Infierno en San Luis Potosí Inferno in San Luis Potosi REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ SAN LUIS POTOSI – Incendios forestales provocados que arrasaron con más de 10 mil hectáreas en el estado de San Luis Potosí, fueron finalmente controlados. Hay varias personas detenidas y por lo menos una persona falleció en los incendios.

La Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado (PGJE) informó que la Secretaría de Seguridad Pública había detenido a Alejandrino Ramos Durán, de 19 años, con domicilio conocido en Potrero de la Sauceda, anexo a Santa María Acapulco, en el municipio de Santa Catarina.

Las autoridades dijeron que el joven provocó el incendio de manera imprudencial, luego de quemar un área de su propiedad sin vigilarla, por lo que el fuego se propagó a otras áreas de la región.

Ramos Durán dijo en sus declaraciones que al ver que el fuego se había salido de control, había huido del lugar y se había refugiado en la cabecera municipal.

Sin embargo, su arresto fue posible porque residentes de la zona se dieron cuenta de lo sucedido y avisaron a las autoridades.

Sin embargo, las autoridades recalcaron que hay otras dos personas señaladas como responsables de este incidente.

Los responsables, de acuerdo a las autoridades, solo enfrentarían sanciones económicas.

“Están tipificados en el reglamento de ecología que van de 50 a 1000 salarios mínimos, este, dependiendo la afectación; esto va a consideración si de la manera, bueno

se hace una investigación y de la manera en que se detecta cual fue la causa se hacen sanciones”, dijeron oficiales.

Además, las autoridades hicieron un llamado a los campesinos para que eviten la limpieza de sus tierras a través de la quema o controlada, actividad considerada al margen de la ley.

Autoridades estatales indicaron que las lluvias registradas el 26 de marzo ayudaron a los especialistas para controlar los incendios, los cuales están en fase de observación para evitar que se reactiven.

Mientras tanto, el gobierno del estado informó que en total los siniestros habían destruido 13 viviendas y causaron daños a otras 11.

Una mujer de 55 años del municipio de Tamuin falleció al tratar de extinguir las llamas dentro de un potrero de su propiedad. “(Una) mujer de 55 años falleció dentro de un carro, en el ejido Villa Guerrero, perteneciente a Tamuin, quien inhaló monóxido de carbono”, dijo un mensaje oficial transmitido por Twitter.

En total hubo 27 municipios afectados, pero Ciudad Valles, Lagunillas, Santa Catarina y Tamasopo fueron los más afectados.

Se informó que 800 personas fueron desalojadas de sus viviendas y transportadas a varias escuelas y centros municipales de Protección Civil que se convirtieron en albergues temporales.

Los incendios comenzaron a finales de la semana pasada y se propagaron rápidamente por varios municipios de la entidad.

Dominican immigrant wins $338 million Powerball

NUEVA JERSEY – A Dominican immigrant became the winner of one of the largest jackpots in Powerball history March 23, when he bought a ticket worth $338 million.

Pedro Quezada arrived at New Jersey Lottery headquarters March 26 to claim his prize; he was joined by his wife and his siblings.

Quezada, owner of a small grocery store in a New York suburb, has been in the United States for 26 years.

“I felt pure joy, happiness,” Quezada said in Spanish during a press conference.

If Quezada takes the lump sum payment, he could receive $152 million after taxes.

This is the fourth largest jackpot in Powerball history.

When asked what he wanted to do with his money, he said his head was not clear enough yet to make a decision, but he knew he wanted

UNA VOZ STAFF SAN LUIS POTOSI – Forest fires caused by human interaction that caused damages in over 10,000 hectares of land in the central state of San Luis Potosi, are finally under control. Several people have been arrested and at least one person has died.

The State’s Attorney General Office said that the Department of Public Safety had arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the fires.

The man was identified as Alejandrino Ramos Duran, 19, a resident of the Potrero de la Sauceda in the municipality of Santa Catarina.

Authorities said the man provoked the fire after he started burning part of his property, but the burn was not properly supervised and the fire got out of control and extended to other parts in the region.

In his statements Ramos Duran said that when he saw the fire getting out of control, he left the area and moved to the seat of the municipality. However, some area residents figured out what had happened and notified authorities.

Authorities also said there are two other people who may be responsible for these fires. The people responsible, however, only face fines.

“In the Ecology regulations, (the fines) are set from 50 to 1000 minimum wages,

to help his “humble” family.

One of his sons said the family plans to keep working at their small grocery store, called Apple Deli Grocery, and maybe they will open another one.

“I know he’s going to do something good with the money,” his son Casiano said. “It’s a blessing, it’s something that happened and you just have to take it as it is.”

Quezada was described by neighbors as a working man, a family man, an immigrant who has had his share of difficult times.

Neighbors told a local newspaper that the family has had a rash of bad luck.

Two years ago his home was burglarized and everything was taken, from clothes to jewelry. A year earlier, a fire destroyed most of their family business.

Quezada said he wanted “to go somewhere” to enjoy some of his winnings, but didn’t say if he was planning to visit the Dominican Republic or Mexico, where his wife is from.

Authorities said 800 people were evacuated from their homes and taken to schools and civil protection municipal centers that were transformed into temporary shelters.

The fires started late last week and quickly spread throughout several municipalities.

¿Necesito contratar a un abogado para el programa de Acción Diferida?

Por DAVID RICHMOND Recientemente una persona hizo su solicitud para el programa de Acción Diferida sin la asistencia de un abogado y recibió una solicitud para que enviara más evidencia.

No solamente usted tiene que llenar correctamente las formas adecuadas, también tiene que calificar en base a las reglas y regulaciones que ha puesto el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas. El problema que surge con la mayoría de las preguntas legales es ¿qué es un crimen menor significante? ¿Qué es una acusación de felonía bajo la ley federal o estatal? ¿Qué son condenas múltiples por crímenes menores? ¿Qué es una violación a una ordenanza, una petición de delincuencia juvenil o un acto criminal?

Aquí es cuando usted realmente necesita la

Do I need to hire an attorney for the Deferred Action program?

Recently a person filed for Deferred Action without the assistance of an attorney and received a request for evidence.

They came into my office in a great panic, fearing that their application would be denied and they would end up being deported from the United States, both of which are real possibilities concerning the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) program.

Not only do you have to properly fill out the appropriate forms, you also have to be qualified based on the rules and regulations that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement have put forward. The problem that arises with most legal questions is, what is a significant misdemeanor, what is a felony charge under federal or state law, what are multiple misdemeanor convictions, what is an ordinance violation, juvenile delinquency petition or

criminal act.

This is where you truly need the assistance of an attorney to figure out what happened in the past and do you currently qualify for the program.

What I’ve learned in my 12 years of being an attorney helping people with immigration is no two stories are completely the same. Some people came to the United States and left for a short period of time, but how short a period of time depends on the intent of why you left for immigration purposes.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement also says you cannot be a threat to society, what is a threat to society? You can have been convicted of no crimes and still be found to be a threat to society.

When somebody applies for the DACA program, what they are saying to the U.S. Immigration Service is “Here I am, I’m in the United States and I’m illegally in the

United States,” and then you say “please do not deport me.”

Now, if you meet all the parameters of the DACA program we are very confident that your case will be approved.

But the question becomes, what happens if your case is not approved? Will you be sent to deportation and removed from the United States? Will immigration just take your money and tell you to go away?

Hombre de Aurora acusado Aurora man charged in ‘smash de robos a negocios REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ AURORA – Elementos policiacos de Aurora y St. Charles arrestaron a un residente de Aurora de 39 años de edad, el cual se sospecha cometió una serie de “cristalazos” o robos a negocios. Las autoridades lo encontraron usando vigilancia mediante sistemas de posicionamiento global.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, Mark E. Swienton, de la cuadra 1300 de Monomoy Street, fue arrestado el 22 de marzo luego de que oficiales que lo vigilaban vieron cómo él tiró una piedra grande contra la ventana principal de una tienda de partes automotrices en St. Charles.

Swienton fue arrestado en el lugar por oficiales de la Policía de Aurora.

La Policía de Aurora ha estado investigando una serie de robos en las últimas dos semanas. Los videos de cámaras de vigilancia mostraban a un hombre que manejaba un automóvil Chevrolet Prism modelo anterior con daño en la carrocería en la parte trasera izquierda y al auto le faltaba el rin de la llanta trasera derecha.

De acuerdo a la policía, un oficial de Aurora realizó una parada de tránsito a un automóvil que cubría la descripción del vehículo del sospechoso y se emitió una orden para colocar un aparato de rastreo en dicho vehículo.

Siguiendo el aparato de rastreo, oficiales de Aurora vieron cómo Swienton aventaba la piedra contra la ventana de la tienda NAPA Auto Parts en St. Charles, ubicada en la calle Tercera, alrededor de las 10 p.m. del 22 de marzo. El hombre luego entró al negocio por la ventana rota. Los oficiales entraron al edificio y ordenaron al hombre que se pusiera en el suelo.

El hombre, de acuerdo a la policía, se resistió a ser arrestado y empujó y golpeó a los dos oficiales antes de ser tomado bajo custodia.

Swienton fue llevado a un hospital local para recibir tratamiento por cortadas y raspones menores, luego fue transportado al Departamento de Policía de St. Charles, donde fue procesado. Se le fijó una fianza de 130 mil dólares por el robo y su próxima cita en la corte es el 3 de abril.

Hombre de Aurora se declara culpable de abuso sexual de menores REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ AURORA – Un hombre de Aurora ha sido enviado a prisión por tener contacto sexual con dos niñas que conocía.

Antonio Gómez, de 26 años y residente de Aurora, se declaró culpable de un cargo de asalto sexual criminal predatorio y un cargo de abuso sexual criminal agravado de un niño, ambos felonías. A cambio fue sentenciado a nueve años en el Departamento de Correccionales de Illinois.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, entre enero de 2007 y febrero de 2011 Gómez tuvo contacto sexual con las víctimas.

Ambas víctimas tenían menos de 13 años cuando sucedió el contacto.

La sentencia es de la siguiente manera: seis años

por el cargo de asalto sexual criminal predatorio de un niño y tres años por el cargo de abuso sexual criminal agravado de un niño. Las sentencias tienen que servirse de forma consecutiva.

Por ley, Gómez debe servir cuando menos el 85 por ciento de su sentencia por el cargo de asalto sexual criminal predatorio de un niño y es elegible para recibir crédito en la sentencia de abuso sexual criminal agravado de un niño.

Cuando sea liberado de prisión Gómez deberá registrarse de por vida como un criminal sexual, de acuerdo con el Acta de Registro de Criminales Sexuales de Illinois.

Gómez recibió crédito por cuando menos 633 días que estuvo en la cárcel del Condado de Kane desde su arresto.

and grab’ burglaries UNA VOZ STAFF AURORA – Aurora and St. Charles police arrested a 39-year-old Aurora man suspected in a series of ‘smash and grab’ burglaries. Authorities got to him using GPS surveillance.

According to authorities, Mark E. Swienton, of the 1300 block of Monomoy Street, was arrested March 22 after officers conducting surveillance watch him throw a large stone through the front window of an auto parts store in St. Charles.

Swienton was taken into custody by Aurora Police officers.

Aurora Police have been investigating a series of burglaries in the past two weeks. Surveillance videos showed a man driving an older model Chevrolet Prism with body damage to the left rear and missing a right rear hubcap.

According to police, an Aurora officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that matched that description and a court order was issued for a tracking device for the vehicle.

Following the tracking device, Aurora officers watched Swienton throw a rock through the St. Charles NAPA Auto Parts store window on Third Street at about 10 p.m. March 22.

The man entered the business through the broken window. Officers entered the building and ordered Swienton to the ground. The man, according to police, resisted arrest by pushing and striking the two officers before being taken into custody.

Swienton was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor cuts and bruises, then to the St. Charles Police Department where he was booked and processed.

Bail was set at $130,000 on the burglary charge and his next court date is April 3.

According to police Swienton is on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections for burglary.

Meanwhile, St. Charles Police Department is investigating another ‘smash and grab’ robbery that happened last week at the Valley Spring Auto Spa, in the 3200 block of West Main Street, to determine if it is linked to Swienton.

In that burglary, a cash drawer and money were taken from the business.

Aurora man pleads guilty to sexual abuse of minors UNA VOZ STAFF AURORA – An Aurora man has been sent to prison for having sexual contact with two minor girls he knew.

Reportan intento de secuestro infantil en Aurora REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ AURORA – La Policía de Aurora está investigando un incidente de posible intento de secuestro infantil que sucedió la tarde del 21 de marzo en el oeste de la ciudad.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, alrededor de las 2:40 p.m. dos niñas, de cinco y 10 años de edad, caminaban de la escuela a su casa en el área de Laurel Drive y Robert Street, cuando vieron un vehículo detenido en la calle. Las niñas describieron el automóvil como un Toyota Camry de modelo reciente color negro, con

placas del estado de Illinois que empezaban con el número 9.

Conforme las niñas continuaron caminando, el chofer del vehículo bajó la ventanilla del lado del pasajero y mientras que hacía movimientos con la mano, le dijo a la niña de cinco años que se acercara al automóvil. La niña de 10 años le dijo al hombre que ninguna de las dos se iba a acercar y se alejaron.

En ese momento el chofer, descrito como un hombre blanco de aproximadamente 27 años de edad de gran tamaño, con acné en la cara, bigote pequeño que vestía una camiseta

negra y sombrero negro, acercó el vehículo a la banqueta. Las niñas pudieron ver que el hombre no traía pantalones. El hombre procedió a hacer un comentario sexualmente explícito a las niñas mientras se tocaba sus genitales, luego se alejó en dirección este por la calle Robert.

La policía pide a quien tenga información que llame a los investigadores al (630) 2565500 o a Crime Stoppers del Área de Aurora al (630) 892-1000. Las llamadas a Crime Stoppers son anónimas y califican para recibir una recompensa en efectivo de hasta 5 mil dólares por información que lleve a un arresto.

Attempted child abduction reported in Aurora UNA VOZ STAFF AURORA – Aurora Police are investigating an attempted child abduction that occurred on the city’s west side the afternoon of March 21.

According to authorities, at about 2:40 p.m. two girls, ages five and 10, were walking home from school in the area of Laurel Drive and Robert Street, where they saw a vehicle stopped

in the street. The girls described the car as a newer, black, Toyota Camry, with an Illinois license plate that began with the number ‘9’.

As they continued to walk, the driver of the vehicle rolled down the passenger side window, and while motioning with his hand, told the 5-year-old to come over to his car. The 10-yearold girl told the man that neither one of them would come near him and they backed away.

At that point the driver, described as a white male around 27 years old with a large build, acne on his face, a small mustache, and wearing a black shirt and a black hat, pulled the vehicle closer to the curb. The girls could see that the man was not wearing any pants. He proceeded to say a sexually explicit comment to them while touching his genitals before driving away eastbound on Robert Street.

The sentence is six years for the predatory criminal sexual assault of a child count and three years for the aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child count. The sentences are to be served consecutively.

According to Illinois law, Gomez must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and is eligible for day-to-day credit on the aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child sentence.

When he is released from prison, Gomez must register for life as a sex offender in accordance with the Illinois Sex Offender Registration Act. Gomez was given credit for at least 633 days he served at the Kane County jail since his arrest.

Policía de Aurora busca ayuda para identificar a ladrones a mano armada REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ

AURORA – La Policía de Aurora ha hecho públicas las fotografías de dos hombres que robaron una tienda de conveniencia en el noreste de la ciudad la mañana del 19 de marzo, para que el público ayude a identificarlos.

Alrededor de la 1:40 a.m. ambos entraron a la tienda BP Amoco en la cuadra 1500 de Butterfield Road, y se enfrentaron con el empleado de 58 años de edad que estaba detrás del mostrador.

Uno de los sospechosos mostró un arma y exigió dinero, mientras el otro se encontraba cerca. El empleado cumplió con las exigencias y los dos hombres escaparon en dirección sur a pie con una cantidad no determinada de dinero en efectivo Durante la comisión del crimen, el sospechoso descargó el arma dentro de la tienda pero no hirió a nadie.

Ambos sospechosos parecen ser hispanos, de entre 25 y30 años de edad. El sospechoso armado mide entre 6 pies y 6 pies 1 pulgadas, pesa entre 180 y 190 libas, tiene una franja de barba en su barbilla. Vestía una sudadera gris con capucha y pantalones negros. El otro sospechoso también es hispano o de raza blanca, de entre 6 pies una pulgada y 6 pies 2 pulgadas, pesa entre 180 y 200 libras, vestía una sudadera negra con capucha y un diseño logotipo grande en el lado derecho del pecho y pantalones grises.

AURORA – Aurora Police have released surveillance potos of two men who robbed a ortheast side convenience store early March 19.

At about 1:40 a.m. the pair entered the BP Amoco in the 1500 block of Butterfield Rd., and confronted a 58-year-old man working behind the counter.

One of the suspects proceeded to display a handgun and demanded money while the other stood close by. The employee complied with the demands and the two men fled the store southbound on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash. During the commission of the crime, the armed suspect discharged the weapon inside the store but did not hit anyone.

Both suspects appear to be Hispanic, between 25 and 30 years old. The armed suspect is between 6’0” and 6’1”, weigh between 180 and 190 pounds, and has a small vertical patch of facial hair on his chin. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and black pants. The other suspect is also white or Hispanic, 6’1” to 6’2”; weigh between 180 and 200 pounds, and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a large logo or design on the right chest and gray jeans.

Police are asking anyone with information to call investigators at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000. Callers to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to any arrests.

A search of the area by a Kane County Sheriff K-9 unit was unsuccessful.

At least 16 people killed in Michoacan and Guerrero

URUAPAN, MICHOACAN – At least 16 people were killed in the western states of Michoacan and Guerrero, in incidents allegedly linked to organized crime, on March 22 and March 23.

In Michoacan, an officer from the state’s attorney’s office said that early March 23 the bodies of seven men were located in downtown Uruapan.

Al seven had a bullet wound on the forehead, were seated on plastic chairs and had messages attributed to organized crime groups.

“We picked up the bodies of seven people who were seated on plastic chairs, with signs and with a bullet wound to the head, on one of Uruapan’s main streets,” an officer who declined to be identified said.

A statement from the State’s Attorney’s office said that the victims were between 20 and 40 years old and they remained unidentified. It is believed they were people who cleaned windshields on the city’s corners to earn some money.

The officer said the messages were signed by the Knights Templar group and they were a warning for rapists and

common criminals.

Also, the bodies of two other men with the same features were found that same day in the municipalities of Maravatio and Ciudad Hidalgo.

Meanwhile in Ciudad Altamirano, Guerrero, three police officers and four civilians were killed late March 22, after men armed with high-caliber weapons entered a local bar and opened fire.

State and Federal Police sources said two of the officers had died at the scene and the other while he was getting medical attention. Two other agents were injured and four civilians were killed.

En Michoacán, un oficial de la fiscalía informó que en la madrugada del 23 de marzo se habían localizado siete hombres sin vida en el centro de la ciudad de Uruapan. Los siete presentaban una herida de bala en la frente, estaban sentados en sillas de plástico y con menajes atribuidos al crimen organizado.

“Realizamos el levantamiento de los cuerpos de siete personas que estaban sentadas en sillas de plástico, con letreros y con un balazo en la cabeza, sobre una de las principales avenidas de Uruapan”, dijo un funcionario que pidió no ser identificado.

Un comunicado de la fiscalía dijo que las víctimas tenían entre 20 y 40 años de edad y que no habían sido identificadas.

Se cree que eran personas que limpiaban parabrisas en los cruceros de las calles de la ciudad.

El oficial dijo que los letreros estaban firmados por Los Caballeros Templarios y que eran una advertencia contra violadores y criminales comunes.

Juany Garza, concejal del Distrito 2 REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ AURORA – La concejal del Distrito 2 Juany Garza ha apoyado distintas iniciativas en toda la ciudad para beneficio de los residentes desde su elección en 2005.

Juany Garza empezó su primer mandato pisando fuerte, con tres ordenanzas que causaron muchas críticas, pero que eran necesarias para el bien de la comunidad.

Uno de sus primeros logros fue la ordenanza que eliminaba las caravanas de autos que paseaban sin orden alguno durante las festividades del 16 de septiembre.

Luego abordó el problema de los adornos festivos, que permanecían en las casas y negocios meses después de que la celebración había terminado, haciendo que la ciudad se viera descuidada.

Mejorar la apariencia de su distrito es uno de los objetivos principales de la concejal Juany Garza. Cada año realiza una limpieza

para los residentes de su distrito, en la que los residentes pueden llevar a tirar basura y artículos no deseados a una zona asignada, todo esto sin costo alguno para ellos.

Además, abordó un asunto de salubridad pública que venía afectando la ciudad desde hacía bastante tiempo. Ella propuso y logró la aprobación de la ordenanza en contra de orinar y defecar en público, que permite a oficiales de policía arrestar a personas que conduzcan esta actividad en la vía pública.

Un proyecto que desarrolló y benefició directamente a los residentes de su distrito fue la instalación de luces en todos los callejones del Distrito 2, para que los residentes de estas zonas oscuras se sintieran más seguros al transitar por su vecindario.

Las zonas al aire libre también han recibido la atención de la concejal Juany Garza.

McCarty Park, una zona verde ubicada en las orillas del centro de la ciudad, permaneció descuidado por mucho tiempo y era una zona de reunión de vagos y malvivientes, en la que abundaban malos ejemplos y situaciones de peligro para los niños y residentes de la zona en general.

Mediante su esfuerzo, este parque fue remodelado y actualmente cuenta con una fuente que las familias pueden disfrutar completamente gratis durante el verano, además de que el parque está completamente cercado y transformado, convirtiéndolo en un área segura y atractiva.

También se crearon dos parques de juegos, Freedom Park, en la esquina de Spring Street y East Avenue, y el parque Thaddeus J. Weisner, que cuenta con juegos infantiles para personas con discapacidades, que con frecuencia son olvidadas al momento de planificar zonas de diversión. Un tercer parque en el distrito fue renovado. El distrito también proporciona mantenimiento a todos

los parques del Distrito 2.

Desde su elección en 2005 los dueños de 33 propiedades en el distrito se han beneficiado de un programa que substituye las cercas de malla ciclónica por cercas ornamentales de hierro que le dan un mejor aspecto a la propiedad.

Otro proyecto de gran importancia para la concejal Juany Garza es el Desayuno de los Pioneros Hispanos. Sabiendo que en la ciudad los hispanos habían hecho grandes contribuciones que no se habían reconocido, la concejal Garza y los miembros del comité del Distrito 2 implementaron el Desayuno de los Pioneros Hispanos, el cual brinda reconocimiento a los hispanos que han derribado barreras y han abierto el camino para las siguientes generaciones en esta ciudad en distintos campos.

En el desayuno también se otorgan dos becas de $2,500 a estudiantes que acuden a la universidad y son residentes de su distrito.

Un evento que ha realizado de forma continua desde su elección para hacer que los residentes de su distrito se conozcan y convivan ha sido la tardeada de nieve y convivencia, conocido como Ice Cream Social, realizado en el Parque McCarty. En este evento totalmente gratuito los residentes disfrutan bocadillos, conviven y se conocen más.

En el distrito la concejal Garza también implementó un programa para adultos mayores y personas con discapacidades, en el que se les quitaba la nieve y se les cortaba el pasto, además de realizar pequeños arreglos a las viviendas.

Durante sus ocho años como concejal se han realizado importantes obras públicas como es la división del drenaje pluvial y el drenaje general en el área de Spring Street, así como la creación de dos jardines para recolectar el agua de lluvia.

A lo largo del año la concejal Juany Garza

realiza eventos sociales y culturales para los residentes de su distrito.

También, con el apoyo de comerciantes locales, hace entrega de pavos a familias del área para el Día de Acción de Gracias. El año se cierra con la celebración de las posadas en distintas iglesias, para mantener vivas las tradiciones en este distrito.

Los residentes de su distrito también se han beneficiado de colectas de abrigos y la concejal ha donado gorros, cobijas y guantes a los residentes durante las posadas.

Además de todas estas actividades, la concejal Juany Garza es miembro del comité de operaciones gubernamentales de la ciudad, el cual aprueba todas las ordenanzas gubernamentales. También es miembro de la mesa directiva del Distrito de Parques del Fox Valley y de Joseph Corporation, una organización que compra y remodela casas para entregarlas a familias de bajos ingresos.

A favor del progreso de la ciudad y de atraer nuevos negocios, Juany Garza ha trabajado para eliminar parquímetros en el centro de Aurora como parte del comité de parquímetros que desde el 2005 ha estudiado el impacto negativo que los parquímetros tienen en los pequeños negocios.

Uno de los principales logros de Juany Garza, que contó con una gran inversión de millones de dólares, ha sido la creación de una guardería infantil en el corazón del Distrito 2. Ubicada en la esquina de las calles College Avenue y Root Street, la guardería proporciona cuidado infantil de calidad a familias de bajos ingresos.

Por años se había hablado de la necesidad de este servicio en la ciudad, pero fue el esfuerzo y tesón de la concejal Garza que lograron que esta guardería entrara en funcionamiento.

AURORA – District 2 Alderman Juany Garza, since her election in 2005, has proposed and supported ordinances that have benefited not only her district but the city at large.

Juany Garza started her first term with three ordinances that were very much criticized, but that were needed in order to make of Aurora a better place.

One of her first achievements was the ordinance that eliminated the caravans of automobiles that crisscrossed the streets during the Sept. 16th festivities.

She then took on the issue of holiday lights and ornaments, that remained visible in homes and businesses long after the holidays were over, giving the city an unkempt appearance.

Changing the overall appearance of her district has been one of Alderman Juany Garza’s main objectives. Each year she hosts a clean-up day for district residents, in which they can take unwanted items and trash to a set location without charge.

Also, she took on a public health issue that had affected the city for quite some time. She proposed and obtained approval of an ordinance that regulates urinating and defecating in public spaces. This ordinance allows police officers to arrest people who are caught doing it on public areas.

A project that she developed and benefited District 2 residents in particular was the

installation of lights on all District 2 alleys, to make residents who live in these dark areas feel more secure while they are out and about in their neighborhood.

Green areas also received the attention of Alderman Juany Garza. McCarty Park, a green area located on the outskirts of downtown Aurora, was an area that didn’t get much attention for a long time, where homeless and bums spent their days, making it a dangerous place where bad examples were the norm.

Through her efforts the park was completely remodeled and currently features a water fountain that families can enjoy free of charge during the summer months. Also, the park is completely fenced-in and has become a safe and attractive area for residents.

Two more parks were created in the district: Freedom Park at the corner of Spring Street and East Avenue; and Thaddeus J. Weisner Park, which features handicapped-accessible playground equipment. People with disabilities are often overlooked when playground and entertainment areas are planned. A third park was remodeled. The district is also in charge of giving maintenance to the parks located within its limits.

Since being elected alderman in 2005, 33 properties in the district have benefitted from a program that substitutes chain-link fences with ornamental fences that give homes a more polished look.

Another project dear to Alderman Juany Garza is the Hispanic Pioneers Breakfast.

Knowing that Hispanics had made great contributions to the city that hadn’t been acknowledged, Alderman Garza and the District 2 committee put together the Hispanic Pioneers Breakfast, which recognizes people of Hispanic origin who have broken down barriers and have paved the way for new generations in Aurora in different areas.

At the breakfast two district residents who are in college receive a $2,500 scholarship.

An event that has been held uninterrupted since she took office is an Ice Cream Social, held at McCarty Park. This free event is held to give residents some snacks and an opportunity to interact and get to know each other.

Alderman Garza also implemented a program for district seniors and people with disabilities, in which they received snow shoveling and grass mowing services and also some minor home improvements in their homes.

During her eight years as alderman important public work services have been improved, including the separation of sewer lines in the area of Spring Street and the creation of two rain gardens.

Also, throughout the year Alderman Juany Garza hosts several cultural and social events for district residents.

With support from local businessmen, Alderman Juany Garza distributes turkeys to families for Thanksgiving. The year comes to an end with the celebration of Posadas at different churches, in an effort to keep district

traditions alive.

District residents also have benefited from coat drives and the alderman has donated hats, gloves and blankets to residents during the Posadas.

Besides all this, Alderman Juany Garza is member of the Governmental Operations Committee, which approves all governmental ordinances. She is also a member of the board of the Fox Valley Park District and Joseph Corporation, an organization that purchases and remodels homes that then hands over to low-income families.

In favor of the city’s progress and efforts to bring new businesses to the city, Juany Garza has worked to eliminate parking meters from downtown Aurora as part of the parking meters committee, which since 2005 has studied the negative impact that parking meters have on small businesses.

One of the main achievements of Alderman Juany Garza’s tenure has been the investment of millions of dollars in the construction of a day care center within District 2 limits.

Located at the corner of College Avenue and Root Street, the day care provides quality child care to working, low-income families. For many years there were talks about the need of an affordable day care center in Aurora, but her effort and determination made this center a reality.

AVISO SOBRE LA VOTACIÓN POR ADELANTADO

NOTICE OF EARLY VOTING

La Junta de Comisionados Electorales de Aurora anuncia los requisitos para votar por adelantado para la Elección Consolidada Primaria el 9 de Abril 2013. Los votantes pueden emitir so voto antes del día de la elección sin dar razón o escusa para querer votar por adelantado, empezando el lunes 25 de marzo 2013 y concluyendo el sábado 6 de abril 2013.

La votación por adelantado tomara lugar en la oficina de la Comisión Electoral de Aurora, 323 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora, IL, de lunes a viernes de 9:30 a.m. a 5:00 pm; el horario el sábado 30 de marzo será de 9:00 a.m. - mediodía. No habrá votaciones el domingo 31 de marzo 2013. El sábado 6 de abril la votación será disponible de 8:00 a.m. – 1:00pm. La votación por adelantado será llevara a cabo en la biblioteca pública de Aurora- sucursal Eola 555 S. Eola R., Aurora IL. De lunes a jueves, de 10:00 a.m. a 6:00 p.m. El viernes, la votaciones serán de 10:00 a.m- 4:00 p.m. Se podrá votar el sábado solamente de 9:00 a.m.- a mediodía. El sucursal Eola solo utilizara el quipo electrónico. Cualquier persona deseando votar con una boleta debe venir a la oficina de la Comisión Electoral de Aurora.

La ley requiere que un votante inscrito demuestre una identificación válida con fotografía antes de votar por adelantado. Los votantes que emiten su voto por adelantado deben demostrar una licencia de conducir, identificación del estado, o cualquier otra identificación proveída por el gobierno actual.

La ley prohíbe que la persona que ha votado por adelantado pueda votar de nuevo en el día de la elección. El voto emitido por adelantado no será contado hasta después de que las casillas electorales sierren en el día de la elección.

Las leyes de votación siguen. Las personas todavía pueden emitir su voto por correo proveyendo razón como es requerido por la ley.

The Aurora Board of Election Commissioners announces Early Voting Requirements for the April 9, 2013 Consolidated Election. Voters can cast a ballot prior to the Election Day without offering a reason or an excuse for wanting to vote early, beginning on Monday March 25, 2013, and ending on Saturday April 6, 2013.

Early voting will be conducted at the Aurora Election Commission Office, 323 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora, IL, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m; Saturday hours on March 30th will be from 9:00 – Noon. There will be no voting on Sunday March 31, 2013. On Saturday April 6th, voting will be available from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm. Early voting will be conducted at the Aurora Public Library- Eola Branch 555 S. Eola Rd., Aurora IL. Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Voting on Friday will be 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. There will be voting on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – Noon only.

The Eola Library will use the Touch Screen Machines only. Any person wishing to vote on paper ballot must come to the Aurora Election Commission.

State law requires that a registered voter show valid photo identification before early voting. Voters casting an early ballot must display a current driver’s license, a state-issued ID card or another Illinois government-issued ID with a photograph.

The law prohibits a person who voted during the early voting period from voting at the polls on Election Day. The vote cast during the early voting time period will not be counted until after the polls close on Election Day. Absentee voting laws remain in place. Voters can still cast an absent ballot by mail as required under law.

Shall members of the Board of Education of the Oswego Community Unit School District No. 308 be elected at large and without restriction by area of residence within the District rather than in accordance with the provisions of subsection (a) of section 10-10.5 of the Illinois School Code for mandatory board representation?
