LIONS CLAIM 2003 NCAA DIVISION II VOLLEYBALL TITLE

The University of North Alabama volleyball team's 2003 NCAA Division II National Championship was an unlikely end to a season that began with great promise but appeared to be headed for an unexpectedly quick end. UNA had boasted one of the most powerful collegiate volleyball programs in the nation over the last eight years, making eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances and going to three Elite Eights. But entering the 2003 NCAA Tournament, the Lions had lost seven matches. That was a loss total the Lions had only seen once since 1995. UNA had also failed to win the Gulf South Conference championship for the first time in eight years, losing in the championship match to Harding. UNA had also fallen out of the Division II poll during the 2003 season, ending a streak of being ranked in 83 consecutive polls. The Lions entered the 2003 post-season ranked No. 23 in the nation. Despite the odds, UNA rolled through six NCAA Tournament matches undefeated and claimed not only the first volleyball national championship in school history but also the first national title ever won by a UNA women's athletic team. It was also the first NCAA volleyball title for a school from the state of Alabama or the Gulf South

Conference. First UNA avenged its GSC Tournament loss to Harding, routing the Lady Bisons 3-0. The Lions then destroyed host Truman State 3-0 before claiming the South Central Region title with a 3-2 win over Central Missouri State. At the Elite Eight in San Bernardino, Calif., UNA beat Lock Haven 3-2 in the quarterfinal, then beat Grand Valley State 3-1 to advance to the championship match. In the finals it was all UNA as the Lions defeated

Concordia-St. Paul 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-22) for the national title. UNA closed the season at 33-7. In addition to head coach Matt Peck being named Division II Coach of the Year, seniors Yana Ninova and Ashley Moffitt were named to AllAmerica teams. It was the third time in four years for Moffitt to earn All-America honors, while Ninova made All-American for the second time. The duo both earned All-GSC and All-South Central Region honors for the fourth consecutive year and played on Lion teams that posted a combined 135-19 record.

19

Senior Te'Jaye Redd was named honorable mention All-American and was also an All-GSC and All-South Central Region pick. Coach Matt Peck departed following the conclusion of the season but his legacy at UNA includes a 312-61 record over nine seasons, seven Gulf South Conference championships, eight NCAA Tournament appearances, four regional titles and one Division II National Championship.

Made up of some of the strongest private schools and fastest growing state schools in the country, the ASUN boasts a mixture of old and new tradition, and change that cannot be matched. The ASUN membership will sit at 10 member institutions with Bellarmine University set to join in 2020-21. The conference concluded the 2018-19 academic year with more outstanding student-athletes excelling in both the classroom and playing field than ever before. The ASUN Conference adopted four beams that supports the mission of the league and its member institutions:

ST U DE N T S FI RST

We Put Students First...

|

RISE

|

CONNE CT

|

IM PACT

In everything we do the student-athlete comes first. We lead by example in embracing a student-first culture. • The ASUN SAAC formulated a Social Media Campaign to raise awareness for Mental Health among student-athletes across the NCAA. Held in late April, student-athletes from the conference shared their stories and struggles to help break the stigma of mental health.

We Can Rise... We have a history of firsts and remain committed to elevating our student-athletes and bettering our future. • The 2018-19 season will go down as the best in ASUN Conference history in terms of postseason success as league teams totaled 19 wins in national postseason tournaments. Of the 19 team wins, nine came in NCAA Tournaments across eight different sports, while Lipscomb became the first-ever ASUN team to reach the NIT Finals.

We Can Connect... We are united as a community of students, athletes, coaches, faculty, administrators, staff and fans. • The 2018-19 academic year saw a record number of broadcasts with 557, an increase of 25 percent from last year. The ASUN continued its expansion of the ESPN partnership with the entirety of the league’s broadcasts shifting to a new platform, ESPN+.

We Can Impact... Our success resides in the impact we make in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Making a difference counts. • A total of 13 teams from ASUN Conference member and affiliate institutions were recognized with Academic Progress Rate Public Recognition Awards. A total of eight ASUN sports are represented this year including Women’s Basketball, Men’s & Women’s Cross Country, Men’s & Women’s Golf, Women’s Lacrosse, Women’s Tennis and Volleyball.

LION ALL-AMERICA, ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA LIONS ACHIEVE RARE DOUBLE:

All-America and Academic All-America Earning All-America status in any sport is a rare accomplishment for an athlete, and even fewer can take it a step further and achieve All-America standing in the classroom as well. However, fi ve former University of North Alabama standouts were able to earn both awards in the same year. Ronda Price was named an All-American in 1997 and was Academic All-America in 1997 and 1999. Twin sister Rachel Price achieved All-America status in 1998 and 1999 and was an Academic All-America pick both seasons as well. UNA standout Vanessa Ferretti received both All-America and Academic All-America honors as a senior in the 2005 season. In 2016, senior Natasha Fomina was named an All-American in 2016 and Academic All-America later the same season. The following year, Lexie Bradley also accomplished the feat.

LIONS VOLLEYBALL HISTORY

The volleyball program at the University of North Alabama began in 1969 as a part of the Physical Education Department and was known as extramurals. In those early years the Lady Lion teams competed against all of the state schools as a member of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. UNA competed in the Northern District with Jacksonville State, Alabama A&M, Montevallo, Southern Benedictine and Stillman. In 1975, in the seventh year of volleyball competition at the school, UNA claimed the Alabama State C h a m p i o n s h i p . downing the University of Alabama 1-15, 15-12, 15-6 in the championship match for the title. The Lady Lions downed Troy State, Auburn and Montevallo in the preliminary matches before dumping Alabama. Don McBrayer, a physical

education instructor with the university then and now, served as the head coach for that first championship squad. Lillian Goodlow, a standout in basketball and volleyball at Bradshaw High School in Florence, became the first female athlete to be awarded an athletic scholarship to UNA in the summer of 1976. Another major step came in 1982, when the Gulf South Conference began awarding championships in women’s sports. The UNA volleyball team claimed the first official league title for women with a 3-0 sweep of Jacksonville State in the championship. The Lady Lions hosted the tournament and won all six of their matches en route to the championship. UNA added to that GSC tradition by winning six of the first seven GSC volleyball championships, claiming the crown in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988

as well. Three Lady Lion volleyball players, Julie Jones, Shea Lindley and Pasola Swoope, were members of four consecutive GSC championship teams each during their playing days at UNA. Also on the list of key builders of the UNA volleyball tradition is Ande Jones, who was a four-year letterman in the 1970’s, was an All-State member of the 1975 state championship team, then returned as a graduate coach in 1976 and as a full-time coach from 1979-94. In 1995, Matt Peck was hired as the Lions head coach, and in nine years he took the UNA program to the highest national level, with eight NCAA appearances, four trips to the Elite Eight, two Final Fours and the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championship. In 1996 Peck led the Lions to a 44-4 record that included the school's seventh

GSC championship and the first ever NCAA Tournament appearance by a school from the state of Alabama. In 1997 Ronda Price and Mariela Fasce were named second-team AVCA All-Americans to become the school's first volleyball All-Americans. In addition, Price was a second-team CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-America selection, making her the first athlete in school history to earn both All-America and Academic All-America honors. As a team, UNA claimed its second consecutive GSC Tournament title and earned its second NCAA Regional bid as well. North Alabama became the first school in GSC history to advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 1998. The Lions claimed their third straight GSC title and firstever NCAA regional championship. Also Mariela Fasce became the first volleyball player in conference history to be selected first-team AllAmerican. In 1999, UNA went 35-7, won its fourth straight GSC title and made its fourth straight NCAA appearance, advancing to the Elite Eight for a second time. Lana Fishback, Deja Trojan, Rachel Price and Ronda Price were members of four consecutive GSC championships, four straight NCAA Tournament berths and earned two straight trips to the NCAA Elite Eight by winning two NCAA South Central Regional championships. From 1996-1999 the "Fab Four" compiled a record of 15622 and 47-1 in the GSC. In 2000, UNA went 40-3, won a fifth straight GSC title, made a fifth straight NCAA trip and reached the Division II Final Four for the first time. Those feats came with six new starters and just two seniors on the squad. Those seniors, Gretchen Midkiff and Amy Bernstein helped UNA to a combined 152-21 record over their four years. Ashley Moffitt and Nesrin Seckin earned All-American honors in both 2000 and 2001.

LIONS VOLLEYBALL HISTORY

In 2002, UNA won an unprecedented seventh straight GSC title and 13th overall volleyball crown. Sandra Alexander set an all-time NCAA Division II record for career hitting percentage and Anna Bondarenko and Yana Ninova were named All-American. In 2003 UNA failed to win the GSC title for the first time in eight years, losing in the championship match. But that loss propelled the Lions to even greater heights as UNA rolled through the NCAA South Central Regional, the Elite Eight and Final Four to win the first national championship ever claimed by a UNA women's athletic team. Setter Ashley Moffitt was named All-American for the third time, led the nation in assists and set two Division II national records. Ninova was also named All-American again and helped lead UNA to a 33-7 record. UNA defeated Concordia-St. Paul 3-0 in the finals to clinch the championship at San Bernardino, Calif. In 2004, Stephanie Radecki became UNA's eighth head coach and guided the team to a 24-7 record during her first season. Vanessa Ferretti received honorable mention All-American honors as the Lions advanced to the South Central Regional Tournament after regaining the GSC title. The 2005 season was one of the Lions' best ever as the team posted a 36-2 record and racked up individual awards. Ferretti was joined by setter Laura Bellinger as first team All-America selections. The Lions fell one victory shy of the 2006 national championship. Top-ranked Tampa defeated UNA 3-1 in the finals of the NCAA Tournament in Pensacola, Fla. The post-season run capped a 35-6 campaign. Bellinger was again a first team All-American, while Megan Stout was a third-team selection and Radecki was named the GSC East Division and the South Central Region's Coach of the Year, each for the second straight season. Whitney Sanders became the program's 11th All-American with a second-team selection by the AVCA in

53

2008. She was also named first team AllGSC, first team All-South Region and was the GSC East Division Player of the Year. In 2009, setter Alison Jacobs was named GSC East Player of the Year. She was also a first team All-South Region selection and third team All-American by the AVCA. Sarah Roberts also received two All-America honorable mentions as the Lions returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2009 and 2010. The Lions made it three straight NCAA appearances the following season, led by second-team All-American Natalie Marsh. After an eight-year break, UNA regained the GSC title in 2015. Radecki was named GSC Coach of the Year while Natasha Fomina was selected as the program's 11th All-American. The

following year, Fomina was named GSC Player of the Year as the Lions repeated as conference champs. She later earned All-South Region, All-America and Academic All-America honors. In 2017, UNA completed its final season at the Division II level. The Lions went 27-8 and again advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Lexie Bradley was named GSC Player of the Year and also earned All-South Region, AllAmerica and Academic All-America honors as well. Following the season, Radecki was named head coach at Southern Mississippi and North Alabama hired Bob White as the program's ninth head coach. In 2018, UNA entered its first season as members of Division I and the ASUN Conference.

FLOWERS HALL

Flowers Hall has served as the home of the University of North Alabama volleyball team since it opened its doors in 1972, and has been an important part of the Lions success story. The facility currently holds 2,229 seats after its most recent renovation following UNA’s transition to the NCAA Division I level. Throughout its history, Flowers Hall has hosted numerous state and Gulf South Conference tournaments, and was the scene for the

Home of the Lions

first-ever GSC volleyball tournament in 1982, where UNA captured the league's first women's sports championship. In 2019, the Lions hosted their first-ever ASUN Conference tournament game when the women’s basketball program welcomed North Florida to town on March 17. In 1996, Flowers Hall was the site of the first-ever NCAA women's volleyball tournament

played in the state of Alabama as UNA hosted the NCAA Division II South Central Regional. UNA has hosted the event a total of four times, winning it at home in 1998 and 2000 before coming up short in 2005. Flowers Hall has also hosted three NBA basketball games in the 1970s and has hosted numerous NCAA tournament events in both men's and women's basketball. In 1985 the original synthetic floor

was replaced with a new synthetic floor. Also, in that same year a new four-sided scoreboard was added to enhance the Lion’s home court. In 1989 new theater seating was installed on the home side for season-ticket holders. In 2004 the maple wood floor was replaced, as were the scoreboards and scorers tables that had been used over the previous 10 years. In 2009, new additions to the scoreboards allowed fans to keep track of digs, kills and assists during volleyball play. The flooring was sanded and repainted in 2013, adding a new UNA athletic logo at center court. As the Lions transitioned into NCAA Division I and the ASUN Conference prior to the 2018-19 season, Flowers Hall got a complete $2.2 million makeover. The wood flooring was completely replaced. All seating was also removed. Wooden bleachers were replaced with plastic purple seating on the North, South and East upstairs areas. All lower-area seating was replaced with purple chairback seats. New video scoring

tables were added, along with a pair of 18’x10’ video boards as the arena was updated to host future ESPN broadcasts. Upstairs seating on the West side was also removed to make from for the Steve and Sheila Pierce Hospitality Suite, which features a 2,400 square foot common area that overlooks the court and two rows of

box seats for donors, special guests and VIPs. UNA went 1-8 at home last season and has gone 264-59 at home since 1995.

ASUN ANNOUNCES 2020 FALL SPORTS SEASON POSTPONED ATLANTA, Ga. - The University of North Alabama's fall sports competition in women's soccer, volleyball and men and women's cross country will be moved to the spring semester after the ASUN Conference Presidents' Council announcement today to postpone all ASUN regular season and ASUN Championship competition for the 2020 fall semester due to ongoing concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. "Obviously this is a huge disappointment," said ASUN Commissioner Ted Gumbart. "Anyone who follows college sports understands the dynamics that brought us to this decision, but that doesn't mean we like it. My feelings right now? COVID stinks. If you weren't putting my words into a public release, I might put it another way." The Presidents' Council decision on no fall competition will also apply to intercollegiate competition for any ASUN sponsored sports that have a designated spring championship. The ASUN Presidents' Council also affirmed that providing a spring season for the fall

sports remains an ASUN priority. The ASUN winter sports of Men's and Women's Basketball and Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field are not impacted by this decision. "We will make every effort to provide a quality competitive experience for our fall student-athletes during the spring semester," Gumbart said. "We're not in the position today to guarantee it will happen, but we can promise to make every effort to get there. We owe that to our student-athletes, our athletic departments and our institutions. Lastly, I'll share that I'm very proud of the way the entire ASUN family participated in the discussions over the past few months, including our students, athletic staff, administrators and presidents." ASUN member institutions may continue with permissible athletic activities related to training and practice in accordance with NCAA, local and state guidelines. The conference will continue to monitor all data and dynamics woven into the pandemic and continue to place Students First in its decision-making approach.

LEO III UNA once again boasts the only live Lion mascot in the country living on campus. On July 22, 1974, former UNA president Dr. Robert M. Guillot brought a 35-pound lion cub to the campus and Leo spent the next 14 years “roaring” the school to victory. The original Leo died on Jan. 20, 1988, and a great outpouring of support from the Shoals community resulted in Leo II being brought to UNA in July of 1988. Leo II lived in the compound that once housed the original Leo and grew to a weight of more than 600 pounds at eleven years of age. In 1997, Leo II was selected as the nation’s “Second Best Mascot” by Sports Illustrated. He died in February of 2000. Leo III and Una, born on November 18, 2002, and resided on the campus in the 12,764 square-foot George H. Carroll Lion Habitat. Una passed away in June of 2020 after a brief illness. Approaching his 10th birthday, Leo III is exhibited seven days a week from approximately 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. (weather conditions permitting), unless they are appearing in local venues. All funds associated with the care and feeding of Leo III, the operation of his habitat, and the conduct of a related educational program are funded exclusively by charitable contributions.
