UNISUS HOCKEY ACADEMY INNOVATIVE EDUCATION + HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETICS

THE UNISUS SCHOLAR ATHLETE PROGRAM The UNISUS Academic + Academy program combines innovative education with rigorous pursuit of a personal passion. Programs are designed to nurture students for success in the real world. Our tailored academic schedule meets the learning outcomes of the B.C. Ministry of Education and the International Baccalaureate Program (IB) while providing the freedom for students to pursue dedicated and rigorous training in a competitive sport. Academically, the IB program aims to do more than other curricula by developing a student’s ability to become life-long learners who are reflective, collaborative, caring, and motivated. As an IB World School, UNISUS offers IB programs beginning in Kindergarten with the Primary Years Program (PYP) and culminating with the academically rigorous IBDP for Grade 11 and 12 students. IB World School students develop strong academic, social, and emotional characteristics and they are also likely to perform better than students from other academic programs. Research has shown that IBDP graduates are better prepared for post-secondary education and are preferred by admissions offices at leading universities.

IB Learner Profile

UNISUS scholar-athlete program combines an IB education with a holistic and focused approach to sports for students who are pursuing sports to high performing or advanced levels. Studies have shown that students who participate in competitive athletics at school develop more essential skills that will have positive life-long benefits; furthermore, students who pursue an extra-curricular passion to high levels tend to perform better in academics. In addition to academic performance, these students also develop essential skills such as overcoming adversity, greater accountability, and unwavering dedication to achieving various goals and objectives.

UNISUS HOCKEY ACADEMY UNISUS Hockey Academy (UHA) combines a world-class International Baccalaureate (IB) education with a comprehensive and holistic approach to hockey skills enhancement. The program follows a key recommendation developed by Hockey Canada during the 1999 Molson Open Ice Summit to “Promote cooperative efforts between school boards, local hockey associations, and sponsors, to better utilize ice time and school facilities and move towards the development of sports schools.” The UHA is designed for students who are looking to excel in both academics and in hockey.

KEY BENEFITS OF THE PROGRAM

• Development opportunities for athletes of all age, gender, and background who aspire to excel in hockey. • On-ice training with a focus on developing an athlete’s individual technical and tactical skills. • Off-ice training that compliments on ice skills development by improving the athlete’s power, stamina, injury prevention, and overall health.

• Enhancement of the scholar-athlete’s academic achievements through seamless and balanced coordination between academics and athletics. UHA scholar-athletes will continue to compete with their local hockey association teams. The program’s vision is to be able to complement the club team system within the community by nurturing better-skilled hockey players while developing the scholar-athlete’s confidence to excel in both academics and athletics. The desired outcome is to enhance individual playing skills, self-esteem, and opportunities to pursue both academics and athletics beyond the primary and secondary school system.
