PROJECT STATEMENT GOALS
LOCATION Barrio Nopal Park is designed to mitigate flooding issues by implementing different water management strategies such as basins, swales and curb cuts to retain as much rainwater and stormwater as possible. The collection of water creates an opportunity to design active and learning spaces that the students and families at the neighborhood can benefit from.
1. Mitigate Flooding The design has 5 basins and a series of swales to control flooding along Aragon and El Vira road. Also, there are curb cuts that allow runoff water to infiltrate into the site and minimize stormwater along on the streets.
VA
The proximity to Challenger Middle School opens an opportunity to be an educational driven park. Water retention creates areas to have arboretums in which people can learn about water management and nature. At the same time, the community center is a learning tool as the building offers a classroom and a computer lab for after school hours.
3. Create Active Outdoor Spaces The design contains a track linking the entire site in an outdoor environment that connects the users with nature. With the inclusion of a playground and a splash pad families in the community have the opportunity to enjoy a safe evening within walking distance in the neighborhood.
