fit for life
our vision Our vision: that every girl leaving Kent College is ready and equipped to lead a meaningful and happy adult life. Our next priority: to give every girl here greater opportunity in sport and fitness.
These new projects will offer both Senior and Prep School girls opportunities to experience a wide range of sporting activities using purpose-built facilities.
Sally-Anne Huang Headmistress 2
Ann Lawson Head of Prep School
We aspire to be one of the top girls’ schools in the UK and we are making big strides towards this goal. Giving girls the opportunity to grow and develop outside the classroom, as well as within it, is core to our ethos. We have already developed academic and creative facilities. Now it is the turn of sport. We want to give every girl the opportunity to find a sport or activity she loves and to practise it, developing a passion to endure into life beyond Kent College.

an upwards trajectory We have made significant strides forward. An improved academic record, a stronger teaching staff, loyal support from parents and alumnae… Kent College is on an upwards trajectory.
A constant ethos As we move forward, our ethos stays constant. We will continue to promote the values that make Kent College special. Supportive community, trust, morality… these stem from our Methodist tradition, our size and our setting, which remain the same and provide an unbroken link between past and present Kent College girls. A master plan Alongside ever-improving academic performance, facilities-development is critically important to Kent College’s future. This is why we work to a long term master plan (see over).
Completing the picture Having carried out facility improvements and developments over the last five years – for science, the performing arts, the library and much else – we believe it is time to complete the picture by addressing Kent College sport. Ultimately, it’s about the girls Our developments, our trajectory, our ethos, our vision – all of this is about providing the best possible education for our girls, to prepare them for successful and fulfilling lives. Sport and fitness play an important part in this education.

The need Our existing hall does a great job, but it’s under pressure. Exams, concerts, climbing, trampolining, PE lessons‌ there are simply too many conicting uses for one space, so the range of activities on oer at any one time is limited. Through increasing our indoor sporting space, the sports on oer 8
will become more varied and more accessible. Our ambition is that every girl will enjoy this space, whatever sport she chooses.
The plan We plan to add another, 4-court hall to our existing one, providing a viewing area and a valuable new classroom in between.

the new astro The need Having our own astro pitch will raise our game, because training on a good quality surface raises skill levels and makes for better players and more rewarding games. Creating an astro pitch is also the most powerful way to address the problems of unplayable pitches, cancelled matches and long journeys to use other people’s facilities.

the plan Designed in accordance with Sport England recommendations, our astro pitch will be marked up for hockey, football and athletics. Dimensions: 102m X 63m. It is going to require significant excavation, but the end result will be a superb addition to the campus. The benefits • Raise the status and popularity of hockey. • Cut travel and increase time for training. • A better surface for athletics, including a 200m track. • A huge increase in Prep school hockey will be possible. • Increase number of home hockey fixtures – especially rewarding when we can offer matches in both hockey and netball, side by side. • Great venue for football matches.
With this facility, the girls will fly. Sally-Anne Huang 13

funding The Costs The Hall The Astro Pitch Total
£2.7m £0.8m £3.5m
Costs include VAT and professional fees. Our funding plan Thanks to prudent financial management, the School is able to contribute two thirds of the costs. In many educational appeals the school’s contribution is much less than this.
School Finance We funded the developments shown on pages 4 and 5 from our annual accounts surplus, together with a short term loan from the Methodist Schools Trust – specifically for the Susanna Wesley Library and Arts Centre. The big slice of the pie shown on this page was also made possible thanks to the school’s healthy finances. But to achieve the Fit for Life project in the near term, we are going to need help.
Timing We aim to begin construction work in summer 2014, but this will depend upon the success of the appeal and on gaining planning permission.
The appeal target: £1.2m
Appeal deadline: 1st August 2014
The appeal: £1,200,000 School surplus and borrowing: £2,300,000 14
Completion of both projects is possible within 2015.

giving A pledge For now, all we need is your pledge – a promise: not the actual money. If funding and planning allow us to proceed, we will ask you to turn this promise into a donation. Three easy ways to pledge 1: Use the enclosed pledge form. 2: Pledge online at: www.kent-college.co.uk/ďŹ tforlife 3: By e-mail – just tell Judith Bearne, Head of Administration, what you’d like to pledge: bearnej@kentcollege.kent.sch.uk Giving over time When it comes to setting up your donation, you can choose to give it as a lump sum or phase it over a number of years. Gift Aid Gift Aid makes being a major donor possible. For instance, if you pay tax at 40%, you can give a donation of ÂŁ10,000 to the Fit for Life Appeal and the net cost will be ÂŁ6,000.
