I draw and paint on different surfaces, preferably on walls. I would like my paintings to be understood as personal, rough and humorous. In best cases, I produce “Blut und Scheiße Bilder”. My start was in a hospital—I don’t remember too many details, but I’m guessing my mother was with me... No, just kidding. I started writing graffiti at the age of fifteen. This relationship is constantly changing. For the first five to seven years of my painting, I had little to no idea what I was doing. I slowly realized that it was going to take tremendous time and effort for me to do any kind of proper work. Then, about five years ago, I started to notice some interesting aspects from my work, yet I never really liked any of it. There was always something that didn’t feel right about it to me... Today I try to make every possible mistake while painting. Therefore, producing new work feels very exciting. Of course, the results vary in their quality. So the relationship between my work and I is rather distant, yet strongly demanding. WHAT WAS SCHOOL LIKE FOR YOU?
It was a time of being stupid and making friends. Some of it was a huge waste of time... Nowadays, I don’t know what to think when some of my fellows act as teachers.

That’s a difficult question. I have a few situations in mind, but I don’t want to complain about anything in particular. Maybe this story fits well… Two years ago Lou Reed came to my city and I went to give him a canvas. In front of me in line there was a guy asking him to sign a record with a dedication for a friend of his who was having a hard time and blah blah blah. Lou Reed denied doing so, claiming “We all have a hard time.” The guy seemed a little disturbed, but I liked Lou’s attitude.

PT 1.) INTAKE ASSESSMENT
COULD YOU TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WORK? LIKE WHAT KIND OF ARTIST YOU ARE, AND WHAT YOUR ART IS LIKE?
I run a commercial recording studio, write, produce and mainly destroy other people’s music under the name of Chop. You’ll find me scourging the more avant-garde boutique areas, rather than all the typical music outlets for hamburgers. You could say my music falls somewhere between my past influences and an archaic future of influences in my head. I use a lot of old recording equipment to create a strange mutant brew of organic electronica. Part of the thought process is merging the organic world of traditional music with modern electronica, but with a nice balance of the two, I think... I record with a small group comprising of Malcolm Catto and myself, with occasionally Mark Burnley (studio tech) showing his face and Joe Fearon for musical guidance. We keep it all very minimal and live. We record drums, sequences triggered from the EMS VCS3 or modular synth, and a small synth built up from various 60s valve oscillators, like the home brews built by Silver Apples and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The initial recordings are made in the analogue domain. I’m usually left with a lot of varying music, mostly embryonic and in a very primitive form. I then transfer to digital, so I can manipulate and add colour to everything and try and mold it all into some form of organized sound, but with tons of flexibility. All pretty trivial stuff… CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR START? WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING INTO THE PERSON YOU HAVE BECOME?
I was born in Liverpool, and grew up through the 80s on a little peninsula called the Wirral. I was raised in an old dilapidated seaside resort in the shadow of Liverpool—well past its glory days. I would
hang out in video arcades, ride my BMX bike and dig the electro sounds that were coming from overseas via a circle of obsessed heads that followed early hip-hop and b-boy culture. So far it’s been a good ride, I’ve enjoyed the bulk of it, and I hope it continues for a long time to come. I’ve still got tons to learn and prove to myself, but I’m enjoying the journey so far. COULD YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR WORK?
We get on most of the time… More so these days I just do what feels natural. It has its ups and downs like any chosen profession, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I usually work on my own for the best part of the creative process. Late nights continuously working into the early hours tape splicing, editing, performing, etc. I like the late hours to make sense of it all, really. And it’s usually at these ungodly hours that I seem to give birth to these musical oddities. When I’m at the end of a project, I’ll usually take a break and try and get a fresh angle for the next time around. WHAT WAS SCHOOL LIKE FOR YOU?
Primary school was good fun. I was, hands down, the best breaker in our class, for one whole year, which was the final year, so my celebrity status ended prematurely. Next, we moved away, and I had to start high school in a new area, not really knowing anyone my age. I made some good friends, but for the most part it was full of dicks—a proper breeding ground for lizards in suits. I have one friend that I’m still very close with. He does wear a suit, mind you, but he’s not a lizard. From memory, my Street Sounds Electro tapes were confiscated by a fascist art teacher who couldn’t teach for shit and all he did was make us all draw apples and go on about U2! And not the cool “Silver Apples” variety either… Overall, I have good and bad memories. Doesn’t everyone? But

Loved music as a kid! Absorbed it like a sponge... I had access to a wealth of incredible music through my father’s diverse record collection. I thought art was a bit boring, to be honest, and for “arty-farty” types. But it’s funny, I ended growing up to be one of those arty-farty types, I guess... I’ve always loved comic books and graphic novels, and continue to read them to this day. Street art and graffiti got me into exploring art at a much deeper level, and through the Internet I’ve discovered so much great work out there. CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS? HOW HAVE THEY MANIFESTED THROUGH YOUR WORK?
Erm… That’s probably the oddest question I’ve been asked for a while. Well, I’m a bit short on groupies, if that’s what you mean… But I guess I am married, so that’s out of the question anyhow. Romantic relationships, studios and making music don’t usually mix too well together.

Over the years, I’ve worked with tons of great bands and artists, all of which you can read about over at: http://mr-chop.com/ Most recently, my album titled Illuminate was released on NowAgain Records, it’s a freaky mix of electronic-kraut-rock-escapism. I came to photography with the democratization of digital cameras. They are easy to use, you can reshoot until you have the image you want and it is easy to share. I was then given my father’s gear (camera bodies, lenses, tons of accessories), which started my love of analog photography. I love the fact it goes totally backwards in comparison to the current way people are experiencing photography. No
multiple tries to achieve the right frame. You have to use the correct settings. Then you have got to wait from days to months to discover the results of your work. Graffiti and street art are thoroughly represented on all the social media sites with instant snaps, instant shares, first to publish, likes, etc. Here I selected for UNDR RPBLC images of graffiti and street art (mainly from Paris) taken with a film camera.

Seeing my parents in the hospital was very difficult for me... But I am very thankful to of gone through the whole ordeal, it has helped me to become the man that I am today.

When I was thirteen, I got the opportunity to travel to Sweden by train. On the way there, I saw heaps of graffiti trackside and under bridges. When I came back, I just knew I had to try it. My uncle then introduced me to the book Subway Art, by Martha Cooper—it was like a bible for me. He didn’t know much more about graffiti, but he was helpful and bought me some cans. It’s been about ten years since then, and I still get that same special feeling when you’re out with friends having a good spray. coUld yoU tell me aBoUt yoUr relationship With yoUr Work?
I think you can compare it to the feeling you get when you first meet the love of your life. You fall in love the moment you see her for the first time. Near the end of ’13, Mafia, Freshmax and I painted a gigantic thirty-five hundred square meter wall just outside of Vienna. We started out with a rough plan of how it would all work, and planned to paint the entire building during the beginning of September... But after a month, it was clear that we needed way more time and money than we had previously calculated. It was right around the end of the second month when we all started to get worried. We were extremely tired, hadn’t had many days off and lacked the concentration necessary to paint without making mistakes. Then, on top of everything else, I broke my knee. I didn’t really realize it immediately, so I continued painting for the rest of the day. That evening, when my girlfriend came to pick me up, we went directly to the hospital. They kept me there for three days and put a bunch of metal shit around my knee. After taking a week off, I went back to finish the job. Although it was physically and mentally excruciating, I persevered. By the end, it had taken us three months of painting almost everyday… But, looking back, I am happy that it all happened. I mean—the added knee action was just painful and useless, but we wound up painting thirty-five hundred square meters, learning countless things about painting and ourselves, and reached incredible new limits. This was, for sure, one of the craziest times in my life.
