Nicholson Reserve

A collabora)ve design project by Auckland Normal Intermediate & Unitec Landscape Architecture Students

1 The Site

The former Mt Eden Bowling Club green in the southern corner of Nicholson Park has been vacant for many years. The Albert Eden Local Board is now seeking ideas on how this space should be used.

2 The Brief •  To provide an interes)ng community use for the old bowling club area, as shown in the aIached photos and aerial image. •  To suggest uses and/or demoli)on of the exis)ng buildings on the site. •  Include walking paths around the site, connec)ng to exis)ng paths. •  Consider plan)ng areas, including trees for shade in summer. •  The site may be developed for either one par)cular use, or a number of different uses. •  Ligh)ng may be included as part of the design, but is unlikely to be built in the final design. Don’t rule it out though. •  Consider other ac)vi)es available in the park, and don’t double up on these. •  Consider poten)al vandalism and how this could be prevented.

3 Design Process

Design mentors from Unitec Landscape Preliminary Design Architecture work Ideas by Auckland with 4 student Normal Intermediate groups to refine and students develop design ideas

Feedback from Council and Auckland Normal intermediate students on preliminary design concepts

Design changes made and final concept designs developed based on feedback

Auckland Normal Intermediate students created a range of preliminary design concepts for the old bowling green part of Nicholson Reserve

Four groups of Auckland Normal Intermediate students then met with their design mentors – each group allocated a Unitec landscape architecture 3rd year student. A brainstorming workshop to develop ideas was held where design mentors worked with the groups to locate and iden)fy key features and concepts for the reserve using scaled base plans and park elements.

Four preliminary designs were taken away by the design mentors to be developed into a concept plan that was reviewed by Council staff and Auckland Normal Intermediate design groups prior to final comple)on.
