2nd INTERNATIONAL TEXTILE ART FESTIVAL TOAID CUDECA CARE The cultural association Lucky Quilters International of Benalmádena is organizing the II International Festival of Te x t i l e A r t i n t h e incomparable setting of the Bil-Bil Castle from 7th to the 16th September to help the Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice.

Last year, the I Edition was held in the same location and was very successful and well received by all who visited. The Exhibition counts on the collaboration of the Benalmadena City Council as well a s H o s p i t a l Vi t h a s X a n i t , Distribuciones González Martín, Costa Media, Cortinas Azahar and lovers of this artistic discipline. The participating artists are top

European artists Ann Hill (UK), Jo Dennisson (UK), Anna Slawinska (PL), Amparo Ruiz Cillero (ES), Galla Grotto (FR), Lyubov Lezhanina (UK), Irina Shashilova (UZ) and Irina Chekini (UK), some of them have won prestigious international awards. The Lucky Quilters International´s motto is WITH ART WE IMPROVE OUR WORLD, and they also wish to transmit that this is the main idea of this II Festival. Free entrance to the festival at the Bil-Bil Castle from 7th to 16th September.

This event is dedicated to the Cudeca Hospice (cancer care – Benalmádena), Kölner Herzkissen (breast cancer Germany) and Candelaria Centre (Alhaurín de la Torre - disability in all its stages). During the exhibition, raffle tickets for a patchwork work will be on sale whose proceeds will go to the Cudeca Hospice fully. There will also be an exhibition competition called "Textile Art in La Paloma Park” on the 8-9th September.

The Tourism Department of Málaga’s Town Hall along with t h e c i t y ’s m u s e u m s a n d monuments will celebrate the Day of World Tourism which takes place each year on 27th September. This day is being promoted by the World Tourism Organisation, which seeks to inform the public about the importance of all aspects of tourism. The slogan chosen this year by the WTO to commemorate this special day is “Sustainable tourism, a tool for development”. The festivities of the Day of World Tourism will include an “open day” in which all of the participating museums and monuments in Malaga will offer free entrance and some of the participating organisations will offer guided tours. Depending on the municipality where you are there will be different events. In Mijas, the main square had in the past events flamenco performances and a free sweet wine tasting.

In July we have the Summer Festival held at the Auditorium in Paloma Park opposite the Selwo Dolphin Show. This year we have live music, theatrical performances and Live music every night throughout the Spanish Comedy acts, which sounds a lot less attractive for the residents and visitors summer season from Rock Bands to that don’t speak Spanish, but the atmosphere at these events is worth the ticket ABBA Tributes - we’ve got the lot here to make any night a Great Night Out charge as our local families all join in the fun every year. Around the Bonanza area there is never a night without plenty of great singers and bands, and of course Karaoke shows, to enjoy at Bonanza, Capones, CJ’s, El Dorado BARAOKE @ EL DORADO MUSIC BAR and the local hotels. Sunset Beach, at the Torrequebrada end of the promenade, has nightly live music Opposite Hotel Siroco, under DoRamar Apartments performances in the hotel and spectacular shows in the Moonlight Venue next door. Mullarkeys on the main road through the resort has nightly bands and at the other end of town we have the nightlife at both 24HR Square and Puerto Marina offering great music, entertainment and party atmospheres through to the sunrise and beyond. In Arroyo and the Pueblo, we have no shortage of entertainment bars and ever changing line up of great performances, also check out Vinilo and Budha Bar.

Castillo Monumento Colomares

This is a Castle monument that narrates with its stone the feat of the discovery of a new world, misnamed AMERICA. It was COLON, (Chritopher Columbus), who with his great Faith, presented to the Catholic Monarchs his dream to travel west to reach the Indies. COLON was a great navigator, i l l u s t r a t e d i n g e o g r a p h y, astronomy, Sacred Scriptures, mathematics, humanities, etc. He wrote in classical Latin and in beautiful Castilian. He never wrote in Italian or Portuguese. Seven years before the discovery, COLON, presented its plan to other States and only the Catholic Kings accepted it. He needed marine experts for his companies and he managed to find them in Palos de la Frontera, province of Huelva. It was Martín Alonso Pinzón who managed to get those true "sea lions" to accompany the Admiral.

We have placed the head of a horse in bronze as a symbol of that great Huelva sailor in the manner of a Pegasus or mythical horse . It was the crown of Castile and his Queen Elizabeth who helped him and believed in him, and there are his shields also in bronze in gratitude and recognition. They left Palos on August 3, 1492, w i t h 9 6 c r e w, a l m o s t a l l Andalusians, and after a few days of provisioning and repair of their ships in the Canary Islands left for

the unknown and came to an island 33 days later. It was the day of Pilar on October 12, 1492. The island was baptized with the name of SAN SALVADOR, and the natives called it "Isla de las Iguanas". In the Castle there is a small oratory with the image of our Lord Salvador and accompanied by a marine bell in memory of the Island.

HIDDEN IN THE HEART OF THE 1000 YEARS OLD ANCIENT WHITE VILLAGE IS A REAL DINING GEM

PLAZA Olé IS A REAL HIDDEN GEM OF A SPANISH SQUARE ONLY 50m FROM THE BEACH OR 100m FROM BOTH PUERTO MARINA & THE 24H NIGHTLIFE AREA SOL y MAR The first bars and restaurants establishing themselves here in this small but beautiful Plaza were Spanish and most days shared the cost of entertainment, often Flamenco dancers from local schools to keep busy in the School holidays, and the atmosphere was out of this world. Fine restaurants, cheeky little bars and even more cheeky staff, together with never ending stream of performers and buskers made this square you had to visit early to get a seat in any of the bars and eateries. The recession hit Benalmadena hard and these little hidden Gems lost their momentum but thanks to the hard work and effort of the new wave of enterprising owners this amazing place is starting to regain its MOJO and you can feel the excitement returning, even without the Flamenco it is on its way again.

There is no shortage of fantastic places to enjoy a great meal here in Benalmadena, but to find such an amazing culinary experience hidden away down a small street with no cars or signs of the modernity that sits just around the corner, that is both rare and wonderful. In less than a year in the town, the owners have impressed people from all over the world with such a great dining experience that booking a table is advised in the evenings, although they open during the day for tasty snacks and beautifully arranged Tapas. My mother ran hotels and retail businesses for over half a century in England and always said that people “Buy with the Eye”. The danger when food is presented so well is that the experience does not match the expectation, but there is no danger of that here. The food is so fresh and so well prepared that this little Gem of a restaurant is gaining its own outstanding reputation and following.

Italian Plaza Sol y Mar (24hr square) New Restaurant Wood Oven Experience For years this centre of night life for Benalmadena has been in need of a quality restaurant to enjoy a great meal before dancing til dawn. Now we have 2 great venues open in quick succession with La Fuga for steaks, grill and fish dishes, and now La Perdita Italian offer a taste of “the Old Country” with real authentic Wood Bake ovens.

Plaza Sol y Mar, or 24 HR Square as it is better known, is the centre of nightlife for the younger and more energetic in Benalmadena. Not actually open 24 Hours a day, the square got its name originally from the 24Hr Cafe and 24HR Supermarket that were situated where there are now a retail store and Mister Noodles franchise, but if you want to stay out dancing until 7am most nights then this is the place. The Marina has plenty of restaurants, bars and discotheques but parties at a more sedate pace than “the Square”, and the drinks are often cheaper here than the port which suits the youthful crowd very well as vacation budgets often need a little help. Both residents and visitors fill the Square from around 10pm and continue to file in through to 1am or so when the party gets to full pace with a great combination of bars from the famous BeerKeller fun pub to Mango’s where the music is second to none and the atmosphere is great. St. Andrews is themed towards golfers and sports

lovers but is most famous for its Karaoke every nights, whilst Molly Mallones is a fantastic Irish themed pub with great music and party atmosphere.. Myriad other bars on both sides of the square offer such a range of experiences you need to walk around and find the one that suits you best, whether high octane fun in BOA VIP or chilling out on the terrace of Beer Keller, or of course there are the strip bars around the corner for those guys, and galls, that want to turn the heat up to Red Hot.

The frequent train service is used by commuters, tourists and visitors to the Tivoli World entertainment park. Just two minutes walk from the train station is Tivoli World, the largest family entertainment park on the Costa del Sol and right opposite the entrance to Tivoli World is another favourite tourist attraction on the Coast – the Telecabina (Cable Car) which goes up to the highest point in the Malaga Province.

Arroyo de la Miel has many great restaurants and bars and there is a big choice of self-catering holiday apartments, hotels and cheaper, but still high quality, hostals.. This is also a real residential town with a working population, good shopping centre, post office, banks, etc. It even has one of the very few women-only Gyms on the coast, Corpobello, which is opposite a large municipal swimming pool. You can also find the Butterfly Park here, next to the Buddhist Stupa Temple, the largest of it’s king in Europe. Avenida Constitution runs through the centre and is home to many English, Spanish and national franchise café bars, restaurants and stores. Although Benalmadena Pueblo is our Town officially, Arroyo is the place to go shopping, meet friends and mingle.

stony beach, besides being an area with a lot of small sea urchins that delight the most curious. Due to its crystal clear waters and rocky bottom, this part of Benalmรกdena is very popular for snorkeling. This beach is not the most popular because access to it is a bit difficult, especially for people with disabilities. It has no beach bar, no hammocks with umbrellas and you have to take the food with you, but it is a very quiet place.

Torremuelle beach is located in Benalmรกdena, next to the Valdeconejos and La Hidalga developments. Puerto Marina is only 5 kilometers away. The beach of Torremuelle has an extension of 1,000 meters in length and about 15 meters in average width. Of moderate waves, its sand is dark and consists mainly of skittles and gravel. Of solitary and calm character, the level of

occupation of this beach is usually low. Home to the British International College and some fine places to eat and drink, the area is really popular with visitors and resident as you are close to the Benalmadena and Fuengirola tourism favourites whilst being away from the madden crown. The main coast road passes directly by and there is a train station here.

Benalmadena Pueblo was founded during the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century. It was originally named Ben-Al-Madina by the Arabs, which when translated means "children of the mines". This was because ochre and iron ore were once mined locally. Today, the Pueblo has become a beautiful village of whitewashed houses, adorned by brightly coloured flowers. The municipality of Benalmadena, which includes Arroyo de la Miel, Benalmadena Costa and Torremuelle, is governed by the town hall in the Pueblo.

The Benalmadena Archeological Museum is worthy of a visit. It contains one of the most highly rated collections in Europe of Pre-Columbian artifacts from South America, together with a collection of local remains from before the time of the Roman occupation. Just outside the village are two modern additions to the interesting places to visit. The Benalmadena Stupa, or Buddhist Temple was inaugurated in 2003, and is the largest one of it's kind in the Western World. The views over the coast from outside are amazing. Entrance to this not to be missed attraction is free.

There are many places of interest in and around the Pueblo. Plaza Espana in the centre of the village, is a typical Andalucian square. This is where you will find a fountain with a statue of La Nina, who has become the symbol of Benalmadena. Around the perimeter of the square there are some lovely restaurants surrounded by orange trees.

The second, and most modern of all is the Mariposario de Benalmadena, or Butterfly Park, and is the largest of it's kind in Europe. The park contains nearly 1600 butterflies from many parts of the world, and is climatised to a tropical environment. Also inside are many tropical plants and flowers. Both the Stupa and the Butterfly Park can be reached in about five minutes from the Pueblo, by car or by the M103 bus, which stops outside.

A few minutes walk from Plaza Espana is the village church of Santo Domingo. The church sits on the edge of a hill and affords fantastic views over the coastline, 200m below. Below the church is the famous Colomares Castle. This monument was built in 1984 to honour Christopher Columbus and his discovery of America. The castle contains what is claimed to be the worlds smallest chapel, measuring just 1.96 sq. metres.

Benalmadena Beaches Benalmadena has a total of 17 beaches. The eastern beaches are large and are very well equipped, while the western beaches are rocky and mostly quiet, so they are perfect for fishing or sports such as diving. Santa Ana beach has a length of 500 meters and an average width of 20 m. It has a moderate swell. There are danger warning signs, surveillance equipment, the red cross and rescue team. It is easily accessible on foot and by car or bus. Parking area. Disabled access. It has a tourist information office, toilets, showers, phone, bins, cleaning services, rental of umbrellas and hammocks. Melilleros: It is one of the most beautiful beaches of Benalmadena, especially by the curious sea inlet that is formed and which divides the beach into two zones. The large sand area is usually frequented by young people.

La Perla: Very small beach located between two artificial breakwaters. Las Yucas: Small beach of sand and gravel. Bil Bil: Along with the beach at Arroyo de la Miel, it is a popular place along the sea promenade of Benalmadena.

Besides the presence of up to four Beach bars, there are volleyball nets and goalposts to practice football on the beach. Fuente de la Salud beach: To the east of the town, bordering with Torremolinos and next to the Marina. Its name is rooted in a drinking water source to which are attributed healing properties. NUDIST BEACH PLAYA BENALNATURA For the naturists, there is a small cove and nudist beach, accessible from the A7 coast road. Driving from Benalmadena along the coast in the direction of Fuengirola, double back at the roundabout after Torrequebrada and before Torremuelle. There is limited parking in the summer. You will see a sign “Benalnatura” indicating a steep concrete path down through the trees to the beach. There is a beach bar in season. Naturist only. NUDIST RESORTS Those who prefer to spend their entire vacation as naked as the day they were born, now have two options on the Costa del Sol. In the western Costa del Sol is Costa Natura in Estepona, where you can rent apartments within a nudist residential area; and in Torre del Mar on the eastern Costa del Sol is situated the nudist camp site Almanat offering Bungalows near the beach.

TIVOLI AMUSEMENT PARK This amusement and theme park in Arroyo de la Miel was opened in 1972, and over the years new rides and attractions have been added. kids rollercoasters for children under 140cm to enjoy, and ferris wheels, carousels, shooting galleries, Flamenco Shows, Jungles, Bumper cars and Castle of Terror for the older children. Fresh cut Avocado The consumption of avocados in the United States alone, has been climbing since 1989, when only about 1.1 pounds were consumed per capita, according to the Agriculture Marketing Resource Center, a research group that receives grants from the US Department of Agriculture. By 2014, about 7 pounds were consumed per capita, and now avocados are a popular food item -especially due to their health benefits. But what exactly makes them good for you? "Avocados are a fruit and one of the few fruits that are high in fat and low in sugar," said Dr. Donald Hensrud, medical director of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program in Minnesota, and a specialist in nutrition and preventive medicine. "Along with nuts, olive oil and canola oil, the fat content in avocados are predominantly monounsaturated fat, which is responsible for many ... health benefits," he said. "Avocados also contain other nutrients including B vitamins, vitamin E, vitamin C, copper and fiber, which add to their health benefits. They have a higher potassium content than bananas." Yet long before the green-hued fruit became a modern-day health food staple, the history of the avocado was preserved in the Americas some 10,000 years ago. Merriam -Webster dictionary. The name presumably is tied to the shape of avocados. When Spanish conquistadores arrived in the Americas, avocados attracted their attention, leading to the earliest-known written description of the fruit published in Sevilla in the early 1500s by explorer Martín Fernández de Enciso. Yet before the avocado was distributed throughout Spanish colonies, Europe and the United States, the fruit was consumed for taste as well as for health, according to a 2007 article in the Harvard Papers in Botany. In 1605, Spanish soldier and poet Garcilazo de la Vega described the avocado as "delicious and very healthy for sick people," according to the article. De la Vega could have been on to something, as avocados are now seen as a source of the healthy dietary monounsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fats are good for your health in many ways, such as helping lower your "bad" LDL cholesterol levels and being high in vitamin E, which promotes healthy vision, a healthy immune system and other benefits, according to the US National Library of Medicine. "In addition, the relatively high fat content in avocados is associated with a low glycemic response, which is the tendency of a food to raise blood glucose," Hensrud said. "Evidence from large populations studies suggests that consumption of monounsaturated fats such as contained in avocados decreases overall mortality.” How could you get those health benefits? Avocado toast has

become a trendy way to consume the buttery fruit in the US, but Jenna Stangland, a registered dietitian at the physical therapy clinic Viverant in the Minneapolis area, said there are many other ways to include avocado in your daily diet. "Avocado oil I think is getting to be easier to find in the grocery stores and more common as a type of oil to use in cooking or a marinade or as an ingredient in a homemade salad dressing, and then that oil contains the healthier fats rather than an oil that would have higher saturated fats," Stangland said. Avocado has a very high smoke point, the temperature at which oil starts to smoke, which makes it a good choice for cooking. “It's common to do fruit and yogurt and ice cubes in smoothies, but ... adding that avocado adds a really nice creaminess plus a healthy fat that might not be in a smoothie otherwise," she said. "Another one that I've tried, I haven't made myself, are avocado pops. ... It's like a frozen treat that includes that healthy fat.” However, because avocados are high in calories, Stangland cautions to watch portion sizes. For instance, topping a salad with about a half-cup of avocado adds 117 calories to your meal. “Just doing a layer of the avocado on the toast comes out to be about a serving," Stangland said. "At restaurants, or even preparing a dish at home, putting sliced avocado on top of a fish or on top of a salad, it can be really easy to just slice up the whole avocado to put it on top of the salad, and then that's going to be a lot more dense in calories."
