Brighton SU is a member of the National Union of Students, which represents over five million students in the UK. The union is run for the benefit of students, by students like you. Brighton SU Council is formed of student officers elected by you and is the formal link between students and the university. Each officer is responsible for an area of the student experience: democracy, wellbeing, academic, campus and community, and activities and events.

www.brighton.ac.uk/sportbrighton We also support elite athletes at national and Olympic-level through sports scholarships, the sports science consultancy and our status as a satellite centre for the English Institute of Sport. More information about our scholarships is available at www.brighton.ac.uk/ money.

A network of course representatives makes sure that feedback on the learning, teaching and facilities on your course is used by the university and the union so that students’ needs and expectations are met. You can volunteer to take on one of these roles, or you get involved in student campaigns. www.brightonsu.com

LOCATIONS AND CAMPUSES A BRILLIANT PLACE TO LIVE The University of Brighton is part of a forward-thinking beach-side city that’s loved for being original and eclectic. It’s a welcoming and exciting place to be. You’ll find us at locations across Brighton, as well as along the coast in Eastbourne – wherever you’re based you’ll be near the beach and countryside, and within easy reach of London, mainland Europe and beyond.

Brighton Pride 11

BRIGHTON Brighton is waiting to be explored, it stretches along 5.4 miles of picturesque pebble beach and lined with clubs, charming galleries, shops, volleyball and basketball courts. The city of Brighton & Hove is proud to be featured in Lonely Planet's list of 10 cities with brilliant beaches (alongside Cape Town, Rio and Sydney). Our Falmer, Grand Parade and Moulsecoomb campuses are based here.

Buses are plentiful in Brighton and will get you easily between university and town, and between campuses. They are named after notable people from the city – look out for Rudyard Kipling or Ben Sherman. Amongst the street art around Brighton, you can count the rock icons on the side of the Prince Albert – one of Brighton’s live music venues – and see a Banksy or two.

12

Every August, the city is inundated with mods on scooters, as the Brighton mod weekender recreates the style of Quadrophenia within its iconic setting. Along with the distinctive Regency architecture that lines the seafront, the extravagant Royal Pavilion is one of Brighton’s most famous landmarks. Commissioned by King George IV, its colourful history contributed to Brighton’s reputation as a seaside pleasure resort. Pavilion Gardens is a popular summer spot and in winter hosts a pop-up ice-rink. At Christmas, Brighton & Hove’s row of beach huts becomes an advent calendar, with a hut per day decorated and opened up by its owner for viewing. The Brighton Pride Community Parade, a high-energy mix of celebration and campaigning, is the UK’s biggest LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) event and wraps the city in rainbows every August.

Brighton’s mix of cultures, nationalities and religions means that you’ll be at home here no matter what country or background you’re from.

The annual Paddle Round the Pier festival is the ultimate expression of Brighton beach life, celebrating the best in water, street and urban sports.

Brighton Fashion Week is a rare chance to see some of the future stars of fashion away from London.

There are more than 400 independent shops, cafes and entertainment venues in Brighton’s North Laine area, as well as high street shopping at the 80-store Churchill Square shopping centre.

May is a great time of year to be in Brighton. The city buzzes as the Great Escape, a three-day, 300-band, new music showcase shifts into the Brighton Festival and Fringe, England’s biggest arts festival.

Premier League football club Brighton & Hove Albion, play their home matches at the American Express Community Stadium adjacent to our Falmer campus.

I chose to study at Brighton because it is a beautiful place full of life and colour. The city is great, the university is very stimulating, open and bright and there are always lots of people around and the staff here are amazing. The advice I give to anyone who is thinking of applying for this course at Brighton is to just do it! Pack your bags, come here and see how cool Brighton Uni is for yourselves! EASTBOURNE Eastbourne is known for being sunny*, friendly and relaxed, and almost every place you need to go is around 15 minutes away on foot – the beach, the town centre or the beautiful hills of the South Downs National Park.

Subjects taught at our Eastbourne campus include physiotherapy and sport science and – with the beach and the countryside being close by – there’s an emphasis on the outdoors, fitness and wellbeing. Facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, artificial outdoor pitch and dance studio.

14

*The sunniest place in Britain is a hotly contested title – front-runners include Eastbourne and Hastings, which both hold the UK record for the sunniest month – 383.9 hours sunshine in July 1911

35

MINUTES FROM BRIGHTON BY TRAIN

I chose to study in the UK largely because when I worked in China I met many British people, some of whom I had remained in contact with. My research found that the University of Brighton offered the best course for my needs and I do not regret this decision. Living in Eastbourne has been fun – it holds wonderful memories of the beautiful countryside and friendly people.

YAN TING HUANG, INTERNATIONAL TOURISM MANAGEMENT MSC

Eastbourne has a close-knit university community and students have their own cosy on-campus pub, the Starting Gate. Besides the modern Towner Contemporary Art Gallery there are also four theatres in Eastbourne and arts and music events throughout the year.

Regular continental markets feature along the seafront. One of the biggest free extreme sports festivals in the UK, Beach Life Festival is an adventure-filled weekend held on the seafront, featuring land and waterbased outdoor activities. A great way to get your adrenaline pumping!

PROFESSIONALLY ACCREDITED COURSES IN ARCHITECTURE AND PRODUCT DESIGN

EXHIBIT YOUR WORK THROUGHOUT THE COURSE

THRIVING DESIGN COMMUNITY WORKING IN DEDICATED STUDIOS WITH SPECIALIST EQUIPMENT

ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN At Brighton we provide a stimulating studio-led environment: our focus is on making sure you leave us equipped with the research, design and professional skills needed to make an immediate impact on your chosen profession.

PUTTING LEARNING INTO PRACTICE

Architecture and Interior Architecture students share studios, workshops and learning spaces, simulating a real-world practice and encouraging the free flow of ideas. In years 2 and 3 architecture students choose a themed studio, each supported by two tutors with a dedicated workspace. Product design students work in their own studios with access to specialist facilities including 3D printers, wood, metal and welding workshops, finish room, prototyping laboratories, simulators, laser scanners, wind tunnels, plasma and laser cutters and a five-axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) workshop. Our product design courses include a placement year. Students have undertaken placements at Adidas, L’Oreal, Triumph, the Body Shop, Puma and Mini Cooper. Others have pursued their own entrepreneurial projects.

REALISING YOUR POTENTIAL

• Our students learn in many settings, in studios, classrooms and workshops, as well as on field trips, and from a variety of staff, including visiting professionals who share their experience.

24 24

• Product designers develop a profound understanding of materials, manufacturing, engineering and ergonomics while exploring their own interests, gaining hands-on experience by creating and testing designs. • Planning your career will be an integral part of your studies and, for RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architecture)accredited courses, our links with RIBA South East offer opportunities for one-to-one mentoring with practising architects, helping you to develop skills that will be valued by future employers. • There is no house style at Brighton: we provide a stimulating and challenging environment which enables you to develop your own practice.

TAILOR YOUR DEGREE

On our architecture courses you can tailor your degree through our studio group structure and module choices. In product design you can choose to specialise and have this reflected in the degree title you leave with.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Our students have gone on to renowned companies and practices, including: Andrés Jaque Architects • Apple • Tom Pye Set Design • Scott Brownrigg • Dyson • Mars • Nokia • Norman Foster • Sauerbruch Hutton.

SUBJECT AREAS • Architecture Architecture • interior architecture Design Product design In recent years graduate achievements include: • Serjeant Award for Excellence in Drawing • first prize in the 2016 Barclays Bank Local Genius competition • winning two of the nine awards at Free Range Show 2016 • Emily Brooke’s Blaze light being fitted to 11,500 Santander bikes by TfL (Transport for London). REALISING YOUR POTENTIAL

Joshua Akhtar, Product Design with Professional Experience BSc(Hons) graduate, won the W’innovate & Wilko award at the New Designers 2016 event with his design for a foldable beehive dedicated to swarm capture. “The Bait Hive uses a pheromone to attract a swarm” says Joshua. “The long-term plan is called the bait hive mission which aims to boost the numbers of bees globally.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Leah Capaldi is an artist who lectures on the Fine Art Sculpture programme. The crossover area between the disciplines of sculpture and performance are of particular interest to her practice. She explores the pivotal relationship between object or subject, encouraging the audience to question themselves in relation to the work and playing with notions of surveillance and spectatorship. Her work has been shown at galleries including the Serpentine, Matt’s Gallery and the ICA.

Studying and living in Brighton has been one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling experiences of my life. There are many reasons that I chose the University of Brighton – but primarily it was because I was very interested in the modules included in the curriculum and I preferred Brighton to other places in the UK. I have made friends with students from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, which has given me insight into how a multicultural teaching context functioned. MAKING A DIFFERENCE My time at the University of Brighton has given me many new skills and qualities, including a broad insight into all aspects of environmental issues. This year, I had the opportunity to volunteer for an environmental organisation, where I applied my knowledge of soil contamination and environmental policy. The variety of different subjects that are offered within the course enabled me to develop new skills that I never imagined. Support from the staff and my personal tutor helped me make the right decisions about my choice of modules and my final dissertation. I have gained self confidence and made many new and good friends that I will keep for life, and I am now planning to continue studying towards my MSc degree at the University of Brighton. HUMANITIES At Brighton we take a distinctive, interdisciplinary approach to humanities. Our programmes in history of art and design and humanities offer courses that enable you to critically examine the world we have made for ourselves through the study of design and visual culture, literature, history, philosophy and politics.

PUTTING LEARNING INTO PRACTICE

Our courses are characterised by small seminar groups – an approach which allows every student to be heard. You will receive a high level of support from your personal tutor, who you will meet with regularly to discuss your progress. Group and individual project work enable you to build on your ideas. The independent research project completed in year 3 enables you to apply the study skills and subject knowledge you have developed throughout your course to a subject of your choosing. History of Art and Design includes a placement option, providing experience and insight into museum, gallery and archival work.

REALISING YOUR POTENTIAL

You will be encouraged to express your opinions, and to develop your historical, analytical and interpretive skills. Courses within the humanities programme consider subjects including global conflict and culture; sexuality, gender and class; and racism, conflict and religion; and the relationship between these issues and our philosophical and critical grasp of the human condition. History of Art and Design students consider topics including modernism and postmodernism, and culture and commerce, exploring the history of art and design around the world. 64 64

Student societies and blogs provide opportunities to develop your ideas and debate with your peers. Frequent visiting speakers from other universities and organisations challenge your thinking and enrich your learning. The University of Brighton holds one of the UK’s leading library collections in the field of history of art and design and a rapidly growing collection of online books and articles for humanities study. Based at our site in central Brighton, students benefit from access to the internationally significant Design Archives, which includes the Design Council Archive, Screen Archives South East and The Dress and Textile Teaching collection. Other resources within the city include world-class archive The Keep, the Royal Pavilion & Museums Local History Collections and the Mass Observation Archive which contains material about everyday life in Britain since 1937.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Brighton researchers are pioneering new approaches to regenerative medicine, asthma and diabetes care, and leading the development of novel biomedical products. Professor Hal Sosabowski, who is based in our School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, helps inspire a new generation of scientists as science consultant for the UK’s BBC CBBC children’s series Operation Ouch! Nominated for a BAFTA in 2016, Operation Ouch! aims to make medicine and science fun and accessible for children.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

PhD student Alice Hagan conducted research to revolutionise liver cancer treatment. Unlike traditional chemotherapy, Alice’s method of treatment for liver tumours involved injecting microscopic beads into blood vessels feeding the tumour, blocking its source of nutrients and delivering sustained chemotherapy treatment to the tumour without affecting the rest of the liver tissue. When drugs are delivered this way, the amount of drug that reaches the rest of the body is greatly reduced, meaning fewer side effects for the patient.

Access to specialist equipment such as the inverted fluorescence microscope helps build practical skills.

We offer local and international fieldwork opportunities on our Ecology BSc(Hons) course.

Students use NMR – nuclear magnetic resonance in organic, inorganic, analytical and bio-chemistry. 77 77

HALLS OF RESIDENCE

How to apply to both halls and unihomes

Halls of residence are universitymanaged buildings where students live together. If you choose to live in halls you’ll have your own bedroom and share living spaces. We have halls of residence on several sites across Brighton and in Eastbourne. Prices and the type of provision vary across our locations.

Budgeting You may need to budget for travel, a TV licence and food as well as rent.

UNIHOMES

Unihomes are properties that the university lets to our students on behalf of private landlords. We ensure the standard of accommodation meets our requirements and you directly deal with us, whilst still having the freedom of living in a shared house or flat.

In Brighton, Unihome rents include electricity, water and gas.

After making us your firm choice, we'll email you an invitation to apply for halls of residence accommodation. Check our website to find out more about applying for accommodation, application deadlines and our allocation policy: www.brighton.ac.uk/living-here.

PRIVATE SECTOR RENTING

Many students choose this option; you'll have more freedom and independence and you can choose to be closer to the city. In Brighton, we work closely with landlords and letting agents to reserve flats and houses exclusively for our students.

Budgeting You’ll need to think about bills, contents insurance, travel, food and a TV licence as well as rent.

96

When to look It’s advisable to look for private rented accommodation during the summer before you start your course. If this is not possible, you may be able to book onto Orientation which takes place the week before the start of term, so that you can use this as a base for your search. If you would like to live in private rented accommodation you’ll need a UKbased guarantor, or be able to pay 3–12 month's rent in advance. For more information contact the accommodation service.

House-hunting groups and events In the summer, we run a house-hunting service designed to help you find a home and housemates before you start university. Look out for more details on our website. You'll be invited to join our Facebook house-hunting groups so you can meet other students who are looking to share and ask our accommodation team any questions that you might have.

HOMESTAY

Homestay gives you the extra security of living with a family, couple or single person endorsed by the university. Homestay is popular with international students and ideal for short stays of a few weeks or longer. Homestay is only available to students in the Brighton area. Rooms can be provided on a self-catered or catered basis, where you can have your meals cooked for you. We also have shared rooms if you know another student you would like to share with.

Budgeting Depending on whether you choose the catered or self-catered option, you may need to budget for food and travel as well as rent.

How to apply If you are interested in Homestay, once you have accepted your place on a course, let the accommodation team know by email or phone, and they will send you an application form.

PRIVATE SECTOR RENTING

Brighton is full of choice for students wanting to rent privately. You’ll find all types of accommodation over the city to suit you and your requirements.

Estimated costs I decided that I would like to rent in the city centre while I did my degree. I contacted the accommodation team for some advice and got some good tips for renting as a student. The bus route to Falmer is great, so I’ve always found it easy getting to and from lectures, and as my course has placements I wanted to make sure I could get around easily. Renting as a student can seem daunting, but there’s loads of help on hand from the university and I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Olly Hunt-Blow, Nursing (Adult) BSc(Hons)

• The average rent is £160 per week (one-bedroom flat) or £120–£125 per person per week (shared house). • A deposit of 10 week's rent is typically required. • Rent does not usually include bills, so you would be responsible for arranging to pay your own broadband, electricity, gas and water. If you choose private rented accommodation you’ll need a UK-based guarantor, or be able to pay 3–12 month rent in advance. For more information contact the accommodation service.

HOMESTAY

Almost all Eastbourne students who apply for a place, live in halls in their first year, while private rented accommodation is readily available to those who prefer the independence this offers.

APPLYING TO A UK UNIVERSITY There’s lots to think about when applying to university. In this section you can check what you need to do and when. You’ll find information about entry requirements and qualifications, how to make your application, fees and costs as well as useful contacts.

106

107

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Your academic grades are important, but other things count too. We look at lots of factors to make sure that everyone is given an equal opportunity to show their achievements. Some students are also asked to take part in an interview. We consider all applications very carefully including personal statements, references and work experience, as well as exam results and predicted grades. Your academic qualifications For information about the academic qualifications and English language levels that you need to apply for each course visit our online course finder. www.brighton.ac.uk/courses

International qualification equivalencies If you don’t have a UK qualification our international equivalency guides will help you to compare the grades of your home country qualifications to the UK grades listed as the entry requirements for your course. www.brighton.ac.uk/international/ country

What if I don’t meet the entry requirements for my course? If you don’t have the required academic qualifications or your grades are not high enough, you can take a university preparation programme at our oncampus International College (see page 90). When you successfully complete the programme you will be guaranteed a place on one of our courses. www.brighton.ac.uk/ubic

108

English language entry requirements Our degree courses are delivered and assessed in English. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and the university need you to meet their English language requirements for your chosen course. Please check individual course information to find out the English language entry requirements that apply to you. UKVI requires prospective students who have not studied and been examined in English to provide evidence they have met the language requirement through a secure English language test (SELT), with an approved test provider. This evidence is required before we can issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. SELT results are only valid for two years from the time the test is taken. You can’t apply for a Tier 4 visa using test results older than two years.

If you have a different English language qualification contact us to find out if you’re eligible for one of our courses. For a list of UK Home Office SELTs visit www.gov.uk/government/publications/ guidance-on-applying-for-uk-visaapproved-english-language-tests. Please refer to the UK Home Office website for further details about their requirements. www.gov.uk/visas-immigration

What if I do not meet the English language requirements? The University of Brighton Language Institute (see page 88) offers English language pre-sessional and pre-masters courses to help you meet our English language entry requirements and to prepare you for academic study at any UK university. www.brighton.ac.uk/learnenglish

If you want to study at degree level or above we can accept a number of other English language tests, as well as SELTs. For further information go to www.gov. uk/tier-4-general-visa/knowledge-ofenglish.

www.brighton.ac.uk/early-settlementdiscount

Should I be paying international fees? If you’re not sure if you should pay fees at the international rate, we will contact you during the application process to complete a fee assessment form. All cases are judged in accordance with the UK government’s guidelines and are treated fairly and equally.

Where these costs are incurred as a mandatory requirement of the course, they are covered by the tuition fee. Other additional costs may not be included in your tuition fee. Please check with the school that provides your course about possible additional costs before you apply so that you can budget accordingly.

They can provide you with information about our courses and help you with the application process. To find an agent in your country visit www.brighton.ac.uk/international/ country.

International office Our university representatives also attend British Council education exhibitions and other recruitment fairs in many countries on a regular basis. For details of all of our representatives and to find out about how you can meet us when we are in your country visit www.brighton.ac.uk/international/ country.

My name is Angeline and I work in the International Office. I’m based here in Brighton so I am your main contact point if you are living in the UK or just here for a visit. I attend education exhibitions and visit schools, colleges and agent offices for international students in the UK so look out for my visits on our website or ask one of the student advisors at your institution.

Alumni We can put you in touch with a graduate from your country. If you’d like to hear first hand what it’s like to study at the University of Brighton, from someone from your own country who has experienced moving to the UK to study, we can help. Visit www. brighton.ac.uk/internationalaskalumni.

As well as information about courses, scholarships and application procedures I can let you know about our open days or arrange tours of our campuses. I also work with the University of Brighton International College, which offers academic preparation for university entry. In order to make your progression as easy as possible I arrange dedicated open days, meetings with academic staff and pre-progression briefings. I look forward to hearing from you.
