To design a fragment of shared or private open space that contains hard surfaces, structures, plantings and possibly storm-water treatment as appropriate.

Design Statement: The fragment I have chosen shows a composition of forest fragments, Pa Harakeke and low footbridge crossing the stream. From this fragment I have developed sections and perspectives to demonstrate the design strategy. This is a result of phase one and two.

ECOLOGY DEVELOPMENT AND PLANTING STRATEGY

The combination of shared spaces are just a small part to show how it will enhance the amenity values and contribute to Pohara Maraes unique sense of place. By highlighting what already exists and what needs to be restored. There is so much potential to the site, so in this case I have aimed to enhance the historical pa site where it is surrounded in Harakeke to act as a cultural resource but protect the pa site as well. It creates open space in a swarming amount of trees to identify it within the landscape. This strives to create that spiritual and cultural connection with whanau and ancestors. I have also aimed to restore the stream through riparian corridors. Adjacent to these are forest fragments which could potentially be pine or manuka. We intend to provide cultural resources for domestic purposes. Providing access and increasing indigenous biodiversity will also improve ecological and cultural aspects for Pohara and Ngati Koroki Kahukura. This is a developing plan which will encourage tangata whenua to work towards livelihood sustainability and economic and ecological resilience.

STREAM VIEW AND CORRIDORS

Stormwater and Water Quality Practices Riparian Management • Leave grass buffer strips (2m or more) for cultivated land next to waterways • Fence stock out of waterways Fencing could range from permanent 8 wire to temporary electric fencing during grazing periods, depending on individual farm needs and preferences Cropping Management • Establish in-field grass buffer strips on sloping paddocks • Use winter cover crops on fallow paddocks Grazing Management • Strip graze towards waterways, rather than away from them • Use controlled grazing regimes on winter crops (back-fencing and onoff grazing) to reduce risk of leaching, run off, soil loss and compaction. Materials Pathways are to consist of either 5/12mm of Waikato Pea or range of basecourse metals from 7-20mm. Avoid using any informal paths as it will create soil erosion and impact surface water run off. Vehicular Routes are to consist of basecourse 20mm-40mm or porous concrete. Trying to create a light footprint on the landscape and impervious surfaces. Boardwalks across the river must be less than 1.5 metres from the ground and have grip surfaces. No railings at this height allows people to interact with stream and suroundings. Timber hardwood 5 should be sourced locally. Grip surface for the boardwalk should also be considered.

PA SITE SECTION Circular spatial arrangment of Harakeke situated as a 20 metre buffer of the site to create a sense of Mauri by providing open space which also acts as cultural resource to create the idea of connecting with tangata whenua/mokopuna and ancestors.

Adjacent to these are indigenous forest fragments which are continued throughout the sit to extend the existing indigenous patch on site. This is to establish and strengthen ecological corridors and connections between the maunga and the awa. Increasing biodiversity and attracting fauna into the site would be an ecnouraging plan to strives towards. Forest fragments also reduce soil erosion but planting them strategically along the steep slopes to reduce water run off and erosion cause and effect. Riparian Corridors wil also encourage this ecological connections but also improve existing site conditions. Aiming to improve water flow and retain it withing the stream would be a key objective. This would also be encourge redirecting overland flow paths into the stream banks to strive towards firstly restoring the stream and then working towards establishing stream bio-diversity to provide cultural resources and benefit ecological aspects.
