CONGRATULATIONS

Huge congratulations for completing the Healthy Minds programme with us!

We hope this programme proved successful in supporting you and your wellbeing, and hopefully even helping you find a new hobby in physical activity.

What's Next

Now that your journey within the programme has been completed, I am sure you are wondering what happens next.

This leaflet is designed to act as a reference for you on how you can continue being active, finding enjoyment in exercise, and continue to build and develop the skills and tools required to improve and maintain your wellbeing, from now and into the future.

Options

Outside of the programme, there are many options for how you can continue to be active, whether it be with us and the University of Bristol, or elsewhere.

It's important you do what you enjoy, so do not feel any pressure to force yourself to do something that does not sound appealing.

Exercise and physical activity is a unique concept: it does not matter what you do, as long as you do something.

Anything and everything helps! You just have to find what suits you best.

The next pages will discuss some options that may be of interest to you.

Becoming a member

Did you know, we have found that approximately 30% of participants when they finish Healthy Minds, wish to continue exercising within our facility.

You can choose between just wanting the gym for off-peak or peak, maybe just classes, or maybe you want all access to all the services we offer including the swimming pool.

As an added bonus, as you’ve already been a part of facilities through Healthy Minds, we will waive the joining fee, saving you money!

Contact the Healthy Minds mailbox to set up your membership.

Financial Concerns

We are aware that many options do require some form of monetary value for you to access. If this is cause for concern, there are options available through the Student Funding Office.

bristol.ac.uk/students/support/finances

Here they may be able to help you find the resources you need to reduce stress concerning finances. There are many bursaries and scholarships that you may be eligible for, so keep an eye out.

Always ask questions if you are not sure.

student clubs and societies

What about if you are more interested in sports or a more social approach to physical activity?

Then clubs and societies may be the better option for you.

The University of Bristol and Students' Union have many to choose from, all with their own support systems and individual benefits. This may range from tennis to canoeing, and everything in-between.

Take a look on the Bristol SU website and see what may suit you:

How to stay active

Exercise can be done almost anywhere and in any way.

If you feel more comfortable exercising outside or at home, then having an idea of the physical activity guidelines will be the best way to continue long-term progress.

Exercise does not have to be done in a gym. Anything from walking, playing a sport, even vacuuming your house, all count as physical activity.

To keep you happy and healthy, you may wish to mix and match across multiple options in a given week.

Use the guidelines to assist your activity levels throughout the week.

Physical Activity

Guidelines:

At least 150mins of moderate-intensity activity, or 75mins of vigorous-intensity activity, a week, or a mixture of both

Basically, participating in physical activity over 3-5 days per week

Strengthening activities at least twice a week

Such as lifting weights

Reduce periods of sedentary behaviour

Standing up, taking a brief walk, and/or stretching

Grace's Story

Grace, one of our participants in the programme, ran the London Marathon in 2019 and raised funds for Healthy Minds.

"I really enjoyed every aspect of the programme, but especially challenging myself to try new things and becoming more focused on my daily life as a result.

I’ve really felt the benefits of lifestyle changes made through the programme which I am determined to maintain after, by setting new goals of my own.

What I found most beneficial was having 1-1 guidance on how to use equipment safely so I can feel confident in the gym when working independently..."

"

...I have also found the benefit of pushing myself more and developing better strength both physically and mentally.

Last month I featured on BBC News to talk about mental health and ran the London Marathon to help raise funds for University of Bristol mental health provisions through Sport, Exercise and Health.

Last month I also helped other students across the line at the Great Bristol 10k, after training to become an England Athletics run leader."

- Grace, Healthy Minds Participant
