MISSION STATEMENT Emergence of development and sustainability throughout Pohara Marae especially for Ngati Koroki Kahukura will enhance value, economy and relationships within the Marae. Sustainable methods of development of Papakainga housing are to be applied and reinforced so that relationships within the ancestral home and the dwellers can be strengthen and unified.

Ko Maungatautari te Maunga, Ko Tainui te Waka, Ko Waikato te Awa, Ko Raukawa te Iwi, Ko Pohara te Marae, Ko Ngati Koroki Kahukura te Hapu

CONTEXT Pohara Marae is stituated in the Waikato region 30 minutes away from city of Hamilton. The landscape is surrounded by farmlands. Pohara Marae can be found in the western side of the Waikato River where they gathered eels for sustenance. Dwellers of Pohara Marae’s identity is distinguished by two significant land features which are the Waikato River and also Mangatautari. This can be seen towering their settlement, Guiding and nurturing everything around it.

WAIKATO. Waikato situated located in the North Island is the fourth largest region in New Zealand. The territory of Waikato amplifies from the Bombay Hills, Coromandel Peninsula and also the Mt Ruapehu. The Region of Waikato is also home to 30% of the nation’s wet lands and also dairy farming because of the vast array of gently rolling hills which are essential for development. The great Waikato River is also present in the region where dwellers harness the powers of the current and also a source of food and also transport. The Waikato River connects various amounts of sites thus being the longest body of inland water.

CLIENT Pohara Marae is the cornerstone of Ngati Koroki Kahukura. The aim of Ngati Koroki Kahukura is to sustain and preserve the land and all its value. They base all their ancestral connections here. My goal is to develop and design a Papakainga housing where extended whanau can live. Another goal is to develop community gardens where dwellers can plant their own crops and provide for the whanau and even sell crops.

ANALYSIS With the use of data extraction from GIS I have identified constraints and opportunities that could affect Pohara Marae. Analysis of the land assisted my project to strategically pinpoint locations where vegetation and buildings can be placed appropriately. My analysis consist of slope, aspect, contours, land cover, hydrology and Flow Directions.

SLOPE. Analysing the landscape is essential when establishing the perfect location for a site. Doing this successfully can create potential opportunities. This can inform the designers to distinguish the limits the site as well as finding suitable footings where development can be undergone. Slopes up to 15 degrees were considered as stable placements for development as anything above can be limiting to any kind of advancement. Placement of Papakainga is dependent on the slope of the land. Stable flat lands allow perfect footing for the houses. placements of the crops can also be determined by the slope. if the land is too steep vegetation would not grow.

ASPECT. The Aspect of the land determines the most appropriate location for development in terms of solar exposure. Being able to place features to maximise sunlight can enhance Pohara maraes development. An emergence of crops such as feijoas, grapes, pears and corn will flourish as sunlight is essential for its growth. Location of the new Papakainga housings is essential in terms of the position of the sun. sun creates warmth and also is valued in the culture of Maori.

TOPOGRAPHY. Pohara Marae is situated in the Waikato Region where it is known to have gently rolling hills mixed with wetlands. Pohara’s topography consist of gently rolling hills surrounded by towering hills where the site can be looked down on. There is also a decrease in the land where the river sits. The gently rolling hills creates perfect platforms to build on. Housing and crops are perfect in this environment. cattle farm also is perfect here as moisture in the ground can be filtered down allowing for less pugging. vegetation would easily grow here as low the land is relitively flat, fertile and consistant Pohara PÄ with moisture through out the whole site.

LANDCOVER. The vegetation present in and around Pohara tells the story and the identity of how the modern Ngati Koroki Kahukura came to be. this enable us to analyse and investigate how to manage the sites ecosystem and health. There are patches of various vegetation that can be utilised as land cover around Pohara Marae. These include indigenous forest Deciduous Hardwoods and also Manuka and Kanunka are present in the site. Concentration on riparian planting to improve the ecology of the nearby rivers.Riparian Planting would enhance the quality of th water and also bring life back into the streams. This may benefit Ngati Koroki Kahukura as the native habitats of eels can be restored.

Land Cover would benifit the exististing cattle farm. this would provide shade and area for cattle to be protected from the elements.

HYDROLOGY. Pohara Marae’s hydrology drives its mauri (life force) as food and sustenance is mostly deposited from the streams and rivers nearby. Pohara Marae is surrounded by a dense network of hydrology which is fed by the great Waikato River. Damaged Hydrology and human intervention within the outer reaches of the site affected the native eels to migrate away. These wild life played an essential role in the lives of the iwi that’s why restoring the streams. Creating riparian planting would bring a significant change in the landform as it would restore what was once there allowing Ngati Koroki Kahukura to enjoy what their ancestors had.

RIVER

FLOW ACCUMULATION. Understanding where the water travels in the site is essential in order to fix problems of water pollutions and also to understand where to plant vegetation so that they can grow efficiently. water flows towards the southern area of Pohara Marae where there is a strong concentration of vegetation. With the help of the Raiparian planting, polluted water from the stream is filtrated and clean as it flows through Pohara . Riparian Planting would also protect the stream from the runnof contaminats coming from the proposed dairy farming in the southern end of Pohara.

Mission Strategy To develop Emergence in Pohara Marae I have decided to design 3 stages that can be implemented in the site. 1. Infrastructure 2. Vegetation 3. Enhancement If done correctly the Pohara Marae will undergo Restoration and Rejuvenation if both of these factors are Reinforced

STAGE ONE: INFRASTRUCTURE. • • • • • •

New roads and pathways are designed throughout the whole site exposing every corner of Pohara for accessibility. The stream can now be accessed with the usage of boardwalks. Now Pohara’s inhabitants can interact with the stream without getting in to the water. Parking lots would be installed in the western side of the Marae that can accommodate up to 50 cars. Playgrounds are designed for the population of Pohara located behind the meeting house. The playground is strategically placed right in the center of the whole site so that it can be easily accessed. New Papakainga housing is designed on the right side of the entrance. The New Papakainga housing is a small housing unit capable of catering to a single family complete with toilets and bathrooms.

STAGE TWO: VEGETATION. • I have explored the vegetation within Pohara Marae where I have decided to design Riparian Planting. • Riparian Planting is a system where vegetation is planted in runoffs where moisture can be filtrated cleaning the water eg streams and rivers therefore enhancing the Pohara’s ecology. • The vegetation that I have considered in this processes consist of Harakeke, Wharariki, Oi oi and Carex Secta. • The chosen vegetation would be placed along the banks of Pohara’s Stream along with the existing Flora in the region • Enhancing the health of the stream maybe a significant key to restoring the once habitat of the eels.

STAGE THREE: ENHANCEMENT. • On our first project we took a look into maximising Pohara’s income and development and in this strategy I have taken it further. • Enhancement of Pohara Marae consists of special produce that can boost the Sites productivity and economy. • Crops such as Feijoas, Grapes, Pears and Corn would be planted near the entrance of the site where visitors could witness Pohara’s fruitful lands. • Dairy Farming would be developed on the southern end of Pohara across the stream where there are gently rolling hills. • Bee farming is also considered in my new development. Bees would help maintain its new Vegetation with its pollination. • Pohara Pā This would be especially useful for the Riparian Planting. • The final set of development is the plantation of apples present near the stream • All of these developments will help maximise productivity allowing sustainable living in Pohara Marae and the excess crops can be sold to boost the economy.
