DESIGN OF A HIGH-EFFICIENCY INDIRECT PREHEATING SYSTEM FOR LARGE NATURAL GAS. FIRED

MOTOR-GENERATORS SUPPORTED BY COMPUTATIONAL ANALYSIS

Celsia, as a company of the Argos Group focused on the generation, distribution, transmission and commercialization of efficient energy, has been working on a thermal generation plant in Sahagún/Córdoba called El Tesorito. Currently they have the need to reduce operating costs associated with maintaining the motorgenerators in their starting conditions. For this reason, the present project has the objective of providing a solution through the design of a preheating system, with the use of renewable energy sources. Through a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation of a simplified model of the preheating circuit of the 16V50DF engine, it was obtained the power demand of the system, the behavior of the temperature distribution and losses associated to the process. In this way, three alternative solutions were formulated: heating through photovoltaic panels, solar collectors and hybrid panels. Subsequently, considering the most relevant design criteria, which are compatibility with the current control of the thermal plant, no modification in the motor-generator, high efficiency of thermal energy generation and installation cost, the heating through photovoltaic panels was chosen, with a detailed design of the structure that supports them. Finally, different operational scenarios were proposed where energy availability was modified by varying the storage capacity to obtain a cost-effective solution, together with an analysis of risks that may affect the development of the project and its operation.
