The start of something magical At Essex you’re not just a student, you’re a member of our community. We give you the tools to shape what goes on around you – such as voting on campus for the things that affect you every day. We provide you with endless opportunities to make a difference to your own academic and social life, and to your friends and peers. As a member, here are some of the awesome things you’ll have access to. Only the best
Get active
Our learning facilities are second-to-none; in fact we’re ranked top 5 in the UK for our investment in student facilities (Times Good University Guide 2017). If you want 24/7 access to our study facilities, our Silberrad Student Centre can provide all your needs in one amazing building. Or you might want to visit our Albert Sloman Library which houses over a million books including some of the country’s best collections on Latin America, Russia and Eastern Europe.
Whether you want to be the next Usain Bolt or you simply want to try something new, as an Essex student you can access our indoor and outdoor pitches and courts, all weather pitch, sports hall, squash courts, and climbing wall. And if this isn’t enough for you we also offer great value-for-money gym memberships to keep you fit all year round.
Essex Abroad The Essex spirit of adventure is why we value the international dimension of university life so highly. That’s why we offer a study abroad year on the majority of our courses. Immerse yourself in a different culture, develop your independence and improve your employability. And the best part? You can study abroad at no extra cost.
Learn a language At a time when companies in the UK struggle to find graduates who can speak more than one language, you can stand out from the crowd by developing language skills. At no extra cost, we give you the chance to learn a language from scratch for a year. Try out Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Russian or Spanish.
Try something new Our award-winning Students’ Union (one of the best in the country!) is here to support you and make sure you love your time at Essex. You’re part of our family – an unconventional family made up of thousands of unique and bold students. Start up a new society, get some work experience, or engage with a volunteering project – we can help you do almost anything!
Take part in art Show your work in our Art Exchange gallery or perform at our Lakeside Theatre. We host an exciting and eclectic mix of cutting-edge music, theatre, dance, comedy and film, so if you’re not brave enough to stand up in front of a crowd, engage with our arts scene by supporting emerging artists and performers.
