The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years. Audrey Hepburn

How does Miss Malta celebrate beauty? Miss Malta celebrates beauty in several ways, but focuses more on the aspect of personality. Miss Malta’s directors train their contestants to gain self confidence, providing them with the opportunity to invest in themselves and succeed in their future career. The motto of this contest encompasses how when one has inner beauty, one can radiate beauty externally. What do you feel are the key ingredients to be crowned Miss Malta? Miss Malta’s beauty queen is not only about the appearance of the model, but much rather about having what we call, the ‘full package’ . By this we mean to focus on the winner’s personality and how she presents herself to the public. An inviting smile, poised posture, healthy physique and good fashion sense are also highly important for our winning contestant. We consider reliability to be a great necessity, as this is a factor which will affect numerous events and occasions for the winner herself who must be grateful towards our team and sponsors. How do you feel Miss Malta has evolved over the past years? Miss Malta started way back in 1963 by its founders Marget and George Gatt. Introducing such a prestigious beauty pageant proved to be quite a challenge back in the day, especially since in Malta we had never experienced such a quality pageant. In a period during which wearing revealing clothing, particularly swimwear, was considered to be a taboo, the biggest challenge which our founders had to overcome was getting their contestants to model in bathing suits. As years went by, the pageant evolved in synch with the ever-changing Maltese mentality, with more individuals admiring the uniqueness of this pageant. During the early years of the pageant, the top 3 winners who were crowned during Miss Malta, Miss Republic of Malta and Miss Tourism of Malta all competed internationally. Such a procedure stopped around 10 years ago. As of this year, Miss Malta is being managed by two new directors Kersten Borg and Jeanette Bezzina who have re-introduced this aspect of hosting the top 3 winners internationally.

Miss Malta has evolved gradually but as of this year, the directors aimed even higher and sought to work day and night to deliver such a prestigious contest onto the higher platform it deserves. In what way do you seek to usher Miss Malta into the modern era? As from the directors’ point of view, Miss Malta is evolving around the modern era to keep the pageant’s quality high and engaging to its entire audience. The goal is to broaden viewers of this platform not only to beauty pageant audiences but to the entire family. How do you manage to find the right balance between Miss Malta’s rich history and its objectives for the future? We aim to maintain Miss Malta’s traditions while intertwining a twist to the modern era, so lets say we have introduced the opening dress combining the Maltese flag and the medieval aspect but one must also appreciate how this garment is fully handmade and beaded with a highly fashionable result. The style of the dress in mention was designed by us and we shall see how the same dress’ shilouette will be in style during the 2021 season What should we expect at this year’s Miss Malta? We can say one word - A SPECTACULAR SHOW - but let’s delve in further. After several intense brainstorming sessions, meetings and endless hours of work, we came up with a concept which aims to attract a broad audience by having the opening show which features a medieval concept, the swimwear round having elements from Malta’s rich culture, the elegance round showcasing high calibral dresses, three fashion shows all with a different theme and a hair show featuring elements from the local Maltese feast. The night will also kick off with a red carpet moment which has never been seen in the history of beauty pageants. With this being said, we truly hope that anyone attending the show will have an unforgettable experience!

TARYN

Mamo Cefai: What does it feel like presenting this years Miss Malta Gala Final? Presenting Miss Malta 2020 is a true honour, not only because of the prestige it carries but also because it’s Miss Malta’s first year in the capable hands of Kersten Borg and Jeanette Bezzina who are both extremely dedicated in making the whole event a night to remember. Any butterflies before taking the stage? Butterflies are inevitable but I’m lucky enough to be hosting it with one of my greatest friends, Owen so it will definitely be fun! Any good luck superstitions before you take the stage? I’m not a superstitious person but one thing that definitely uplifts me before a show are those good luck messages from family and friends. It’s always good to start the show with a smile. What does beauty mean to you? Beauty is more than just aesthetics and that’s something that we’ve tried to continuously stress throughout the preparation process with the theme of Female Empowerment. Beauty has no shape or size, beauty is all about being confident, being kind and being true to yourself.

Representing Malta is a responsibility but also an unforgettable experience of a lifetime.

ULIA JFarrugia Portelli Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Just a few weeks ago, I was invited to speak at an event organised by the Malta Tourism Authority in which, together with my Ministry and the various stakeholders who collectively form the tourism industry in Malta and Gozo, we celebrated the outstanding results achieved in 2019. Being the final year of a decade, we also took some time to look at how the sector performed over the past 10 years, which were characterised by a steady and sustained growth. There was plenty to be pleased about, and not just by the annual arrivals figure of 2.75 million visitors. The increase of more than 1 million tourists in the last 5 years, a doubling of income from tourism to reach 2.2 billion Euro, the rapid growth in tourist arrivals from so-called secondary markets, and a much improved seasonal pattern - which means that our destination is managing to attract more tourists in the winter months, whilst consolidating numbers in the peak summer months. All of this is good news for Malta’s tourism industry. Much more importantly, however, is the successful repositioning of the image of our

Islands with the prospective traveller from Europe and beyond. Out there, Malta is being perceived differently than how it was viewed just a few years back. And as a result of this change in perception, the profile of our visitors is also changing. This is a success story in its own right, as important as the numerical achievements of the past decade. The repositioning exercise that Malta has managed to carry out has reached a point where we are now attracting more and more tourists of a much younger age. Year after year, we are seeing a sustained growth in the share of tourists in the age groups under 45 years of age -- the type who make their own independent travel arrangements, explore the destination in search of the authentic experience, are inquisitive, love good food, enjoy events and also engage in soft adventure activities. The primary factors that have made this possible include the major improvement in flight connectivity, a segment-driven marketing strategy and a huge investment in year-round high caliber events. In the years to come, these experiential, adventurous, climate-conscious tourists will be seeking a more and more enriching, authentic holiday experience. Our task, and our challenge, is to make sure we are ready to provide what they are looking for.

Reaching out to the most vulnerable in our society Rosianne Cutajar Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms

A TELIER One of the major responsibilities entrusted to the Parliamentary Secretariat for Equality and Reforms last January is the reform on human trafficking. The Government’s electoral programme promised a discussion on such a sensitive topic in order to improve the level of protection of vulnerable persons at risk of exploitation. The aim of these discussions is to come up with up to date solutions to prevent the occurrence of trafficking and protect those members of society who face the greatest risk of being exploited. Human trafficking is recognised at the international level as a lucrative criminal activity built upon the exploitation of human beings, mainly in sex, labour and servitude. Three specific Sustainable Development Goals addresses human trafficking through the promotion of decent work, higher rates of conviction and gender equality. Women represent the vast majority of victims of human trafficking worldwide, whereby women and girls make up 99% of victims in the global sex industry. Following a very interesting consultation period in 2019, the Government is now in the drafting stage of a completely overhauled approach towards human trafficking. The Government is determined to put in place a robust approach towards human trafficking which reflects the modern-

day features of this international plague. I believe that the country’s strategy should be based on the following three principles. First we should maintain a set of predefined rights for potential victims of human trafficking. Society must send out the message that there is help available to victims. We are analysing the obstacles which discourage a person from seeking help and working on solutions to eliminate these barriers. Our message should come across loud and clear; anyone trampling on the rights of vulnerable persons must face harsh consequences. My second priority is to ensure that we have the capacity to investigate human trafficking, bring perpetrators to justice and secure convictions. Last but not least, we believe that education is the most important instrument to fight human trafficking. Last year the Government launched the Human, Like You campaign as its main awareness platform. Awareness-raising is considered as one of the key components of an effective anti-trafficking strategy. The reform has now entered in its last and most crucial stage. In the months to come we shall be going back to the public with our plans. This reform is long overdue and this administration is resolute in finally taking this fight for the human rights of all to the next level.
