HANDY TIPS
A student’s view
More about the local area
Advice from first years:
The town of Southend-on-Sea and the surrounding area has a great deal to offer and you can find out more about the facilities and attractions from the following websites:
n
Check your emails!
Visit Southend: www.visitsouthend.co.uk
n
Keep an eye on your deadlines
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council: www.southend.gov.uk/visitors
n
Take full advantage of the expertise of your tutors – don’t be afraid to approach them for advice
Idea 13: http://idea13.org/the-calendar/
n
Immerse yourself in a hobby or socialise to help you switch off
Nursing students n
Keep on top of Biosciences!
n
Placements are hard work, but very rewarding
n
Always submit your draft essays to receive really useful feedback “There seems an awful lot to learn, but things begin to fall into place. Professionalism, self-discipline and planning are important. But there’s time to have fun too.” “When you know you have made a difference to a patient, it makes you feel really good.” “Moodle is a mine of information! Delve into it and you’ll be amazed what you find!”
Social Work students n
Don’t worry about the role-plays or being videoed in interpersonal skills - it really helps getting lots of feedback and after a while you sort of forget about the cameras
n
In placements you’ll meet loads of new people and do things like make appointments to visit service users…it might be a bit difficult to start with and you might mess up a couple of times. Eventually it will get a lot better…you’ll wish you asked for a bit of help sooner!
n
Get out into Southend as much as you can and have a good look around. You’ll need to know it for the course as well as to have a good time.
n
Get into the habit of reading right from the start…newspapers, blogs, novels, everything - not just text books or the stuff we have to read! It makes it much easier to do the written work and have things to talk about in class.
Download our Pocket Essex app and stay up to date with all the latest news and events happening on campus. You can also visit our What’s on guide at: www.essex.ac.uk/events/
Wi-Fi access You can get free Wi-Fi on campus by connecting to Eduroam with your Essex email address and password. Go to: www.essex.ac.uk/it/eduroam. In University accommodation internet access is provided by StudentCom. Finding your way around As with any new environment, it might take you a little while to get your bearings, but don’t worry! Note that inside University buildings, room numbers beginning with GB are in The Gateway Building, and room numbers beginning with TF are in The Forum. The first number denotes the floor – so TF.2.15 is located on the second floor of The Forum (room 15). For an app that maps out all the rooms around campus, search online for FindYourWay@Essex Information for students aged under 18 at the start of your course If you’re under 18, you must arrive on time and attend all your compulsory Welcome events. There will be opportunities for you to ask any questions you have, and to meet relevant staff in your department. You’ll be given important information about your time at Essex. If you’re unsure about which events to go to please email: support-sc@essex.ac.uk.
