‘Sandy’ causó muerte y destrucción REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ La tormenta ‘Sandy’, que azotó gran parte de la costa este de los Estados Unidos, ha dejado a su paso una estela de destrucción y muerte.

Cuando menos 59 personas han muerto, algunas de ellas aplastadas por la caída de árboles. Además, cuantiosos daños materiales se han registrado en varios estados de la nación.

El estado de Nueva Jersey fue particularmente afectado por esta tormenta, que tocó tierra la noche del 29 de octubre. El gobernador de Nueva Jersey, Chris Christie, dijo que había 6.1 millones de personas sin servicio eléctrico en su estado.

En Nueva Jersey la tormenta causó severos daños en las zonas costeras, donde la marea alta causó la erosión de playas, la inundación de ciudades, destrucción de casas, barcos de recreo e infraestructuras.

La ciudad que nunca duerme, Nueva York, también sufrió los estragos de esta tormenta. ‘Sandy’, the storm that hit most of the Eastern coast of the United States has left behind death and destruction.

At least 59 people were killed, some of them when trees fell on them, and the damages caused to businesses and property are high in several states.

The state of New Jersey was particularly hit by the storm, which made landfall the night of Oct. 29. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said there were 6.1 million people without power in his state.

In New Jersey the storm caused severe damages to the coastline, where the high seas eroded beaches, flooded cities, destroyed homes, recreational boats and infrastructure.

Meanwhile the city that never sleeps, New York, also suffered the hit of the storm. At the height of the storm all three metropolitan airports were closed. All public transportation and subway services were cancelled as well.

As of press time two of New York’s airports had resumed operations on a limited basis, Newark Liberty and John F. Kennedy, however, LaGuardia was still closed as waters was still on the tarmac and the infrastructure

had been damaged.

Meanwhile, New York’s subway system will be out of service for a few more days while workers clean up the flooded stations.

The public transportation system started operations on a limited schedule Oct. 30, but it won’t be enough to provide service to the 5 million subway users.

The storm, however, didn’t stop looters.

According to CNN, police arrested 13 people in New York, most of them for looting after the storm.

Also, a huge fire decimated several homes in Brooklyn. Another fire in the neighborhood of Breezy Point reduced to rubble about 100 homes.

A New York hospital had to be evacuated when its emergency power plant didn’t work.

Patients were taken to other hospitals without incident.

In New Jersey the rail system is completely shut down. Waters caused damage to at least 65 engines and 257 train cars, and it will take weeks to restart the service to the coastline.

“There is major damage on each and every one of New Jersey’s rail lines,” Christie said.

“Large sections of track were washed out.”

Meanwhile, New York Gov. Mario Cuomo issued a warning to state residents about possible contamination.

“Clean and disinfect everything that got wet,” Cuomo tweeted. “Mud left from floodwaters can contain sewage and chemicals.”

Among the states that were most affected by the storm are New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina and West Virginia.

"I just never thought I would see what I saw today -- ever," New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said. "It won't be same. It will be different because many of the iconic things that made it what it was are not gone and washed into the ocean."

President Barack Obama issued disaster declarations for New York and New Jersey; this way those states will have access to federal help.

While this area is dealing with huge amounts of water, other parts are dealing with a heavy snowstorm. West Virginia registered over two feet of snow. Over 100,000 clients

are without power in an area the t covers from North Carolina to Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio.

The storm was caused by the merger of the remnants of Hurricane Sandy with a cold front from the northwest and a high pressure system from Greenland. Sandy made land as a post-tropical storm at about 8 p.m. Oct 29 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

By late Oct. 30 Sandy was still a tropical cyclone with sustained winds of up to 40 miles per hour. These winds affected the waters of the Great Lakes, where alerts were issued for small vessels. In Chicago people were warned to stay away from the lake, as the waves were high.

People affected by the storm are not facing the possibility of cold temperatures. By the weekend temperatures are expected to dip into the 30s in the coastal communities of New York and Connecticut, as well as the New Jersey shoreline, where over 90 percent of the residents are without power.

As of press time New York schools are closed and no date has been announced to restart classes.

Damages to businesses and property are estimated from $10 to $20 billion.

Si usted tiene una tarjeta de residente permanente, usted es un residente permanente de los Estados Unidos. Por lo tanto, mientras usted está en los Estados Unidos, si usted comete un crimen de depravación moral, en muchos casos no tiene un impacto en su estatus migratorio.

La sección 212(a)(2)(A) del Acta de Inmigración y Nacionalidad, en su versión enmendada, dice que un extranjero que ha sido declarado culpable de, o admite haber cometido, o admite cometer actos que constituyen los elementos esenciales de un crimen de depravación moral o intenta o conspira para cometer un crimen de carácter moral no puede ser admitido a los Estados Unidos.

Stopped at the border

If you have a permanent residency card, i.e. green card, you are a permanent resident of the United States. Therefore, while you are in the United States, if you commit a crime of moral turpitude, in many circumstances it will have no bearing on your immigration status.

There are crimes that would make you deportable while in the United States, but there are also other crimes which make you inadmissible, meaning, once you leave the United States, when you try to come back to the United States you can be stopped at the border and denied admission into the United States, even if you have a permanent residency card.

What has happened in many situations is somebody who has a permanent residency card committed a crime many, many years ago. In many circumstances, that was before electronic records, therefore, when somebody has traveled outside the United States and reentered the United States, those crimes did not come to the attention of Customs and Border Patrol and they would allow you to reenter the United States.

If you committed a crime of moral turpitude while in the United States, that is not in all circumstances a crime that will allow the immigration service to deport you, so therefore, if you just stay in the United States that is not a problem, but the issue arises when you try to reenter the United States.

Recently, a lot of those old convictions from many years ago

have been converted into electronic records and now the Customs and Border Patrol has that information and is denying people who have been permanent residents for 20 and 30 years from reentering the United States.

What typically happens is the Customs and Border Patrol denies your reentry into the United States, and then they parole you into the United States and put you into immigration proceedings, where at that time you can argue your case before a judge, and in some circumstances a judge would allow you to stay in the United States, but otherwise a judge could order you denied entry into the United States and therefore, you would be deported.

Section 212 (a)(2)(A) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended, states that an alien who has been convicted of, or who admits having committed, or who admits committing acts which constitute the essential elements of a crime involving moral turpitude or an attempt or conspiracy to commit moral turpitude is inadmissible from the United States.

Now, if you already have your permanent residency card and you are charged with a crime of moral turpitude and found guilty, what happens is you have already been admitted to the United States previously, now that charge will not start deportation proceedings, therefore if you just stay in the U.S. you are O.K. but when you voluntarily leave, go on vacation or go to another country for whatever reason, when you try to reenter the United States , they consider you an arriving alien, and therefore section 212 of INA does not allow the Customs and Border Patrol agent to

let you back in the United States.

Again, many people have said: “well, I was convicted of a crime back in the early 1990s and I traveled many times and it was never an issue.” While that may be true, once it comes to the attention of the Customs and Border Patrol, and with electronic records is becoming more and more apparent to the Customs and Border Patrol people who have committed older crimes, that you are now stopped and you are not allowed in the United States and continue with your permanent residency.

Therefore, it is very important if you have an old conviction from many years ago, you should obtain a copy of those conviction papers and consult with an immigration attorney before you leave the United States, because otherwise you may not be allowed to reenter the United States.

While Linda Holmes has unlimited money from corporations and special interests to fund her campaign and try and mislead voters about her record, Peter Hurtado has relied on family, friends and citizens like you to talk about what is really at stake in this year’s election.

You see, Peter Hurtado is an immigrant like many of your neighbors, maybe even like you. He came to this country thirtythree years ago from Peru, just another young man in search of a better life in America. And after years of hard work, starting off as a day laborer and slowly moving up to where he now owns his own business, Peter is married and raising three children and fighting so that others have the same opportunities he has had.

The incumbent Senator, Linda Holmes, has made big promises over the last few years, but she has failed to keep those promises.

Linda Holmes said that she would protect those who need help – yet she voted to cut thousands of senior citizens, our kids and the disabled people off of their prescription drug coverage. She voted to change the rules for Medicaid, forcing many seniors and the poor off of their Medicaid coverage entirely. Linda Holmes even voted to cut education funding for our kids and grandkids, while also voting to give away millions of dollars to big corporations who donate thousands of dollars to her campaign.

Linda Holmes also has said that she would help the “middle class”, and yet she voted to raise your taxes last year – for you AND your business. If you earn $20,000 a year, Linda Holmes cost you an extra $400 a year, raising your income taxes from $600 to $1000. Less money for your pocket, and more for the government that cuts your benefits at the same time. And, if you’re lucky enough to run your own business, Holmes voted to tax your business another 2.9% as well.

When it comes to jobs and trying to get people back to work, Linda Holmes can only claim that she worked with the City of Aurora to help build a new park. Good for the kids, maybe, but not for jobs. Just another broken promise, when thousands are out of work or only working part-time and struggle to find a way to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads.

On November 6th, your vote will help determine the course of our future. More of the same – high taxes, high unemployment, families, the old and the young struggling to make ends meet and broken promises, or you can vote for a real change – electing Peter Hurtado, a man who knows our challenges, who knows our dreams, and who will work for us because he is one of us.

Mueren dos en aparente asesinato-suicidio en North Aurora REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ NORTH AURORA – Dos personas murieron en un aparente asesinatosuicidio en un centro de vivienda asistida en North Aurora.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, la policía recibió una llamada de auxilio del Centro de Vivienda Asistida Eden, ubicado en el 311 S. Lincolnway a las 8:51 p.m. del 29 de octubre.

La llamada reportaba a un hombre que amenazaba con brincar de su ventana ubicada en el tercer piso.

Miembros de seguridad del centro informaron que el hombre era un residente de este centro, pero no dieron a conocer su nombre.

Al llegar las autoridades al lugar, el hombre brincó de la ventana. El hombre, de 58 años de edad, fue llevado a un hospital local y transferido a otra institución hospitalaria en Downers Grove, donde falleció el 30 de octubre.

Al entrar al departamento del hombre, las autoridades encontraron el cuerpo de Tomi Vandiver, de 50 años, también residente de este centro.

La policía dijo que ella había sido apuñalada y fue declarada muerta en el lugar.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, Vandiver tenía una relación romántica con el hombre que brincó por la ventana.

Las autoridades dijeron que aparentemente Vandiver había ido al apartamento del hombre la tarde del 29 de octubre a recoger algunas de sus pertenencias antes de reunirse con otro hombre que vivía en el mismo edificio. La mujer nunca se reunió con el otro hombre.

El Centro de Vivienda Asistida Eden cuenta con aproximadamente 150 residentes entre los 22 y 54 años de edad con discapacidades. Este centro está dirigido a personas que no necesitan niveles extensos de cuidado.

De acuerdo a uno de los residentes entrevistado por un diario local, Vandiver y el hombre de 58 años tenían un noviazgo intermitente.

En una carta enviada a los residentes, la administración del centro describió a Vandiver como una mujer que se llevaba bien con todos los residentes. Le sobreviven hijos, tíos y tías.

Este caso continúa bajo investigación por parte de la Policía de North Aurora.

Aurora man sentenced to eight years in prison for rape UNA VOZ STAFF

AURORA – An Aurora resident has been sentenced to eight years in prison for having sexual contact with a teenager.

The man was identified as Jose Ruiz Ramirez, 33, of the 300 block of North Ohio Street in Aurora. He pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault, and admitted he had sexual contact with the teenage girl.

Prosecutors said that between July 1 and November 30, 2011 Ruiz had had sexual contact with the teenager at least 10 times in his house. Ruiz Ramirez knew the victim, but prosecutors didn’t say how they knew each other.

Ruiz Ramirez will have to register as a sex offender for life. He must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence and received credit for at least 322 days he spent at the Kane County jail.

Two die in apparent murdersuicide in North Aurora UNA VOZ STAFF

NORTH AURORA – Two people died in an apparent murder-suicide incident at an assisted living facility in North Aurora.

According to authorities, police received a call from Eden Supportive Living Center, located at 311 S. Lincolnway, at 8:51 p.m. Oct. 29.

The call reported a man who was threatening to jump from his third-floor window.

Members of the center’s security team said the man was a resident at the center, but declined to provide his name.

When authorities arrived, the man jumped from the window. He was taken to a local hospital, then transferred to another hospital in Downers Grove, where he died Oct .30.

When authorities entered the man’s apartment, they found the body of Tomi Vandiver, 50, also a resident at the center. Police said she had been stabbed and was

pronounced dead at the scene.

According to authorities, Vandiver had a romantic relationship with the man who jumped out the window.

Authorities said that apparently Vandiver had gone to the man’s apartment to retrieve some of her belongings the afternoon of Oct 29, before meeting with another center resident. The woman never made it to that meeting.

Eden supportive Living Center has about 150 residents between 22 and 54 years old with disabilities.

This center is for people who do not need extensive levels of care.

According to one of the residents interviewed by a local newspaper, Vandiver and the 58 year old man had an on-off relationship.

In a letter sent to residents, center administrators described Vandiver as well-liked by all residents. She is survived by children, aunts and uncles.

The case is still under investigation by the North Aurora Police.

De acuerdo a su declaración escrita de culpabilidad, Burrows entró al banco Associated Bank usando las puertas que dan al oeste alrededor de las 10:57 a.m. del 20 de marzo. Ella vestía pantalones rosa y una camiseta negra.

ROCKFORD – A Rockford resident has pleaded guilty to bank robbery that happened in March of 2012.

According to federal authorities, Latoya Shaunta Burrows, 32, pleaded guilty in a federal court of the robbery of Associated Bank, located at 612 North Main Street in Rockford on March 20, 2012.

According to her written plea agreement, Burrows entered Associated Bank through the west doors at about 10:57 a.m. on March 20, wearing pink pants and a black t-shirt.

She then immediately approached the teller counter,

bypassing the roped-off waiting line, and handed the teller a folded piece of paper that read, “Put the money in the bag and nobody will get hurt.” The teller removed the cash from the teller drawer but told Burrows that he did not have a bag to put the money into.

Burrows took the money from the teller’s hand, stuffed the money in her bra, and walked out of the bank.

Shortly after the robbery, Burrows was arrested by the Rockford Police Department in the vicinity of the bank.

She has been held in federal custody since her arrest.

Bank robberies carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, up to five years of supervised release following imprisonment and full restitution.

Esperan inicio de juicio en asesinato de niño de cinco años en Elgin, padre se encuentra fugitivo REDACCIÓN UNA VOZ ELGIN – El proceso para iniciar el juicio por el asesinato de Eric Galarza Jr. de cinco años de edad continúa su curso, con el acusado, Miguel Hernández Jr. estando tras las rejas en el Condado de Cook, y el padre del niño asesinado fugitivo.

Eric Galarza Jr. fue asesinado la noche del 7 de octubre de 2011, cuando alguien disparó múltiples ocasiones contra el vehículo lleno de niños y mujeres que salía de una casa en el noreste de Elgin.

Esa noche la familia Galarza comenzaba a salir de la cochera de la casa para ir a una cena con los abuelos de los niños.

De acuerdo a la policía en el carro viajaban Denisse Ignacio y Eric Galarza Sr., padres del menor, así como los otros dos niños de la pareja y una hermana de Denisse.

Al salir de la cochera se escucharon disparos. El niño Eric Jr. fue el único que resultó herido, con una bala que le entró en la cabeza justo arriba de uno de los ojos. El

menor murió en el hospital unas horas después.

Cinco días después del asesinato, la familia realizó el funeral del menor en una iglesia local, a la que acudieron muchas personas vistiendo camisetas blancas con el nombre y la imagen del menor asesinado.

Dos días después, el 14 de octubre, la policía anunció que habían acusado a Miguel Hernández Jr, quien entonces tenía 27 años, de asesinato en primer grado. En ese tiempo Hernández Jr. residía en la cuadra 1100 de Maple Street en Aurora. A pesar de vivir en Aurora, Hernández Jr. nació y creció en Elgin.

De acuerdo a documentos de la corte, los detectives creen que Hernández Jr. y otro hombre llegaron al lugar de los hechos en una camioneta Toyota Tundra negra, propiedad de su padre, quien iba manejando. De acuerdo a la policía, los tres hombres eran miembros de la pandilla Latin Kings.

Hasta el momento las autoridades no han revelado el motivo para este tiroteo que acabó con la vida del niño, sin embargo, investigadores han

dicho estar seguros que Eric Sr. era el blanco del ataque y que puede haber sido causado por problemas entre pandillas.

Las autoridades han dicho que Hernández Jr. tiene extensos antecedentes criminales.

Fue sentenciado a 4 años y medio en prisión por intento de asesinato y descarga agravada de un arma de fuego en 2004. También fue sentenciado a tres años en prisión por uso ilegal agravado de un arma de fuego en 2002 y a 11 meses de descarga condicional por posesión de marihuana en 2010.

Desde su arresto, Hernández Jr. ha estado bajo custodia de las autoridades en la cárcel del Condado de Cook y todavía no se tiene una fecha para el inicio del juicio.

Mientras esto sucede, el padre del menor asesinado, y aparente blanco del ataque, se encuentra fugitivo de las autoridades.

Eric M. Galarza Sr., quien actualmente tiene 31 años, tiene una larga carrera criminal. La policía dijo que había sido miembro por

mucho tiempo de la pandilla Latin Kings, probablemente desde su época de estudiante en la Escuela Preparatoria Elgin. A los 19 años fue acusado de disparar un arma contra dos casas en Elgin como parte de un operativo de su pandilla. De acuerdo al jefe de la policía de Wayne, Dan Callahan, la mañana del 21 de junio de 2011 Eric Sr. llevaba a su esposa a su trabajo en St. Charles, cuando comenzaron a discutir. De acuerdo a documentos de la corte, Eric Sr. golpeó y ahorcó a su esposa. Después de que ella amenazara con denunciarlo a la policía, ella declaró que él había sacado un arma de abajo del asiento y le había dicho que la iba a matar si lo hacía. Luego la dejó en su trabajo.

A la hora de la comida ese día Denisse Galarza le pidió a una compañera de trabajo que la llevara a la policía de Wayne a hacer un reporte sobre el ataque.

La policía de Wayne decidió esperar a Galarza Sr. en el estacionamiento del lugar de trabajo de Denisse para arrestarlo, ya que él debía ir a recogerla. Sin embargo, él sospechó algo y huyó del lugar. Waiting for trial in murder of 5 year-old boy in Elgin, father remains a fugitive UNA VOZ STAFF ELGIN – The process to start the trial in the murder of five-year-old Eric Galarza Jr., continues, while the man charged with the murder

is behind bars at the Cook County Jail and the child’s father remains a fugitive.

Eric Galarza Jr. was murdered the evening of Oct. 7, 2011, when someone made multiple shots at a

vehicle full of children and women that was leaving the driveway of a home in northeast Elgin.

That night the Galarza family was pulling out of the driveway to go have dinner with the children’s grandparents. According to police Denisse Ignacio and Erick Galarza Sr., the child’s parents, were in the car, along with their other two children and Denisse’s sister.

When they were leaving the driveway shots were heard. The child, Eric Jr., was the only one hurt. A bullet hit him on the head above one eye. He was taken to a local hospital where he died a few hours later.

Five days later, the family held the funeral. They were joined by a large group of people wearing white t-shirts with the boy’s name and photo.

Two days later, on Oct. 14, police announced charges of first-degree murder against Miguel Hernandez Jr., who was 27 at the time. At the time of his arrest he was living in the 1100 block of Maple Street in Aurora. While he was living in Aurora, Hernandez Jr. was born and raised in Elgin.

According to court documents, detectives believe Hernandez Jr. and another man arrived at the site of the shooting in black Toyota Tundra pickup truck, owned by his father, who was at the wheel.

According to police, the three men were members of the Latin Kings.

To date authorities have not revealed the motive for this shooting that ended the life of a child, however, investigators have said they are sure Eric sr. was the target of the attack and that it could have been motivated by gang issues.

Authorities have said that Hernandez Jr. has a long criminal record. He was sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison for attempted murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in 2003. He was also sentenced to three years in prison for aggravated unlawful use of a firearm in 2002 and 11 months of conditional discharge for marijuana possession in 2010.

Since his arrest Hernandez Jr. has been at the Cook County jail.

There is no date set for the start of the trial.

While this is going on, the child’s father and alleged target in the attack, remains a fugitive.

Eric M. Galarza Sr., who is currently 31, has a long criminal history. Police said he had been a long time member of the Latin Kings, probably since his high school years at Elgin High School.

When he was 19 he was accused of firing a firearm to two homes in Elgin as part of a gang operation.

Then in 2001 he worked on a plea and was sentenced to nine years in prison, but he was paroled earlier.

He also has a series of battery and

alcohol incidents on his record.

Months after his child was murdered, Galarza Sr. focused his violence on his wife, and then fled.

According to Wayne Chief of Police, Dan Callahan, the morning of June 21, 2011 Eric Sr. was driving his wife to work in St. Charles when a discussion broke out. According to court documents, Eric Sr. punched and choked his wife. When she threatened with filing a report with the police, she said he took a weapon from under the car seat and told her he would kill her if she did that. Then he dropped her off at her work.

At lunch time, Dennisse Galarza asked a coworker to take her to the Wayne Police Station to file a report on the attack.

Wayne police decided to wait for Galarza Sr. in the parking lot of Denisse’s place of employment to arrest him, as he was scheduled to pick her up. However, he got suspicious and left. A chase ensued through Kirk Road and then Dunham Road, until Galarza hit the curb, destroying the car’s front tires. He then fled to a nearby wooded area, where police lost track of him.

Authorities believe he has left Illinois and may be in Mexico.

Galarza Sr.’s absence won’t stop the trial proceedings. “We’d prefer to have him but we can proceed without him. Not having him testify is not fatal to our case.”

2 semi trailers stolen from Aurora business

AURORA – Two semitrailers, valued at $30,000, were stolen from a business located on the city’s far East side last week.

The manager at Victory Packaging, located at 4394 Liberty Street, reported that an employee had noticed

It is believed the semis were taken from the business between Oct. 19 and Oct. 24.

On Tuesday, Nov 6th Americans have not only the right but the responsibility to vote for candidates of their choice, from Springfield to Washington D.C. With our struggling economy, high jobless rates, increased taxes and countless new regulations that strangle small business, we cannot afford to stay home and allow others to decide our future. As a mother of two, I will not allow others to decide the future of my children and grandchildren! I will vote on Tuesday November 6th!

For President, I will vote for Mitt Romney.

A man with the experience to create jobs, strengthen our economy and give small businesses the opportunity to grow. Mitt Romney is a compassionate man, a family Gabriela Wyatt man. Romney’s experience as a Governor and his ability to work with Democrats and Republicans makes him the perfect person for the job. Governor Romney will be ready to lead on day one.

On the other hand, President Obama promised us all a better United States four years ago.

Obama has failed to fix the economy and even increased our national debt to a staggering $16 trillion. When Obama was elected the price of gas was under two dollars, the price of gas today has practically doubled. Unfortunately, his best idea for balancing the budget is to take more hard earned money from citizens like you and me. I’d rather save my money and create wealth for my family than give it to the government. He doesn’t deserve to be re-elected, plain and simple.

At the state level we need more independent thinkers who will stand up to people like Mike Madigan, who along with other Democrats in Springfield imposed a 67 percent tax increase on every Illinois citizen last year. What has paying that extra income tax done for you? Pat Fee is running for State Representative in the 84th District. Pat has been deeply involved in our community for several years. She is now focusing her efforts on impacting the policies that affect our daily lives. She is committed to repeal the excessive and unfair 67% tax increase and put more of our hard earned money back in our pockets, not Springfield’s .

Her opponent Ms.Kifowit has received $1million dollars from Mike Madigan, and she will surely align with him on any new tax he desires. Our state is nearly bankrupt, and it is our responsibility to elect people who will reject the very political machine that put us in this position. If not, they will surely come looking for even more of our money.

On a local level, I will be voting for Rob Russell for Coroner. Rob Russell is currently a DuPage County sheriff's sergeant with 20 years of experience in homicide investigation.

Yo preferiría ahorrar mi dinero y crear riqueza para mi familia en vez de dárselo al gobierno. Simple y sencillamente él no merece ser reelegido.
