchester’s Global Part-time MBA is a two-year programme with options to accelerate study further, with as much face-to-face time with faculty as most full-time programmes. The programme is structured around four practical themes – Management in Practice; Value Creation in Business; Tailoring Your Journey; Professional Skills for Business.

Finding the right university need not be like picking a needle out of a haystack

● By Lauren Jackson, Founder and Principal Consultant, ProEd

Congratulations - you’ve reached the stage of applying to university! Whether you are just finishing secondary school or have arrived to this life-changing decision, it is indeed a momentous occasion. Now what? Attending the university, of course. But which one? The world is opening up around us at a rapid pace, which means that our base of knowledge about things like universities is expanding as well. No longer are there only higher education options within our town, city, or country, but also around the world. The scope of choice is now endless, so how does someone choose amongst such a plethora of opportunities? It is important to keep a few things in mind when choosing the right university to do, and what not to do. Do: know if you’re sure about the subject While attending university may seem like it’s all about the fun (to some) - its main purpose is to impart knowledge and educate you to be a successful adult once you graduate. Understanding the field of academia you wish to study is the first, and most important thing you should investigate. Have you always wanted to study this subject? Have you always wanted to pursue a career related to this subject? Do some research on what topics the degree covers. Some universities care that you know about your subject of interest in-depth Don’t: force yourself to study something because you are not sure. If you aren’t sure of what you want to study, or are stuck between one, two, or even three subjects- that’s okay! It doesn’t mean you can’t go to university. It just means you need to go somewhere that will allow you to pursue multiple subjects

22_FEATURE 2.indd 23

“Different personalities thrive in different academic environments, and while that’s hard to see in high school, it will become more obvious in college and could put a strain on your friendship.” or explore your interests. Example - I studied in the US, and started out as a CS major and ended up pursuing a degree in Philosophy and Spanish. My advisors guided me throughout the time so I could understand my strengths and what I was truly passionate about. Do: think about who/what you’d like to be surrounded by Need sunlight? Can’t stand the heat? Don’t like to be around a lot of people? Love sports? Want to be close to home? All of these things are important to consider. Many universities have their own personalities, just like people, and want to take those who match their values and goals. You will be spending the next 3-6 years there, so you have to be happy with

where you study. It is important to consider if you want a university that is in a specific geographic location or climate, if you want a lot of friends with diverse interests, if you want small classroom sizes, lots of extracurriculars, and beyond. List out your priorities, and look for a university that matches them. Don’t: make decisions based on other friends’ choices This is one of the biggest mistakes a student can make. While it seems like it would be nice to have a support system/ source of comfort through familiarity while going to university, the odds are that you and your friends will not be happy at the same schools. Different personalities thrive in different academic environments, and while that’s hard to see in high school, it will become more obvious in college and could put a strain on your friendship. What’s

worse, you might be unhappy. As per the previous step, look at what interests YOU have and qualities you want in a university. If you and your friends end up being accepted by the same universities after you’ve picked them, then get excited about having a friend. Do: talk to your parents and friends This might seem a little contradictory, right? I just told you to not follow what your friends are doing and set your own path. It is important to listen to those around you, as they may offer new perspectives on things you might not have thought about, but do not blindly follow their advice/ actions. Don’t rely only on the experience of others. You as a person and personality may prefer something that one of those people might not stand. Take each point of advice that others give you, consider if it sounds interesting or good/bad, and then

make a call based on YOU and your gut feeling. Do: look at what’s beyond the classroom There are so many things to consider outside of those hours taking notesextracurricular activities, student support services, housing facilities, are just a few of them. In most universities, you will not be spending 100% of your time in the classroom or studying, so it is important to know where you will be during that time. If you are a person who will not thrive/study well in a shared living facility, or if you need to live with family, find a school that is okay with that. If you have a learning disability or just want to make sure you have support if you find yourself in a difficult situation, that’s ok. You just have to check if schools offer that. Even more important, look at how the school supports you in your endeavors after you complete your degree. Over the last ten years, the state of employment post-graduation has changed vastly. While academics are always important, employers are now looking at experience, soft skills, and (most importantly) your network when hiring recent graduates. And universities are recognising it. They’re now working to build vast career support departments and relationships with their alumni’s employers to help students make a smooth transition into the world. For many of these universities, this network extends beyond even graduation and supports their graduates for the rest of their lives. Do: get excited! This is a memorable time of your life! While it may seem daunting to make such a big decision, it’s the first step into something great. University is a period where you grow both academically and personally, and finding the right place which will support you, your personality and your aptitudes can seem a bit like matchmaking. However, if you find the right school for you - our perfect match which can enhance you and your future, you are set for life.

Promoting Student Wellbeing Mental health is a growing issue and there is plenty that universities and students can do to help Almost five times as many students as 10 years ago have told their universities about a mental health condition, according to the Institute of Public Policy Research analysis published earlier this year. As such, 94% of UK higher education providers surveyed by IPPR said they had experienced a rise in demand for counselling services in the past five years. More worryingly, the number of students who have dropped out of university with mental health issues has more than trebled in recent years, according to data from the Higher

In a bid to better understand this complex topic and see how different universities are approaching student wellbeing, we spoke with John Hilsdon the Head of Learning Support and Wellbeing at the University of Plymouth, Julie Spencer the Head of Student Wellbeing at the University of Lincoln and Wayne Campbell the Director

of Student Services at the University of Kent. “Studying at University brings a wealth of opportunities but also challenges to young people. Alongside academic studies, students need to learn to manage day to day life including settling in to a new city or country, building new relationships and friendships and managing new responsibilities such as finances and budgets,” says Wayne Campbell, the Director of Student Services at the University of Kent. “For many students this is a transition which is manageable with the advice and support of family and friends. Some students, however, may not have a solid network of support to draw upon and these young people often benefit from support at University to build their confidence, resilience and coping skills.” Of course it’s natural for such a pivotal and transformative period of life to result in stress and anxiety, however these challenges have always existed. After speaking with all three wellbeing professionals three new areas of concern arose: “Worries about finding employment after graduation, the accumulation of debt caused by the removal of grants, and the rise of social media have all brought new challenges,” says John Hilsdon, the Head of Learning Support and Wellbeing at the University of Plymouth. UK university tuition, once free, is now one of the most expensive in the world according to a new analysis. According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies students in England are going to graduate with average debts of £50,800. “Additional challenges for students today include the rising cost of studying at University and anxiety about student debt. Students often describe a fear of failure linked to pressure to live up to high expectations due to these financial commitments,” says Wayne. Despite the high costs, more young people than ever before are attending university (though there is some evidence to suggest this is changing) which is fuelling a sense of competitiveness. “There is a lot more pressure on students

28_FEATURE 3new.indd 29

“Social media has also been identified as a potential source of stress and anxiety.” to be successful and a more competitive environment for them to deal with in terms of employability,” says Julie Spencer, the Head of Student Wellbeing at the University of Lincoln. Research has found that popular social media such as Instagram and Facebook can increase feelings of inadequacy in 14 – 24-year-olds and it’s been highlighted as an area of concern within higher education institutes too. “Social media has also been identified as a potential source of stress and anxiety due to the emphasis on social success and competence in addition to academic success,” says Wayne. If left unchecked, such peer pressure can have devastating consequences. “Many students report feeling under pressure to be seen as popular and socially successful. Peer pressure can sometimes lead to dangerous behaviours associated with illegal drugs and there are growing numbers of students who seek help for suicidal thoughts or who self-harm,” says John. Fortunately, as well as the issues facing today’s students, the way mental health is viewed and approached is changing too. “Wellbeing and mental health are seen more as issues which affect us all and exist on a scale of severity and complexity rather than being seen as problems that may affect a small group of people. The willingness of high profile celebrities to

talk about their wellbeing and mental health problems publicly has helped to destigmatise matters and bring it more into the open,” says Wayne. Promoting wellbeing helps create a better overall experience for students, which ultimately benefits everyone. “If students are able to find support, advice and information and to develop coping skills for life, they are more likely to continue with and be successful in their academic studies, enjoy their student experience and contribute more positively to student life,” says Wayne. As highlighted in the introduction, struggling with mental health and dropping out of university are closely connected. “Research from the US (especially a study conducted over several years by the University of Michigan) shows students reporting high levels of depression and anxiety are twice as likely to leave university without graduating than their counterparts. This translates into a very strong economic case for wellbeing support in addition to the social and human benefits,” says John. But as well as keeping students happier and in university, promoting wellbeing can also help students to develop and improve concentration, motivation and energy levels, “all of which can be beneficial not only for personal wellbeing but also to studies. These strategies can be built on and used

“Universities are responding to the evolving needs of students in many ways.”

throughout life,” says Julie. Universities are responding to the evolving needs of students in many ways. One of the big changes is the integration of wellbeing into other university and partner services. “Universities are moving towards offering more integrated wellbeing and mental health services which reflect this model, including wellbeing promotional events, self-help and psycho-educational resources, counselling and specialist advice and mentoring (one to one or group work) and liaison with external specialist mental health services,” says Wayne. John agreed that at the University of Plymouth they have adopted a ‘more joined up approach’ whereby academic staff, counsellors, disability advisers and others work together closely when students report problems. Julie agrees and said the emphasis at the University of Lincoln is on being proactive, rather than reactive. As such, they have invested in expanding their mental health provision through developing their wellbeing teams and increasing the number of mental health advisors and wellbeing advisors available to support students. Here are some of the specific actions the universities we spoke to are taking to promote mental wellbeing: Hire enough staff: “The University of Plymouth has taken a proactive approach in appointing new wellbeing and mental health staff to work alongside counsellors over the last two years,” says John Run workshops: “We now run a series of short workshops which all students can benefit from, examples of these are on exam stress, feeling homesick and dealing with challenging emotions,” says Julie. Offer staff training: “We offer mental health first aid training to our staff – especially those acting as personal tutors, and there has been a good take up of this,” says John. Be prepared: The University of Lincoln hosts a Wellbeing Orientation Welcome each summer which “aims to provide prospective students who have applied to come to the University with the opportunity to learn more about the University, what to

expect and what is expected of them whilst studying at Higher Education level. WOW’s aim is to ease any anxieties students may have about the transition into University life,” says Julie. Foster partnerships: “We also work with staff and agencies in the city such as Mind to help coordinate efforts and improve wellbeing services. We work with the police and have an on campus confidential sexual offences drop-in. We are negotiating with another agency to host an on campus drop-in facility for those experiencing domestic abuse,” says John. Constant reminders: “The Student Wellbeing Centre will be running a new initiative throughout the academic year called Wellbeing Wednesdays. Representatives from the Wellbeing Centre will be out and about in different locations around campus, promoting and advising students on how to look after themselves. Each month will focus on a different aspect of wellbeing,” says Julie. Ensure services are accessible: “We have also developed new policies on wellbeing to review the progress of students and to help them access support in a timely fashion. We now offer a 24 hour mental health advice line and new drop-in facilities as well as traditional booked appointments,” says John. Make wellbeing integral: “The Wellbeing Team is an integral part of the Student Support and Wellbeing division within Student Services and offers support on campus to University of Kent staff and students, including counselling, consultation and liaison with academic schools, wellbeing advice and a mental

28_FEATURE 3new.indd 31

health crisis drop-in service every afternoon on week days during term time,” says Wayne. It is fantastic news that students are better able to get to grips with and speak about their mental health and universities are doing a fantastic job responding to their evolving needs. But we can’t rest on our laurels. “There is still a long way to go in breaking down negative stereotypes of mental health problems in society and tackling the fear of some students that identifying and seeking help for mental health problems will lead to discrimination, which will adversely affect the way they are perceived when seeking employment post University,” says Wayne. “The focus on destigmatising mental health and increasing widening participation seems to have led to an increase in students presenting with more long standing and complex mental health difficulties and this combined with pressures on NHS services in both Primary and Secondary care are causes for concern for all higher education institutions in the UK.” Universities, partner services and students need to work together to devise a wellbeing strategy that truly works. By creating an effective and proactive wellbeing strategy, universities can help improve the student experience and life on campus, academic results and dropout rates. What Lies Ahead?

34

v s o th h w T p to

The importance of developing your personal skills and seeking the advice of others What lies ahead of me? This is the million dollar question for a majority of students finishing high school. In a world that offers so many options to take mixed with some reluctance, uncertainty, and a dose of immaturity, the question usually brings enormous pressure. Often, the student could end up opting for a “trial and error” decision – to the detriment of his/her future. During my high school years, I was already very much conscious of my weakness in mathematics and sciences. I saw myself performing well in visual arts

and performing arts. In these areas of my student life I saw myself excelling even to the point of outshining my classmates who excelled in mathematics and sciences. The latter did not do a lot in terms of pacifying my anxiety over my future. This was mainly due to the stigma present in the educational system during my high school years that students excelling in

mathematics and sciences were more likely to end up with big-time jobs and big paychecks. Thereby the anxiety in me continued as I built my future. Armed with hope and conviction, I never gave in to the anxieties in my dayto-day life. I continued with my passion and eventually achieved a good grasp of myself and gained enough confidence. My passion for arts slowly built my character so that now, when I am at the stage of applying for a job, I often see myself as able to capitalise on the strength of my person. This disposition strengthened the foundations of the ambitions I started to build during my high school years. But why is my high school experience so relevant to higher education? Well, indications are that only 5% - 7% of successful Grade 12 graduates in the country are able to find a placement. This has been a challenge: How do we improve the employability of students and improve ourselves to meet the required standard if the schools lack the courses that boost the students’ chances of employment and only focus on theory. The world needs a workforce that is versatile, holistically developed, and socially skilled. So, all of you finishing high school or still in your high school years must take the challenge of building your person holistically. Always engage in activities that will strengthen your character as a person. This will complement your academic preparations for the kind of career you wish to land in the future. Looking at the present trend of educational systems, we often find a more flexible set-up that caters and understands the needs of a particular student based on their strengths and weaknesses, as well as personality. This is coupled with improved techniques of instruction from theoretical to a more applied instructional approach. This will benefit the students as they learn by doing and ensure that they also attain more independence and more avenues given to exercise decision making. A dynamic education system will make students mature, skilled, efficient and

34_FEATURE 4.indd 35

“A dynamic education system will make students mature, skilled, efficient and erudite.” erudite. It will prepare them to be globally competitive to face the rapidly, demanding and evolving global economy. I will now offer some tips on how to develop yourself, find the right course and university, and hopefully find the career of your dreams. 1. Know your craft and know yourself “What field of studies are you going to take in the University?” This is the most challenging question that most high school graduate students face. If you love what you are doing, success will be easy to achieve. As Oprah Winfrey said “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you”. Somehow your abilities and hobbies will help you to determine your passion. When you are passionate about something, you can’t stop talking about it, or trying to learn more about it. 2. Build up your profile Being a successful student is not only about studying hard but also knowing how to play hard. Most administrators today are looking for someone who is versatile, has developed social skills and is able to adapt to the university environment. This can be achieved through joining extracurricular activities, internship programmes, competitions, training schemes and seminars. Always open yourself to new

experiences and maintain an attitude of being hungry to learn because engaging in these various activities can make it easier to adjust to college life.

36

3. The school and university that will boost your chosen path Some students will select the top university in that particular country because it is the best. But, let’s be practical: there are lots of things to consider in choosing a university that will help us mould our future. First, we must know our status both academically and socially and whether it fits with what the university can offer. Second, consider the performance of the university particularly in terms of the programmes or courses they are offering. Here, university ranking need to be considered. Third, the class size, are you a type of student that can work in an interactive atmosphere or you can work more on a small size class. Fourth, the environment outside the class, does this university offers extra-curricular activities, seminars, trainings, internship programmes and more that will help you to be well develop both personal and professional. 4. Be ready at all times Most universities abroad are not only looking for a student who has a stellar academic background but also for a student who can balance their social and academic life and has a strong personality to enable

34_FEATURE 4.indd 36

them to thrive at university. The usual entry requirements for university are the high school certificates, test scores and financial documents. Some schools also require interviews. This area will be easier if you are confident. Your extracurricular activities count too because they will help show how versatile you are. 5. It’s okay to ask a consultancy As young as you are now, your knowledge might not be wide enough to understand everything, and that’s okay. It’s okay to ask for help if you are having a hard time, ask questions if you don’t understand and consult an expert or elder if you are lost because it’s better to be sure about what you are doing. You could consult your family, friends, teachers or counsellors that are passionate, experienced and knowledgeable and understand the situation you are into. This is especially important when choosing a university and career. Talk to someone who understands your strengths and weaknesses, who will give you advice and coach you to achieve the best possible results. It also helps if they have some in-depth knowledge of the complicated world of college admissions. Here in ProEd world, we provide support, guide and train students, assisting them to bridge the gap between their dreams and goals.
