Net Zero Water

Community Garden

Heat Island Effect

Achieve net zero status through utilization of rainwater for indoor use and gray water for outdoor use

Provide a space for local food vendors

Reduce heat island effect by introducing native vegetation and shading canopy

Green Infrastructure

Revitalization

Modification

Utilize green infrastructure to infiltrate and filter stormwater

Turning Navajo Wash into a green corridor proposing a pedestrian and biker friendly route

Retrofit buildings on site to apply to community’s culture and needs

PROJEC T STATEMENT

T his project is designed to benefit the Mountain View Neighborhood by revitalizing the Navajo Wash to a pedestrian and biker friendly route while maintaining vehicular access, and by retrofitting the buildings on the site to apply to the community’s cultural needs. In order to do so, the project goals propose net zero status through the utilization of rain water for indoor use, and gray water for outdoor use. This project also will attempt to reduce the heat island effect of the sites by introducing green infrastructure, trees, and other native vegetation to the three sites.

Site Location The site of Navajo Road and 1st Avenue has little to no vegetation. Navajo Road is the nearest wash that leads to the Rillito River. However, Navajo Road is paved and thus impervious, rendering all water on the site useless and damaging as it is led away. A majority of the built environment is commercial and residential, one story buildings. The average height of buildings is 15’ and the average square footage for residential is nearly 2600 sq ft, and the average “big box” commercial unit is approximately 13,600 sq ft. 7

SITE F LOODING PROBLEMS

A B 2

1

3

C

4

1

Lack of Sidewalks: There is limited pedestrian circulation due to a lack of access.

2

Ponding: The inefficient design of the parking lot creates pooling.

3

Water Damage: Tucson’s occasional humidity causes damage to asphalt when juxtaposed to Tucson’s typically arid temperature.

4

10

Unkept Driveway: The plaza’s driveways are unkept and allowed to succumb to damage.

COMMUNIT Y INTERVIEW

Walmart Neighborhood Market

•Consider safety! More lights! There is safety in numbers! •What is efficient in terms of program and doesn’t take a lot of time or money? •We want work trade training on site! •We want a food truck pod! •Consider the flow of people and the flow of water from 1st Ave and Navajo Rd to Amphi Neighborhood Park.

•We want fast food! •We love the barbershop. •There is a lot of homeless here. •The building has a bad reputation.

•We want Wal-Mart to expand! •The buildings have a bad reputation. Tear them down!

•We want a gym! •We would rather have the building replaced. •This is not a safe area, my customers don’t like to come here.
