Welcome Letter George Burns famously once said, “Look to the future, because

that is where you’ll spend the rest of your life.” Here at Union Station our look into the future affords a rather marvelous view. In fact, as we break new ground with our Western Expansion project, the horizon seems limitless . . . filled with rich memory, diverse meaning and shared motivation to reach for the next grand goal. At the same time, our future is a direct reflection of what you’ve always found important about Union Station. It’s been you, your family and our fans across the entire country who have helped bring Kansas City’s historic home to today’s state of strength and vibrancy. Your visits and voices have made and continue to make profound differences. Inside this edition of ON TRACK, you will see dramatic evidence of success in 2015 and tremendous enthusiasm for 2016 and beyond. Read about record results for our world-class Science Center, Planetarium and Extreme Screen Theatre. Take pride—along with us—at a new record number of Union Station Member families. And let’s not forget how we ALL made history celebrating science, community, professional football and Royals World Series Baseball right here on Kansas City’s front porch. It truly was a record-breaking and unforgettable year. A few highlights include: • Science City internationally recognized and awarded for top “Visitor Experience” • Annual Science City attendance sets record growth of 23% over 2014 • Science City Summer Campers set new record enrollment • 5th Annual Maker Faire sets records with 400 Makers and more than 17,000 guests • Record Celebration of Royals World Series win inside and outside Union Station

Acclaimed opening of new permanent history exhibit – “Shoe Shiners” • New Business Membership Program launched and embraced • Record number of Individual and Family Memberships purchased • Voted “Best Family Outing and Venue” by Ingram’s Magazine • Voted “Favorite Indoor Family Destination” by KC Parent Magazine • Western Expansion project funding success nears goal with wide community support The list literally goes on and on . . . So one final point before you turn these pages and celebrate what we—including you—have accomplished. We know from where we’ve come. We feel the responsibility to continue returning lasting results. And we treasure the privilege of being both caretakers and dream makers for Union Station . . . a place that proves what Kansas City can do when enthusiasm, determination, innovation and focused efforts intersect. This is YOUR Union Station, Kansas City. This is your monument. Join us in creating new memories as we look toward tomorrow with great pride and satisfaction. We are, indeed, moving to the future!

Escape Room KC Brings New Layer of Mystery to Union Station The door shuts behind you, just as expected. You and your group

are now locked inside one of the brilliantly-themed rooms. With nothing but your problem solving skills and teamwork to get out, you have only 60 minutes and the “key” is buried beneath layer upon layer of mystery and riddle. Good luck! Welcome to the Escape Room at Union Station, opening this spring. Hard to describe, but easily one of the most fun experiences around, the Escape Room is an interactive team challenge requiring all of your fully-alert senses. It’s the thrill of discovery with the mystery of a puzzle that resists being solved. It’s the latest destination to be added to Union Station’s one-of-a-kind attraction lineup and it’s set to impress the best and thrill everyone who’s up for a mind-bending challenge. “Due to the success and overwhelming demand at our River Market location, an additional venue was a must,” Jason Mendez, owner, Escape Room Kansas City, said. “We selected Union Station because we wanted the location to be as exciting as the Escape Room experience. We’re thrilled to share this unique entertainment experience with the thousands of guests who visit the historic depot daily. If you’ve visited us before, just wait until you see what we have in store for you!” Unlike the Escape Room – River Market location featuring the “classic” rooms, Escape Room KC – Union Station will feature four totally new rooms and promises to be the largest, most high-tech and mind-bending in the country. “We’ve used cutting edge technology to ensure guests an adventure of a lifetime,” Alex Doroskovs, owner, said. “From Sherlock Holmes to the Da Vinci Code and more, this will be unlike anything you’ve seen in the Midwest.”

Plan to spend 1 ½ hours total once you arrive, including the 60 minutes you have as a team to solve a series of puzzles, find clues, codes, open locks, safes and secret passages to ultimately escape from the room.

“It’s the most stimulating and memorable way to spend an hour with your family, friends or co-workers. Make plans to stop by. You will not be disappointed,” Mendez said. With nearly 200 corporate events at the Station annually, the Escape Room is a great team building activity that can be added to meeting agendas. Companies can book Union Station conference rooms, have food catered and enjoy team building exercises all under one roof. “Union Station is excited to add yet another one-of-a-kind attraction to our already stellar line-up,” Jerry Baber, Executive Vice President and COO of Union Station, said. “The Escape Room offers a unique and wildly-popular activity for our business group guests. We were already recognized as a top meeting and banquet facility in Kansas City. This new option will be one more validation of that recognition.” Escape Room KC – Union Station is scheduled to open during the spring of 2016 on B Level near the new Union Station Ticket Center and Theatre District. HOLIDAYS 2015

The magic of the Holidays at Union Station once again translated into record numbers of guests. As you made Union Station part of your family traditions, we celebrated with you in spectacular style. Here are a few examples of that success:

Nov. 21st Bank Midwest Holiday Kickoff Event featuring Quixotic: Over 5,000 of you attended and were treated to a visual feast as the breathtaking performance unfolded. Only 5 short years ago, our Holiday Kickoff gathered with less than a few hundred guests.

Kansas City Southern Holiday Express Train Weekend: A record 28,000 of you answered the “All Aboard” call to step inside “Rudy” and enjoy the magic of authentic rail cars decorated from floor to ceiling in Holiday splendor. That was a 27% increase in guests over 2014. Of course, just prior to boarding, you also visited Santa and Mrs. Clause and perhaps caught a bit of live Holiday music and dance from our main performance stage.

New Year’s Eve: A sell-out gathering of 1,500 rang in the new year with us in 2015. The beauty of the Station, the glamour of your attire and the swingin’ sounds of the Dave Stephens Band mixed to create an evening for the record books.

SCIENCE CITY SPARKS RECORD ENGAGEMENT 2015 2014 2012

2013

Kansas City’s Science Center Science City

23%

Kansas City kids (and parents) love the science center. With so much new to see and do, attendance grew by an impressive 23% in 2015 and 50% overall since 2012.

Union Station’s promise to bring a world-class science center to the Kansas City area has been realized and now validated by the top science and technology center authorities across the international landscape. More new, hands-on exhibits. More one-of-a-kind interactive experiences. More educator-led programming to engage young (and older) minds. In 2015, Science City’s growth in offerings and attendance continued and our long-term strategic plan turned another successful page. Take a look at just a few areas of impact achieved in 2015: Science City On The Road and GSK Science in the Summer Programs: Over 10,000 youth were reached thru 140 programs in 2015 as Science City hit the road to meet children where they were. We love welcoming visitors to our science center at Union Station and we also count it a privilege to travel the metro area with our passion for educating and inspiring young minds. We delivered Stage shows, Make & Take Activities, Mobile Discovery Areas, GSK Science in the Summer Chemistry Curriculum and more. “Hitting the Road” was once again a call to action for us in 2015 and we’re already logging miles and creating science-minded memories in 2016! Jackson County Scholarship Grant: Thru a unique partnership with Jackson County, Science City in 2015 reached more than 9,500 students whom otherwise may not have had the opportunity to experience the remarkable benefits of our hands-on science encounters. Teachers were invited to apply for these scholarships on behalf of their classrooms. Primarily focused

on underserved populations in Jackson County, this program opened new eyes, expanded new minds and perhaps paved the way for an entirely new group of future scientists. That’s the kind of success we love to deliver. Thank you, Jackson County for continuing to invest in our youth! S.T.E.A.M. Team: Big science loves big personalities, and our STEAM Team demonstrated both as they launched their outreach in 2015. Featured on FOX 4 TV the second and fourth Saturday mornings of each month, our STEAM Team introduced in-home science fun to tens of thousands of eager learners. Topics ranged from circuits, air pressure in space and catapults in action. Additionally, the Team made appearances at special events and festivals right here at Union Station. There’s no stopping our lab coat super heroes as they share their love for all things science! Summer Camp: Children ages 6-12 turned out in record numbers during 2015 for Science City’s wildly popular Summer Camp. Offered over a full 9 weeks (in one-week themed sessions), nearly 800 young minds were engaged in the FUN of learning, laughing and living in our world of science exploration. And what a tremendous affirmation it is to see so many familiar faces year-after-year. Members enjoy early enrollment and substantial discounts. Sign your child up now, as spots fill fast! Signature Community Events: Can FUN, LEARNING and CELEBRATION happen all at once? You bet! Just consider the success and anticipation our Signature Events created in 2015. Easter Eggstravaganza, Spookfest, kidFEST and Noon Year’s Eve all amazed and entertained our youngest and oldest guests alike. These themed destination days drew record attendance—an increase of 52% over 2014—and caused many a parent to rejoice that Kansas City’s success story (Science City) took the lead and remade annual seasonal occurrences into much-anticipated special events for the whole family!

MEMBERS MAKE A SUBSTANTIAL DIFFERENCE Union Station once again enjoyed a record number of Members in 2015. In fact, we ended the year with the largest increase in new Members in our history. Why is that important? Members represent that strong vote of confidence that we are focused on the right combination of product, service and price. Membership continues to deliver exceptional value and the numbers for us and for you prove it.

A Visionary Leader . . .

Meet the Board

Best Wishes, Lee A. Derrough!

After more than 10 years on

our Board of Directors, Union Station Board Vice Chairman Lee A. Derrough says the time has come to pass the torch. “My experience on the Union Station Board has been gratifying and rewarding. Much has been accomplished during my tenure and I’m pleased I could play a small role,” said Derrough. Lee was recommended to the Union Station Board by former Chairman and current member Michael “Mike” R. Haverty and then elected in February 2005. The two agree the start of Derrough’s involvement is a moment they’ll never forget. “I asked Lee to join because we needed an outspoken community leader who would help during challenging times,”said Haverty. “Lee’s contribution to the Station has been significant and varied. We have relied on his real estate expertise to guide us through a number of projects,” said Bob Regnier, Board Chairman. “His experience has been essential in structuring and analyzing many alternatives. Lee also brought to the Station a wealth of experience in operations and marketing.” Derrough admits he looks forward to dedicating more time to personal endeavors but will forever call Union Station home and the Union Station Board, Management, Staff and Volunteers—family. “Lee has been invaluable to Union Station and our remarkable transition into a thriving Kansas City destination,” George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station, said. “Lee’s skills and passion have made a lasting and dramatic impact on our self-sustaining success. We owe Lee our deepest gratitude and wish him the very best.”

Breaking New Ground

Union Station is Expanding West After years of planning and great anticipation, the $7.5 million

Union Station Western Expansion has begun—the largest enhancement project since the Station’s massive 1999 renovation that restored the historic monument to its former glory. Crews from Burns & McDonnell broke ground in early January. The first phase to be completed will include a new vehicular and pedestrian bridge that will span from the southwest corner facing Grand Blvd. (Carriage Pavilion) of the Station into the 3rd level of the existing West Yards Parking Garage. “Plans on paper are now taking physical shape,” George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station, said. “To witness yet another milestone moment in Union Station’s history is both humbling and exciting. Our guests will see and feel remarkable differences and appreciate the care we took to greatly enhance their Union Station experience.” To date, Phase One is on schedule. Construction safety fencing has been placed between the Planetarium and West Yards Parking Garage,

prompting the temporary closure of access to OK Street from the Broadway side. Crews are installing bridge piers and columns, precast garage spandrel infill, a bridge deck, drainage and piping, electrical, and more. And while it’s a hard-hat operation outside, it is business as usual inside the Station. “Customer experience is always our first priority, so we’ve taken every measure possible to ensure visitors feel virtually no disruptions during construction,” Jerry Baber, Executive Vice President and COO of Union Station, said. “Short-term parking remains available in front of the Station and entrances to our primary West Yards Parking Garage remain unaffected. Whether you visit the Station for a trip to Science City, a special event or festival, or a private celebration, you will find access remains convenient.” The Western Expansion will also offer improvements to our key attractions. A new ticketing office and welcome area with electronic kiosks as well as a designated parking-level entrance to Science City with portal access to the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium and the Regnier UnionStation.org

11

Extreme Screen Theatre will soon begin to take shape. A new 47,000 sq. ft. outdoor North Plaza festival and event area will transform current space immediately to the west of the Science Center. That area will also include approximately 12,000 sq. ft. for Science City’s new “Not-So-Simple Simple Machines Exhibit” slated to open in spring 2017 and an outcome of the Burns & McDonnell Battle of the Brains’ competition. But the project doesn’t stop there. Also included will be a transformed streetscape and garden areas welcoming visitors to the historic Station along the South and East sides. And a state-of-the-art entrepreneurial conference center will grow our available meeting space. “The Western Expansion will increase both the beauty and functionality of Union Station,” Guastello said. “We have taken extraordinary efforts to maintain the integrity, architecture and history of the Station as we evolve to serve Kansas City for the next 100 years. Of course, we would not be able to write this next chapter without the tremendous support of the Missouri Development Finance Board, Arvin Gottlieb Charitable Foundation, Bloch Family Foundation, Burns & McDonnell, City of Kansas City, MO, Goppert Family Foundation, Hall Family Foundation, Gary Dickinson Family Foundation, Schutte Foundation, Royals Charities, Rainen Family Foundation and others.” As of March 15, 2016

LAMP POST CLOCK WILL ONCE AGAIN WELCOME STATION GUESTS

Above: Western Expansion Project. Courtesy: Roy Inman Photographs©

On January 8, 2015, mother nature took her toll on the outer cast casing of the historic lamp post clock located on the front sidewalk of Union Station. Bitterly cold temperatures, wind and time all contributed to the iconic structure coming apart. On that day, the upper section fell to the ground, breaking into multiple pieces. The clock was originally constructed in the 1880’s by the E Howard Clock Company. By the mid 1880’s it sat at the corner of 10th and Main. In 1918, when the Mace Jewelers acquired the clock, it was moved to 11th and Grand. Then in 1936 the clock was moved to the front of Union Station. In 1999, the clock was named in honor of Barnett and Shirley Helzberg for their major donation to help fund the massive restoration of Union Station. In time for the reopening of the Station, the outer clock casting was also refurbished and the badly-deteriorated inner mechanism was replaced with modern movements. The lamp post clock-face was once again illuminated, welcoming guests to the Station along the front sidewalk. And there it stood for 15 years. “When the lamp post clock was damaged in early 2015, there was never a question about our desire to restore it as a piece of Kansas City and Union Station history,” George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station, said. “With plans underway for our new streetscape to the south of the Station—part of the larger Western Expansion project—we knew we had a perfect chance to restore and relocate the clock to a more prominent location for all guests to enjoy. The funds needed for the restoration recently came from a successful longtime Kansas City entrepreneur, real estate developer and friend of the Station, Mike Rainen. Kathy and Mike’s gift of $50,000 and personal challenge to all of Kansas City represent the spirit of determination that originally built Union Station.” “The Rainen Family Foundation is honored to help restore the historic lamp post clock,” Mike Rainen said. “Union Station is more than a building, it’s a remarkable combination of individual elements, memories and family moments for Kansas Citians. For nearly 80 years, guests—including Kathy’s and my own parents and grandparents—were greeted by the lamp post clock. They oriented themselves to time and place by its function and beauty. The chance to help restore it to its original splendor is a pure delight. Now, I challenge others who love Kansas City and Union Station history to commit support to the ambitious Western Expansion project. It will be moving to see the clock keeping time once again and welcoming us all to Kansas City’s grand monument.” The historic heart of the original clock—it’s 1880’s mechanism—was restored by The Clock Shop of Kansas City separate from the outer pedestal and is currently on display, in working order, just inside the entrance to Science City. In late February, the shattered pieces of the outer casting we’re packaged and shipped to Medfield, MA, where the clock is being restored. Current plans are to erect the clock in its new location—along Pershing Road—this summer. Contributions to the Western Expansion project, regardless of size, are welcome and can be made online at unionstation.org/westernexpansion. UnionStation.org

History Unfolds As “Shiners” Story Is Told I

t would seem—over the last century—in every corner of the massive Union Station, Kansas City history happened. Worn steps, hidden autographs, and hand-crafted elements of architecture point to that history. From the mundane to the sensational, life happened here and is now celebrated in several world-class and award-winning exhibits open daily and always free to experience. That history continues to unfold as new elements are added to these exhibits. Most recently—in the northwest elevator lobby of Grand Hall—the Shoe Shiners story came to life in a dramatic and poignant fashion. In the golden years of rail, a man’s status (civilian and soldier) could be measured by the shine on his shoes. Since many travelers were headed to important destinations, Station shoeshine services were in high demand and shine stands would buzz with activity. Consequently, from the time Union Station opened, many enterprising African-American boys and men turned shoe shining into a profitable business. A master shiner could earn up to $200 a day. “The excitement to me was all the people who would come to Union Station,” Sonny Gibson, a shiner in his early years, said. Gibson made 10 cents a polish, approximately $10 a day with tips included. Henry Lyons, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Olathe, said “bootblacks” knew just about everything and everybody.

“Politicians. Gangsters. People coming into town wanting to know where the action was in Kansas City,” said Lyons. “The shoe shine guys could tell them.”

Above: Shoe Shiner Exhibition Unveiling. Courtesy: Roy Inman Photographs©

“They had nicknames like Cobra and The Magician,” Michael Tritt, Chief Marketing Officer at Union Station, said. “They practiced their trade and grew their business on these two worn marble risers . . . in a small corner of our historic monument. Now we have the privilege of telling their story and keeping their remarkable successes alive for others to enjoy.” With the help of Henry Lyons and historian Joelouis Mattox, Union Station unveiled the Shoe Shiners exhibit in 2015 to commemorate the rich history of these early entrepreneurs. It marks the first addition to the permanent Union Station Stories history exhibit since its opening during the Station’s Centennial Celebration of 2014. “Union Station is not only a place to celebrate history, it’s a place to tell the rich story of Kansas City’s diverse culture,” Bob Regnier, Board Chairman of Union Station, said. “With the help of Henry Lyons and historian Joelouis Mattox, we are able to tell another terrific and important story of commerce and ambition that developed right here in these historic halls,” George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station, said. “The Shiners carved out a thriving enterprise and became examples of resourcefulness and success at Union Station.” Union Station Stories is free and open to the public and is located primarily on the second, third and fourth floors of Grand Hall, along the south-facing exterior wall.

Da Vinci: The Exhibition

Taking Guests Beyond the Mona Lisa M

ore than 60,000 local and regional guests have been fascinated by Da Vinci: The Exhibition since it opened in Union Station’s Bank of America Gallery on October 23, 2015. This hands-on exhibition about Leonardo da Vinci, his art and inventions, has served to educate and inspire adults and children alike. For those whose base of knowledge of this Renaissance master went little beyond the Mona Lisa, the experience has left them feeling empowered and creatively refreshed.

“Amazing interactive displays. Take your time... it is fascinating. I’m going to go back a second time. Intellectually stimulating and inspiring. Don’t miss it!” Julie Moline, Blue Springs, MO For Union Station, this world-class touring exhibition is yet another in a long line of blockbuster educational experiences to grace our historic monument. Occupying nearly 15,000 sq. ft., Da Vinci: The Exhibition—Presented by Chase—showcases the breadth of work by da Vinci like no other exhibition. All of his major works are expertly recreated and displayed. Two of the most impressive pieces are brilliant re-creation studies of his most famous paintings, the Mona Lisa and Last Supper, which are presented at their actual size. We most often think of da Vinci as an artist, but journey through this exhibition and you will be amazed at the breadth of his work. Leonardo was a radiant thinker. From the arts to science there was no subject he couldn’t grasp. Engineering, science, anatomy, flight, hydraulics, music, and light among others caught the attention of this most celebrated visionary. True to his creative approach, this is an exhibition to be experienced, not just viewed. Unlike other exhibits where items are placed under glass, guests are encouraged to touch and interact with many of da Vinci’s inventions, such as the pulley and revolving crane, as well as the original design of the tank. To encourage your own creative abilities, special activation spaces have been added throughout the gallery. You will roll up your sleeves and plunge into the world of inventing by creating your own flying machine or tap into your artistic side by drawing your own Mona Lisa. There is even an opportunity to take a selfie posed as Mona Lisa! To add another dimension for those who would like to be fully immersed in the Da Vinci experience, a supplemental complimentary audio tour is also available. Not only has this exhibition fostered

creativity, but in one special case, romance. In that case, visitors to the exhibition witnessed a marriage proposal of a young couple who made visiting Union Station a part of their courtship. Da Vinci himself noted, “A life without love is no life at all.” In total, Da Vinci is on track to rank among the top 10 exhibits in Station history. One more important point . . . it wouldn’t be possible to bring world-class exhibitions like Da Vinci to your Union Station without the exceptional support of corporate and community sponsors. In every case, we simply can’t thank them enough. Da Vinci: The Exhibition is made possible by the Presenting Sponsorship of Chase and thru the generous support of Kansas City Industrial Council, Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, Kansas City Star, KCPT and Steel City Media.

“Union Station symbolizes the revitalization of the region and Chase is happy to help bring the Da Vinci exhibit to our community.” Nate Tesmer, Executive Director & Division Manager, Chase Commercial Banking

For a full list of Business Membership benefits, visit unionstation.org/business-membership. Due to its first-year success, this year’s membership levels have evolved to accommodate an even broader range of business types and sizes. “Union Station may be over 100 years old, but we continue to evolve to meet the needs of the community—including the business community,” Bob Regnier, Board Chairman of Union Station, said. “Our new Business Membership Program is a prime example. We saw a need for the program and then the need to adjust it to fit more companies falling between a small business and a large corporation. The benefits to a business are far-reaching and include community relations, marketing and philanthropic recognition.” Businesses, just like people, are known by the company they keep. Your association with Union Station will be recognized, celebrated and deliver valuable and ongoing benefits. And you and your associates will be in GREAT company! ABOVE: Roy Inman reflects on the historic moment when he captured the iconic rally image.

Capturing a “Sea of Blue” Moment in Kansas City’s History “Pretty good view,” that’s what Royal’s Head Coach Ned Yost

said as he peered out at the massive crowd gathered outside Union Station on November 3rd, 2015. The members of the World Series Championship Kansas City Royals were behind him, anxiously waiting for their opportunity to address their loyal fans. Little did they know there was one other fan racing around the Station looking for something just a little bit better than a “pretty good view.” That spectacularly sunny day, nearly 800,000 Royals fans filled the downtown streets of Kansas City for a celebration 30 years in the making. Union Station served not only as the gathering place, but also a breathtaking backdrop for a day that honored community, teamwork, determination and accomplishment. It was a day in Kansas City history not to be forgotten. To capture that jubilant frenzy and a moment in history, friends, families and even total strangers locked arms and posed for selfies or held their cameras and cell phones high above the crowd to capture moments like Jonny Gomes on stage

waving the American flag. Millions of photos were taken that day with Union Station standing tall and proud in the background. If you were here that day, you likely took a few pictures yourself. At that same time one man—who has dedicated part of his career to photographing Kansas City’s most iconic building—was busy snapping photos as well. By the end of his day, he captured an image that has captivated and astonished not only our community and the nation, but the world as well. It’s one of those rare photos that will remain an enduring image for generations. Amidst the revelry and chaos, Roy Inman, an award-winning photographer and treasured friend to Union Station, knew he needed to find “that” photo. And his gut told him where he needed to go to get it—the roof. Maneuvering through the crowd and the Station’s labyrinth of interior hallways and stairwells, he was on a mission. Once atop the roof and with the assistance of Station staff, he secured his camera around his neck and climbed a 12-step ladder that allowed

him to stretch barely beyond the front façade of the building. That precarious perch gave him an unfettered view of that Sea of Blue below that normally only the resident birds would witness. As is often the case, timing was everything. With fireworks poised to be launched from that same area, the roof was already being cleared as Roy reached the top of the ladder. As he braced himself and peered over the edge, the only words he could utter were, “Wow, wow, wow, holy cow!”

He had made the long journey and now he had less than two minutes to get his shots. “I’d never seen anything like it,” Inman said. “My jaw literally fell open. For a photographer, you immediately know when history is unfolding before your eyes. With the spectacle in front of me and firework cannons at my heels, instinct took over and I managed to fire off eight frames, panning right to left, then left to right. Then, it was off the ladder and off the roof ever more quickly.” Inman’s talents and expert timing that day combined to deliver the image of a lifetime. In fact, the panoramic view from atop Union Station is actually four images combined together to create the masterpiece. Within 24 hours, Union Station shared the image on social media and engagement went thru the roof. If you were on Facebook or Twitter the following day you likely saw it a hundred times if you saw it once. Royal’s fans immediately started asking how they could get a copy of the photo that will serve to remind them of a day and a feeling they never wanted to forget. Requests came not only from around the country, but from around the world. “I gave Roy a call and shared the excitement,” Michael Tritt, Chief Marketing Officer at Union Station, said. “We agreed to move ahead and put into motion a campaign that has yet to find its natural conclusion. This building, an enduring part of Kansas City history, gave a photographer whose instinct and skill are unparalleled, the opportunity to capture a view unlike any other. The result was stunning. Our first print run of 2,500 collectible posters sold out in less

than 48 hours. Needless to say, we went back on press for additional posters—again and again.” The placement of Union Station at the center of a community-wide celebration of such proportions can only be compared to the opening day of Union Station in 1914, when over 150,000 Kansas Citians gathered to celebrate. Images of that largestto-date KC gathering—over 100 years ago—have stood the test of time and remain visual cornerstones of our City’s grand history. On that day, Kansas City celebrated something many thought could not be accomplished; such a celebration was repeated on November 3rd, 2015. Inman had no idea what he would find when he made that long trek up to the roof of Union Station. It was that innate instinct that truly gifted photographers have—the ability to find a unique view that no one else would think to capture. After years of photographing this grand monument, that instinct paid off in a way he could never have imagined at a celebration this city dreamed of for 30 years. To each of you who purchased a Rally Poster, thank you. Part of your purchase went directly into the Union Station Preservation Fund to be used to keep this grand building maintained and thriving for the next 100 years. For those of you still desiring a print of “Sea of Blue,” it’s not too late. The collectible poster measures 12 x 36 inches and is available for purchase at the Union Station Box Office for $22. As you might imagine, sales are once again brisk as our “Boys in Blue” are back in uniform. Be sure your home is Royal Proud for the 2016 season by purchasing your copy at the Union Station Box Office or online at unionstation.org. GO ROYALS! Roy Inman, long-time friend and favorite photographer of Union Station also helped produce a book that commemorated the Station’s 100th Anniversary, “Union Station: Reflections After 100 Years.” This collectible book can be purchased at the Union Station Gift Shop for $29.99. Thank you Roy, for all you have done and all you continue to do for the Station.

Science Centers Matter!

Dynamic Science Centers Impact Communities Beyond the Classroom Each week more than 3,700 children, students, educators and

parents experience Science City’s new, hands-on entrance gallery as they make their way into a fascinating world that promotes exploration that—in turn—translates into countless dinner table discussions and increased appetites for learning and meaningful fun. You see, when children are exposed to non-traditional, creative learning opportunities—like those found in science centers—they fall in love with learning in unexpected ways. As well, hands-on science experiences also allow adults the opportunity to tap into universal curiosities. And when children and adults together discover answers to the myriad questions of how the world works—and why—that impact is amplified. Whether you’re learning about the principles of physics by harnessing into the Sky Bike and pedaling high above Science City or splashing around at the Every Last Drop exhibit to explore the interaction between Water & Life, a connection is formed between how science impacts everyday life and beyond. It’s the perfect example of how today’s science centers are no longer simply extensions of the school science classroom or geared exclusively toward science-minded children and students. Science Centers—for fortunate communities like Kansas City—have become essential components in the fabric of both education and economy. They serve to inspire early learners with the wonders of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in ways that tap into children’s natural curiosity. “For the young people of Kansas City, their future is now in our hands, but one day our destiny will be in their hands,” Jerry Baber, Executive Vice President and COO of Union Station, said. “STEM

(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) occupations are expected to grow at almost twice the rate of non-STEM occupations through and beyond 2018 and will pay more than many other careers. So kids who get science get better jobs, which fuels our collective economy. It’s really that direct and profound.” Simply put, Science Centers play an essential role in developing the next generation of workforce with STEM skills to meet the needs of our local, regional and national economy. Research has now lent quantifiable proof to that claim. Conducted at Oregon State University, the International Science Center Impact Study (ISCIS) surveyed over 13,000 individuals to better understand how experiences at science centers influenced adults’ and youth’s knowledge and understanding of science; interest in and engagement with science (in and out of school); likelihood of pursuing careers or hobbies related to science; creativity; and problem solving skills. Overall, the results strongly and consistently show—for both youth and adults—science center experiences positively correlated with science and technology-related outcomes. In particular, visiting a science center significantly correlated with increased: • science and technology knowledge and understanding, • science and technology interest and curiosity, • engagement with and interest in science as a school subject • engagement with science and technology-related activities outof-school, and • personal identity and confidence in science and technology.

The results show a strong and compelling case for the value of science centers as institutions and make the case for the global value of science centers. The impact even carries through to areas not as obvious. The study of science itself teaches children how to problem-solve, and to make informed decisions. Those are the types of minds we want directing Kansas City into the future. Science City is a great example of the way in which science centers act as liaisons between the science community and an increasingly diverse public. Ideally positioned to heighten awareness of critical issues like agriculture, energy, the environment, human health, and exploration as an overarching theme; Science City increases the understanding of—and exposure to—important and exciting new technologies and age-old foundational principles. Last fall, the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) honored Science City with a Leading Edge Award for Visitor Experience for its recent and successful transformation. Community validation has come in the form of increased attendance, reputation, revenue and visitor satisfaction. “The impact Science City has on our community is multi-faceted and enduring, like this grand building itself,” George Guastello, president and CEO of Union Station, said. “One hundred years ago, Union Station was erected as a feat of engineering and a testament to science, technology, engineering and math. Today, we are still on the leading edge as our world-class Science Center continues to distinguish itself and impact the future of our community.” And the list of local supporters and consumers of Science City continues to grow at an impressive rate. As businesses, foundations and individuals search for the highest-impact areas in which to invest their time and treasure, centers of life-long learning are increasingly favored. Investing in people and their potential produces an exponential return to not only the individual but the entire community. Making science matter makes huge sense . . . it’s proven!

“We know the student-inspired exhibits at Science City are absolutely changing perceptions about science. Kids are not only getting excited about STEM education – they’re pursuing STEM careers. And, STEM careers are a lifeline to innovation and economic development for our community,” said Greg Graves, Chairman and CEO, Burns & McDonnell. Sixteen years ago, Kansas City’s Science Center opened to acclaim. In the years that followed, millions of young minds have been shaped as our love of science has been shared. In the last three years, more than 50% of Science City has been completely reimagined and transformed. And, we’ve only just begun. As part of our Western Expansion, Science City is growing outdoors for the first time. More new exhibits. More hands-on fun. More deliberate investments to ensure you—our guests—have every advantage of what is acknowledged—on the world stage of peer institutions—to be an outstanding and award-winning science experience right here in Kansas City . . . right here at your Union Station.

The Heart of a Volunteer Nearly four years ago—at the age of 89—Harold Hall proudly

slipped on a Union Station volunteer vest for the very first time. After a 32-year career at VA Medical Centers and Army service during World War II, Hall had already revealed his volunteer heart hundreds of times. But he had more to give. By early January 2016, he had clocked nearly 1,800 volunteer hours at Union Station and become a well-known fixture to guests of all ages. “Harold had a pep in his step unlike any elder I’ve ever met,” Nale Uhl, Director of Finance and Customer Service of Union Station, said. “Even with a cane in tow, he stayed on his feet greeting Union Station guests with a smile from ear to ear and a fascinating story to share.” On January 19, Hall passed away unexpectedly. He did, however, leave behind a gift . . . an enduring reminder of the spirit of a Union Station volunteer—grace, charm, and genuine passion to care for others. “To know Harold was to love him. Within the first minute of meeting him, Harold drew you in with his personality, wit, and most notably—his energy,” Stacie Moody, Volunteer Coordinator of Union Station, said. “He was always in high spirits no matter how he felt or what was going on. It takes a village to help manage Union Station and without volunteers, it would be impossible to do. Making a weekly contribution of his time was a highlight for Harold—as it is for all of our volunteers—and in return, he gained the satisfaction of purpose and contribution. Harold made himself part of the Union Station family, and is now forever part of our powerful history.”

“Harold’s most joyous time was when he was at Union Station,” Mary Hall, Wife of Harold Hall, said. In 2015, 243 volunteers gave a total of 26,750 hours of their time to Union Station. Among those volunteers, 108 are over the age of 55. Research suggests that many seniors benefit tremendously by staying mentally active thru volunteerism. What we know for sure is Union Station—and organizations across our community—couldn’t deliver high-quality guest experiences without the wisdom, patience and dedication of these remarkable individuals. “As a retired high school educator, helping others is truly helping me. I wake up every day and feel privileged to come to the

24

Station,” Bill Sanderson, 64-year-old Union Station Volunteer, said. “I view volunteering as a job and absolutely love it! I have extremely bad arthritis in both knees and the constant movement has been a tremendous improvement—it’s my daily workout. It’s true what they say—feel younger, live younger.” April is “National Volunteer Month” and as we prepare to honor our tremendous family of volunteers, we also look forward to welcoming new members to the family! If you or someone you know is interested in volunteer opportunities at Union Station, go to unionstation.org/volunteers to gather more information and sign up. Union Station is indebted to our volunteers. We cherish you. You are the heart of the Station. As for Harold Hall and those who have left their legacies before him, we salute your service and honor your volunteer heart. You are among the finest and are forever part of our rich history.

Union Station had 243 volunteers in 2015 who gave roughly 26,750 hours of their time. Private Volunteer Appreciation Dinner: April 24, 2016 (Invites to come for those who have completed a minimum of 32 hours within the calendar year.)

The Haverty’s efforts to revitalize Union Station changed the landscape of Kansas City, and due to Mike and Marlys’s support, the Station is once again a focal point in a thriving Kansas City economy. The Haverty’s have been associated with Union Station since Mike joined the Board of Directors in 2001. In 2005, Mike took the helm as Union Station Board Chairman. For seven years, he successfully served in that leadership role. Mike continues to serve on the Board and has an active and influential voice in shaping the future of this most beloved Kansas City landmark and destination. In addition, Marlys and Mike worked tirelessly to support the Station’s 100th Anniversary. In 2014, they served as Honorary Centennial Gala Co-Chairs. The couple also generously support other community institutions and icons such as the Kansas City Irish Center, Benedictine College and Rockhurst University to name a few.

The Kansas City Chiefs—longtime friends to Union Station—are honored for the positive impact they make on our community thru philanthropy, programming and volunteerism. Thru the Hunt Family Foundation, the Chiefs provide $1.5 million in grants annually to over 85 area schools and nonprofits . . . including Union Station. Specifically via the Chiefs 50/50 Raffle, Union Station has enjoyed nearly $38,000 in direct support for Kansas City’s Science Center – Science City. The Kansas City Chiefs were also instrumental in bringing last summer’s touring exhibition, Gridiron Glory: The Best of the Pro Football Hall of Fame to Kansas City. Union Station flies the Chiefs flag proudly and joins all of Kansas City in saluting their organization for the positive impact they make across our community landscape.

Terry and Peggy Dunn have impacted countless organizations with a full resume of dedicated board service. For Peggy, that service includes Union Station Board Membership and Chair of Finance Committee, starting in 2005 and continuing today. Peggy’s history of public service (Mayor of Leawood, KS) and their combined volunteerism with the University of Missouri – Kansas City are just a few examples of the Dunn’s community involvement that has made the couple an inspiring model of civic service. In addition, JE Dunn was instrumental in the Station’s renovation project in 1999. The Dunn’s have set the standard for volunteerism across our community and Union Station has been and continues to be a grateful beneficiary of their sincere spirit of giving and leadership.
