• Like the walls, the car is a status symbol in Brazil, mainly used for individual purposes, increasing the social isolation and degradation of the public space as a whole. Therefore, it is also a wall.

• The walls give the idea of exclusivity; of being part of a privileged group that lives isolated and protected while enjoying a homogeneous neighborhood and its leisure facilities.

• The citizens of São Paulo spend in average 45 days per year in the traffic jam.

• Still, According to inmates, 71% prefer to rob walled houses and 54% say that the walls actually conceal them.

• On average, the travel and locomotion time per day is 3:06 hours by car and 3:11 hours by public transport.

• Decree No45.817/2005 requires an uncovered private common area of at least 5m2/residential unit inside every condominium, resulting in enclosed and isolated from the street ground-floors.

• Only 25% of the population of São Paulo has a proper public transport station in a radius of 1km from where they live. *source: ITDP Brasil

• The average number of passengers per car is of 1,4 in São Paulo. • At peak and rush times, the standing passengers density per square meter inside public vehicles is usually higher than 6 (comfort´s limit number) resulting also in crush loads. *source: Companhia de Engenharia de Tráfego (CET)

• It is common to implement a single enterprise in a whole block, resulting in high-rises surrounded by a single wall and narrow sidewalks. As the municipal as well as the federal legislation do no present any specific requirements about the interaction with the surroundings, the condominiums usually have no or few relation to the context. ) *source:http://gestaourbana.prefeitura. sp.gov.br/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/ M1-C5_pranchas_projeto_04.pdf

“The recent transformations are generating spaces in which different social groups are again closer to one another but separated by walls and technologies of security, and they tend not to circulate or interact in common areas”

“(...) where public space no longer relates to the modern ideals of commonality and universality. Instead, it promotes separateness and the idea that social groups should live in homogeneous enclaves, isolated from those who are perceived as different.” (CALDEIRA, 214)

Paraisópolis, Sp source: Google Street View

“(...) all types of housing in contemporary São Paulo have gone through processes of enclosure largely in response to the fear of crime. The necessity of enclosing has affected poor and rich residents alike and transformed the way they live and the quality of public interactions in the city.” (CALDEIRA, 289)

The first and catalyst intervention is to transform the MLP Pavilion into an infrastructure and skills hub for all of those who are willing to learn something and share their skills in return. There is no hierarchy or classification of the skills; the system is straight to the point: to be a “pupil” you have to be a “teacher” at some point. There is no “classification” of who participates with who. What matters in this hub is what you can and are proud of doing and therefore would like to share it with someone.

The pavilion is the central axis of the interactions and exchange of skills. The structure remains free as a open space under the roof, hosting simpler and somehow more spontaneous “deals” that do not demand too much space and equipment. So that activities are trigged, some multi-task elements are provided: the oven, for example, can be used for many purposes such as backing, pottery or forging. As long as the business grow, people settle down and work on their own workshop or offices. Developing in this way the new neighborhood of Vila Leopoldina.

Still, basic furniture and elements such as chairs, tables, lamps, screens and carpets are organized hanging on a grid above the ground level being always available for anyone who might need them. As there is no fixed layout, the elements move towards the floor and towards the chosen spot when requested. This way, the space adapts to the user´s need and is constantly under development.
