Latvijas Universitātes fonda vārdā pateicos LU fonda mecenātiem par atbalstu 2020. gadā. Neskatoties uz jaunajiem apstākļiem, esmu gandarīta, ka mūsu mecenātu vēlme atbalstīt Latvijas Universitātes čaklākos, zinātkārākos studentus un vadošos pētniekus nav mazinājusies. Gada sākumā LU fonda pārstāvji un stipendiāti viesojās Hamburgā, kopā ar Hamburgas Latviešu kopienu pieminot divdesmito gadadienu kopš mecenāta Kurta Hāgena aiziešanas mūžībā. Pateicoties mecenāta Kurta Hāgena atstātajam testamentam 2,4 miljonu eiro vērtībā, kas veido neaizskaramu pamatkapitālu, LU fondam ik gadu ir iespēja piešķirt stipendijas 7 000 eiro apmērā piecu mēnešu studijām kādā no Vācijas augstskolām, un tas ir līdz šim lielākais vienas stipendijas apjoms. 2020. gadā trim LU fonda stipendiju kopām atzīmētas apaļas jubilejas, kopš mecenāti atbalsta Latvijas Universitātes fondu un nodibinātas šīs stipendijas. Kārļa Kaufmaņa piemiņas stipendijai aprit 15 gadi, “AD VERBUM” ģimenes uzņēmuma stipendijai – 10 gadi un Ramānu ģimenes stipendijai – 5 gadi. Paldies ģimenēm par šo atbalstu!

2020. gads apliecinājis, ka arvien nostiprinās Latvijas Universitātes studentu un absolventu vēlme ziedot daudzveidīgiem pētniecības projektiem un stipendijām čaklākajiem, perspektīvākajiem studentiem. 1. Introduction

On behalf of the University of Latvia Foundation, I would like to thank the patrons of the UL Foundation for their continuous and enduring support in 2020. Despite the new circumstances, I am pleased that our patrons are steadfast in their desire to support the most diligent, inquisitive students and leading researchers of the University of Latvia. At the beginning of 2020, representatives of the University of Latvia Foundation and scholarship recipients visited Hamburg, where, together with the Latvian community of Hamburg they marked the twentieth anniversary since the demise of the patron Kurt Hagen. The last will of patron Kurt Hagen contained a bequest of 2.4 million euros to the University of Latvia Foundation, enabling the foundation to award scholarships in the amount of 7 000 euros annually for five months of studies at one of the German universities, which to date is the largest amount of a single scholarship. Last year saw celebration of milestone anniversaries of three University of Latvia Foundation scholarship sets, marking the time since the patrons began supporting the initiatives of the University of Latvia Foundation, establishing Kārlis Kaufmanis Memorial Scholarship, which turned 15, “AD VERBUM” family enterprise scholarship which celebrated the 10th anniversary, while Ramāns Family Scholarship turned 5 years of age. We are honoured by beneficence of these families! In 2020, we also celebrated the 10th anniversary since the beginning of JTI support to the integration of the University of Latvia’s seniors into the modern, dynamic society. We would like to extend our gratitude to all the companies for their longterm support!

2020 confirmed the ever-growing aspiration of students and graduates of the University of Latvia to donate to various research projects and scholarships won by the most assiduous and promising students. Special thanks to the birthday celebrants, who instead of receiving the gifts invited their friends to send contributions to the University of Latvia Foundation and donated themselves. We would like to acknowledge the generosity of each benefactor. Every donation is important and significant! The University of Latvia Foundation would like to thank the compatriots from all over the world for their donations, which provide an opportunity to start and continue studies, as well as implement large-scale research projects. Your support is invaluable and strengthens the University of Latvia’s path to excellence! “The one who changes, shall endure!” – this quote of Latvian poet Jānis Rainis exactly applies to 2020. 2. Abundance of scholarship applications for the academic year 2020/2021 A record number of electronic applications for scholarships open to the University of Latvia firstyear bachelor’s students was received in 2020/2021 academic year, evaluating statistics and applications in recent years.

Stipendiju pieteikumi 2020. / 2021. akadēmiskajam gadam saņemti kuplā skaitā 2020./2021. akadēmiskajā gadā saņemts rekordliels elektronisko pieteikumu skaits Latvijas augstskolu bakalaura 1. kursu studentu stipendiju konkursam, izvērtējot statistiku un pieteikumu dinamiku pēdējos gados. Kopumā 1. kārtā uz sešām dažādām LU fonda pārraudzītajām stipendiju kopām, – stipendiju “Ceļamaize”, Latgales “Ceļamaize”, M.M.V. Petkevičs piemiņas stipendiju, Engures, Jelgavas un Salaspils novada pašvaldības stipendiju – saņemti 136 pieteikumi. Piemēram, salīdzinot 2018./2019. un 2020./2021. akadēmiskā gada elektronisko pieteikumu skaitu “Ceļamaizes” un M.M.V. Petkevičs piemiņas stipendijai, tas pieaudzis divkārt. Savukārt, salīdzinot ar pērno gadu, šogad saņemts par 24% vairāk pieteikumu. Kopumā šogad saņemti 348 pieteikumi, par mecenātu vārda nesējiem kļuvuši 148 studenti no LU un citām augstskolām. Stipendiātus šogad kopumā atbalstīja 35 mecenātu kopas, pateicoties kā ilggadējiem, tā jauniem mecenātiem.

The first application round for six different sets of scholarships supervised by the UL Foundation, i.e., “Ceļamaize” (”Bread for the Journey”) scholarship, Latgale “Ceļamaize” scholarship, M.M.V. Petkevičs Memorial Scholarship and Engure, Jelgava and Salaspils Municipalities’ scholarships drew 136 applications. For example, comparing 2018/2019 and 2020/2021 academic years, the number of electronic applications for “Ceļamaize” and M.M.V. Petkevičs Memorial Scholarship has doubled. Compared to last year, the number of applications received this year increased by 24%. Overall, 348 applications have been received this year, and 148 students of the UL and other universities have become bearers of the names of their patrons. 35 longtime and new patrons have contributed to the support and growth of these students.

3. Trešo gadu saņem stipendiju Viļņas Universitātes studente Deimantė Aniūkštytė studē Viļņas Universitātes Starptautisko attiecību un politikas zinātnes institūtā. Stipendiāte saka, ka Alunānu ģimenes stipendijas iegūšana viņai sniegusi iespēju pilnvērtīgāk organizēt akadēmisko darbu un iesaisti ārpusstudiju aktivitātēs, vēlmi bagātināt zināšanas, kā arī nostiprinājusi mērķi kļūt par politiskās zinātnes speciālisti, stiprinājusi ticību sev un savām spējām. Stipendijas saņemšana veicinājusi motivāciju un taisnīguma izjūtu. Deimantė mudina pieteikties stipendijām arī citus studentus: “Atcerieties, ka jūs nekad nesaņemsiet to, ko vēlaties, ja nemēģināsiet. Esmu vienmēr ticējusi, ka nav iespējams zaudēt, sekojot tam, kas liek justies lieliski. Tātad nebaidieties uzņemties risku, kļūdīties un, pats galvenais, esiet pacietīgi. Viss atnāks īstajā brīdī.”

3. Student of Vilnius University receives scholarship for the 3rd consecutive year Deimantė Aniūkštytė is studying at Vilnius University Institute of International Relations and Political Science. She emphasizes that receiving Pēteris Alunāns Family Scholarship has enabled her to better organize her academic work and promoted her involvement in extracurricular activities, it has also given her the aspiration to enrich her knowledge and to become a political scientist, as well as yielded faith in her own abilities, advanced her sense of motivation and endorsed her appreciation of fairness. Deimantė encourages other students to apply for scholarships: “Remember that you will never get what you want unless you try. I have always believed that you cannot lose by following things that make you feel great. So, do not be afraid to take a risk, to make a mistake and, most importantly, be patient. Everything will come to you at the right moment. " 9

Aizvadītajā 2020. gadā aprit 15 gadi kopš Kārļa Kaufmaņa piemiņas stipendijas dibināšanas, savukārt kopš pirmās uzņēmuma “AD VERBUM” stipendijas piešķiršanās jaunajiem pētniekiem humanitāro zinātņu jomā, topošajiem tulkotājiem un nākamajiem pirmsskolas pedagogiem aizritējuši 10 gadi, bet Ramānu ģimenes stipendija speciālās izglītības skolotājiem dibināta pirms pieciem gadiem.

2020 marks 15 years since the founding of the Kārlis Kaufmanis Memorial Scholarship, whereas 10 years have passed since the first scholarships were awarded by the company “AD VERBUM” to young researchers in the field of humanities, future translators and pre-school teachers, whereas the Ramāni Family Scholarship for special education teachers was established five years ago.

Kārlis Kaufmanis Memorial Scholarship

“Savas mīļās darba druvas – astronomijas zinātnes – turpmākai kopšanai un uzplaukšanai Latvijā,” tā testamentārajā novēlējumā Latvijas Universitātei rakstījis prof. emer. Kārlis Kaufmanis (1910–2003) – LU absolvents, senākais zināmais latviešu astronoms, pasaulē pazīstamais trimdas latvietis. Kā atzīst laikabiedri, viņš ļoti augstu vērtējis tos izglītības pamatus, ko pats guvis, mācoties dzimtenē. Atbalsta saņēmēji ir LU Fizikas, matemātikas un optometrijas fakultātes studenti, kuru pētnieciskās intereses saistītas ar astronomiju vai astrofiziku. Līdz šim K. Kaufmaņa stipendiju ieguvuši 12 LU studenti, turklāt divi no tiem atbalstu saņēmuši atkārtoti.

“For continued cultivation and prosperity of my beloved cause – astronomy science – in Latvia,” wrote Prof. emer. Kārlis Kaufmanis (1910–2003), a graduate of the UL, a senior Latvian astronomer and a world-famous Latvian in exile, to the University of Latvia in his will. As acknowledged by his contemporaries, he highly valued the fundamental education he had received while studying in his homeland. The beneficiaries are students of the University of Latvia Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry, whose research interests are related to astronomy or astrophysics. So far, K. Kaufmanis Scholarship has been awarded to 12 UL students, and two of them have received this support repeatedly.

“AD VERBUM” Scholarship

2002. gadā dibinātais ģimenes uzņēmums “AD VERBUM” Latvijas Universitātes mecenātu lokam pievienojās 2009. gadā, bet jau gadu vēlāk izveidoja pirmo stipendiju. Tulkošanas firmas dibinātāji ir LU absolventi, un kopš 2010. gada atbalsta prioritātes vienmēr bijušas saistītas ar humanitārajām vai sociālajām zinātnēm, proti, izveidotas stipendiju kopas talantīgāko studentu atbalstam teoloģijā, valodniecībā, vēsturē vai pedagoģijā. Līdz šim piešķirtas 16 stipendijas.

The family company “AD VERBUM”, established in 2002, joined the University of Latvia patronage in 2009, and established its first scholarship the very next year. The founders of the translation company are the UL graduates, and since 2010 their support priorities have always been linked to the humanities and social sciences – scholarships have been set up to support students in theology, linguistics, history and pedagogy. So far, 16 scholarships have been awarded to aspiring students.

Dzīvojot 9 000 km attālumā no savas dzimtenes, Andris Ramāns (1936) ar dzīvesbiedri Bettiju ar prieku sniedz ieguldījumu Latvijas studentu izglītībā, izaugsmē un profesijas apguvē. Andris visu mūžu aktīvi darbojies diasporas latviešu sabiedrībā, viņš ir arī LU fonda partnerorganizācijas, bezpeļņas fonda “Friends of the University of Latvia”(501(c)3) valdes loceklis jau kopš šīs organizācijas dibināšanas. 2015. gadā Ramānu ģimene izveidoja stipendiju speciālās izglītības skolotājiem, kas studē Latvijas Universitātes Pedagoģijas, psiholoģijas un mākslas fakultātē un savas darba gaitas saista ar palīdzību un atbalstu tiem, kuriem tas visvairāk nepieciešams.

Living 9 000 km away from their homeland, Andris Ramāns (1936) and his wife Betty are happy to invest in Latvian students' education, growth and professional training.

Līdz šim piešķirtas 9 stipendijas, turklāt LU absolvente Ilze Liepa atbalstu saņēmusi trīs gadus pēc kārtas. “Ar “paldies” ir par maz, lai izteiktu, cik ļoti esmu pateicīga par stipendiju. Ir teiciens: “Ja “paldies” ir ogas dzīvas, es Tev piebērtu pilnu klēpi”. Ja būtu rudens, es salasītu grozu ar mellenēm un dzērvenēm un piebērtu pilnu klēpi Ramānu ģimenei… Paldies!” pateicas I. Liepa.

Andris, an active member of the Latvian diaspora society, has also been a member of the board of the partner of the UL Foundation – the non-profit organisation “Friends of the University of Latvia” (501(c)3) since its very establishment. In 2015, the Ramāni family created a scholarship for special education teachers studying at the University of Latvia Faculty of Education, Psychology and Art and whose work involves assistance and support to those who need it most. So far, 9 scholarships have been awarded, and the UL graduate Ilze Liepa has received the support for three consecutive years. “A “thank you” is not enough to express my gratitude for the scholarship. There is a saying: “If thanks were fresh and ripe berries, I would bring you a plenty”. If it were autumn, I would pick a basketful of blueberries and cranberries to give to Ramāni family… Thank you!” I. Liepa shares her gratitude.

In 2020, UL Foundation launched a new series of monthly publications, honouring and introducing one of its patrons who extend generous support to development of education and research through projects and initiatives administered by the University of Latvia Foundation.

2020. gadā LU fonds uzsāka jaunu rubriku, ik mēnesi godinot un plašāk iepazīstinot ar vienu no patroniem, kuri nesavtīgi atbalsta izglītības attīstību un pētniecību LU fonda administrēto projektu ietvaros. Janvāra mecenāts. LMT investē vērtīgos resursos – viedos studentos un projektos. Inovācijas ir uzņēmuma darbības pamatā vai, precīzāk, – tīklā un savienojumā. Latvijā pirmais telekomunikāciju pakalpojumu sniedzējs “Latvijas Mobilais Telefons” (LMT) jau kopš 2007. gada atbalsta Latvijas Universitāti, ziedojot eksakto zinātņu projektiem un konferenču, forumu nodrošināšanai. 20

LMT prezidents un valdes priekšsēdētājs Dr.oec. Juris Binde 2007. gadā LU BVEF ieguvis ekonomikas doktora grādu uzņēmējdarbības vadībā. Viņš saka: “Neapšaubāmi, izglītība palielina konkurētspēju. Turklāt tie, kuri mācījušies universitātē, ir daudz atvērtāki jaunām idejām un skatās daudz plašāk. Arī Alberts Einšteins teicis: “mēs nevaram atrisināt problēmas ar tām metodēm, kuras šīs problēmas ir radījušas.” Mācības universitātē paplašina redzesloku un dod iespēju atrisināt izaicinājumus ar pilnīgi citām metodēm.”

Patron of January. LMT invests in valuable resources – smart students and projects. Innovations are the basis of everything the company does, or, to be more precise, of their network and connections. The first telecommunications provider in Latvia “Latvijas Mobilais Telefons” (LMT) has been supporting the University of Latvia since 2007 by donating towards the projects of exact sciences, as well as conferences and forums. The President and Chair of LMT Dr. oec. Juris Binde received a PhD in business administration at the University of Latvia Faculty of Business, Management and Economics in the 2007. In his own words, “Without a doubt, education increases the ability to be competitive. Furthermore, those, who have attended a university, are far more open to new ideas and generally have a broader outlook. As Albert Einstein has said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them”. University studies definitely expand the horizon and enable resolving new challenges with completely new methods”.

Pateicoties Amerikas latviešu labvēlībai, Latvijas Universitātes fonds saņēmis dāsnu 55 000 ASV dolāru ziedojumu jaunu stipendiju radīšanai LU Teoloģijas fakultātes studentiem. Ar bezpeļņas organizācijas “Friends of the University of Latvia” starpniecību Latvijas teologus un reliģiju zinātnes pētniekus atbalstīs Kārļa Ozoliņa – Emīla Medņa trasta fonds. Stipendija paredz atbalstu arī studijām nepieciešamā aprīkojuma iegādei un dalībai konferencēs. Tādējādi stipendija palīdz studējošajiem paaugstināt studiju kvalitāti un izmantot plašākas iespējas. “Mēs esam pateicīgi stipendijas devējiem un koordinatoriem par šo atbalstu, kas sniegts Teoloģijas fakultātes darbībai, kā arī teoloģijas un reliģijpētniecības attīstībai Latvijā,” tā pateicību pauž LU Teoloģijas fakultātes dekāne un profesore Dr. theol. D. Balode.

8. Patrons of the month Patron of February. Ozoliņi – Mediņi families will provide more light to the theologians at the UL. The generosity of American Latvians has enabled a received a generous donation of 55 000 dollars received by the University of Latvia Foundation in order to create new scholarships for the students of the UL Faculty of Theology. With the assistance of non-profit organisation “Friends of the University of Latvia”, theologians and researchers of the religious sciences from Latvia will be supported by Kārlis Ozoliņš – Emīls Mednis trust fund. The donation will also be used to purchase the equipment necessary for studies and to support conference attendance. The donation will thereby help to raise the quality of studies and to expand various work opportunities. “We are thankful to the donors and coordinators of the contribution for this support, which has been granted with the aim to assist the work of the Faculty of Theology and to advance theology and religious studies in Latvia,” conveys Dean of the faculty, Professor Dr. theol. D. Balode. 21

Stipendija radīta, atceroties LU Juridiskās fakultātes (JF) absolventes, pasniedzējas, bijušās Rīgas Juridiskās augstskolas (RJA) prorektores un Satversmes tiesas tiesneses Dr. iur. Kristīnes Krūmas (1974–2016) dzīves gājumu un devumu tiesību zinātnei. K. Krūmas dzīvesbiedrs Ivars Indāns uzsver: “Stipendiju fondi pavēra iespējas “vienkāršajai meitenei no Purvciema” ieņemt visaugstākos amatus, un tagad es ceru, ka Kristīnes Krūmas piemiņas stipendija pavērs līdzīgas iespējas “vienkāršajiem puišiem un meitenēm no Bolderājas, Rēzeknes, Saldus vai jebkuras citas Latvijas vietas”.”

8. Patrons of the month Patron of March. Inspired by Kristīne Krūma, like-minded people contribute to the memorial scholarship. The creation of memorial scholarship dedicated to Kristīne Krūma was initiated by her students – UL alumni Mārtiņš Paparinskis and Ieva Miļūna. The scholarship was established to commemorate the UL Faculty of Law graduate, teacher, Vice-Rector of the Riga Graduate School of Law, Constitutional Court Judge Kristīne Krūma, her life and contribution to legal science. Her spouse Ivars Indāns emphasizes: “Scholarships enabled this “simple girl from Purvciems” to take the highest of positions and I hope that Kristīne Krūma Memorial Scholarship will grant similar success to “simple boys and girls from Bolderāja, Rēzekne, Saldus or any other place in Latvia”.” 22

Pateicoties dāsnajam atbalstam (25 000 ASV dolāru), LU pētniekiem nodrošināta iespēja turpināt pasaules līmeņa pētniecību un iestrādes kognitīvo zinātņu jomā. “Ar šo atbalstu veicam inovatīvu un starpdisciplināru pētniecību izcilā Latvijas un LU patriota Jāņa Eglītes (1906–1988) piemiņai, kura plašās intereses un nesavtīgais raksturs ir īstena Latvijas patriota piemērs,” pauž LU Datorikas fakultātes Uztveres un kognitīvo sistēmu laboratorijas vadītājs prof. Jurģis Šķilters. Ar mecenāta Andreja Eglītes gādību un LU fonda administratīvu atbalstu tiek īstenots Latvijā pirmais starpdisciplinārais projekts, kurā eksperimentāli precīzi testē to, kā savstarpēji saistītas cilvēka dažādās maņas. “Zinātnē ir daudz pētījumu par redzi, dzirdi, tausti, garšu un smaržu, bet visai maz izpētīts, pirmkārt, kā maņas viena otru ietekmē, piemēram, kā tauste ietekmē redzi, un, otrkārt, kādas vērtējošās reakcijas, proti, kādas emocijas un ar kādu intensitāti tiek attiecinātas uz dažādo maņu saistījuma rezultātu,” tā skaidro pētījuma grupas kodols – Dr. geol. Patron of April. Andrejs Eglīte – a patriot who enhances education in the field of cognitive sciences. The generous support (25 000 USD) enables the researchers at the University of Latvia are able to continue their advanced studies in the field of cognitive science. “With this support, we implement innovative un multidisciplinary work as a way of commemorating Jānis Eglīte (1906–1988), whose wide range of interests and selfless character makes him a true example of Latvian patriot,” says Jurģis Šķilters, the chair of the Laboratory for Perceptual and Cognitive Systems at the Faculty of Computing, University of Latvia. With the support of patron Andrejs Eglīte administered by the University of Latvia Foundation, the first multidisciplinary project is being carried out in Latvia, exploring the relationship between various human senses and involving experimental precision testing. “There have been many studies about vision, hearing, touch, taste and smell, but only few studies, where, firstly, the interaction of these senses is tested, for example, establishing how touch affects vision, and, secondly, which emotions and with what intensity can be related to different senses and their interconnection,” explain the scientists forming the core of this research group – Dr. geol. Līga Zariņa, Diāna Ritere, Prof. Dr. phil. Jurģis Šķilters.

Maija mecenāts. Ar atbalstītāja gādību LU seniori iekļaujas mūsdienu sabiedrībā. Jau 10 gadus Latvijas Universitātes Senioru apvienības biedri apgūst jaunas prasmes un iegūst spilgtus iespaidus. Ar mecenāta „Japan Tobacco International” (JTI) atbalstu kopš 2010. gada tiek īstenots LU fonda pārvaldīts projekts senioru integrācijai mūsdienu mainīgajā sabiedrībā.

Patron of May. The patron assists UL seniors in integration into modern society. For the past 10 years, the members of UL Senior Association have been keeping up with rapid changes of contemporary reality learning new skills and gaining new impressions. The project dedicated to integration of seniors into modern society is administered by the UL Foundation and with the help of patron “Japan Tobacco International” (JTI) is being carried out since 2010.

LU Senioru asociācijas valde lepojas, ka nekur citur tā nerūpējas par pelnītā atpūtā aizgājušajiem darbiniekiem, atbalstot un palīdzot realizēt viņu iniciatīvas. LU Senioru kluba jeb asociācijas pirmsākumi meklējami jau deviņdesmito gadu vidū. 2003. gadā tika izveidota jauna struktūrvienība – LU Sociālais dienests, kura paspārnē nu apvienojušies ap 300 bijušo LU akadēmiskā un vispārējā personāla darbinieku, kuru darba stāžs LU bijis vismaz 25 gadi.

The board of UL Senior Association is very proud of the project and they believe that no other place offers such good care of the retired employees by supporting them and helping them realize their initiatives. The beginning of UL Senior Association or club, can be found in the mid- 1990s. Since 2003, the UL Social Services unit under its auspices brings together more than 300 retired academic and administrative employees, whose record of service at the university is longer than 25 years.

Sadarbībā ar bezpeļņas organizāciju “Friends of the University of Latvia” mecenāti dibinājuši Diplomātijas stipendiju LU Sociālo zinātņu fakultātes Politikas nodaļas maģistra studiju programmas “Diplomātija” studentiem. Diplomātijas stipendijas izveidošana cieši saistīta ar mecenātes Dagnijas Krēsliņš dzīvesgājumu. Mecanāte ieguvusi bakalaura grādu starptautiskajās attiecībās un politikas zinātnē Amerikas Universitātē, Vašingtonā. Jau studiju laikā strādājusi par palīdzi Amerikas Latviešu apvienības (ALA) birojā, aktīvi iesaistoties Vašingtonas latviešu sabiedriskajā dzīvē. Karjera bijusi saistīta ar starptautiskajām attiecībām, kā arī dažādu palīdzības programmu īstenošanu ārvalstīs, it sevišķi Latvijā.

8. Patrons of the month Patron of June. Krēsliņš family invests in the future of Latvian diplomacy. Krēsliņš family is hopeful that in the coming years the new diplomats who are recipients of the scholarship will make Latvia proud. In collaboration with nonprofit organization “Friends of the University of Latvia” the patrons have established a diplomacy scholarship at the University of Latvia Faculty of Social Sciences for the master’s students at the Department of Political Science. Creation of this scholarship is closely tied with the life of patron Dagnija Krēsliņš. She has received a bachelor’s degree in international relations and political studies at the American University in Washington D. C., USA. Already during her student years she helped at the office of American Latvian Association, actively participating in the social life of Latvians living in Washington. Her career was closely tied to international relations, as well as implementation of multiple aid projects abroad, especially in Latvia.

For several years, the University of Latvia Foundation is delighted in a successful collaboration with the municipalities of Engure, Jelgava and Salaspils, which award the best students a support throughout their entire studies.

Stipendija ir atspēriena punkts un iedrošinājums jauna ceļa sākumam. Perspektīvākie pirmā kursa studenti, kuri par mājām sauc Enguri, Jelgavu vai Salaspili, ar savas pašvaldības atbalstu var uzsākt un turpināt pamatstudijas kādā no Latvijas augstskolām bez raizēm – cītīgi mācoties un iesaistoties sabiedriskajās aktivitātēs, ir garantēta LU fonda administrētā stipendija.

The scholarship is a starting point and a reassurance in commencing a new path. The most perspective first year students either from Engure, Jelgava or Salaspils, with the support of their municipality, can abandon their immediate financial concerns and start or continue studies in any of the Latvian unversities, because by studying hard and participating in the social activities, they will receive a scholarship which is administrated by the UL Foundation.

Patron of August. The donation of Professor Vitauts Tamužs will support the technical minds of Latvia. Vitauts Tamužs (1935–2019), a professor at the University of Latvia, has donated 5 000 EUR to support young researchers in the field of material science. This prize pool is intended for those Latvian scientists who are recognized as the best authors of the international scientific journal “Mechanics of Composite Materials”. The award procedure is managed by the UL Foundation.

Mecenāts, nesen mūžībā aizgājušais Vitauts Tamužs, kuram piemitis izteikts zinātniskais un organizatoriskais dzinējspēks, pazīstams kā izcils latviešu zinātnieks, akadēmiķis, kā arī Latvijas kompozīto materiālu mehānikas zinātniskās skolas radītājs. LU profesora V. Tamuža darbi, atklājumi un izskolotie speciālisti turpina veicināt materiālu zinātnes attīstību pasaules līmenī. Profesors ilgu laiku bijis viens no vadošajiem speciālistiem pasaulē šajā nozarē, un, ņemot vērā viņa pētniecisko darbu un nozīmīgo ieguldījumu zinātnes attīstībā, prof. V. Tamužs ticis ievēlēts par goda locekli divās Eiropā prestižākajās zinātnes organizācijas – Eiropas Zinātņu akadēmijā (European Academy of Science) un Eiropas akadēmijā (Academia Europaea).

The patron, Vitauts Tamužs, who recently passed away, during his lifetime possessed a pronounced scientific and organizational drive. He was known as an excellent scientist from Latvia, academic and a creator of composite material mechanics school of Latvia. Work, discoveries and students of V. Tamužs continue to further the development of material science. To honour his scientific work and sizable contribution to the studies of composite materials, where he was considered one of the leading specialists, he was awarded a status of an honorary member at the European Academy of Sciences and Academia Europea.

The excellence scholarship “Ceļamaize” (“Bread for the Journey”) was established by the University of Latvia Foundation in 2006. Since then, many bright, young first year students, who will shape the future of our country, have received this support. One of the most generous patrons is the national company “Arčers”. It has extensively contributed to development of students for more than 10 years.

Researcher at the UL Faculty of Medicine, lector, and multiple scholarship recipient Jānis Kurlovičs donates annually, contributing to scholarships for young researchers. “Just think about it, if every alumni of UL would donate only 10 euros per year, how many young adults would we be able to support?! This makes me realise that we have a chance to make Latvia better and fairer. I believe that this chance will be embraced more and more frequently, and we will be happy about the accomplishments of young researchers,” Jānis Kurlovičs summons everyone to become a donor.

Excellence scholarship “Ceļamaize” was initiated by Latvians living in the USA as a way of supporting the students commencing their bachelor’s studies at the University of Latvia. The scholarship is awarded in open competition to the most academically capable and the most socially active secondary school graduates. In 2020, a continued support to growth of young students has been granted by “Arčers”, Anna Justīne Čakste-Rollins, Vaira Inta Pelēķis-Christopher, Andrejs Jurgens, Aina Galēja-Dravniece, as well as the campaign donors. Students who receive the scholarship “Ceļamaize” can safely begin their journey in academic world and fully devote themselves to studies.

Novembra mecenāts. 2013. gada bakalaura studiju absolventes Latvijas Universitātes Fizikas, matemātikas un optometrijas fakultātes 2013. gada optometrijas bakalaura studiju absolventes jau otro gadu pēc kārtas ar LU fonda starpniecību veica kolektīvu ziedojumu izciliem studentiem.

Meitenes ziedot motivēja Ivara Lāča apaļā jubileja – viņas nolēma godināt studiju laika iedvesmotāju un optometrijas nozares pamatlicēju Latvijā. Absolventes veica ziedojumu izcila maģistrantūras studenta stipendijai. Karola Panke atzina, ka vieniem šī bija pirmā pieredze ziedošanā, savukārt it visiem tā bija lieliska iespēja pateikties un atminēties, cik ļoti pašu studiju laikā noderēja saņemtās stipendijas. Tā bija iespēja pateikt paldies par saņemtajām zināšanām un profesijām. “LU Absolventu klubs uzskata, ka LU absolventu ziedotāju kustība ir būtisks pamats stiprākas, labākas un izcilākas LU izveidē. Katra absolventa ziedojumam ir ne vien finansiāla, bet arī simboliska jēga un nozīme, proti, cilvēks, kas reiz guvis priekšrocības no studijām, tagad pats atlīdzina, ziedojot kopējam labumam. They were prompted by the anniversary of Professor Ivars Lācis – the former students aspired to honour a great motivator who upheld their interest and commitment during their time of studies and one of the founders of the optometry research and studies in Latvia. The donation was made toward supporting a bright student of the master’s programme. One of the alumni, Karola Panke, admitted that for many it was their first time to donate and it was a great chance to express their gratitude and remember the importance of the scholarships that they had received during their time of studies. Thus, they could show appreciation of knowledge and education they have received. “The University of Latvia Alumni Club acknowledges that transformation of UL alumni into patrons is a necessary building block for a better and stronger UL. Each donation made by an alumnus carries much more than a financial meaning, – it involves a symbolic significance, since a person who has benefitted from a scholarship is reimbursing this support, enabling others to receive. This gesture deserves attention, recognition and it inspires others” says Mārtiņš Brencis, the president of UL Alumni Club.

Decembrī esam saņēmuši studentes ziedojumu Latvijas Universitātes fondam tieši Santas dzimšanas dienā – tā bija jubilāres dāvana sev, jo lielāko prieku sniedz apziņa, ka esi kādam palīdzējis.

Decembrī LU fonds saņēma ziedojumu no studentes Santas Prikules, kas savos svētkos dāsni pasniedza dāvanu fondam. “Savā dzimšanas dienā, vēlos dot arī kaut ko pretī – ziedot savai Universitātei,’’ saka Santa. Savukārt pirms 2 gadiem ilggadējs LU mecenāts Guntis Bērziņš, atzīmējot savu 80. jubileju, aicināja viesus ar LU fonda starpniecību dāvanas vietā ziedot sava vectēva – LU pirmā vēlētā rektora prof. Ernesta Felsberga vārdā nosauktajai piemiņas stipendijai. Prof. Ivars Lācis aicina ziedot LU fondam, uzsverot, ka līdztekus filantropijas attīstībai un ieradumam atbalstīt vissvarīgākais katrā ziedošanas aktā ir mērķis: “Latvija ir ceļā uz to, lai mums būtu korekta ziedošanas kultūra.”

In December, the University of Latvia Foundation received a donation that was Santa Prikule’s birthday present – it was her gift to herself, because the greatest joy is the awareness of having helped someone. “On my birthday, I wanted to give something in return – donate to my university,” says Santa. Likewise, 2 years ago, Guntis Bērziņš, a long-time University of Latvia patron, on his 80th birthday invited the guests to donate to the memorial scholarship named after his grandfather – the first elected rector of the University of Latvia, Professor Ernests Felsbergs. Professor Ivars Lācis invites to donate to the UL Foundation, he emphasizes that along with the development of philanthropy and the habit of supporting it, the most important thing in every act of donation is the goal: “Latvia is on the way to having an equitable donation culture.”

9. Pētnieki, ar kuriem lepoties Krišjānis Bušs – Krišjānis ir jurists, Latvijas Zvērinātu advokātu kolēģijas biedrs. Viņš praktizē banku un finanšu tiesības zvērinātu advokātu birojā “COBALT”, aktīvi iesaistās tiesiskās domas attīstībā Latvijā – viņa ieguldījums atspoguļojas publikācijās, semināros un konferencēs, profesionālās darba grupās, kā arī ad hoc lekcijās, kuras Krišjānis pasniedz universitātēs. Viņš palīdz studentiem sagatavoties Latvijas un starptautiska mēroga tiesas procesa izspēlēm trenera un tiesneša statusā. “Mans sapnis ir attīstīt kaimiņu kultūru – vidi, kurā kaimiņi ir savstarpēji pazīstami un viens otru sveicina, vidi, kurā viens uz otru paļaujas, kurā tiek rīkoti kaimiņu svētki un bērni spēlējas ārā. Mana Latvija sākas ar ģimeni, draugiem, kaimiņiem un vidi, kurā dzīvoju,” saka Krišjānis.

9. Researchers to be proud of Krišjānis Bušs – Krišjānis is a lawyer, a member of the Latvian Collegium of Sworn Advocates. He practices banking and finance law at the law office “COBALT”, actively engages in development of legal thought in Latvia through his publications, presentations at seminars and conferences, participation in professional working groups, and ad hoc lectures at universities. Krišjānis helps students prepare for both national and international moot court hearings as a coach and judge. “My dream is to promote neighbourhood culture – an environment, where neighbours know each other and greet one another, an environment, where people rely on one another, where neighbourhood festivals are organized and children play outside. My Latvia starts with family, friends, neighbours and the environment, in which I live,” says Krišjānis

Pētnieki, ar kuriem lepoties Oskars Smoļaks – viens no bijušajiem Latvijas Universitātes fonda stipendiātiem, šobrīd mācītājs divās draudzēs, starp citu, arī gados jaunākais mācītājs Latvijas Evaņģēliski luteriskajā Baznīcā, taču, kā pats saka, šī brīža “vissvaigākā un šobrīd visapgūstamākā dzīves loma” ir būt pat tēti, jo abi ar sievu Santu sagaidījuši pirmdzimto. “Šobrīd kalpoju kā mācītājs divās draudzēs – Rīgas Vecajā Sv. Ģertrūdes un Bolderājas draudzē. Tas nozīmē, ka ikdienā sastopos ar cilvēkiem gan individuāli, gan dažādās draudzes aktivitātēs.” “Svarīgi panākt līdzsvaru starp to, ko dodu no sevis, kalpojot kā mācītājs, un ko dodu savai ģimenei. Tas prasa rūpīgi plānot laiku, respektēt savas robežas un iespējas,” saka Oskars.

Researchers to be proud of Oskars Smoļaks – one of the former University of Latvia Foundation scholarship holders, currently serves as a pastor in two congregations and is the youngest pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia, however, in his own words, presently “the most recent role in life to be mastered” is that of a father, since Oskars and his wife Santa have become parents to their firstborn. “At the moment I serve as a pastor in two congregations – in Riga St. Gertrude Old Church and Bolderāja. Consequently, in my everyday life I very often meet people both individually and during different congregational activities.” “It’s important to be in balance between what I give of myself serving as a pastor, and what I give to my family. That demands carefully planned time, as well as respecting my limits and capabilities,” says Oskars.

Pētnieki, ar kuriem lepoties Didzis Berenis – LU fonda stipendiāts, pētnieks Didzis Berenis izstrādā pētījumu, kas padziļinās zināšanas optimālu pastāvīgo magnētu maisītāju un jaunu magnētiskās hidrodinamikas iekārtu izstrādē. Didzis Berenis ieguvis LU fonda administrēto “Mikrotīkls” stipendiju doktorantiem eksakto un medicīnas zinātņu jomā, lai izpētītu rotējošu pastāvīgo magnētu maisītāju ierosinātā šķidra metāla plūsmu 20 tonnu alumīnija krāsnīs. Kā skaidro jaunais pētnieks, magnetohidrodinamikas (MHD) un turbulentu plūsmu pētījumiem ir sena vēsture, taču to aprēķini industriāliem mērķiem sagādā grūtības, pat strādājot ar jaudīgiem datoriem.

Researchers to be proud of Didzis Berenis – a UL Foundation scholarship holder and researcher is working on a study that will enhance the understanding of optimal design of permanent magnet mixers and new magnetofluid dynamic devices. Didzis Berenis has received the UL Foundation-administered “Mikrotīkls” doctoral scholarship in the field of exact and medical sciences to research the fluid metal flow in 20 ton aluminum furnaces induced by rotating permanent magnet mixers. As the young researcher explains, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and turbulent flow research has a considerable history, nonetheless, the calculations for industrial purposes prove difficult even when working with powerful computers.

Pētnieki, ar kuriem lepoties Ģirts Zāģeris – šobrīd Ģirta profesionālā dzīve veltīta mācībām visdažādākajās izpausmēs – viņš māca fiziku skolā, strādā zinātnē LU Skaitliskās modelēšanas institūtā, vada Jauno fiziķu skolu, piedalās projektā “Skola 2030”, kā arī pats studē LU Fizikas, matemātikas un optometrijas fakultātes doktorantūrā. “Dzīvoju bez konkrētiem, precīziem mērķiem – gribu darīt to, kas man patīk, un nopelnīt gana, lai varētu dzīvot komfortabli. Man ir viens mērķis, kurš ir tikai aptuvens – gribu dzīvot gudrākā sabiedrībā. Droši vien tāpēc strādāju skolā, darbojos Jauno fiziķu skolā un daru citas tamlīdzīgas lietas,” saka Ģirts.

Researchers to be proud of Ģirts Zāģeris – currently Ģirts’ professional life is devoted to studies of various forms – he teaches physics at school, does scientific research at the UL Institute of Numerical Modelling, heads the Young Physicists School, participates in the project “Skola 2030” (“School 2030”), and completes post-graduate studies at the UL Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry. “I live without defined, precise goals – I want to do what I like, and earn enough to live comfortably. My only goal, which is approximately defined – I want to live in a smarter society. Probably that is the reason why I work in a school and manage the Young Physicists School, and do other related things,” says Ģirts.

9. Researchers to be proud of Inga Pudža – a scholar who has confirmed her talent and dedication in the field of physics. Committed postgraduate of UL Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry, recipient of numerous UL Foundation scholarships Inga approaches the finishing line to become a promising doctor of physics. Inga equals excellence. Since her undergraduate days her time is spent at the UL Institute of Solid State Physics. Both undergraduate and graduate degrees in physics at the UL “physmaths” (the friendly nickname of the faculty) have been awarded with honors. With the help of her patron “Mikrotīkls” and UL Foundation’s administrative support, the young scientist has been able to produce highly valuable results, which open new possibilities in the field of solid state physics.

9. Pētnieki, ar kuriem lepoties Kristaps Saršūns šobrīd veic darbu zinātniskajā laboratorijā, pasniedz laboratorijas darbus un seminārus, taču par saviem hobijiem sauc velobraukšanu, mūziku, sportu, kur vislielāko interesi izraisa futbols. Galvenais pētījuma mērķis un rezultāts ir iegūt savienojumus ar uzlabotām fizikālķīmiskajām īpašībām, kas varētu būt organiskie gaismekļi vai zāļu vielas. Pētījums palīdzētu pētnieka kolēģiem – zinātniekiem nostabilizēt hipotēzi par citiem šķīdumiem un to veidošanos faktoriem. Ja hipotēze apstiprinātos un spētu iegūt organiskos materiālus ar šīm fizikālķīmiskajām īpašībām, tiem būtu plašs pielietojuma spektrs tādās nozarēs kā farmācija un medicīna, bioķīmija, kā arī ražošanas industrijā.

9. Researchers to be proud of Kristaps Saršūns currently works in a scientific laboratory, supervises students’ lab work and speaks in seminars. His hobbies include cycling, music and sports, of which he is most enthusiastic about soccer. The main goal and result of his research is to produce compounds with improved physiochemical properties, which might be organic luminescent materials or therapeutic substances. This research would allow scientists to further their hypothesis about other substances and their formative factors. If the hypothesis would prove to be true and it were possible to produce these organic materials with said properties, they would have a wide range of applications in many fields such as pharmacy, medicine, biochemistry, as well as in the production industry.

9. Pētnieki, ar kuriem lepoties Bernards Kudiņš studē vācu filoloģiju maģistrantūrā LU Humanitāro zinātņu fakultātē. Īstajā laikā satiekot patiesus šīs pētniecības nozares entuziastus, arī paša aizrautība ar darbu šajā jomā arvien aug. Bernarda pētījuma mērķis ir veikt pagriezienu episko tekstu izpētē un rast nebijušu pieeju to analīzē. Ar šo pētījumu Bernards cer sasniegt vairākus mērķus: gūt lielāku skaidrību par dzejas valodas (un autorvalodas) būtību, ar mūsdienīgu metožu palīdzību izstrādāt stratēģijas, ko varētu likt lietā poētisko tekstu tulkotāji un Bernards pats, latviski tulkojot “Nībelungu dziesmu” un sensakšu “Hēliandu”, mūsdienīgot un attīstīt skatījumu E. Zīversa pārlaicīgās teorijas ritma un melodijas laukā kā arī dot līdz šim nebijušu virzību episko tekstu tapšanas procesa un autorības pētījumiem, noskaidrojot noteiktu valodas līdzekļu izmantojuma īpatnības un to robežas tekstā.

9. Researchers to be proud of Bernards Kudiņš studies at the UL Faculty of Humanities, master’s programme of German philology. His inspiration was engendered by meeting the right people “with fire in their eyes” – just as enthusiastic as himself. The goal of his study is to make a turn in the research of epic texts and to find a new approach to analysis of this material. Bernards hopes to achieve multiple goals: to obtain a better clarity of the essence of poetic language (and author languages in general), and with the help of modern methods create strategies, which could be used by poetry text translators and Bernards himself to translate “The Song of the Nibelungs” and the Old Saxon epic “Heliand” into Latvian, expanding and updating E. Zīverss’ theory in the field of rhythm and melody, introducing a modern view– point, as well as to give a new direction to research of the process and authorship of epic texts by determining the peculiarities of expressions used and their limitation in the text. 38

Pētnieki, ar kuriem lepoties Guntars Kitenbergs – 2007./2008. akadēmiskajā gadā Guntars Kitenbergs, vēl mācoties Latvijas Universitātes Fizikas, matemātikas un optometrijas fakultātes 1. kursā, ar LU fonda starpniecību saņēma Kristapa Morberga stipendiju. Pēc vairākiem gadiem profesionālās izaugsmes vieta nav mainījusies, taču šobrīd pētniekam tajā ir cita loma – Fizikas nodaļas vadītājs. Šobrīd Guntars veic pēcdoktorantūras pētījumu (#PostDocLatvia) par mikroplūsmām mazos izmēros mīkstās vidēs, kurām ir magnētiskas īpašības. Eksperimentāli mēģina nomērīt dažādu mikroskopisku objektu kustību, lai pārbaudītu, vai iespējams izskaidrot to uzvedību un piedāvāt pielietojumus nākotnes tehnoloģijām bioloģijā un medicīnā.

Researchers to be proud of Guntars Kitenbergs – in the academic year 2007/2008 , during this first year of undergraduate studies at the University of Latvia Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry he won the UL Foundation-administered Kristaps Morbergs Scholarship. After many years, the place of professional growth has remained the same, it is the capacity of the researcher that has changed – today, he heads the Department of Physics. Currently Guntars implements postgraduate research (#PostDocLatvia) dedicated to microflows in soft matter, involving magnetic properties. Researcher aims to experimentally measure the movement of different microscopic objects, to test whether their behaviour can be explained to propose applications for future technologies in biology and medicine.

2019. gada nogalē LU Studentu padomes Gada balva – Gada studentes tituls tika piešķirts LU Humanitāro zinātņu fakultātes Vācu filoloģijas maģistra studiju 1. kursa studentei un divkārtējai LU fonda stipendiātei Signei Viškai.

At the end of 2019, University of Latvia Student Council’s annual award – the title “Student of the Year” was awarded to UL Faculty of Humanities German philology master’s programme 1st year student and twofold UL Foundation scholarship recipient Signe Viška.

Signes ceļš pie vācu valodas ir apzināti neapzināts – ar šo valodu viņa uzaugusi. Maza būdama, skatījās dažnedažādas vācu pārraides un šo to arī iemācījās. “Skolā nopietnākas vācu valodas apguves ļoti trūka, lai gan mācījāmies angļu valodu un vēlāk arī krievu valodu, ko izvēlējos vecāku ietekmē, jo viņi teica: “Vācu valodu tu jau proti, ņem krievu valodu”, kam zināmā mērā varēja piekrist. Vidusskolā biju izlēmusi saistīt dzīvi ar vācu valodu, tāpēc gatavojos eksāmenam ar fakultatīvo nodarbību palīdzību,” stāsta Signe.

Signe’s road to the German language has been consciously unconscious – she grew up with this language. In childhood she watched various German broadcasts and learned different things. “At school I lacked more serious German studies, even though we learned English language and later – Russian language, which I chose following the wish of my parents, who said: “You already know German language, better take Russian language”, and to some extent I agree with that. As I entered secondary school, I had decided to dedicate my efforts to German language, therefore I studied for the exam with the help of elective lessons at school,” recalls Signe.

“Manuprāt, cilvēki spēj novērtēt, ja kāds dara to, kas tiešām patīk, tam veltot visas pūles un enerģiju. Liekas, tieši to arī manī saskatīja, jo darbojos ar literatūru, valodu, tulkošanu, dažādiem kultūras projektiem – tas mani dara mazliet traku, bet arī ļoti laimīgu. Nesen kādā sarunā teicu, ka – it īpaši pēdējā laikā – dzīves jēgas sajūtu dod literatūra un, manā gadījumā, arī vācu valoda. Domāju, ka šī dzīves jēgas un dzirksts sajūta ir vismaz nedaudz pamanāma, tādēļ arī man tika piešķirts gods kļūt par Gada studenti,” Signe skaidro savu viedokli par to, kāpēc viņa saņēmusi Gada studentes nomināciju.

“In my opinion, people appreciate it if someone does the thing that he or she really enjoys and puts all the effort and energy into it. It seems that is exactly what people noticed about me, because I work in the fields of literature, language, translation, various cultural projects – all this makes me a little crazy but also very happy. Recently, in some conversation, I said that lately literature and, in my case, also German gives me the feeling of purpose in life. I think that this feeling and spark is at least slightly noticeable, therefore, I was honoured with “Student of the Year” nomination.” Signe shares her opinion regarding the reasons for “Student of the Year” nomination.

Achievements in research More accurate diagnostics, more successful fight against cancer With the support of the University of Latvia Foundation and the patron “Mikrotīkls”, researchers are implementing the project “Development and introduction of innovative methods in clinical practice for the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumours using molecularly targeted radionuclides produced in Latvia”.

Sasniegumi pētījumos Precīzāka diagonostika, sekmīgāka cīņa pret vēzi Ar Latvijas Universitātes fonda un mecenāta “Mikrotīkls” atbalstu LU pētnieki vadošās pētnieces Guntas Ķizānes vadībā īsteno projektu “Inovatīvu metožu attīstīšana un ieviešana klīniskajā praksē ļaundabīgo audzēju diagnostikai un terapijai, izmantojot Latvijā ražotus molekulāri mērķētus radionuklīdus”. Projekts tapa uz sadarbības un iekārtu koplietošanas pamata – vienai no Latvijas klīnikām bija germānija gallija ģenerators, un šī klīnika sadarbojās ar Jūras medicīnas centru, kura rīcībā, savukārt, ir pozitronu emisijas tomogrāfijas (PET) iekārta. Fluors kā radionuklīds ļauj īstenot salīdzinoši vienkāršāku diagnosticēšanas metodi, savukārt citos gadījumos, piemēram, prostatas vēža diagnostikā, izmanto germānija galliju. Šie savienojumi nodrošina daudzkārt lielāku precizitāti, tie ļauj atklāt, kur slēpjas vēža šūnas. Kad šī diagnosticēšanas stadija paveikta, nepieciešams lutēcijs, kas vēža šūnas iznīcina. Lai šos procesus izpētītu, projekta ietvaros tika veikti daudzi eksperimenti. Jāsaprot, kā jākalibrē gallija devas un virkne citu jautājumu. 42

The project is based on cooperation and sharing of scientific equipment – one of the Latvian clinics had a germanium gallium generator, and this clinic cooperated with the Latvian Maritime Medical Center, which, in turn, has a positron emission tomography (PET) device. Fluoride as a radionuclide permits to implement a relatively simpler method of diagnosis, while in other cases, such as prostate cancer diagnostics, germanium gallium is used. These compounds yield a much greater accuracy – they enable indication of cancer cell location. Once this stage of diagnosis is completed, lutetium is needed to destroy the cancer cells. In order to study these processes, many experiments were performed in the framework of the project. It is necessary to understand how to calibrate gallium doses and a number of other issues and questions.

Vainšeļbaumas pētījums Entuziastiskā Latvijas Universitātes fonda stipendiāte un LU Bioloģijas fakultātes doktorante Nineļa Miriama Vainšeļbauma ir spējīga jaunā pētniece, kas pievērsusies ļaundabīgo audzēju izzināšanai molekulārā līmenī. Viņas centieni rast risinājumu agresīvās slimības apkarošanai vainagojušies panākumiem, proti, novērota vēl līdz šim neaprakstīta parādība vēža šūnu dalīšanās procesā.

“Mans pētījums koncentrējas galvenokārt uz hromosomu un genomu skaita, precīzāk, ploīdijas, izmaiņām, it īpaši tā saucamo triploīdiju – stāvokli, kad vēža šūnā ir novērojams pusotru reizi lielāks hromosomu skaits nekā normālajā jeb diploīdajā šūnā. Proti, triploīdām šūnām ir ap 69 (58–80) hromosomu, lai gan normāli vajadzētu būt 46 hromosomām. Mūsu iepriekš iegūtie un zinātniskajā rakstā nopublicētie dati liecina, ka vēža triploīdija, kas saistīta ar paaugstināto slimības agresivitāti un pacientu letalitāti, ir nevis nejaušas hromosomu iegūšanas un zaudēšanas sekas, bet gan dzimumvairošanās mehānismiem līdzīgo pre-programmēto pilngenoma izmaiņu rezultāts. Tai ir adaptīva loma audzēja izdzīvošanā un turpmākā augšanā. Balstoties uz šiem rezultātiem, Latvijas pētnieciskā grupa nolēmusi turpināt pilnā vēža genoma izmaiņu izpēti. Veiksmīga turpmākā pētnieciskā darba gadījumā tā rezultāti var potenciāli atspoguļoties arī grūti ārstējamo audzēju diagnostikā un terapijā,” stāsta Nineļa.

Genetics and evolution of malignancies. Research of UL doctoral student Nineļa M. Vainšeļbauma Enthusiastic scholarship recipient of the University of Latvia Foundation and doctoral student at the University of Latvia Faculty of Biology Nineļa Miriama Vainšeļbauma is a very capable young researcher, who has focused on the study of malignancies at the molecular level. Her efforts to find a solution to the aggressive disease have been successful – a new phenomenon has been observed in the cancer cell division process. “My research focuses mainly on changes in the number of chromosomes and genomes, more precisely, ploidy changes, especially the so called triploidy – a condition in which a cancer cell has one and a half times more chromosomes than a normal or diploid cell. Triploid cells have about 69 (58–80) chromosomes, although they should normally have 46 chromosomes. Our previous data, published in a scientific article, suggests that the cancer triploidy, associated with the increased disease aggression and patient lethality, is not the result of accidental chromosome acquisition and loss, but the result of pre-programmed full-genome changes similar to the mechanisms of sexual reproduction. It plays an adaptive role in tumor survival and further growth. Based on these results, the Latvian research team has decided to continue researching changes in the entire cancer genome. In case of successful further research, its results could potentially be reflected in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult-to-treat tumors.” comments Ninela (Nineļa). 43

11. Sasniegumi pētījumos LU un BMC pētnieki noskaidrojuši baktēriju mikronodalījumu 3D struktūru un pašsavākšanās principus. Latviešu pētnieki pirmoreiz pasaulē fiksējuši baktēriju šūnas sastāvdaļas – mikronodalījumu, sauktu arī par mikrokompartmentiem, 3D struktūrattēlu. Ar Latvijas Universitātes fonda mecenāta “Mikrotīkls” atbalstu LU un Latvijas Biomedicīnas pētījumu un studiju centra (BMC) pētnieki noskaidrojuši principus, pēc kādiem šie mikronodalījumi organizējas, un vizualizējuši to 3D struktūru. Atklājums ir publicēts augsta līmeņa zinātniskajā žurnālā “Nature Communications”. LU un BMC pētnieku komanda sniegusi vērtīgu ieguvumu fundamentālajā zinātnē. “Nature Communications” atvērtās pieejas publikācijā pirmoreiz parādīts, ka centrālais enzīms – holīna liāze – ir faktors, kas nodrošina pārējo trīs enzīmu iepakošanu. “Līdz šim iespējamība, ka tieši tā notiek enzīmu iepakošana mikronodalījumos, bija aprakstīta teorētiski, taču nebija praktiski parādīta, ka tik tiešām iepakošanas jeb enkapsulācijas procesam raksturīga noteikta hierarhija. Proti, katram enzīmam ir sava, neatdalāma loma veiksmīgā iepakošanas procesā. Tāpat arī mums pirmajiem izdevās novērot konkrētajam mikronodalījuma veidam unikālu, līdz šim neraksturotu struktūru,” gandarīts BMC zinātniskais asistents, LU Bioloģijas fakultātes doktora grāda pretendents Mg. biol. Gints Kalniņš, kuram pētījums ir daļa no promocijas darba struktūrbioloģijas jomā. 44

UL and BMC researchers have found out the 3D structure and self-assembly principles of bacterial microcompartments. Latvian researchers are the first to have recorded the components of bacterial cells – microcompartments, 3D structure. With the support of the University of Latvia Foundation’s patron “Mikrotīkls”, researchers from University of Latvia and the Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre (BMC) have clarified the principles, according to which these microcompartments are organized and have visualized their 3D structure. The discovery is published in the highly acclaimed scientific journal “Nature Communications”. The team of UL and BMC researchers has provided valuable contribution to the fundamental science. “Nature Communications” open approach publication for the first time shows that the central enzyme – choline lyase – is the factor that provides encapsulation for the other three enzymes. “Until now, the possibility that this is exactly how the enzymes are encapsulated in the microcompartments has been described theoretically, however, it has not been shown in practice that the packaging or encapsulation process is indeed characterized by a certain hierarchy. Each enzyme has its own inseparable role in the packaging process. We were also the first to observe a unique and until now unknown structure for the type of microcompartment,” satisfied is the BMC research assistant, UL Faculty of Biology doctoral candidate Mg. biol. Gints Kalniņš, – the current research is a part of his doctoral thesis in the field of structural biology.

11. Sasniegumi pētījumos LU doktorants izstrādā inovatīvu tehnoloģiju alumīnija ražošanai. Latvijas Universitātes Fizikas, matemātikas un optometrijas fakultātes doktorants un LU fonda stipendiāts Reinis Baranovskis strādā pie vēl neredzētas tehnikas, kas ļautu optimizēt šobrīd novecojušo alumīnija ražošanas posmu un būtiski ietekmēt visu metalurģijas nozari. Doktoranta pētījumu virziens nesen tika novērtēts ar vērā ņemamu stipendiju, ļaujot pētniecisko darbību realizēt vēl augstākā kvalitātē. Latvijas Universitātes Zinātņu mājas pagrabstāvā – vienā no Reiņa Baranovska darba vietām – notiek mazāk bīstami eksperimenti, taču Salaspilī, LU Fizikas institūta telpās, zinātnieks strādā ar simtiem grādu karstu alumīniju un sprādzienbīstamo nātriju. Doktorantam ikdienas darbā nākas būt piesardzīgam, izmantojot bīstamas vielas: „Jā, darbs ir bīstams, bet mēs kā zinātnieki esam kvalificēti, lai veiktu tādus darbus. Es pat nevaru izcelties uz kolēģu fona, kas regulāri strādā ar lieliem nātrija tilpumiem. Nātrijs, saskaroties ar gaisu, deg, bet ar ūdeni – eksplodē. Ir pasākumi, ko var veikt, lai šos riskus mazinātu, – gan personāla kvalifikācijā, gan infrastruktūrā un aprīkojumā – mums ir aizsargtērpi, kas iztur 500 grādu karstumu, citi speciāli rīki.”

UL doctoral student develops an innovative technology for aluminium production. Reinis Baranovskis, a doctoral student at the UL Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Optometry and the UL Foundation scholarship recipient, is working on unprecedented technology to optimize the currently obsolete stage of aluminium production. It could make a significant impact on the entire metallurgical industry. The direction of the doctoral student’s research was recently awarded a significant scholarship, allowing the research activity to be carried out in an even higher quality. In the basement of University of Latvia House of Science – one of Reinis Baranovskis’ workplaces – less dangerous experiments take place, whereas in Salaspils, in the premises of the University of Latvia Institute of Physics, the scientist works with hundreds of degrees hot aluminium and explosive sodium. The doctoral student has to be careful in his daily work when using dangerous substances: “Yes, the work is precarious, but we as scientists are qualified to do such work. I can’t even stand out among the colleagues who regularly work with large volumes of sodium. Sodium burns when in contact with air and explodes in contact with water. There are things that can be done to minimize these risks, – both in the qualification of the staff and in the infrastructure and equipment – we have protective clothing that can withstand 500 degree heat, as well as other special tools.”

Pētnieks, pasniedzējs, vadītājs – tās ir tikai dažas no fizikas doktora Ivara Lāča lomām profesionālajā darbībā. Vairāk nekā 40 gadus profesors saistīts ar LU, astoņus no tiem – rektora amatā. Par profesora dzīvesgājumu un karjeru nu izdota grāmata, un tā ir astotais sējums Latvijas Universitātes rektoriem veltītajā grāmatu sērijā.

Researcher, lecturer, leader – these are just a few roles in the professional endeavours of the PhD in physics Ivars Lācis. He has been affiliated with the University of Latvia for more than 40 years, 8 of them as its rector.

“Kas ir Ivars Lācis? Ja pats sev uzdodu šo jautājumu, tad rodas problēma, jo tas, droši vien, ir tas, kas es esmu, un lielā mērā tas, kas es gribētu būt. Šie divi man jūk kopā, un es nekad nesaprotu, kurš īsti esmu es,” stāstīja pats I. Lācis. A book, reflecting on the life and career of the professor, has been published recently, and this is the 8th volume in the book series dedicated to the rectors of the University of Latvia. “Who is Ivars Lācis? If I were to ask myself this question, then a problem would arise, as that is probably who I am and, to great extent, whom I would like to be. I confuse these two and can never understand which one of them I am,” says I. Lācis himself. The professor is grateful to his family, colleagues and other teachers and participants of his life for everything that he has experienced. “I am proud of my university, in which I have spent 78% of my life, as well as of Latvia, which I have helped to become what it is now with small deeds here and there.” The contents of the book have been structured as a narrative in which Ivars Lācis’ family and peers share their reflections about him as a father, colleague, professor and rector. Thanks to the forthcomingness of colleagues at the University of Latvia, the volume comprises memories and reflections, outlining the portrait of rector’s personality and shows his style of management, as well as the challenges posed to the university at the turn of the century. The content of the book features a rich selection of photographs from Professor Lācis’ private archive and from the photoarchive of UL. Furthermore, his personality is characterised by documents that have been amassed in Ivars Lācis’ personal file at the UL: applications, orders, copies of other documents.

Reviewing the phenomenon of philanthropy in its historical aspect, it clearly reveals a correlation between the increase in the number of patrons and a rapid development of science, art and other spheres. Donations and selfless support has led to these positive outcomes. Professor Ivars Lācis emphasizes that besides the development of philantropy and the habit to support, the most significant aspect in the act of donation is the goal. “Latvia is on the way to having an equitable donation culture,” highlighted the UL Foundation Chair of the Board.
