MYTHS ABOUT ONLINE LEARNING This presentation gives an account of some misconceptions.
Elizabeth Arias
According to research conducted by SRI International for the US Department of Education, “On average, students under online learning conditions obtained better results than those who received faceto-face instruction. ” as in Laureate International Universities, n.d.
STUDENTS IN AN ONLINE CLASS WILL NOT LEARN AS MUCH AS THEY WILL IN A FACETO FACE CLASS
Online classes that are carefully planned include social interaction to create a sense of community. Frequent and timely feedback from the instructor reduces the sense of isolation in students.
THE LACK OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION PROMOTES STUDENTS’ ISOLATION IN ONLINE SETTINGS
ï‚„
At the beginning, planning may demand more time as online classes are not limited to learning content because they include various technological tools. However, the use of these resources, will increase students' motivation and interest.
THE PLANNING OF AN ONLINE CLASS REQUIRES MORE TIME THAN THE ONE OF A FACE-TO FACE
One can log in to the course frequently and respond quickly to students. Many instructors create "virtual office hours" to meet with their students. As the size of classes in traditional schools continues to increase, the ability to connect with students online is an advantage in offering personalized attention to large groups of students.
ï‚„
INSTRUCTORS CANNOT GIVE PERSONAL ATTENTION TO THE STUDENT IN AN ONLINE CLASS
ï‚„
Well-developed online classes can be more interactive than those that are face to face. Participation in a classroom is often limited to a few students. Synchronous online discussions allow students the flexibility of time needed to build their knowledge and opinions, so they can share with their classmates.
THERE IS LESS PARTICIPATION IN AN ONLINE CLASS THAN IN A FACE-TO FACE ONE
The creation of an environment that includes activities in which students have incentives to work hard, makes an online course interesting and exciting. Give your students an idea of how you will modify your class and expand their knowledge.
YOU CAN’T CONVEY EMOTIONS AND ENTHUSIASM IN AN ONLINE CLASS
ď‚„
Online classes must include several techniques in content delivery. Displaying long-teaching recordings will drive your students away. It is recommended that you include short videos along with other teaching, assessment and feedback methodology.
DIGITAL TEACHING IS NOT LONGVIDEO CONFERENCES
Many of the educational technologies that exist do not require you to be a computer programmer. Therefore, you do not have to be an HTML expert to develop web pages. Technology staff at your institution can offer support. In addition, there are several resources available on the Internet to help you learn about and how to integrate technology.
ď‚„
YOU MUST BE A TECHNOLOGY EXPERT TO DELIVER AN ONLINE CLASS
ï‚„
This is a false argument; we need to plan, adjust and adapt to new learning environments. Digital learning brings ample opportunities for teaching and engaging the new generations while meeting their needs.
EDUCATORS WILL DISAPPEAR IN THE FUTURE AS LEARNING WILL BECOME AUTONOMOUS
