Grace Statwick is a painter and miniaturist living and working at Dancing Rabbit ecovillage in rural Missouri. With a background in large-scale sculpture and set and prop construction for theater and film, she brings a sense of magic and wonder to all of her creations.

‘The Herbalist’ depicts a woman kneeling to tend to her garden in a postapocalyptic landscape, complete with a red sky, shattered moon, and smoldering city skyline. I was inspired to make this piece by the deeply disturbing skies of last year's West coast wildfires, but also by my friend's herb-lore and knowledge of plants. I wanted the story of the painting to be that despite our eco-anxiety at the way we are certainly destroying our environment and our civilization, there will always be individuals who will have deep connections to growing and living things, and will fight to keep them alive. The red in this painting is bold and represents greed and destruction while also graphically contrasting the vivid green of the new plants. The painting is graphic but subtle.
