Advice from first year students: n

See as many shows/pieces of theatre as you can – and watch the shows put on by all of the East 15 courses

Visit Southend: www.visitsouthend. co.uk Southend-on-Sea Borough Council: www.southend.gov.uk/visitors

n

Use the library, it’s massive!

Idea 13: http://idea13.org/thecalendar/

n

If you’re an international student, get a bank account set up early

WiFi access

n

Save going out until the weekend… You won’t have enough energy the next day if you’ve been partying the night before

n

Get a student railcard and an NUS extra card – they’ll save you loads of money!

n

Keep an actor’s journal – write down things you’ll need to remember to improve your skills

“10 different classes each week!” “Every two weeks we have ‘Theatre Café’ – an opportunity to take risks without being graded. It really helps hone your work.” “Don’t be worried about singing classes if you can’t sing – the teachers are really nice and help you and everyone is really supportive.”

More about the local area The town of Southend-on-Sea and the surrounding area has a great deal to offer and you can find out more about the facilities and attractions from the following websites:

NOTES

HANDY TIPS

A student’s view

You can get free Wi-Fi on campus by connecting to Eduroam with your Essex email address and password. Go to: www.essex.ac.uk/it/eduroam. In University accommodation internet access is provided by StudentCom. Finding your way around As with any new environment, it might take you a little while to get your bearings, but don’t worry! Note that inside University buildings, room numbers beginning with GB are in The Gateway Building, and room numbers beginning with TF are in The Forum. The first number denotes the floor – so TF.2.15 is located on the second floor of The Forum (room 15). Information for students aged under 18 at the start of your course If you’re under 18, you must arrive on time and attend all your compulsory Welcome events. There will be opportunities for you to ask any questions you have, and to meet relevant staff in your department. You’ll be given important information about your time at Essex. If you’re unsure about which events to go to please email: supportsc@essex.ac.uk
