Graduation Special!

Welcome to the graduation special of the East 15 Creative Producer Newsletter. In this issue, we will be looking at the achievements of our graduating class of third years and giving them a proper send-off

From joining the course in the covid year of 2020, they have overcome challenge after challenge and have come out on top! Their skills have multiplied across all areas from theatre tech to making films to writing screenplays, tv show pilots and feature films. They've built new companies, hosted live events, livestreamed theatre shows and lent a hand with acting courses in their free time wherever they could. Not to mention that they also wrote, directed and produced an original theatre production (P 5&6) all within the final term of the degree

Within this issue, we also recap some of the exciting things that have happened this term and hand over the reins to two of our second years who will be taking control of this Newsletter and our official Instagram channel, @bacreativeproducers, so make sure you ' re following there to keep updated on what we are up to.

Third year filmmaking is one of the optional modules that five of our third year creative producers chose to take this year Assisted by industry creative Cleo Carmen Howard (find out more about Cleo in our previous newsletter) Within the module, our filmmakers successfully produced three

original short films and a fantastic documentary Across the production process our producers did it all, from writing to scripting, directing, producing, costuming, location scouting, set dressing, filming and editing! Then, they gathered with other East 15 courses in an exclusive premiere of the films on campus ahead of their end of year showcase

‘A special well done to Jake Jonas, whose film ‘The Barbaric Club’ has been accepted into the Liftoff Global Network!’

East 15's Clifftown Theatre in Southend was the host of our third year ' s first showcase which was an internal celebration with the other courses here at the Southend campus

They planned a fantastic evening of entertainment including live performances, short films, skits, scripts and sketches. The show i d f ll h f t f th

On the 23rd of June, the third year cohort organised a London Showcase to advertise their skills to an external audience of industry creatives and other new graduates. It was a fabulous event showing the full capabilities of this team of producers as they combined their student and professional networks for one night of Prosecco, networking and celebration. The evening proved incredibly beneficial to our graduating class and fellow creatives who were able to meet one another and discuss the next generation of the creative industries while enjoying a curated selection of projects completed by our third year Creative Producers

Among the attendees was Paul Tomlinson, the previous Director of Productions at the Queen’s Theatre in Hornchurch and acclaimed director in his own right. What a fantastic opportunity that our third years created for themselves and as a result, they have engaged in conversations that have put them on the radar of the right people in the industry

INDUSTRY TALK: ALISON DAVIS

Executive Producer Anna Davis visited us to share her personal experience of working in the television industry for over 30 years.

Starting out in a secretarial job at the BBC, Alison moved up the industry ladder from production assistant to producer, researcher and occasional script editor for longrunning dramas like East Enders and Casualty. She has produced television dramas for the BBC, Channel 4 and Netflix She is now an Executive Producer at the BBC and has most recently worked on GET EVEN Season 2 which is now available on BBC iPlayer and Netflix.

Alison talked us through the development of some remarkably successful shows including Netflix's Stranger Things, walking us through the initial pitch documents and internal storyboards, series proposals and other accompanying internal documentation between writers and broadcasting/production houses.

ANIMATION WORKSHOP

Sophie Williamson recently visited the course to lead a stop-motion animation workshop ahead of the end of the term Within the session, Sophie imparted knowledge she had collected from her training and personal practice. Our producers gained key knowledge of the stop-motion animation industry along with behind-the-scenes examples of projects from Sophie's productions and large-scale productions like that of leading stop-motion production company Aardman Animations (responsible for Wallace and Gromit!).

Our Creative Producers then had the chance to learn and make their own wireframe puppets and claymation characters to animate during the session Sophie showed them the editing required for Premier Pro to help bring these animations to life

By the end of the session, each of our producers had a short film or sequence to be proud of - and plenty of new skills too!

DA VINCI DIDN'T DIE FOR THIS

THE FIRST ORIGINAL PLAY BY THE E15 CREATIVE PRODUCERS

"It was just joyous, a real laugh from beginning to end." - Anita Parry

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

During their final term, the third year cohort developed an original play and premiered the production at the Clifftown Theatre on campus

They did this as an alternative project for their 'Events and Management' module, which usually consists of students hosting a live event, with previous years having created a festival of arts and culture along the Southend Seafront. Our third years realised that their strengths in writing, producing, technical theatre (and film) and marketing meant that they could band together and function as a production company. They used their initiative to build on their lack of applied theatre experience that came as a result of the lockdowns within the first year of their degree. This production is the only example of cross-course casting to have ever happened on the East 15 campus Many actors also commented on how lovely it was to finally have a chance to work with those from other courses

The show was incredibly well-received and had completely sold out after only five days! There was an electrifying buzz within our live audience the night of the show, and many commented on how much they had enjoyed the performance

THE SHOW

'Da Vinci Didn't Die For This' is a riotous modernday romp packed full of slapstick silliness.

Three groups of unruly characters hunt their way through a gallery after hours Statues fall and paintings rip in this brand-new physical comedy written by our classmate Libby Viccars and produced by us third-year East 15 Creative Producing students The play follows three different storylines that intertwine The final scenes see the separate storylines combine into one big chaotic explosion

THE DOCUMENTRY

Alongside the development of the production, our producers created a behind-thescenes documentary showcasing the work completed to bring this project to life.
