2018 GOLDEN TRIGGR FOR INNOVATION IN ACCESSORIES

WINNER: TENICOR VELO AIWB HOLSTER Put away that bulky jacket. Tenicor’s innovative Velo holster is designed to make effective everyday concealment easy, even when wearing tailored or athletic fit clothing. The Velo is an “appendix carry” holster that is intended to be worn in front of the hip around one o’clock for right-handed shooters. This smart design is able to reduce the gun’s profile when being worn. By wearing the gun in front of the hip, you eliminate side bulges that even the best inside-thewaistband holster can’t hide. The belt runs across the raised trigger bar, creating a camming action that rotates the grip of the gun into the body. Velo also addresses one of the biggest challenges to carrying a holster daily, which is ride height. Tenicor carefully designed subtle and robust ride height adjustments into the Velo that allow the user to tailor the holster’s fit. For more information on Tenicor Velo, visit tenicor.com.

One of the things we love seeing in the firearms space is innovation. Being able to take something and improve upon it by being creative and smart is something we believe every large company or garage inventor should strive to do. M-LOK may be groundbreaking, but its installation method can use some help. Bobro Engineering has been pushing the limits of what’s possible since its founding. The firearms accessories company is probably known best for their rock-solid optic mounts. They are consistently pushing past what’s been done before to create new and effective ways to solve a multitude of problems that

Some AR-15 parts he installed on the rifle include a Strike Insustries AR Enhanced grip and an LWRCI ambi-safety selector. An RPR-specific CTK Precision extended mag release was installed to allow Bill easier magazine changes without having to break his grip. For as much as its looks as well as functionality, Bill changed out the smaller standard bolt knob for an R+D Precision Large bolt knob. The larger knob feels good in the hand and makes manipulating the bolt effortless. Installed at the rear of the bolt is a Delta Team Tactical aluminum bolt shroud extension. The

extension features a compartment that holds tools in case you need to make adjustments in the field. To stabilize the rear of the rifle, Bill installed an XLR Industries Tactical buttstock. The lightweight buttstock features QD flush cups on both the left and right sides, an ambidextrous cheek rest and a mount point for a monopod. The stock can be adjusted for length of pull, cheek rest height, recoil pad height, and even up to 10 degrees of cant. We asked Bill about what glass he chose for his RPR. “I figure that especially when shooting at distances of 1,000 yards and beyond, the glass you use is probably equally as important as your ammo and barrel,” he says. “I’ve had the pleasure of trying out a few high-end scopes in my time and found out quickly, yes, you do get what you pay for. But also, at the upper echelons, the law of diminishing returns runs strong. I wasn’t looking to break the bank with my build… I already went far past my budget by acquiring the Proof barrel. I decided to go with the SIG Sauer Tango6 5-30x56 scope because it combines the performance I was looking for with the limits of my budget.” The scope sits in a Midwest Industries 34mm Heavy Duty zero-offset scope mount. Bill invited us to head to the range to shoot 100-yard groups. We immediately noticed that the Proof Research carbon fiber barrel made us look like better shooters than we usually are by good by giving us consistent, hole-on-hole groups. Our best group was 0.147-inches with Nosler Match Grade 140-grain Custom Competition. We also noticed that the carbon fiber barrel cools down a lot faster than the factory steel barrel. In fact, the barrel could be touched after a few minutes after shooting. A coolershooting barrel equates to better accuracy and a longer lifespan. After a day of not running and gunning—more like sitting and gunning—with Bill, we came to fully appreciate his RPR. It’s a basic build in a way, and yet has some very nice touches. “After building plenty of ARs, it was refreshing to work on a different kind of rifle,” Bill says. “However, even though it’s a completely different animal, it did feel somewhat familiar to me, probably because of the fact that many AR parts fit on this rifle. I’ve got to hand it to the designers at Ruger. They made a precision bolt-action gun that even a hyperactive shooter like myself can sit down and enjoy.” Thanks for the trigger time, Bill; we enjoyed your RPR too.

03 Clean the Tip It’s important to remember to clean the tip often with a brass wire brush, especially before you begin stippling. Melted plastic can stick to the tip, causing debris to be inadvertently applied to your frame. Pieces of burnt plastic can accumulate and give off more fumes than you want as well. A quick brushing on the tip is good enough, especially when the tip is still hot. Do this with each tip.

00

01

The Tips

Mark Your Pattern

We’ll be using three different OTD tips in this guide. The narrow 20LPI Finish Tip is designed to apply finishing edging and borders. The round 16LPI Waffle Tip provides fast results and can be used in multiple ways to vary the amount of grip desired. The arched Cutting Tip can be used for borders or flattening material and removing raised portions. Its angle provides an easy way to cut straight lines.

In this example, we are going to stipple a pistol frame. After making sure our firearm is unloaded, we removed its slide so the frame is easier to work with. Using a permanent marker, we drew the borders of where we intend to apply stippling. Don’t worry; markings from markers such as a Sharpie can be removed with rubbing alcohol.

02 Define the Borders Using the Cutting Tip, we went over the borders that we drew with the marker. This is optional depending on what look you’re going for, but we like having a defined border. It makes it look neater and makes it easier to see what areas to stipple. The act of stippling is about observation and feel. Don’t over-do it. You can always go back and apply more heat and pressure if you feel that your first pass is too light.

46

UN12 / Issue 004

04 Stippling the Border Using the 20LPI Finish Tip, we carefully work around the edges of the border. This narrow tip allows us to apply a 20LPI of stippling along the curving border that the circular-shaped waffle tip that we will use later on won’t be able to fit. In the tighter areas we apply the tip twice in anticipation of places that the waffle tip won’t be able to access.

DIY: Polymer Stippling

05 Bulk Stippling The 16LPI Waffle Tip is great for making quick work of larger spaces. Back before the advent of these specialized tips you had to stipple each point individually. Now, with 16LPI of points, you can canvas an area in no time. Some people like to make their stippling lined up nice and neat, while others like to randomize their contact points. You can cover up any missed or bald spots by touching the surface again.

GEAR HEAD WORKS IS PROUD TO OFFER OUR NEW TAILHOOK PISTOL BRACES.

06 Redefine the Borders This step is truly optional. After finishing the previous step, we decided that we wanted to clean up the edges a little bit more, so we went back over the stippling borders one more time with the cutting tool as demonstrated in Step 2. This gives the stippling a cleaner, refined look.

07 Complete With the frame stippled, we reattached the slide. The 16LPI stippling gave the pistol’s grip much more bite than the smooth factory surfaces. More or less aggressive textures can be achieved through the use of different tips as well as more heat and/or more applied pressure.

When Customers Ask.... We always listen!

BOTTOM LINE Overall, we are completely satisfied with our first try at stippling by using the Oregon Trail Defense Deluxe Firearm Stippling Kit. The kit allows for plenty of options and additional optional tips and parts can really take one’s stippling capabilities to another level. We can see how the procedure can become addicting. The only drag was waiting for the tips to cool down in between tip changes, but that can’t be helped. Considering that professional stipple jobs can run into the hundreds of dollars, you can really save some money and have some fun while you’re at it if you do it yourself. OTD’s kits start at $65, with our deluxe kit running $115. Optional tips start under $4. Our only problem now is that we’re close to running out of things to stipple. Now, where’s that TV remote?

Sauer 220-grain Elite Match Grade OTM ammunition, all while suppressed. Taylor says that a PVS-14 mounted on helmet is a must for walking around, but when it comes to shooting a hog, a good IR laser and light combo is his personal preference. He doesn’t bother attaching the PVS-14 to his gun and just leaves it on his helmet. He aims by pointing the IR laser directly on the target while viewing it through the PVS-14 that is mounted on his head. Taylor explains:

“The Hexmag grip allows for multiple angles of attack to be used, and Hexmag tape assists sweaty palms on those hot, humid Texas hog hunt nights.”

“Sticking the night vision monocle on the gun gives you tunnel vision and takes away the advantage of your head’s natural movements. If I want to look at something with NODs on my head, I simply just look. If the PVS were stuck on my gun, I’d have to swing it around, which is slower and not always safe to do.” Because he isn’t using a night vision device on his ARpistol, he decided to go with the less expensive Aimpoint Micro H-2 red dot, which does not have a night vision mode. He explained this is because he rarely uses the red dot with night vision behind it. The $100 savings over the night-vision-capable T-1 model was spent on other parts of his pistol’s setup. If you don’t opt for the first class, at least consider the priority boarding upgrade. Another thing to consider is layovers. Unless you live in a hub city, the chances of your odyssey having a layover are usually 100%. Nobody likes spending more time in airports than they have to, but that’s exactly what will happen if your bags don’t make the connection. I never book flights that have less than 1.5 hours in between. Airlines run notoriously late, so the layover gives me an extra cushion if I have to rush to my gate. If you have one of those 40-minute layovers, there’s a decent chance your bags will be tossed on the next flight if the gates are not next to each other. “There are millions of moving pieces working in concert to get you and your luggage where you need to go and it doesn’t take much to throw something off. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”

Expensive luggage means expensive contents. I try to keep my bags as pedestrian as possible while still having the utility I require. My go-to luggage is the London Bridge Trading Medium Wheeled LoadOut Bag with Padding for checked luggage and the RE Factor Tactical Advanced Special Operations Bag and Crye Precision EXP 2100 Pack for carry-on. None of these bags scream “operator” due to their design and my color choice of black. Let’s start with carry-on luggage. I want to keep all expensive electronics and delicate gear with me. This includes night vision and thermal optics, radios, headsets, and my plate carrier and helmet. Wait, what? Did he just say, “plate carrier?” Yup. I don’t want the baggage throwers tossing my expensive Velocity Systems plates on the deck. If they crack, they’re useless. The same goes for the helmet. All told, my plate carrier is worth about $2K with armor and plates, while my helmet appraises for over $3K with comms, battery pack and mount installed.

Gear I always carry on my plate carrier, belt kit, and comms. They’re worth too much money to simply be checked. Plus, I’d be in real trouble if my checked bag with my gear was lost. Always carry on the essentials needed to work when you step off the plane.

All of the above gear fits easily in the RE Factor ASO Bag. The ASO fits nicely in overhead storage bins and under some seats in commercial planes. It counts as my one carry-on item.

ADVENTURE : : From Santa Barbara to Yuma and back : : 800 miles over 5 days : : Toyota Tacoma TRD with a FlipPac tent

South of Yuma From the Pacific Coast to the Arizona Desert Text & Images by JIM BARNETT

H

ave you ever wanted to just bust out of work after a hectic

workweek and hit the open road to do some exploring, far away from civilization as you know it? That’s exactly what Jim and Olivia did. Seeking both decompression from a stressful week and the excitement of a new adventure, the two set out to the extreme south end of Arizona, a place that neither had yet experienced. Although not a lot of time was spent planning the trip because of work, Jim was able to take off on a Thursday afternoon to cram in some planning and prepping and make an early Friday morning start from their home in Santa Barbara, California. The first stop on the nearly 800-mile round-trip expedition would be El Cajon, California. Then, after visiting friends, Jim and Olivia hopped on I-8 and headed east.

“I didn’t know the area at all but found some 4×4 trails on my topo maps with some cool-looking topography, so we headed that direction,” Jim says. “After searching the trails and it being almost dark, we found a great spot that had a fire ring, but it looked as though no one had been back there in quite some time. We set up camp, cooked some dinner, and relaxed by the fire, watching shooting stars and constellations. There was no moon that night so we could see perfectly. “The next morning we explored the surrounding area, which proved to be pretty interesting. I knew there was a prospect mine at the end of the wash, but we found that there used to be a structure just across from camp that was littered with old cans and artifacts from a lifetime ago. We had no schedule, so we packed up and headed east toward Yuma, stopping at a rather well-known hot spring which we thought we might take a dip in. It ended up being so packed that we decided to keep trekking. “We stopped in Yuma for gas and to grab lunch in the Old Town, where we ended up walking around and checking out the area for a little longer than we should have; this is what caused us to get to camp way too late. After that we hit the road, with it approaching evening and us still being

There are spots in the monument where you will find yourself shoulder-to-shoulder with other people, but there are also super-remote areas where you will be totally alone. We opted to do one of the more well-known routes called Ajo Mountain Road before heading off into the more remote parts of the park.

“After the drive through Ajo to see the Double Arch, we headed toward the more remote sections along a series of 4x4 trails that take you south and west across the park and then back out through the north. Along this route you’ll see a lot of really amazing scenery, mines and old cattle camps. “The area is vast and the terrain varies quite a bit. We continued north toward the edge of the monument, where we were to camp on BLM land, and stopped at a few more cattle camps and ranches. One that stood out was Bates Well Ranch, which was founded in 1935 by the Gray family and was operated and developed by Henry Gray until he died in 1976. The Gray family started ranching here before the park was ever established, and they were allowed to continue to do so. The ranch houses are still mainly untouched, and you are able to walk around and get a taste of a lifestyle long lost. “It wasn’t all fun and games that night. The wind picked up to nearly 40 miles per hour, which was causing our FlipPac tent poles to bend and made it nearly

impossible to sleep. We had to make a game-time decision and ended up agreeing we should just pack up and

02

find somewhere less windy. Luckily, the Flippac only takes a couple of minutes to go from sleeping to driving, so we got on the road and went to search out calmer climes. We pulled off I-10 and found a good spot to get a few hours of sleep. We woke up in a pretty cool area and ended up driving some trails around there, marking off good camp spots because we definitely will be going back. “After a couple hours of exploring, we decided it was time to head toward home—but we had one more stop to make. This is one of our favorite areas

04

and we visit it often; it’s full of mines and petroglyphs. We stopped by to make lunch and hike around a bit before making the long drive home.” Jim and Olivia found an ideal way to get away from it all. The trip from Santa Barbara to Yuma and back took a total of four nights and five days to complete and sounds as fun as it looks. Jim says that although he wasn’t able to four-wheel as much as he wanted to, not all trips are about hitting trails as much as they are about just getting outside and enjoying this beautiful country we have. Rainier Arms added a collection of aftermarket upgrades, including SIG’s own SRD762Ti QD suppressor as well as SIG Sauer’s Romeo5 Tread red dot and Juliet6 6x magnifier. Danger Close Armament did the custom stipple work on the factory stock pistol grip, and the entire package was custom Cerakoted by Nevada Cerakote in their proprietary APODZ Elemntz camo pattern. nspired by UN12’s simple yet bold iconography and a heavy helping of the futuristic dystopian look

of movies like “District 9,” the Battle Arms Development version of the SIGM400 Tread possesses a distinctly industrial look that would fit right in with the likes of Boba Fett, or even in the world of “Blade Runner.” With so many details hidden throughout this rifle, you can find something new every time you look at it. Adorned with plenty of deep laser etchings and extremely detailed Cerakote work, this rifle has a powerful, exciting look. Battle Arms Development went for a cohesive theme to focus on rather than simply throwing a bunch of parts on a gun. The result is a sharp-looking rifle that’s upgraded with an assortment of high-end parts that work in sync with one another. Like the other build, it may not look like it, but this Tread also makes use of most of its original parts, including upper and lower receivers, bolt carrier group, barrel, low-profile gas block and three-prong flash hider. Battle Arms Development added SIG’s Romeo5 Tread red-dot optic as well as M400 Tread adjustable flip sights, along with a collection of their own proprietary accessories. Although there are many additions on this Tread, it remains lightweight and feels like a rifle that maintains all of its utility.

production item. It was just one of the crazy concepts that gets built here as a personal project for us to enjoy. But it really is an enjoyable gun to shoot and I’m very happy to be making them available to everyone now.” He continues: “How we ended up going into production was that I decided to take the gun to SHOT to display the Tailhook pistol brace. It was really a matter of wanting something other than another AR-15 in the booth, to be different more than anything else. Well, it got lots of attention. We had writers, dealers, other manufacturers and even TV show hosts commenting on it. They all wanted one for themselves. “So by the final day of SHOT, I was thinking I needed to make some more of them. I ran around that last day talking to suppliers and trying to put together a plan. Then I took it to the NRA show to see what the general public thought. It was a huge success. I was doing interviews trying to talk about Tailhook braces and the hosts wanted to just talk about the bolt pistol.”

Gear Head Works may be known for its successful line of Tailhook pistol braces, but the company actually got its start making aftermarket parts for bullpup rifles like the IWI Tavor and Steyr Aug. Paul fills us in: “We have been doing that for years as I love bullpups and there wasn’t any good aftermarket support for them. Most people think all we do is arm braces, but it isn’t what got the company started. The Tailhook concept rolled around in the back of my head for a long time along with the rest of them. So I kept working on the designs and even made two entire pre-production runs of the Mod 1 before it was made public in 2017. It was a long time in development with lots of investment in all the testing and patent protection.” Something that few know is that Gear Head Works also does design and consulting work outside the firearms industry. Paul explains: “We’ve designed and produced automated machinery for various industries to help streamline their operations and reduce costs. We don’t do as much of that anymore since the Tailhooks have kept us so busy.”

“One” is a bold and unique name for a gun. Just how did Paul and the crew come up with the pistol’s name? He tells us: “On the way home from NRA, we spent a lot of time brainstorming over what to call it. There must have been over 200 suggestions with the crew in the truck on that ride back. The name still wasn’t settled on, though. As time passed, we kept working on bringing it to production and finalizing design tweaks. Every so often we would discuss names again. There were always

“The options are only as limited as your own imagination, and as evidenced by this build Paul’s imagination seems to have no limit.” 106

“Reactive” targets provide a defined objective or end-state: knocking the target down. Depending on the type of reactive target, it can take multiple impacts for the target to fall down. This provides the benefit of requiring the shooter to focus more on the fundamentals of marksmanship and situational awareness, rather than a specific method of engagement or “shooting drill.” One of my favorite courses of fire is the “Break Out Drill.” This exercise captures all

the fundamentals of fire and maneuver— shoot, move, communicate. • The shooter will start from one point of domination with the goal of moving to another point of domination, which can between 50100 meters away. • During the shooter’s movement, the shooter will engage reactive targets until desired effects are obtained—the target falls down. • The shooter will not move past reactive targets, and on to the next point of

domination, until desired effects are achieved. This prompts the shooter to sustain situational awareness and adjust his/her point of aim on target if necessary.

Sometime after the show, Chris received his carbon-fiber-equipped Warrior 2 V.2 and immediately started carrying it. Another factor to keep people safe is to keep guns out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have access to them. As you are aware, a quality firearm safe can keep your firearms safe from theft, fire, and unauthorized access. That’ll work for times when you don’t need your gun, but what if you need immediate access to it in the event of a threat or other emergency? Having your gun locked up isn’t going to do you any good during those times, is it? Luckily for us, safe makers have long anticipated this need and have developed smaller safes that can be placed where you
