PILNVEIDOJAMIES NO GADA GADÄ&#x20AC;

2018. gads iezīmējies ar jaunām iniciatīvām. Latvijas Universitātes (LU) un LU fonda mecenātiem un draugiem Amerikā izveidots moderns portāls friendslu.com. Tagad latviešu izcelsmes ASV pilsoņi sadarbībā ar partnerorganizāciju “Friends of the University of Latvia” varēs vēl ērtākā veidā atbalstīt LU, izmantojot tiešsaistes ziedošanas portālu, turklāt varēs saņemt nodokļu atlaides. LU Absolventu takas atbalstam norisinājusies pirmā izsole virtuālajā vidē “No sirds Universitātei!”, kuras gaitā tika izsolīti 15 dažādi unikāli priekšmeti un pasākumi. Lielu atbalstu šīs izstādes norisei sniedza tieši LU absolventi visā pasaulē. Sadarbībā ar ilggadējo LU fonda mecenātu Pēteri Alunānu esam izgājuši Baltijas telpā. Pateicoties mecenāta iniciatīvai, piešķirta pirmā P. Alunāna ģimenes stipendija Viļņas Universitātes studentei.

Sekmīgi turpinām cieņas pilnas attiecības kā ar LU fonda mecenātiem, stipendiju komisijām, stipendiātiem, tā ar LU vidi, sadarbības partneriem un citiem labdarības fondiem. Pateicoties mecenātu atbalstam, pirmoreiz LU polārpētnieku komanda veiksmīgi sasniegusi Antarktīdu un veikusi unikālus mērījumus. Sniedzot aktuālākos lasījumus zinātnē, pirmo reizi LU 76. Starptautiskajā zinātniskajā konferencē uzstājās 14 doktoranti, kuri saņēmuši mecenātu stipendijas. Pirmoreiz stipendiātu sumināšanas pasākuma programmā iekļāvām augstvērtīgus akadēmiskos lasījumus. Lepojamies, ka par LU Gada studentu kļuva vairākkārtējais stipendiāts. Tas ir apliecinājums, ka mecenātu ieguldījums LU studentu stipendijās sniedz izcilus rezultātus. LU fonda vārdā pateicos ikvienam ziedotājam, kas ir atbalstījis Latvijas Universitāti 2018. gadā un aicinu šo tradīciju turpināt arī 2019. gadā!

2018 is marked by new initiatives. We have created a modern portal friendslu.com for the University of Latvia (UL), the philanthropists of UL Foundation and the friends in America. From now on, the US citizens of Latvian origin in partnership with the “Friends of the University of Latvia” will be able to support the UL conveniently by using the online donation portal and receive tax reductions. In support of the UL Alumni trail, the first auction in the virtual environment “From heart to the University!” has taken place, auctioning 15 different unique items and events. UL graduates from all over the world provided great support to this event. The long-time UL Foundation philanthropist Pēteris Alunāns continues cooperation with the UL Foundation, and this initiative has enabled us to rise to the Baltic scale. Thanks to his patronage, the first Alunāns Family Scholarship was awarded to a student at the Vilnius University.

In spirit of mutual appreciation and respect, we are continuing our relationship with the UL Foundation’s philanthropists, scholarship commissions, scholarship recipients, and the UL environment, cooperation partners and other charitable foundations. Thanks to the patronage, the UL Polar Research Team successfully reached Antarctica and made unique measurements. For the first time, 14 doctoral students who received patronage scholarships spoke at the UL 76 th International Scientific Conference. This was the first year to organise highly assessed academic readings at the event congratulating scholarship recipients. We are proud that a recipient of multiple scholarships has become the student of the year at the University of Latvia. This is a proof that patrons’ contribution to UL student scholarships leads to outstanding results. On behalf of the UL Foundation, I am delighted to thank every philanthropist who supported the University of Latvia in 2018, and I hope we will continue this tradition in 2019!

IMPROVING FROM YEAR TO YEAR

NOZĪMĪGĀKIE PAGRIEZIENA PUNKTI

1925

Dižmecenāts Kristaps Morbergs (1844-1928) novēl Latvijas Universitātei 8 namīpašumus ar mērķi palīdzēt savai tautai pacelties garīgi un ētiski. Vēl šobrīd talantīgākie LU un citu augstskolu studenti saņem K. Morberga vārdā nosauktās stipendijas.

2004

LU nodibina Latvijas Universitātes fondu, kas sadarbībā ar mecenātiem un partneriem atbalsta augstāko izglītību, investējot Latvijas valsts nākotnes izaugsmes projektos. LU fonds atbalsta izcilākos studentus un pētniekus, modernas mācību vides un rekonstrukcijas projektus.

2012

Nodibina labdarības fondu Friends of the University of Latvia (501 (c) (3) charity). Tā ir LU fonda partnerorganizācija, kas apvieno ASV pilsoņus – Latvijas Universitātes atbalstītājus. Kopējais ziedojumu apmērs sasniedzis vairāk kā 500 tūkstošus ASV dolāru.

2018

Četru gadu laikā mecenāts Mikrotīkls (1996) LU ziedo 2 miljonus eiro, lai veicinātu eksakto, medicīnas un veselības zinātņu attīstīšanu. Uzņēmuma dibinātāji ir Džons M. Tallijs un LU absolvents Arnis Riekstiņš.

MOST SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES

1925

The noble patron Kristaps Morbergs (1844–1928) in his will leaves the University of Latvia 8 real estate properties to enable the people of Latvia to grow spiritually and ethically. Currently, the most talented students of the University of Latvia and other higher education institutions receive scholarships named in honour of K. Morbergs.

2004

The University of Latvia establishes the University of Latvia Foundation, which in cooperation with patrons and partners supports higher education by investing in projects contributing to future growth of Latvian state. The UL Foundation supports outstanding students and researchers, modern learning environment and reconstruction projects.

2012

The charity fund Friends of the University of Latvia is founded. It is a partner organization of the UL Foundation, which unites the US citizens – supporters of the University of Latvia. The total amount of donations exceeds 500 000 USD.

2018

Within four years, the patron company Mikrotīkls (1996) has donated 2 million EUR to the UL to promote the development of exact, medical and health sciences. Founders of the company are John Martin Tally and a graduate of the University of Latvia Arnis Riekstiņš.

2018. gadā 646 mecenāti un atbalstītāji Latvijas Universitātei ziedojuši 892 604 EUR. Lielākais ziedojums: 250 000 EUR no mecenāta Mikrotīkls. Noslēgti 53 ziedojumu līgumi projektu un stipendiju atbalstam.

2018. gadā atbalstu saņēmuši 550 studenti. Stipendijās izmaksāti 649 197 eiro: eksaktajās un dabaszinātnēs – 136 557 EUR humanitārajās zinātnēs – 55 876 EUR sociālajās zinātnēs – 62 602 EUR novadu stipendijas – 61 870 EUR prakses stipendijas – 196 229 EUR sporta stipendijas – 108 154 EUR sociālās stipendijas – 27 908 EUR

Atbalstīti 68 projekti 569 961 eiro apmērā: 46 eksakto zinātņu un medicīnas projekti – 452 054 EUR 4 humanitāro zinātņu projekti – 8 561 EUR 13 sociālo un tiesību zinātņu projekti – 49 807 EUR 3 kultūras projekti – 52 702 EUR 2 sporta projekti – 6 837 EUR

In 2018 646 philanthropists donated 892 604 EUR to the University of Latvia. The largest donation of 250 000 EUR was granted by Mikrotīkls. 53 donation agreements were concluded in 2018, enabling the funding of projects and scholarships.

In 2018, the support has been received by 550 students. The disbursed scholarships amount to 649 197 EUR: scholarships in exact and natural sciences – 136 557 EUR scholarships in humanities – 55 876 EUR scholarships in social sciences – 62 602 EUR regional scholarships – 61 870 EUR internship scholarships – 196 229 EUR sports scholarships – 108 154 EUR social support scholarships – 27 908 EUR

Since its inception in 2012, “Friends of the University of Latvia” (501 (c) (3) charity) has established an influential organisation uniting the University of Latvia benefactors in the United States. While the majority of donors are the members of the Latvian diaspora community, the number of non-Latvian donors is growing rapidly. We welcome anyone who shares our mission to enhance higher education in Latvia to consider making a donation or bequest.

Vienā no pēdējām fonda valdes sēdēm klātesošie pārstāvji ievēlēja Mārtiņu Andersonu par fonda valdes priekšsēdētāju; turklāt valdes lokam pievienojās arī jauns loceklis – Pīters Aloizs Ragaušs, Latvijas goda ģenerālkonsuls Teksasas štatā.

During our recent annual board meeting, the members of the board elected Mr. Mārtiņš as the Chair of the Foundation, and also welcomed a new member to the board, Mr. Peter A. Ragaušs, the Honorary Consul General of Latvia for the State of Texas.

2018. gads bijis ļoti auglīgs labdarības gads. Piemēram, novembrī saņemtie ziedojumi bija trīs reizes lielāki nekā šajā pašā laika posmā 2017. gadā. Daļa no saņemtajiem līdzekļiem ir beznosacījuma, kas ļauj valdei novirzīt līdzekļus jomās, kurās tie ir visvairāk nepieciešami. Taču ziedojumi ar specifiskiem nosacījumiem pērn tika novirzīti, piemēram, Latvijas Universitātes Biznesa inkubatoram, dabaszinātņu attīstībai, kā arī LU Vēstures un filozofijas fakultātes pētnieku atbalstam.

2018 has proven to be a very fruitful year for the charity. For instance, donations through November were more than triple the amount raised in the same period for 2017. Some of the gifts we receive are unrestricted, enabling the board to direct funds to the areas where the support is needed the most. The restricted gifts directed to a specific cause have also been made last year to support the areas like the University of Latvia Business Incubator, development of natural sciences, and research at the Faculty of History and Philosophy.

2019. gadā mēs esam izvirzījuši ievērojamus līdzekļu piesaistīšanas mērķus, kas vienlaicīgi saskan ar Latvijas Universitātes gadsimta jubileju. Kopā ar jauno un līdzšinējo iesaistīto biedru, ģimeņu un augstskolas absolventu atbalstu mēs ceram nodrošināt spožāku nākotni Latvijas izglītībai.

For 2019, our charity has set ambitious fundraising goals to coincide with the University of Latvia’s 100th anniversary. With the help of generous individuals, families, and university alumni we hope to ensure a bright future for education in Latvia.

Viens no jaunākajiem Friends of the University of Latvia valdes locekļiem ir Pīters Aloizs Ragaušs. Dzimis Mičiganā trimdas latviešu ģimenē, ar dzimtas saknēm Latgalē, P. A. Ragauša apņēmība un spars Latvijas augstākās izglītības, biznesa attiecību un kultūras veicināšanā ir patiesi apbrīnojams. Darbojoties Baltijas-Amerikas Brīvības fondā (BAFF), viņš ik gadu palīdz desmitiem Baltijas augstskolu absolventu atrast gadu ilgas prakses iespējas attiecīgajās studiju jomās ASV. Būdams ilggadējs vairāku lielo ASV enerģētikas uzņēmumu vadītājs un Latvijas goda konsuls Teksasā, Pīters A. Ragaušs arī dalās savā pieredzē enerģētikas jomā ar Latviju, lai mazinātu valsts atkarību no dabasgāzes importa un ārvalstu enerģētikas infrastruktūras. Viņš vada Latvijas vēlēšanu iecirkni Hjūstonā, kā arī rīko latviešu svētku saietus, latviešu filmu vakarus un citus kultūras pasākumus vietējai Hjūstonas latviešu kopienai.

Atbildot uz jautājumu, kāpēc ziedot augstākajai izglītībai, Pīters A. Ragaušs min piemērus, cik tālu jauni, enerģiski un talantīgi cilvēki var tikt, ja saņem papildu atbalstu. Viņaprāt, atbalstīt tās universitātes un fondus, kas piedāvā stipendijas vislabākajiem studentiem, nozīmē ieguldīt cilvēkos, kuri nākotnē spēs nonākt vadošos amatos. Kā Hārvarda Universitātes absolvents Pīters A. Ragaušs varētu ziedot savai alma mater, tomēr viņš norāda, ka Hārvarda jau saņem pietiekami daudz finansējuma, savukārt ziedojumiem citviet varētu būt lielāka pievienotā vērtība. “Es varu ziedot šeit, ASV, vai arī varu to darīt salīdzinoši mazā valstī kā Latvija. Ziedot Latvijā atmaksātos vairākkārtīgi un sniegtu daudzkārt lielāku ieguvumu nekā ASV. Bieži tieši šādi motivēju citus – tu varētu ziedot, piemēram, Kalifornijas Universitātei Losandželosā (UCLA) vai Hārvardai, taču, ziedojot Latvijas Universitātei, ziedojums daudz nozīmīgāk izmainīs kāda dzīvi,” secina Ragaušs.

One of the most recent board members of the Friends of the University of Latvia is Peter Aloizs Ragaušs. Born in Michigan to immigrant Latvians in exile and with roots in Latgale, P. A. Ragaušs’ dedication and energy to promoting Latvian higher education, business relations and culture is enviable indeed. Through his work at the Baltic-American Freedom Foundation (BAFF), he helps dozens of Baltic college graduates find one-year internships in their field of study in the US each year. Meanwhile as a long-time director of various major US energy companies and an Honorary Consul of Latvia in Texas, Peter A. Ragaušs brings his energy experience to Latvia with the goal of making the country less dependent on natural gas imports and foreign energy infrastructure. All the while he is hosting a Latvian election station, Latvian holiday get-togethers, Latvian movie nights and other cultural events for the local Latvian community in Houston.

When asked why donate to the higher education, Peter A. Ragaušs cites examples of how far young talented people can go, if they receive an extra boost. In his mind, supporting the universities and foundations that provide scholarships to top performing students means investing in the people who will likely be in positions of influence later on. As a Harvard University alumnus, Peter A. Ragaušs could be donating to his alma mater. But he points that Harvard already receives plenty of funding, whereas donations elsewhere might have a larger marginal impact. “I could give here in the US or I could do it in a small country like Latvia. Giving in Latvia would pay off several times more and would create a several times greater benefit as in the US. That’s the pitch I often give – you could donate to, say, UCLA or Harvard, but if you donate to the University of Latvia, that donation will make a much bigger difference to someone’s life,” Ragaušs concludes.

2013.gadā trīs Zariņu ģimenes atvases – Antra Zariņa-Trašere, Kristaps Zariņš un Bertrams Zariņš – dibināja sava tēva un trimdas luterāņu garīdznieka Richarda Zariņa piemiņas fondu ar nolūku stiprināt un pilnveidot latviešu zināšanas par vēsturi un tās nozīmi, sekmēt interesi par vēstures nozīmi mūsdienu notikumos Latvijā. Šobrīd R. Zariņa piemiņas fonds ir nozīmīgākais atbalsta punkts un dāsnākais mecenāts tieši LU Vēstures un filozofijas fakultātei (VFF), ļaujot zinātkāriem, mērķtiecīgiem un entuziasma pilniem studentiem un pētniekiem veidot apjomīgus pētījumus. Richarda Zariņa trīs bērni pratuši novērtēt zināšanu un kvalitatīvas izglītības nemainīgi lielo lomu karjeras veidošanā un personīgajā izaugsmē. Ar R. Zariņa piemiņas fonda palīdzību, kas līdz šim ziedojis vairāk nekā 100 000 ASV dolāru Latvijas vēsturnieku atbalstam, pētnieki un studenti saņem nepieciešamo atbalstu pētniecības darbam un jaunu atziņu pienesumam vēstures zinātnē.

Piemiņas fonda izveidi iedvesmoja LU VFF profesors Dr. hist. Ēriks Jēkabsons, kurš ASV veica vēstures liecību izpēti Latvijas dokumentu arhīvā, iepazinās ar trimdas latviešu Zariņu ģimeni un iededza mecenātos dzirksteli atbalstīt jauno pētnieku centienus atrast vēl neizpētītus vēstures avotus, tādējādi attīstīt Latvijas vēsturi. Ar R. Zariņa piemiņas stipendiju palīdzību daudzi jaunie vēsturnieki ir radījuši pētījumus, kuros meklētas atbildes gan uz Latvijas un citu valstu sadarbības jautājumiem, gan neatkarības atjaunošanu. Sniegtais atbalsts ļāvis izdot vairākas apjomīgas monogrāfijas, piemēram, 2018.gadā klajā nāca Dr. hist. Ē. Jēkabsona grāmata “Latvijas un Amerikas Savienoto Valstu attiecības 1918.–1922.gadā”. Stipendija ir ne tikai studējošo zinātniskās intereses novērtējums, bet arī parāda neizsīkstošo gribu censties, darīt un pētīt. Tuvākajā laikā varam sagaidīt izdotas monogrāfijas gan par Otrā pasaules kara norisēm Kurzemes pusē, gan bēgļu kustību, gan luterāņu draudzēm Vidzemē.

In 2013, three American Latvians – Antra Zariņa-Trašere, Kristaps Zariņš and Bertrams Zariņš – founded an Honorary Foundation to commemorate their father, Lutheran pastor Richards Zariņš with the purpose of strengthening and improving Latvian knowledge of history and its importance in current events, as well as to emphasize the significance represented by the history of Latvia. At the moment, the Honorary Foundation of R. Zariņš is the leading supporter and the most generous patron of the UL Faculty of History and Philosophy (FHP), enabling outstanding, hardworking and enthusiastic students and researchers to develop extensive research. The three children of Richards Zariņš appreciate the constant, decisive role of knowledge and quality education in career development and personal growth. With the help of Honorary Foundation of R. Zariņš, which so far has disbursed donations in excess of 100 000 USD, Latvian researchers and students receive the necessary support to conduct their work and they are ready to enrich the history studies with new ideas and views.

Creation of the Honorary Foundation was inspired by the UL FHP Prof. Dr. hist. Ēriks Jēkabsons, who studied Latvian document archives in USA, established acquaintance with the Latvian family in exile and ignited that little spark of enthusiasm into patrons’ hearts that motivated them to support the efforts of young researchers to find unexplored sources of history to develop the history of Latvia. The scholarships granted by the Honorary Foundation of R. Zariņš have enabled Latvian historians to create researches that seek answers to issues of cooperation between Latvia and other countries, as well as explore restoration of Latvia’s independence, as well as brought about publication of several large monographs, for example, Dr. hist. Ē. Jēkabsons in 2018 released a book “Relations between Latvia and the United States in 1918–1922”. The scholarship is not only an assessment of researcher’s scientific interest, it also shows the unquenchable aspiration to seek new information and implement research. We can expect new monographs about World War II events in Kurzeme, refugee movements and Lutheran churches in Vidzeme soon.

LU Biznesa, vadības un ekonomikas fakultātes (BVEF) asoc. profesore Džineta Dimante savulaik saņēmusi Austrālijas latvieša Imanta Roņa stipendiju, kas viņai palīdzēja uzrakstīt promocijas darbu par trimdas latviešu ieguldījumu Latvijas tautsaimniecībā. Dž.Dimante atzīst, ka atbildību un pienākumu dot atpakaļ savai alma mater sniedz apziņa, ka pati studiju laikā saņēmusi atbalstu. Tas ir mudinājums palīdzēt arī citiem. Sidnejietis Imants Jēkabs Ronis (1927-2014) savulaik sniedza ievērojamu atbalstu, trīs gadus ziedojot stipendijai, kas palīdzēja LU studentei Dž. Dimantei 2003.-2006. gadā uzrakstīt savu promocijas darbu. Mecenāts Otrā pasaules kara radīto seku dēļ devies trimdā. Sākotnēji Vācijas bēgļu nometnē strādājis par skolotāju, bet tālāk devies uz Austrāliju, kur aktīvi darbojies Sidnejas latviešu sabiedrībā. Tieši izteiktā interese par vēsturi un patriotiskais gars mudināja mecenātu

I. Roni atbalstīt LU studenti apjomīgā pētījuma veikšanai, kas lielā mērā atspoguļo diasporas latviešu centienus atbalstīt savu Tēvzemi. Dž. Dimante uzsver, ka iegūtā stipendija jebkuram stipendiātam uzliek milzu atbildību pret mecenātu. Pētniece arī atzīst, ka atbalsts palīdzējis izvēlēties promocijas darba tēmu, pētot trimdas latviešus. Pētījumā secināts, ka vērtīgākais trimdas latviešu ieguldījums bija nemateriālais, jo vietējiem latviešiem radās iespēja iegūt zināšanas, pieredzi tirgus ekonomikas funkcionēšanā, kontaktus ar trimdas latviešu mītnes zemēm, kas bieži pavēra iespējas jauniem tirgiem. Stipendiāte atminas saņemto atbalstu kā nozīmīgu atspēriena punktu: “Kad pētnieks vai students saņem stipendiju, tas ir gan pagodinājums, gan arī milzīga atbildība, kas pamudina strādāt cītīgāk, pētīt, izdarīt līdz galam.” Tas arī ir viens no iemesliem, kādēļ Dž. Dimante ziedo LU – tā ir pienākuma sajūta par līdz šim saņemto atbalstu, kā arī vēlme palīdzēt citiem.

EXILE LATVIANS CONTRIBUTE TO GROWTH OF UL AND LATVIA 36

Professor Džineta Dimante at the UL Faculty of Business, Management and Economics received a scholarship from Australian Latvian Imants Ronis, which at the time helped her to write a doctoral thesis on the contribution of exile Latvians to the Latvian economy. Dž. Dimante accentuates that the wish and responsibility to reciprocate to her alma mater is engendered by the acknowledgement that she herself has received a support during her studies. This encourages her to help others, too. Imants Jēkabs Ronis (1927–2014), who spent his life in Sydney, once provided a considerable support for a three-year scholarship that enabled UL student Dž. Dimante to write her doctoral thesis in 2003–2006. The patron went into exile in the aftermath of the World War II. Initially, he worked as a teacher at a German refugee camp, subsequently emigrating to Australia, where he was an active member of the Sydney Latvian Society. The express interest in history and the patriotic spirit urged the patron I. Ronis to support the UL students in carrying out a

large scale study reflecting diaspora’s efforts to support their Motherland. Dž. Dimante emphasizes that the scholarship awarded to any scholar is an enormous responsibility toward the patron. The researcher also admits that the support has directed her toward choosing the theme of her doctoral thesis aiming at studies of exile Latvians. Her study concluded that the most valuable contribution of exile Latvians was intangible, as the local Latvians had the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the functioning of the market economy, acquired the contacts with the home countries of exile Latvians, thereby often boosting the opportunities in new markets. The scholar remembers that the received support was an important stepping stone: “When a researcher or a student receives a scholarship, it is both an honour and a huge responsibility that encourages us to work harder, to study, to do it all.” This is also one of the reasons why Dž. Dimante donates to the UL – it is a sense of duty instigated by the support received earlier and the desire to help others.

Juris Baldunčiks ir LU Biznesa, vadības un ekonomikas fakultātes (BVEF) absolvents un arī kādreizējais LU fonda stipendiāts, turklāt aktīvs ziedotājs LU fondam. Nu, gluži tāpat kā latviešu sakāmvārdā – dots devējam atdodas. Studiju gadi katram ir atšķirīgi, bet J. Baldunčiks norāda, ka īstam studentam sirdī kvēlo dziļa mīlestība pret savu alma mater vēl arī ilgi pēc absolvēšanas. Tieši tāpēc biznesa vadības speciālists zina, ka nepieciešams atbalstīt citus jaunos censoņus to studiju gaitās un laiku pa laikam ziedo LU fondam. Kādreizējais stipendiāts aicina citus studentus izmantot ikvienu iespēju. Noteikti doties Erasmus+ pieredzes apmaiņas braucienos un gūt pasaules elpu. Bieži vien studentiem šķiet, ka studijas līdzinās mācību procesam skolā, tomēr J. Baldunčiks uzsver, ka universitāte ir vieta, kur iemācīties sevi pilnveidot paša spēkiem, prast atrast meklēto un lūkoties pēc racionālākā risinājuma.

Studiju process un iekšējais zināšanu dzinulis disciplinē cilvēku, kas noderēs arī turpmākajā dzīvē. LU ir vieta, kur izmēģināt visdažādākās interešu nodarbības, un, uzklausot bijušā stipendiāta viedokli, atliek vien sasparoties un pašiem doties vai nu uz deju nodarbībām, sportu, vai kādu citu aizraujošu ārpusstudiju aktivitāti. Viens nu ir skaidrs – nesēdēt malā un teikt iespējām “jā”. LU fonds savas pastāvēšanas laikā ir palīdzējis simtiem izciliem studentiem un perspektīviem speciālistiem īstenot savas zinātniskās ieceres un plānus. J. Baldunčiks teic, ka stipendiātiem jāpaļaujas uz to mazo veiksmes kripatiņu, kas allaž noder, bet vienlaikus iesaka kalt savu laimi pašiem. Arī turpmāk LU fonds aicina stipendiātus – gan esošos, gan bijušos – ziedot, lai atbalstītu vērtīgu ideju īstenošanu, materiāli nenodrošinātus studentus un celtu izglītības kvalitāti un prestižu arvien vairāk.

Juris Baldunčiks is a successful alumnus of the UL Faculty of Business, Management and Economics and a former scholar of the Foundation of the UL, as well as an active donor to the UL Foundation. He attests to the old proverb – you reap what you sow. The years of studies are different for everyone, but J. Baldunčiks notes that a true student in his heart is deeply in love with his alma mater even long after graduation. Therefore, the business management specialist knows that it is necessary to support other students in their studies and thus occasionally donates to the UL Foundation. The former scholarship recipient encourages other students to take every opportunity open to them. To definitely go on an Erasmus+ experience exchange trip and to gain wider worldview. Often, students feel that the studies are similar to the school process, but J. Baldunčiks emphasizes that the university is a place for people to learn how to improve themselves, to find what they are looking for and to search for the most rational solution.

The study process and the internal drive to seek knowledge discipline a person, and this skill will also be useful later in life. The UL is a place explore a wide variety of interest activities, and the opinion of a former scholar is just about getting up and going either to dance classes, sports or to enjoy other exciting out-of-school activities. One thing is clear – one should not stand aside and should always say “yes” to good opportunities that come along. Since its establishment, the UL Foundation has helped hundreds and hundreds of outstanding students and excellent professionals to implement their scientific plans and encourage their ambitions. J. Baldunčiks says that scholars must rely on the small piece of success that is always useful, but at the same time recommends that they should work at creating their own fortune. The UL Foundation will continue to encourage scholars – both current and former – to hold up the implementation of valuable ideas, support students and raise the quality and prestige of education.

Ilze Elbere šobrīd studē LU Bioloģijas fakultātes doktorantūrā un otro gadu turpina saņemt mecenāta Mikrotīkls stipendiju doktorantūras studentiem eksakto, dzīvības un medicīnas zinātņu jomā. Jauno zinātnieci raksturo augstas darba spējas, rūpība un apņēmība. Ne velti LU fonda mecenātu atbalstu saņēmusi sešus gadus un turpina iedvesmot jaunos censoņus. I. Elbere ir izcilniece, perspektīva jaunā zinātniece un lielisks paraugs jaunajiem studentiem, kas iedvesmo un ļauj noticēt saviem spēkiem. Nu jau sesto gadu pēc kārtas viņa saņem LU fonda mecenātu atbalstu un iedrošina studentus pieteikties stipendijām: “Stipendijas ir ļoti liela vērtība, varbūt vienam tas nozīmē iespēju mācīties un aizbraukt uz kādu konferenci, kādam atkal iespēju uzsākt patstāvīgu dzīvi.”

Stipendiāte uzsver – lai arī stipendija bijusi nozīmīgs atbalsts patstāvīgas dzīves uzsākšanā, tomēr tā nes līdzi arī atbildību: ”Ja tu esi stipendiāts, tad LU fonda vārda nešana tālāk arī uzliek lielu atbildības sajūtu, un, salīdzinot ar citām iegūtajām stipendijām, vislielākā atbildība ir tieši pret mecenātu Mikrotīkls, jo finansējums ir iespaidīgs. Es to noteikti ļoti novērtēju, un man ir jāattaisno uzticība.” Šobrīd zinātnieces pētījumu galvenais fokuss ir zarnu mikrobioms un tā korelācija ar cilvēka organisma reakciju uz konkrētu medikamentu: “Mūsu mērķis ir nākotnē spēt pārbaudīt cilvēkus, pirms viņi sāk lietot šo medikamentu, lai, vadoties pēc tā, kāds ir pacienta zarnu mikrobioms, varētu noteikt, vai konkrētajam cilvēkam medikaments izraisīs negatīvās blaknes.”

Ilze Elbere currently is a student at the UL Faculty of Biology doctoral programme, and for the second year she receives a scholarship from Mikrotīkls for doctoral students of exact, life and medical sciences. The young scientist is characterized as hardworking, diligent and determined. These qualities have ensured her a continuous support of the UL patrons, and provide inspiration to new achievers. I. Elbere is a prominent young scientist and a great example for young students, inspiring them and building the belief in their own strength. For the sixth consecutive year, she receives support from the UL Foundation’s patrons and encourages the students to apply for scholarships: “Scholarships are a remarkable value, they might either open an opportunity to study or attend a conference, or, in another case, give a chance to start an independent life.”

As a scholarship recipient, she emphasizes that even though the scholarship was an important support in starting an independent life, it also brought along the responsibility: “If you are a scholarship recipient, then representing the UL Foundation’s name comes with a great sense of responsibility and among the scholarships my weightiest responsibility is attached to the patron Mikrotīkls, as the amount of support is impressive. I certainly appreciate this, and I must justify the trust placed in me.” Currently, the main focus of her research is on intestinal microbes and its correlation with the response of the human body to a particular medication: “Our future goal is to be able to test people before they start using this medication to determine the patient’s gut microbes and to establish, whether the medication will cause negative side effects to the individual.”

AUSTRĀLIJAS LATVIEŠA DĀSNAIS ATBALSTS VEICINA MEDICĪNISKĀS IZGLĪTĪBAS ATTĪSTĪBU

Dr. med. Jāņa Priedkalna vārds LU fonda zelta mecenātu lokā ierindojās 2010. gadā, kad, ziedojot 142 000 EUR no pārdotās ģimenes relikvijas, automašīnas “Ferarri”, tika izveidots “Jāņa Priedkalna Medicīnas zinātņu pētniecības fonds”. Austrālijā dzīvojošais mecenāts vēlējies atbalstīt spējīgus un uzņēmīgus medicīnas studentus, attīstīt medicīnu Latvijā un pilnveidot neiroloģijas lauciņu ar jauniem pētījumiem. Pats mecenāts atzinis, ka nekad nebūtu domājis, ka dzīves līkloči viņu novedīs pie intensīva darba akadēmiskajā vidē, tomēr tieši studentu un pētnieku atbalsts ir veids, kā iesākto turpināt. Līdz šim J.Priedkalna Medicīnas zinātņu pētniecības fonda stipendiju ieguvuši seši LU Medicīnas fakultātes studenti, kuriem piešķirtie līdzekļi ļāvuši veltīt uzmanību pētniecībai un jaunu, cilvēcei nozīmīgu risinājumu izstrādei. Viens no Dr. med. J. Priedkalna stipendijas ieguvējiem ir LU Medicīnas fakultātes lektors Jānis Kurlovičs, kurš ar saņemtā atbalsta palīdzību

padziļināti studē farmāciju Helsinkos, kā arī veic ar nozari saistītus pētījumus. Stipendiāts atzīst, ka saņemtais atbalsts ļauj uzņēmīgiem pētniekiem neraizēties par naudas līdzekļiem, bet gan pilnībā pievērsties studiju un pētniecības procesam. J. Kurloviča pētījumu objekts ir bioloģiskie preparāti un medikamenti, tāpēc viņš cer, ka Latvijas zāļu ražotāji saskatīs produkta potenciālu un piekritīs pētījuma rezultātu ieviešanai dzīvē – padarīs daudzu gadu pūļu augli pieejamu pacientiem. Tas nozīmē, ka stipendija ir ilgtermiņa ieguldījums, kas patiesi kalpo kā atbalsts cilvēcei kopumā. Mecenāta dāsnums, milzīgā pieredze akadēmiskajā sfērā, pētniecībā un pasaules redzējums veido Jāņa Priedkalna Medicīnas zinātņu pētniecības fonda stipendijas pievienoto vērtību, kas kalpo ne vien kā nenovērtējams atbalsts, bet arī iedvesmas avots, saskaroties ar dažādiem šķēršļiem un grūtībām pētniecības procesā. Stipendiāts J. Kurlovičs atzīst, ka saņemt šādu finansējumu ir liels gods.

The name of Dr. med. Jānis Priedkalns was enlisted among the golden philanthropists of the UL Foundation in 2010, when the donation of 142 000 EUR from the sold family relics, the car “Ferarri” became the basis of “Jānis Priedkalns Medical Science Research Fund”. The patron residing in Australia wanted to support hard-working and diligent medical students, develop medicine in Latvia and improve the field of neurology with new researches. The philanthropist himself admitted that he would never have thought that life would lead him to work intensively in the academic environment, and the support of students and researchers that will continue what has been started already. So far, six students at the UL Faculty of Medicine have been awarded the scholarship of J. Priedkalns Medical Science Research Fund, which allows students to fully dedicate themselves to research process and development of new solutions that are important for patients and medicine.

One of Dr. med. J. Priedkalns’ scholarships was awarded to the lecturer of the UL Faculty of Medicine Jānis Kurlovičs. Lecturer admits that the support he receives allows to put aside financial concerns, fully focusing on the study and research process. The subject of J. Kurlovičs’ research is biological preparations and medications; therefore, he hopes that Latvian pharmaceutical companies will see the potential of the product and will agree to the implementation of the research results in life – making the fruits of many years’ effort available to patients. This means that the scholarship is a long-term investment that truly serves to support humanity in general. The contributions of the patron, the enormous experience in the academic sphere, the research and the vision of the world create the added value of J. Priedkalns Medical Science Research Fund scholarship, which serves not only as an invaluable aid, but also as a source of inspiration when faced with various obstacles and difficulties in the research process. Scholar J. Kurlovičs emphasizes that receiving this support is a great honour.

ZINĀTNISKĀS PUBLIKĀCIJAS 2018. GADĀ SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS IN 2018 Ilggadējais mecenātu atbalsts LU pētniekiem un studējošajiem sagādājis nozīmīgu zinātnisku pinesumu publikāciju veidā. Atbalstīto projektu īstenotāji un stipendiāti maģistra un doktora studiju līmenī ir publicējuši vairākus desmitus unikālus pētījumus augstas raudzes zinātniskajos žurnālos.

Long-term patronage of UL researchers and students has resulted in significant scientific contributions. The supported project implementers and scholars at master’s and doctoral level have published dozens of unique research papers in outstanding scientific journals.

Web of Science un Scopus tēžu un citātu datubāzēs apkopota arī informācija par zinātnisko žurnālu rakstiem un citām publikācijām.
